5-0 out of 5 stars A PRACTICAL AND QUICK STUDY GUIDE
I played a lot of basketball before taking on coaching my 6 year olds' team, but I had never coached.I digested the basics of this book in about an hour and it was a roadmap to get me started.I keep reading and using it as the season progresses.Very very good for first-time coaches for kids leagues of about 5-13 years old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only One Book Needed
I struggled looking for a book written for the experienced youth coach who doesn't know much about basketball.I coach four youth sports, but I never played organized basketball.I was at a loss for drills, plays and defensive philosophies. This book gave me a huge head start and Coach Faucher's style is easy and right for the kids.I enjoy planning and running my basketball practices far more than any other sport now. Thanks Coach Faucher.Do you have one for football, . . baseball, . . soccer??????

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Rocket Science
I read this book because I thought that it would help me coach a group of 5th graders in the fundamentals of basketball.I did not learn anything new after reading this book, but I also have played basketball for many years. What was valuable to me was the drills made available. If you know nothing of basketball you'll appreciate this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!
The book has a tremendous amount of positive basketball knowledge. Many coaches get away from fundamentals and this book goes into detail on the benefits of breaking everything down to the bear essentials.A great compliment to this book is the video "48 Championship Basketball Drills" which has some outstanding creative shooting drills.Sid Goldstein should be hailed as "El Sid" on a good effort and worthy teaching tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of its' kind
As a coach of a 5th and 6th grade boys basketball team I found this book a tremendous teaching tool this season. Most of the children I coach have had little or no formal teaching in basketball previous to me. This books true value comes from being geared towards all skill levels. A coach at my level, straight through coaches of High school varsity teams, can find drills to introduce to their players. 2-0 out of 5 stars OK on fundamentals; no-go on drills
I'm always looking for books that will help me with the teaching aspect of coaching (which also happens to be the most important). The author has the right idea of focusing on breaking things down to the fundamentals, butdoes only a so-so job of explaining them. The coverage is inconsistent;sometimes explanations are very clear, other times you're left to fill inblanks. The same is true of information provided on why certainfundamentals are important and why the methodology offered is the correctapproach.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner Coaches -- Buy this one!!!
This book is great for girl coaches from new to experienced. It is for the coach who wants to learn how to coach basketball the right way. I am a coach and have three daughters and I would hope that any coach that teaches any of my children would have at least a working knowledge of the information in this book. It is an easy read and a good reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the new coach
The author expertly guides the reader through the entire coaching process. Not only the sport and the basics, but also the the most important parts of coaching youths: planning, preperation and Parents!I am also impressed with the in-depth examination of the differences of coaching girls and boys.I definately recommend this book for new coaches of girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it, you won't be sorry!
This a very good basketball book for new, aspiring or even coaches with 2-3 years experience ... even if, like me, you are just a parent looking for ways to help your daughter take it to the next level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Insights about Teaching and Learning
Ron Gallimore and Swen Nater combine their incredible knowledge about teaching and basketball to deliver a new and insightful look at the teaching practice of John Wooden. The book is a wonderful balance of personal stories from Nater and insights about teaching and learning from Gallimore that demonstrate just how incredibly wise, intentional, and gifted The Coach was and is. This book demonstrates the hard work, preparation, courage, and commitment to continuous learning that defines quality teaching. A must read for every teacher and coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Swen Nater's book: You WILL learn!
Swen Nater knows John Wooden - that much is clear. Clear too, is what a great teacher John Wooden was and, continues to be. This is a book any teacher can learn from. Sure it is great for coaches, but when a teacher is looking for guidance on how to handle varying student potential within their class, is it better to treat everyone the same - or to treat each individual differently, according to their personality, talent, ability, commitment etc. as Wooden did? Swen does a great job of interjecting his own life's experience into the priniciples Wooden taught. And he uses those of "Alcindor", Wicks, Walton, Allen and others to make the stories fit the lesson. This is textbook material, or should be required reading for aspiring or experienced teachers - 5 Stars plus! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for youth basketball coaches
I have coached kids (boys and girls) in basketball of ages 4-12, this book provided the best information on what to do and what to expect.Particularly, the part of patience, repetition/reinforcement, and the fundalmentals. The recommended offensive plays (post interchange, wheel, shuffle, etc.) and defensive strategies (whether man-to-man or zone) are excellent.Additionally, the chapters on vision, motivational phrases, and running a practice are worth reading. The author recommends the use of parents during practice time, called "stations" to maximize proper skill development. This book is a must for those interested in coaching youth basketball.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book on B.Ball for youth, with tips for parents
This book does a good job of covering the basics, including the fundemental of shooting, dribbling, passing, pick and roll, give and go, fakes, etc. with good photos.Good section on defense fundamentals too. There are also sections on offense and defense (both man-to-man & zone)with diagrams. There are sections for coaches including running a practicecomplete with a check list.A good section for parents is added completewith motivational phrases.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide To Coaching youth Basketball
A woderful book. Short (156 pp.) and highly readable,McCarthy makes it all very simple.McCarthy covers the fundamentals (footwork, dribbling, rebounding, etc.) but intersperses his text with invaluable practicaladvice -- e.g., "I always say to drive as close to a defender aspossible. If he reacts and moves back into that lane, he will commit afoul."There is also a great emphasis on team play, and how toencourage kids to pass and play a team game. I have played and coachedbasketball for twenty five years. While this book covers enough basics fora novice, it also contains many valuable insights that I use in coaching a12 and under youth program today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a great book
I have read this book over and over again. It has been a useful tool is my basketball coaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail
I coached a camp this past summer in which a few coaches were discussing this book and referred to it as "The Holy Grail" of basketball books. To any coach looking for new perspectives and strategies, I would strongly recommend this book. You may not be able to use everything, and some of the information is a bit dated, but it prompted a million ideas of my own, and helped me plan out some fresh drills, plays, and defenses for my team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Team Improved with this Book
I have always been a fan of Roy Williams who knows well the system of Dean Smith. So, by default, I am a fan of Coach Smith.Previous reviews have aptly explained the features of the book but I wanted to focus on an aspect that directly led to my team winning more games over the past two years.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Greg
As a curriculum director of summer sports camps for Basketball I highly recommend this book to all coaches. It challenges players to learn proper techniques, but more importantly it challenges players to think about their decision making, and to understand concepts of vision and space. (Difficult for many, so lets help make it easier). The book is ideal for working with youth players, the philosophy behind the book and the drills are fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Physical Education Teacher...what is H.A.'s profession
Just out of curiosity, I would like to know the back ground on the person who reviewed this book named H.A.It is obvious that he or she did not have a background in education or youth developement. Having worked with over thousands of students I can safely say that H.A. doesn't have a clue on what kids can really understand. If it is over your head then you have no business trying to teach it to the kids.Feel free to reply or email..

5-0 out of 5 stars Owner/director of youth camps...great tool for any age.
As a director of youth basketball camps I found Dr. Garland's book priceless. There are few books written on space and movement like this one.You can never have enough drills to reinforce movement on and off the ball. The illustrations could help even the begginner level coach have a taste at success.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hardwood Magic
The NBA today basically ignores the NBA that was home to places like Syracuse, Cincinnati and Rochester. That is why first-person recollections are so important as the history of those seasons fade with the passing away of former players and owners.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hey, did I ever tell you about...
Imagine being invited to lunch with Red Auerbach and having him start a conversation with that line - maybe it's Larry Bird; maybe Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell; maybe Bob Cousy.Over half a century in the game of basketball and all the stories that come with it.I'm not even a Celtics fan, but still enjoyed the stories. You can't help but just sit back and enjoy listening.Combine Red Auerbach's character with one of today's best sports writers/authors, John Feinstein. You have a great formula for a really good book.An easy and enjoyable read for any basketball fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars dribbling redundancy
for those who tire easilly when tales are told, retold, rehashed, and generally lobbed around like tennis balls, this read should be avoided.however, if one enjoys the spoils of old-school hoops, bland jokes, thoughts on the decorum, feinstein offers an engaging bout.if i'm not mistaken, red nearly left the celtics in the late 70's (or so we were told at least 3 times).many of these little anecdotes appear several times throughout the tome.i'd be one to believe that a session at the china doll would be priceless...but that's it.one session...nothing more, nothing less.i get the impression that after several weeks at the lunch table, one would suffer from severe deja vu.my hunch is that the topics are rarely fresh and if a current event comes up, somehow red will relate back to something that occured back in the day.so, while feinstein reveres the sessions and somehow fancies himself as "in", i wouldn't be willing to go beyond this at face value.bottom line, they spend a morning eating egg rolls with the greatest basketball coach in world history. it translates well for a solid pile of words.one might even suggest that red is surrounded by a group of parrots. ... John Wooden was named ESPN's Coach of the Century for the way he led his UCLA basketball team to the top of the sporting world in the 1960s and '70s. Andrew Hill was a rebellious and sparingly used reserve on the squad before becoming a successful television executive. While it's doubtful that either would have predicted it at the time, the lessons imparted on the court by Wooden eventually helped Hill reach the top of his profession. And in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great little book!
I really enjoyed this book by Andy Hill. Not until he realized his own successes and failures did he fully see all that he learned from coach Wooden. The foundational principles taught by coach Wooden are one's that we can all admire."Make each day your masterpiece."Buy this book, then give it to a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice for anyone in a leadership position
The book begins with a brief summary of Hill's introduction to Wooden and Hill realization that the only reason he's made it this far is because Wooden's teachings so ingrained in his mind from his time at UCLA and that they are applicable to all aspects of life.He relates Wooden's 21 "secrets" to his business life, and demonstrates how they guided him to the top. It's amazing how perfectly these teachings fit into regular life.John Wooden is truly an enlightened soul.5-0 out of 5 stars The teachings of basketball related to the lessons in life!
Be Quick - But Don't Hurry! by Andrew Hill may be one of the most influential books I have ever read. The author teaches the reader about how to be successful in any aspect of life through the teachings of what John Wooden had taught him at UCLA.John Wooden is arguably the best coach of all time, for any sport or level of play, so it makes sense that the key to his achievement as a coach was based on a plan that truly worked. He called his "plan" the Pyramid of Success, and he enforced it upon every athlete that played for him.Andrew Hill was a great High School basketball player but did not shine in basketball as much at UCLA during the late 1960's and early 1970's, but the lessons he got out of John Wooden lead him to be a business success in the television broadcasting industry for CBS.If you are a fan of basketball, this book will interest you, because it relates basketball to succession in business, and makes the keys to business succession easy to understand. All in all, this book will teach you at least one lesson, and will probably leave you with ideas of changing your life style to achieve exactly what you want in life. This is a definite must read book. ... I really liked how the book was layed out. Easy to find the information you wanted.Very informative, easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely complete! -- a must-have book for coaches at all levels!
As a basketball coach who reads a lot of books, coaching materials, and so forth for personal use and for my hoopsu.com reviews, I have read many so-called 'guides to basketball'.Some are decent, but most of them are so basic and watered-down that you could learn more watching an 8-year old in her driveway. The Complete Guide To Girls' Basketball is not one of those books.

Mike Mullaney is very generous sharing his wealth of knowledge regarding instructing kids in all aspects of youth basketball. I have purchased several books on teaching youth basketball, and this book is the most comprehensive for drills and situations. Disregard the title for Girls, an advantage for a coach who teaches any gender. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated principles for basketball thoroughbreds
"Attacking Zone Defenses(second edition)," by John Kresse provides sophisticated basketball principles for basketball thoroughbreds. This three part book is comprehensive and well written...it is also very motivational. However, in my opinion part one...which includes chapters on; basic principles, rules to win by; the balanced machine; and planning each trip downcourt can help teams that are 13-years old and under. 4-0 out of 5 stars The game has changed. Learn the new zone attack.
Beat the zone by creating triangles and passing was how it was taught in my day. Today you'll see the same fundamentals enhanced with picks, back picks, and gap dribbling... heresy 25 years ago. This book teaches the newconcepts that are essential to coaching today. I read it cover to cover andnow use it as an important reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars if you are an X's and O's technician - great book!
The book has many many zone offenses. Some against specific zones and some good for any zone. They are mostly continuities. Very detailed descriptions for each offense, very thorough and effective. I adopted one zone offensefor my 8th grade team and achieved immediate results. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Book
This book takes you through all the facets of the motion offense from a basic few to a more complex strategy. If you have the talent to use the motion offense this book will help you utilize their talent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Thorough Book
This is a great book, very well written and easy to understand. It moves from the simple to more complicated without one being overwhelmed. You can "get off" at any time you want according to your personel and the level or age group you are coaching. If you've got no big guys, this offense can stir up enough movement to keep a bigger team honest. There's a lot of options and information there, it's a matter of taking what you want.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book over motion offense
This book is the best motion book that I have read.It gives you so much informaion that you have to read the book again to go through it all.The first time I read this book I was overwhelmed, but after further readings I figured out you cannot do all the options, you just need to pick out the ones that best suit your personel.Excellent book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Can I give it 6 stars?
The ABA.Dr. J., McGinnis, Bad News Barnes, Moses and even Wilt! The ABA came along before ESPN, at a time when even the NBA was barely televised. This league was fantastic and Pluto tells a very detailed account of the history and stars of the ABA.
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely belongs in your collection
Loose Balls and Tall Tales goes side by side on any bookshelf, they are definite must haves. One tells you about the ABA (Loose Balls), the other the NBA (Tall Tales), and the stories told in both gives you an insight into the leagues and the characters that belonged in them.Im partial to Loose Balls as i am a fan of the old ABA and well, there are'nt too many books out there on the ABA.If your a fan of the old school and want to find out more about the beginnings and struggles of both leagues, these books are the way to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Funny Look at the ABA
Terry Pluto's book is a very funny look at the American Basketball Association. He interviewed several people who were involved with the league and told the story of the league through their stories.
