5-0 out of 5 stars A PRACTICAL AND QUICK STUDY GUIDE
I played a lot of basketball before taking on coaching my 6 year olds' team, but I had never coached.I digested the basics of this book in about an hour and it was a roadmap to get me started.I keep reading and using it as the season progresses.Very very good for first-time coaches for kids leagues of about 5-13 years old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only One Book Needed
I struggled looking for a book written for the experienced youth coach who doesn't know much about basketball.I coach four youth sports, but I never played organized basketball.I was at a loss for drills, plays and defensive philosophies. This book gave me a huge head start and Coach Faucher's style is easy and right for the kids.I enjoy planning and running my basketball practices far more than any other sport now. Thanks Coach Faucher.Do you have one for football, . . baseball, . . soccer??????

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Rocket Science
I read this book because I thought that it would help me coach a group of 5th graders in the fundamentals of basketball.I did not learn anything new after reading this book, but I also have played basketball for many years. What was valuable to me was the drills made available. If you know nothing of basketball you'll appreciate this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for youth basketball coaches
I have coached kids (boys and girls) in basketball of ages 4-12, this book provided the best information on what to do and what to expect.Particularly, the part of patience, repetition/reinforcement, and the fundalmentals. The recommended offensive plays (post interchange, wheel, shuffle, etc.) and defensive strategies (whether man-to-man or zone) are excellent.Additionally, the chapters on vision, motivational phrases, and running a practice are worth reading. The author recommends the use of parents during practice time, called "stations" to maximize proper skill development. This book is a must for those interested in coaching youth basketball.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book on B.Ball for youth, with tips for parents
This book does a good job of covering the basics, including the fundemental of shooting, dribbling, passing, pick and roll, give and go, fakes, etc. with good photos.Good section on defense fundamentals too. There are also sections on offense and defense (both man-to-man & zone)with diagrams. There are sections for coaches including running a practicecomplete with a check list.A good section for parents is added completewith motivational phrases.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide To Coaching youth Basketball
A woderful book. Short (156 pp.) and highly readable,McCarthy makes it all very simple.McCarthy covers the fundamentals (footwork, dribbling, rebounding, etc.) but intersperses his text with invaluable practicaladvice -- e.g., "I always say to drive as close to a defender aspossible. If he reacts and moves back into that lane, he will commit afoul."There is also a great emphasis on team play, and how toencourage kids to pass and play a team game. I have played and coachedbasketball for twenty five years. While this book covers enough basics fora novice, it also contains many valuable insights that I use in coaching a12 and under youth program today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Soccer Drills: The Baffled Parent's Guide
I found this book to be very useful.I am a 1st time soccer coach this year and I love the fact that this book went step by step and that it divided things out according to age.I had my 1st practice last night and it was a huge success.Thank you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Drills
This another good soccer book with great games. It's a great supplement to Coching Youth Soccer:A Baffled Parent's Guide, however if you are planning on only purchasing one go with Coaching Youth Soccer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great drills with no lines
This book has great drills involving the entire team so the kids don't have to stand in line waiting for their turn, getting antsy and goofing off.I'm coaching U12 boys and while I thought the first section of drills was a bit basic the rest were awesome. And looking back, the basic drills are good for warm-ups and fun, short little exercises. There's an index in the back that shows you which drills help with which skills.I highly recommend this book.I'm looking forward to putting the drills in action. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the thinking Coach
I got this book just as I was about to coach a new teeball team and found its insight very helpful. Not a book about what drills to use but about motivation, handling people and protecting peoples love of the sport.More cerebral than I would expect in a coaching book. I used much of the material in my business career. Now I am starting his next book, "Shooting in the Dark".

5-0 out of 5 stars Turn your coaching career around like this book turned mine.
I coach volleyball in grade school and junior high school, and I usually get the "B teams" (the leftovers who are not as talented as the girls on the "A" team.) Therefore, if there ever was a cryingneed for a book on how to coach these types of athletes, this book morethan served its purpose for me. Actually, this book had a positive effecton me since it saved my coaching career. 5-0 out of 5 stars HS Coach Reviewer - Please Stay in MI and Out of VA
I don't doubt for a minute that you completely missed the theme and messages of this book - you expose your true colors and attitudes towards kids with your "cross-eyed, overweight child" and "fat, blind kid" pejoratives."Players must understand their skilllevel limits them" - I can hear you now getting that message (loudly, clearly and strongly, no doubt to toughen them up for the "realworld" - yeah, right) across to young adults on a daily basis.Whatmagic you must weave in the lives of these young people. If thegeneralizations fit, go ahead and wear them - clearly you have no use forany child that isn't contributing to that bottom line (for you) - WIN. Rest easy that your opinion is the dominant one in the youth coachingranks, however - and thus the need for this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I'm a second year coach with very limited playing experience.I played soccer during elementary school but it was essentially mob ball. This book has helped a great deal. It gives great suggestions for organizing practices and the drills, ahem I mean games, are great. The problem, analysis, solution section is also very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!Highly Recommended!
This book helped organize my practices and provided ideas for drills that kept my U8 Boys team interested the entire season.I received numerous compliments from parents that their kids enjoyed the variety of "games" (i.e. drills) we played in practice. My team went 11-2 this past season and all my players chose to return for the spring season over baseball and other sports.I honestly feel this book improved my coaching style and played a large part in the success of our team.

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Hit for Cal Ripken Jr.
Great book for parents with kids involved with sports. Very sensible advice. Ripken shares experiences he had with his own children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A grand slam for youth sports!!!
I have been honored to have coached youth sports for sixteen seasons.I've often struggled with what is best for the kids in the long run against a parent's internal drive for competition, and to win. This book should nearly be a mandate for every parent in this country who has kids playing sports.Cal, along with Rick Wolff, who is Chairman of the Center for Sports Parenting, have created an outstanding book that covers all the bases about child development, skill development, and long-term success. In a society where news is filled with overzealous, and even violent parents in kids sports, this book offers the cure.It even provides the secret to creating long-term athletic success (and it is not what most parents think it is).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning coaches
I am very pleased with this book.Great outline of all aspects of the sport.A must have for beginning coaches and/or parents with kids starting to play lacrosse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lacrosse Newbie
Since it is nearly impossible to find anything in "Lacrosse for Adults" for those who are new to the sport and would love to learn to play, I got this book in the hopes of learning the basics. I haven't had a chance to put the new knowledge to the test in either play or instruction, but it was a very valuable tool for the novice player or coach. GO MAMMOTH! GO OUTLAWS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Helpful
I am the parent of two young boys who are showing an interest in lacrosse and recently signed up for a local youth team.I grew up playing baseball and soccer and did not have any idea how the game of lacrosse is played. This book has given me the knowledge of basic skills that I need to play with my sons now and I can see that its more advanced chapters will be useful for years to come. Although its title suggests that it is geared for coaching, I highly recommend it to any parent who is interested in learning about lacrosse and supporting their children as they become involved with this growing sport. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Greg
As a curriculum director of summer sports camps for Basketball I highly recommend this book to all coaches. It challenges players to learn proper techniques, but more importantly it challenges players to think about their decision making, and to understand concepts of vision and space. (Difficult for many, so lets help make it easier). The book is ideal for working with youth players, the philosophy behind the book and the drills are fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Physical Education Teacher...what is H.A.'s profession
Just out of curiosity, I would like to know the back ground on the person who reviewed this book named H.A.It is obvious that he or she did not have a background in education or youth developement. Having worked with over thousands of students I can safely say that H.A. doesn't have a clue on what kids can really understand. If it is over your head then you have no business trying to teach it to the kids.Feel free to reply or email..

5-0 out of 5 stars Owner/director of youth camps...great tool for any age.
As a director of youth basketball camps I found Dr. Garland's book priceless. There are few books written on space and movement like this one.You can never have enough drills to reinforce movement on and off the ball. The illustrations could help even the begginner level coach have a taste at success.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner youth coaches book
I purchased about 5 books on coaching soccer, particularly youth soccer (13 and under). This was by far the best of the lot, most covered only rules and strategy and not teaching basic skills. This is the first coaches book I found that actually explained how to kick a ball!It does a great job in explaining how to teach the basic skills, which is what most of the young players need. The drills were helpful and made a definite improvement in the play of the team.

4-0 out of 5 stars great coaching skills for beginner coaches
goes in detail of coaching young kids [fantastic

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent book for beginners and intermediates
This is an okay book for beginner and intermediate level youth soccer coaching. There are two main problems with this book. One is that the illustrations are extremely crude, often reduced to literally stick figures. The other problem is that, having collected several other youth soccer coaching books and videos, I'm not sure that I actually learned anything new from this book, and so in retrospect, I don't think I would have gotten this book. For beginner coaches learning how to coach very young kids (i.e., ages 4-8), Karl Dewazien's "FUNdamental Soccer" is a better book in terms of the illustrations, and in its emphasis on how to handle these very young children. For a more detailed explanation of tactics and intermediate to advanced skills for older children (ages 8+), Alan Hargreaves' book "Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer" treats essentially the same topics in a much more thorough fashion. For teaching soccer dribbling "moves", Wiel Coerver's "SCORE!" is the ultimate book (although, as I noted in my review of that book, the companion videos, viewed in slow motion, are more useful). However, if you haven't gotten any soccer coaching books yet, and are looking for your first ever youth soccer coaching book for slightly older kids (ages 8+), this book might be useful. It does have a cookbook set of week-by-week soccer drills that will get you through your first soccer season, if you don't want to have to think too hard about what it is that you're going to have to do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is truly excellent!
This book is the best I've ever read on the subject of young female athletes; Silby and Smith have a complete understanding of the challenges faced by girls who are involved in athletics, and the book gives example after example of how a young female athlete can cope with various critical issues. As the step-father of a female high-school athlete whose team won the Maryland soccer championship, I can attest to how valuable the book has been to her.5-0 out of 5 stars A Skaters Mom Knows!
What an incredable book! As a skaters mom, I found it insightful, informative, and amazingly DEAD ON! My 12 year old daughter has gone through all the doubts and anxiety that comes with the sport of Figure Skating. This book has been a wonderful guide to handling all the situations that arise. Even if your skater is an amazing talent and you never come across the problems of self-esteem, performance anxiety, or "bad skate days", you must, MUST BY THIS BOOK ANYWAY...JUST IN CASE!

4-0 out of 5 stars Title is deceiving...
Be aware, this book is more like Sports Psychology 101 than it is understanding and guiding female athletes. If you are a coach working with female athletes and you are looking at better ways to coach, read some of the UNC Womens National Team Soccer books. If you are looking for an intermediate book on Sports Psychology with examples using female athletes, this is what you get.It deals with individual issues for specific athletes with little applications to team sports. Parents who are looking to help their daughters with some psychology issues will find this book helpful. However, the remedy is usually seek professional help. This is an unique and rare sports psychology book geared towards female athletes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Aresh Look At Developing New Hockey Players
If you've wondered what's happened to Stanley Cup winner Bruce Driver since he wrapped up his illustrious 15-year career playing hockey with the New Jersey Devils, you'll find the answer in the new book, "The Baffled Parent's Guide to Coaching Youth Hockey".Admirably, Driver has been teaching young, would-be hockey stars the secrets of the game.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book that touches on every aspect
Overall, this is a great book that touches on all aspects of hockey. I am a high school hockey coach and this book has some really nice drills and information in it. We are using a couple already in practice that work great. One thing that I was hoping for (4 stars instead of 5)was a little more intense drills or more detailed info for the higher levels of hockey. Also, it only has 3 goalie drills which was a little disturbing. As a goalie coach as well as an assistant, I find that upsetting since the position is so important, but yet it's the most overlooked. However if you are a parent or coach looking for a book that touches on every aspect of hockey as well as drills this is definitely the one. I do find the parts on dealing with parents and setting up practice plans also helpful. It was well written and has a lot of great info from an NHL player and Stanley Cup winner. It is one of the best books that puts it all together for you to learn the sport of hockey. I would suggest picking up the book: Complete hockey instruction by Dave Chambers with this book and as far as goaltending is concerned, go to www.hockeygoaltender.com. That has some of the best info concerning that position. With these 3 items you would have a pretty good arsenal on coaching and understanding the sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed Clarity, Detail & Readability!
I was floored by thoroughness of expertise and professionalism in this book, which goes hand-in-hand with the sheer passion for the game and wisdom in teaching children that comes through on every page.No detail of technique, sportsmanship or strategy is left out here, and the book is as useful a guide for would-be coaches inexperienced in the ways of the game as it is for veteran coaches looking broaden their knowledge base.

Buy this book then read it , think about it then reread it. I bought the hardcover 10 months ago. I immediately saw I was heading down the wrong road. I completely "stopped" with my child. I knew I was making some mistakes that needed correcting. this book was a godsend. No matter how serious or casual the goals for you child , this book will make you think and help you develop a more positive long term approach. My daughter and I are still extremely involved, we just enjoy it more. Now she drags me to the tennis court. I reread this book every other month. My thanks to the author. enough said

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully and Simply Written
I like the way this book is written. Yes, it's for "kids", but it doesn't read like a child-like book. It speaks to children, coaches and parents in a way that is intelligent, clear and empathetic.

I wish this book was around years ago (I am now an empty nester, my sons are married). My two sons played the junior tennis tournaments, but are now into golf. 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and effective
A brand new soccer coach facing six very wild and unruly 6 year-old boys hoping I could teach them the basics of the game of soccer. No easy task.A key concept here is that we need to give very young kids the chance to try new things out, develop their confidence and have fun so they keep coming back - and that this is far more important than winning. This book was a lifesaver my first year.It was rained on, stepped on and dragged in and out of the equipment bag many times during the season. But under all that muck and abuse are some very creative ideas to get the kids engaged while also teaching them basic skills like dribbling, passing and defending.Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for any new soccer coach
I love this book. It's easy to read with fun games for the kids to play at practice and good tips on dealing with the parents. Good job David and Scott. It really is all about having fun for the kids at this age. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners... Not for kids older than 7
This book could be called Soccer 101...It's a great place to start if you have 4 to 6 year old children. It shows you how to teach the basics and how to keep them interested in the game..4-0 out of 5 stars A very good, basic book, for the first time "parent-coach"
This is a very good, basic book, for the parent wishing to START coaching youth soccer, at theearliest level. The book assumes no prior knowledge of the sport. Any additional coaching skills will need to be acquired byexperience, coaching with other individuals, watching the game, and byobtaining other, more advanced books, including more advanced drills andfocusing on individual moves. This is a good book, for that parentgoing out to the field on that first saturday, as well, to try tounderstand and enjoy the GAME more fully!

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a very good introduction coaching to kids soccer.

4-0 out of 5 stars An older guide
I was in search of some resources to guide a brand new coach who isn't all that familiar with the technical details of the game. This book contains lengthy descriptions of the rules and explanations of the different roles each player has on the court.I found all of this helpful. My only complaint is since this is an older book it does not mention rally scoring which is predominatly in use today. The book centers on describing the old 15 point system, and the rules associated with that.I'm glad that it took the time to explain what each job on the court is and so I am happy with my purchase as a whole.

3-0 out of 5 stars great!
This book was very useful.. I consulted it as my Bible for my first season coaching volleyball. Includes many drills, graphics and more.
