4-0 out of 5 stars Coach K throws a 3-pointer with this book!
Coach K knows more than what it takes to win on the court. He also knows the power of publicity and the critical role it plays in the success of all players -- regardless of the game. Leadership, accountability, responsibility, and academics are all factors in success -- regardless of what game we play in life. Individuals in various businesses may define success differently. But one fact remains the same:If we want people to value our skills, we must first show that we value ourselves. If we want people to buy from us, trust us and invest in our companies, or even to vote for us, they have to know who we are, what we have accomplished, and why they should believe in us! Thanks Coach K for reminding folks that success means more than scoring a basket -- it is a life strategy. (Marion E. Gold is author of "Personal Publicity Planner: A Guide to Marketing YOU," and "Top Cops: Profiles of Women in Command.")

3-0 out of 5 stars A Marketing Challenge
Unfortunately, marketing this book to the general public will prove to be a challenge since, due to FCC regulations, most of "Coach K's Keywords for Success" can't be used on television or radio. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing inspiration
John Wooden is a motivational icon for a reason. While basketball coach at UCLA, he won ten national championships in twelve years. What's more, he did it the "old-fashioned way," by focusing on establishing his team's character.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
I didn't know much about John Wooden and his 10 basketball championships. After reading this book, I realized why he won those championships.Wooden reflects on his experience as a coach and also what he learned from his dad.The thoughts presented in this book are timeless.I have read this book more than 10 times and still look forward to read it.Just reading Wooden's philosophy makes me feel better. It changed my outlook towards life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended Reading
John Wooden shares his great vision and framework for leadership and inspiration. The author proposes and provides the reader with a fantastic guide behind the skills and fundamentals of leadership. The author has been a very successful leader for over half a century. In describing his leadership beliefs and methods, he gives the reader a deeper understanding of values and their importance. From personal experiences, he establishes an easy to read book that I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leadership Personified
To me, the words "Wooden" and "leadership" are synonymous. On and off various basketball courts, first as a player and then as a coach, John Wooden demonstrated talents, skills, and qualities of character seldom found in a single person. He led others by example but also by the force of his convictions. After reading this book, some may conclude that he was "idealistic,' "naive," "corny," "old-fashioned," etc. Not so. In fact, he was a strict disciplinarian with non-negotiablevalues who had zero-toleranceof attitude and behavior he perceived to be selfish, rude, unsportsmanlike, or indolent. He invariably accepted his team's defeat with grace but was saddened - sometimes so angered he exclaimed "Goodness gracious sakes!" -- by anything less than a best-effort, not only by his assistant coachesand players but also (especially) by himself. It should be added that, according to those who know him best (including coaches of opponents' teams), he has always been an exceptionally thoughtful, caring, and decent person.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly an Icon, but Not a Cure-All!
John Wooden begins with brief remembrances of his life as a young farm boy (lots of hard work, and a great deal of competitiveness with his older brother), and absorbing key lessons from his father - "Focus on being the best you can become, and don't worry about whether your are better than some else. You have control over the one, the other you don't."This lesson would become part of Wooden's coaching foundation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A PRACTICAL AND QUICK STUDY GUIDE
I played a lot of basketball before taking on coaching my 6 year olds' team, but I had never coached.I digested the basics of this book in about an hour and it was a roadmap to get me started.I keep reading and using it as the season progresses.Very very good for first-time coaches for kids leagues of about 5-13 years old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only One Book Needed
I struggled looking for a book written for the experienced youth coach who doesn't know much about basketball.I coach four youth sports, but I never played organized basketball.I was at a loss for drills, plays and defensive philosophies. This book gave me a huge head start and Coach Faucher's style is easy and right for the kids.I enjoy planning and running my basketball practices far more than any other sport now. Thanks Coach Faucher.Do you have one for football, . . baseball, . . soccer??????

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Rocket Science
I read this book because I thought that it would help me coach a group of 5th graders in the fundamentals of basketball.I did not learn anything new after reading this book, but I also have played basketball for many years. What was valuable to me was the drills made available. If you know nothing of basketball you'll appreciate this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Short, but Very Good
I loved the book, but I would have liked for it to be longer. It is a very quick read but is full of wisdom from one of the best coaches of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Old School Wisdom
This isn't a book about basketball, but about the foundations of success; not just for a team of ball-players, but for a family, an organization, and even a nation. There is a great deal of wisdom contained in these few pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wizard at His Finest!
I do not think you will find a better sports biography in recent years than this one.John Wooden's story should be informative and inspirational for anyone, not just sports fans. This book chronicles both the professional and personal history of college basketball's all-time greatest coach and captures both brilliantly.Fantastic pictures, outstanding print and photo editing and an all-around edifying read that could easily be read within a day. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!
The book has a tremendous amount of positive basketball knowledge. Many coaches get away from fundamentals and this book goes into detail on the benefits of breaking everything down to the bear essentials.A great compliment to this book is the video "48 Championship Basketball Drills" which has some outstanding creative shooting drills.Sid Goldstein should be hailed as "El Sid" on a good effort and worthy teaching tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of its' kind
As a coach of a 5th and 6th grade boys basketball team I found this book a tremendous teaching tool this season. Most of the children I coach have had little or no formal teaching in basketball previous to me. This books true value comes from being geared towards all skill levels. A coach at my level, straight through coaches of High school varsity teams, can find drills to introduce to their players. 2-0 out of 5 stars OK on fundamentals; no-go on drills
I'm always looking for books that will help me with the teaching aspect of coaching (which also happens to be the most important). The author has the right idea of focusing on breaking things down to the fundamentals, butdoes only a so-so job of explaining them. The coverage is inconsistent;sometimes explanations are very clear, other times you're left to fill inblanks. The same is true of information provided on why certainfundamentals are important and why the methodology offered is the correctapproach.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much detail about the design of his shoe.
BUT, if you take anything out of this book, it's the fact that Jordan works harder than his peers, whether it was basketball or business. His inner drive and desire to succeed and give it his all is what I took away from the book.I would skim the parts on shoe design and focus mainly on his words and advice, especially on work ethic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for youth basketball coaches
I have coached kids (boys and girls) in basketball of ages 4-12, this book provided the best information on what to do and what to expect.Particularly, the part of patience, repetition/reinforcement, and the fundalmentals. The recommended offensive plays (post interchange, wheel, shuffle, etc.) and defensive strategies (whether man-to-man or zone) are excellent.Additionally, the chapters on vision, motivational phrases, and running a practice are worth reading. The author recommends the use of parents during practice time, called "stations" to maximize proper skill development. This book is a must for those interested in coaching youth basketball.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book on B.Ball for youth, with tips for parents
This book does a good job of covering the basics, including the fundemental of shooting, dribbling, passing, pick and roll, give and go, fakes, etc. with good photos.Good section on defense fundamentals too. There are also sections on offense and defense (both man-to-man & zone)with diagrams. There are sections for coaches including running a practicecomplete with a check list.A good section for parents is added completewith motivational phrases.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide To Coaching youth Basketball
A woderful book. Short (156 pp.) and highly readable,McCarthy makes it all very simple.McCarthy covers the fundamentals (footwork, dribbling, rebounding, etc.) but intersperses his text with invaluable practicaladvice -- e.g., "I always say to drive as close to a defender aspossible. If he reacts and moves back into that lane, he will commit afoul."There is also a great emphasis on team play, and how toencourage kids to pass and play a team game. I have played and coachedbasketball for twenty five years. While this book covers enough basics fora novice, it also contains many valuable insights that I use in coaching a12 and under youth program today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The essence of a winner...
The most amazing thing about this book is it's simplicity. What's new in the book? nothing, but it's the pairing of Jordan, the icon, with simple core value that makes it a wonderful read.
3-0 out of 5 stars And the secret of success is...
...that there is no secret. Michael Jordan is probably the greatest basketball player of all time, so when such an accomplished man speaks on the achievement of excellence, it is worth the effort to pay attention. In a short 36-page read, Jordan gives advice that resonates far beyond sports, and applies just the same to academic, business and personal areas of life.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Basketball Player of All-Time Speaks.
I CAN'T ACCEPT NOT TRYING is a small inspiration book written by the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan. Jordan had an unbelievable career in the NBA before retiring, tried playing major league baseball, came back to the NBA to lead the Chicago Bulls to a few more championships, then retired again, then came out of retirement again to play for the Washington Wizards--a team he had owned for over a year, before retiring for a third time in 2003. This little book was published just prior to Jordan's first return to basketball after his first "retirement". It was one of many items to fuel the media hype about his return.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
This book has alot of very helpful info on the game and the breakdown of the rules. The diagrams on plays should be easier to understand though, because most people can not follow on how the plays or drawn out or worded. I wanted a little more information on fouls and how they work..... there is not much a definiton and explanation of a defensive foul. But alltogether it is a great book and reference for the game of basketball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book does a great job of breaking down basketball into some of the smallest elements that starting coaches might not remember. This would be a great resource for all elementary and middle school coaches. It is written by one of the best college coaches of all time. This book is filled with reliable tips about the game of basketball for coaches and players.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
Based on the limited rule coverage and lack of text and diagrams covering the differences between the various levels, I was tempted to give no more than three stars. However, the tips on how to improve your basketball play were worth five stars, so I averaged the two. It is not quite up to the caliber of other "for Dummies" books, but it is worth a read. ... Pat Summitt has been called a living legend. As head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols, Summitt has taken her NCAA Division 1 women's basketball team to back-to-back national championships in 1996 and 1997, and five titles in a 10-year span. In Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to read once.
Reach for the Summit was an easy read.My goal was to read the book for its explanation of the 12 disciplines which are used for all activities in life, not just for basketball. There were more examples of the disciplins than philosophy. I am sure if one is passonate about basketball they will get more out of it than I did.Disciplines were common sense.Nothing new, but the examples were interesting enough. I thought enough of it togive it to my 14 year son to read.I believe he will get more out of it than I did, simply because of his love of sports. He will benefit from seeing the coach's side of view. Good enough to read through once.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK, but not for everyone
YES, I GAVE IT ONLY 2 STARS! I have read alot of motivational books in my life time but this one leaves you empty. Patt Summitt does not give a "one-size fits all" approach to obtaining Life's goals as she suggest.Pat Summitt gives these long drawn out stories of her coaching experience and players experience then, at the very end, ties it to a generic principle of leadership that has been rehash by hundred of other motivational book writers.I'm not hating on her leadership or abilities. She has proven herself a dynamic coach. If you're a HS/college couch of any sport then this is the book for you! but for the rest of us her approaches to leadership do not necessarily translates to pearls of wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reach for the Summit
The book Reach for the Summit, by Pat Summit, is one of my all time favorite books. Pat shares some of her most intimate and personal struggles and she shows how she got to the top. Pat Summit is the most winningest coah is the history of the WNCAA, she even has a basketball statium named after her, The Summit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great inspiration for any coach
I am a first year basketball coach and found this book very inspirational. It makes me want to work even harder than I have and set higher standards for myself.Pat Riley is an excellent motivator and role model.I like any coach who is willing to write about his major losses in his career as well as greatest triumphs.A must read for any coach. However, he needs to write a sequel since he won his new title this summer.Go Heat!

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't make the playoffs.
Of the over fifty books on leadership/coaching that I've read, this is by far the least useful. There are anecdotes for basketball fans, but as far as useful ideas on success and leadership there are few.It is the most useless book I've read in the coaching/leadership field (even worse than Coach K's or Dean Smith's).

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible "book" that ever die-hard fans should avoid
First, let me say I am a huge AZ Bball fan, and it would not take much to make me happy - but this "book" is terrible and an attempt to just take as much money from fans with as little work as possible. I put the word "book" in quotes, because it really isn't a book - it is just a collection of very short paragraphs that are unrelated to each other. Each tiny paragraph is separated by lots of white space and a seperate "headline". Because of the book size and all the white space, I think the entire book would only be about 9 or 10 pages as a single-spaced Word file (of course, since the subject changes every three sentences, it would be just as unreadable in that form). It is separated into eras (sort of) but is not even entirely cronological. It appears that random paragraphs were taken out of newspaper articles and each one carefully shorn of any context, then vomited into a book. How bad? I wouldn't keep it my house (and I have old press guides and gobs of other Wildcat stuff), and I wouldn't even list it here as used (because I am not going to inflict this on a fellow fan) - I tossed it in the garbage. 3-0 out of 5 stars Wildcat Fans Must Read.
I only gave this book 3 stars because I was deeply disappointed with the writing style.Example:"Little did anyone know that CmCray had a secret. Before the game--at his home--he had drank alcohol before the game to ease his mind".Yes, we get it--it was BEFORE THE GAME.I was ready to give this book the highest rating just because it was about Arizona basketball. My beloved Wildcats.Steve Rivera seems to be a little too much in love with his own writing. The book is broken up into segments such as "Late 80's" or "Early 90's", and each section has short (one paragraph) stories from the, and about, the players and coaches who were instrumental during that era. There is a loose structure to the time line and these stories are often told and placed in random order. All in all though, I am delighted that someone thought the Cats are important enough to write a book about the history of the program.A better project would have been one of those "A Season With . . ."Picking a year and writing in diary fashion about everything that happened during a particular year. However, if you are a Wildcat fan this is an absolute must-read.If you are not, then I would probably recommend that you do not waste the money since their is very little here for the average basketball fan.It is a book that cheers the Wildcats, and rightfully so I suppose.I only wish that there was some real reporting, some "inside" stuff about Lute, Sean (both of them), Steve, Damon, Jason (all three of them), Chris, Khalid, Gilbert, Loren, and on and on.GO CATS!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside stuff from the dean of Wildcat basketball writers
In his first book, award-winning Tucson Citizen reporter Steve Rivera does a fine job of going behind the scenes of the nationally ranked Arizona Wildcats and their Hall of Fame coach, Lute Olson. Rivera covered Sean Elliott, Steve Kerr, Luke Walton, Damon Stoudamire, Mike Bibby, Richard Jefferson, Jason Terry and other Wildcats before they went on to the pros and offers new kernels of info for even the most die-hard Wildcat fan. It's an entertaining read that makes a great gift for that Arizona fan on your list, but it's also a good gift for any fan of college basketball. The publishers have released other books on top intercollegiate programs.Rivera's book on Arizona easily matches the quality of the rest of the series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ONe of the two best ever on coaching basketball
This book and Coaching Basketball by Jerry Krause are the two best coaches books out there. 5-star has drills that we use daily in our practices and coaching basketball as some great plays and ideas regarding the game. Getboth these books ASAP!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
This book is a classic. I can not believe that there are not more reviews giving this book the priase it deserves. If you want to become better at basketball you must not only practice consistantly, but you must know thecorrect techniques and moves to practice. This book is basically a completereference of drills for every position that have been used at the nationspremire basketball camp - five star. When Trajon Langdon started out as afreshman at duke this book recieved a lot of attention because Trajon, being from Alaska, did not have great exposure to a wide variety ofbasketball camps. Trajon bought this book and used the drills in it to makehim the player he became. Every highschool player and coach should own acopy of this book if they are serious about improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for either an individual or team training
I used this book, after being placed on the J.V. team at my high School my junior year.I had very little skill at all, but wanted desperately to become a better ball player. After purchasing this book, I used the drills in it for only 2 months and improved my game to a whole new level.I not only made the varsity team that next year, but was a starter and had a very good senior year.Since graduating, I have coached at the high school level, and this book worked wonders for the team.I have also used this book to work with younger individuals, and seen drastic improvement in their abilities.I would recommend this book to any young person who wants to better his/her skills, and to any coach to strengthen their teams fundamental abilities ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for basketball fans
As a yoga instructor and athletic trainer who works with professional athletes, I wish I had found this book sooner. I just read it and plan to reread it again. Amazing. Absolutely thought-provoking.You'll find yourself thinking about this one in the shower, just contemplating Phil's wisdom and how you can apply it to your own life. Anyone considering or presently on a path to spirituality and self awareness--no basketball interest or experience required--should read this book. If you want to gain a better understanding of the value of staying present in the moment, I urge you to pick up this book and let Phil Jackson enlighten you. If I ever decide to lead yoga teacher trainings in the future, this will be required reading! --Dana Edison, author and creator of "Dana Edison's Yoga Is Not One Size Fits All Custom Practice Journal" and audio instruction series.

5-0 out of 5 stars It brought me peace.
When I was going through a very hard time in my life, my boxing trainer recommended I read this book.I'm not a basketball fan and am not normally into self-help books either.Phil Jackson takes the reader down a spiritual road that overlaps with his career as a professional basketball coach.I've found some of his techniques and philosophies have brought great mental peace to me, while the stories of the professional sports business were interesting and entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brutally honest
If you like a teaspoon of New Age mumbo jumbo combined with a mustachioed author's psycho-babble, I suggest you check out Star Jones new book. Phil Jackson has had greatness thrust upon him. Michael Jordan, Stacey King, Kobe Bryant, and Shaq are the reason we know his name. Not his Jerry Garcia, Phoenix University degree, dimestore analysis of the spiritual side of coaching and people management. Make him the coach of the Trailblazers and see how great he is. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I read this every month
Hi My name is Boswell Hemmerich.Coach K can do no wrong. This book goes over how Duke calls each player's name with one syllable instead of two or even three - for example, Chris Duhon is known as 'Chris' instead of 'Chris-Duh-on' and Shelden Williams is 'Shel' instead of 'Shel-den'.This is why Duke and Coach K and this book are nuber 1!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars You'd have to be a true Blue Devil fan to like this book
I got this book thinking it might give me some insight into how Coach K motivates his teams, organizes his practice sessions, and instills leadership qualities in his athletes. What I got was a less than thrilling re-hash of some of his best quotes as seen through the eyes of a local news reporter. You'd have to be a true Blue Devil fan to like this book.I didn't, so I gave it to one of my co-workers who graduated from Duke.He likes it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Total Class
What an awesome book!I would compare this book to Rick Pitino's "Success is a Choice".Much of this book can be used as a guide for how somebody should conduct themselves in relationships.Basketball fans will love this book, as it uses examples from Coach K's life to illustrate points that he makes.Pick it up. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly what I expected
I was hoping to actually se some more analysis on the rivalry, but instead was mostly greeted with lots of commentary about the rivalry and its past.Granted, I was expecting that, but just had hoped that this book would address things from a quantitative perspective as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars UNC Worhsip, but funny
This book made me laugh out loud several times. I did get a little tired of his worship of UNC basketball and Dean Smith. The book was best when he remembered what it was about; the hatred between Duke and UNC. There were times he sort of wandered off into other areas, like his relationship with his father, and he described many more UNC games than Duke games. I thought the insight into certain players was done well though, JJ Redick, Melvin Scott, Sean May, for example. And he did do a pretty good job of researching and exploring the emotion of hatred, in a light hearted way. It was a good read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to the UNC b-ball book collection
A nice complement to my collection of Tar Heel basketball books. Less academic than "More than a Game," not as historically informative as "Blue Bloods," and more honest and personal than just about every other UNC B-ball book, including Dean Smith's (collaborated) memoir. An entertaining read for the most part, although the author's hatred veers close to psychopathy on occasion. ... Read more
