Pat Summitt has been called a living legend. As head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols, Summitt has taken her NCAA Division 1 women's basketball team to back-to-back national championships in 1996 and 1997, and five titles in a 10-year span. In Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to read once.
Reach for the Summit was an easy read.My goal was to read the book for its explanation of the 12 disciplines which are used for all activities in life, not just for basketball. There were more examples of the disciplins than philosophy. I am sure if one is passonate about basketball they will get more out of it than I did.Disciplines were common sense.Nothing new, but the examples were interesting enough. I thought enough of it togive it to my 14 year son to read.I believe he will get more out of it than I did, simply because of his love of sports. He will benefit from seeing the coach's side of view. Good enough to read through once.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK, but not for everyone
YES, I GAVE IT ONLY 2 STARS! I have read alot of motivational books in my life time but this one leaves you empty. Patt Summitt does not give a "one-size fits all" approach to obtaining Life's goals as she suggest.Pat Summitt gives these long drawn out stories of her coaching experience and players experience then, at the very end, ties it to a generic principle of leadership that has been rehash by hundred of other motivational book writers.I'm not hating on her leadership or abilities. She has proven herself a dynamic coach. If you're a HS/college couch of any sport then this is the book for you! but for the rest of us her approaches to leadership do not necessarily translates to pearls of wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reach for the Summit
The book Reach for the Summit, by Pat Summit, is one of my all time favorite books. Pat shares some of her most intimate and personal struggles and she shows how she got to the top. Pat Summit is the most winningest coah is the history of the WNCAA, she even has a basketball statium named after her, The Summit.

On those magnificent days on which your drives split the fairway down the middle and your wedge shots leave you putting for birdie, you think: "I wonder if I could do this for a living." After all, guys in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, guys no one heard of until recently, are making planeloads of money on the various golf tours (and buying private planes to take them from one big-money tournament to the next). 3-0 out of 5 stars The pre-Tiger tour
John Feinstein's "A Good Walk Spoiled" follows a handful of professional golfers through the ups and downs of the 1993 and 1994 PGA tour seasons. The book offers plenty of colorful commentary on the lives that these players live both inside and outside the ropes. The story begins with a dramatic retelling of the 1993 Ryder Cup at the Belfry. The chapters that follow focus on individual players and events, including both highlights and lowlights of the 1993-1994 seasons.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the classics...
This is a must read for any serious fan of golf, but the casual fan will enjoy it too.Feinstein takes the reader into the minds and emotions of professional golfers of all levels during a season on the PGA Tour.Particularly compelling is his description of the struggling pros trying to make it through Q School.Any person who's ever worked hard for a goal or a dream only to come up short will identify with these players.Feinstein weaves those narratives brilliantly with the players on the top of the golf world and shows how they too struggle with the game despite being the best in the world.

2-0 out of 5 stars Golfing Gossip at a Grinding Pace
I guess I am the only reviewer who found this book tedious and banal. It's more a series of thumbnail biographies of pga tour players, linked together through weekly accounts of pga tour stops, than anything else.Feinstein's writing seems to move along at a brisk enough pace, but after several chapters, I found one event starting to blend into the next, one Q school qualifier after another, one harrowing tournament finish after another, and so on, and so on.Feinstein's writing verges on being formulaic- it's all written in a sort of breathless, anxiety filled pace, as the nail biting details of who's missing the cut, who's choking under pressure, whose marriage is on the rocks, who's in danger of returning to Q school all gets mixed together in a swill of golf gossip and insider minutia.

In 1977, Rudy Tomjanovich and Kermit Washington became entwined in a single punch that would change not only their lives, but how professional basketball is played today. Because the punch dislodged Tomjanovich's skull and nearly destroyed both men's careers, the scuffle never settled as a dusty bit of NBA trivia. Instead, it nearly superseded both men's notable achievements. The history of that punch (it could not, by any standards, be considered a fight) and the fate of the two men are the subjects of John Feinstein's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Feinstein delivers
The punch. This was a horrible sports moment which affected so many lives.I still get shivers when I think of that event. As a teenager, it changed some of my views on sports, life and the two individuals involved.Feinstein had the incredible challenge of revisiting this event with the Rudy and Kermit and with the reader.
3-0 out of 5 stars " The Punch"
"The Punch" was an important event in the history of basketball. The author, John Feinstein did an okay job writing this book, but he kind of lost my interest after he started to repeat statements."The Punch" is worth reading, because it told the event that changed the sport forever. If you are interested in basketball I recommend reading this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quota to fill?
This book is a complete ripoff. Feinstein must have a quota to reach because this book is just unbelievably poorily and laziliy written and edited. The repetition is so severe a 5th grade teacher would have given the writer an "F". Hopefully, this is an aberration for Feinstein but after reading this book I came away believing he's sold out = write a book, collect a check. Well, he won't be getting any of my $s anymore. ... John Wooden was named ESPN's Coach of the Century for the way he led his UCLA basketball team to the top of the sporting world in the 1960s and '70s. Andrew Hill was a rebellious and sparingly used reserve on the squad before becoming a successful television executive. While it's doubtful that either would have predicted it at the time, the lessons imparted on the court by Wooden eventually helped Hill reach the top of his profession. And in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great little book!
I really enjoyed this book by Andy Hill. Not until he realized his own successes and failures did he fully see all that he learned from coach Wooden. The foundational principles taught by coach Wooden are one's that we can all admire."Make each day your masterpiece."Buy this book, then give it to a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice for anyone in a leadership position
The book begins with a brief summary of Hill's introduction to Wooden and Hill realization that the only reason he's made it this far is because Wooden's teachings so ingrained in his mind from his time at UCLA and that they are applicable to all aspects of life.He relates Wooden's 21 "secrets" to his business life, and demonstrates how they guided him to the top. It's amazing how perfectly these teachings fit into regular life.John Wooden is truly an enlightened soul.5-0 out of 5 stars The teachings of basketball related to the lessons in life!
Be Quick - But Don't Hurry! by Andrew Hill may be one of the most influential books I have ever read. The author teaches the reader about how to be successful in any aspect of life through the teachings of what John Wooden had taught him at UCLA.John Wooden is arguably the best coach of all time, for any sport or level of play, so it makes sense that the key to his achievement as a coach was based on a plan that truly worked. He called his "plan" the Pyramid of Success, and he enforced it upon every athlete that played for him.Andrew Hill was a great High School basketball player but did not shine in basketball as much at UCLA during the late 1960's and early 1970's, but the lessons he got out of John Wooden lead him to be a business success in the television broadcasting industry for CBS.If you are a fan of basketball, this book will interest you, because it relates basketball to succession in business, and makes the keys to business succession easy to understand. All in all, this book will teach you at least one lesson, and will probably leave you with ideas of changing your life style to achieve exactly what you want in life. This is a definite must read book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spirit First; Success Follows: Winning the most and best through playing for the team and not strictly for the win!
"Leading with the Heart: Coach K`s Successful Strategies for Baseketball, Business, and Life by Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K) and Donald T. Phillips provides provocative, real-life anecdotes that capture the meaning of the spirit of winning for the team.Coach K shows that through the spirit of playing FOR the team - and not strictly for the win -- and with the spirit of those who can be considered "the HEARTS of the TEAM," possibilities become boundless. It's not the win that defines success. It's the spirit first, through which the success follows.Sometimes the team stumbles and sometimes the team loses.Every team and every human being goes through these trials and tribulations. What defines the spirit of success, as taught to me by Kirby Thibeault, author of a book of inspirational poetry titled Wealth, and reflected in the teachings of Coach K, is the ability to overcome psychological obstacles, to see and strive for the most positive possibilities, to never give up, to look outside the "box," to look within, and to discover the true meaning of winning.Kirby Thibeault, author of Wealth, expresses a similar perspective in his forward titled "Wealth" when he writes "It's realization is like that of the discovery of the divine. All that was unknown and limiting becomes clear and liberating. What was once feared becomes friendly.... It's an awakening of the spirit."Coach K delivers tips that help define the winning attitude in teams, in leadership roles, in success, in defeat, in life, and in considerations of humanity and love."Susanne Cardwell, owner/operator of Advert Marketing Solutions and avid supporter of the spiritual views of Kirby Thibeault, author of book Wealth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great story
This book is written by one of the best guys ever in college basketball "Mike Krzyzewski" he has been the face of Duke basketball for many years.Throughout this book he talks about his life and how he became who he is.He talks about how he builds mentally strong kids and how he has trust in everything they do.If you play sports or coach a sport this book would be great for you.I play soccer personally and this book relates to what I am told every day by my coaches. You need to play as a team and if you do you will win.
5-0 out of 5 stars a great book to read through the summer
Leading With The Heart is one of the best books I have ever read.Mike Krzyzewski does a wonderful job talking about the important things in life.Such things include leadership and the importance of family.Krzyzewski set up the book in a fun way that makes it easy to read.He starts with the preseason, goes to the regular season, then postseason, and finally all-season.His use of basketball terms is like a metaphor for life.He also gives an outline before the chapter so you know what you will learn, and then gives a short summary at the end of each chapter to show you what you did learn. The book mostly talks about leading a team, whether it is in basketball or in the real world. The awesome thing about it though, is that he puts so much more into it than just how to lead.He dedicates his heart into this book, and every other emotion to truly make it a masterpiece. This book is defiantly worth reading. My reactions to this novel are tremendous.Krzyzewski has really taught me something, and I have never met him in my life. You will truly get something out of this book, even if you read just a paragraph from it.It really gives you determination to lead in what ever you do.Krzyzewski is one of the highest, most respected coaches in the history of the sports world, and you certainly will know it by reading this book.Krzyzewski really puts things into perspective, and he makes it so easy to understand. If you are interested in being a leader, or just want to get a lesson on life, or a life lesson, then you should really pick up this book and read it.I guarantee it will impact you in some way. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff - worked for me
I have been playing golf for a long time, but have had a psychological barrier about playing "too well".I knew that the mental / confidence part was as important as the physical/practice part of golf, but I really didn't have an approach to improve my mental game. Until I read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars It really helps!
I just want to say that this book was very helpful in increasing my confidence in my all around game.We all have rounds where we hit the ball extremely well the front nine and blow up on the back or vice-versa.Though it doesn't really give instructions or tips, it's what you take from it that is so beneficial.I played a few days after reading just the first few chapters and what I took from it was to "stay in the present".Every time I found myself getting ahead with my score or dwelling on a poor execution, I would say to myself, "Just stay in the present" and I played one of my best rounds ever.I would very much recommend this book to anyone who has ever "blown-up" during a round.

great story about long friendships originating from their days as ballplayers. The persoanlities of Doerr, Dimaggio, Pesky, and Williams really shine through in this short read. I never knew much about Dom Dimaggio before this book, after reading it he sounds like a Hall of Famer. Too bad he's not in. Williams comes off as alternatively abrasive and childlike, yet still somehow loveable. This is definitely a good story about long friendships.

This is a touching, fun, and relaxed telling of the story of 4 Red Sox players from the glory days, who all these decades later, are still looking after each other.Ted, Johnny, Dom, and Bobby never won a World Series, but their nearly lifelong friendship speaks about much more than just baseball. 1-0 out of 5 stars Boring...
A great portion of the book is very boring. I really felt like rushing through the book. I don't recommend this book to others

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love baseball...
and even if you know nothing about baseball like me, Kearns Goodwin has hit a home run with "Wait till Next Year."You will learn all about the rivalry between the Mets and the Yankees and the history of Goodwin's beloved Brooklyn Dodgers. She tells all about her heroes Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges and Roy Campanella. All of these great baseball nuggets are woven into her story of growing up in Brooklyn in the '50s, and is so evocative of a time and place that was quintessentially American. This book will make you long for a town like Rockville Centre, sometime between 1949 and 1957.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Nostalgia
I, too, grew up on Long Island in the 50s and early 60s (two years in Queens and ten years out on "duh oyland".)I'm a few years younger; the Dodgers were already in Hollywood and I rooted for the hated Jankees. But the images of this beautiful memoir were so resonant with my childhood, from soothing sound of Red Barber's voice coming from the tinny transistor radio to the edicts from the diocese of Rockville Centre, read periodically in lieu of a Sunday sermon, mostly asking for more money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Memoir
Conroy's fiction has always been a biography of sorts (Great Santini in particular) but I think his choice to chronicle his life through his final basketball season at the Citadel was brilliant. It brings together all the elements of his fictional life that we have come to love and respect:His overbearing father, the south in the 1950s and 1960s, and the one character common to all his books: Sports.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, overrated
As a memoir of a relatively prolific and popular author, this book is a very disappointing.Ardent fans of Pat Conroy obviously love this book, but then again, they love everything with his name on it irrespective of content (a cook book?)Conroy revisits his early experiences that provided the repetivive themes in his fiction as psuedo-non-fiction.(The dialogue in the book reads more like fiction, and it is simply not credible that he could recount exact conversations from childhood to college.)He gives the reader minimal insight into his experience as a writer.Rather, the book reads like an exercise in self-therapy that does explore his well known issues rather deeply (although losing is not one of them.)Conroy may have provided all that he can in terms of describing his process and how he approaches his craft. If that is the case, then this book should serve as inspiration for aspiring writers.Publishing fiction is not necessarily about literary excellence. It's a business.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another 3 Pointer For Pat
Pat Conroy is a national tresure. His writing is sublime, he is one of the few writers who can capably place the reader into almost any situation and paint such a realistic portrait that the reader feels he is actually there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A small masterpiece about the game of life
If you're looking for help with your six-iron shot, look elsewhere. This book is about virutosity, mastery, and the challenge of rising above yourself.

1-0 out of 5 stars I don't get it!
It's TM for golfers with a Scotish accent. Can't believe this book has a following.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you just started playing
Whether you are a beginner just starting or a seasoned professional, there a gems here. Play the ball where it lies. Never cheat, you will only be cheating yourself. There is no such thing as a gimme. It will remind you why you play the game and you will enjoy golf all the more even if you shoot 20 above you handicap on anyparticular round. And despiet other reviews, it does help you with your game. It is mostly a mental game. Gary Player said golf is a game of 5 inches, the distance between your ears sothis is a mental (not mechanical) book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best.
When I first started reading this book I had a tough time putting it down. It takes us back to Tigers early golf days right up to the winning of his first Masters Tournament in record numbers. Tim Rosaforte really makes this book come alive. You will not be disappointed in this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars A CHAMPION RISES
At age twenty-one, Eldrick "Tiger" Woods became the youngest individual to win the Masters Tournament. This young phenomena ushered in a new age for golf and sports fans all over wanted to know, who is this rising champion? Sports writer Tim Rosaforte provides that answer by penning one of the first biographies of Tiger.4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Well Written Book
Although the story dragged in the beginning, I found the book Tiger Woods The Makings Of A Champion very interesting and entertaining. It was also a very well written book.It struck me with awe when I read that Tiger started swinging a golf club at 10 months. The book also shows people how hard Tiger's childhood was. That he couldn't even play at some golf courses because he was black. It showed how great a golfer Tiger Woods is, and how he could possibly be the player of the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Her brother Sen. George Allen is a Vicious Bully
Haven't read this yet, but am getting it.This book isn't just about George Allen the football coach, but also about her brother George Allen the Republican senator. She details numerous examples of severe abuse by George Jr. against his siblings.Sen. Allen is being talked up as a Presidential hopeful, so I am reading this book to find out what a sick psychotic freak he really is (in addition to a notorious racist)
3-0 out of 5 stars Appalling, but very Republican
"George Allen emerges as a self-centered man who chose to sacrifice a normal family life for the sake of his career"
5-0 out of 5 stars The Personal Football Book
As an avid football fan, George Allen is one of the greatest NFL Coaches of all time.Throughout the book, Jennifer Allen describes they storybook life of an NFL coach from a footbal and personal perspective. George's rough-and-tough attitude made two winningless teams, the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Redskins, into champions. However, his personality as a coach effected his role as a father, which created tension between him and his children. As the his only daughter, Jennifer tries to win her father's affection as she struggles of being a product of an NFL coach and well-known celebrity. ...
