4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This is a very good book, as all of Halberstam's books have been that I have read.Nothing particularily about Bill's life stands out about the book as it is all very interesting.Bill did separate from his wife of twenty-some years in 2005.The book goes into a lot of detail on his father's coaching career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book - for Belichick fans (only)
If youare a Bill Belichick fan, a Patriots fan, or a football fan (in that order) you will enjoy this book. Very detailed. Halberstam is a terriffic writer. Only he could dig this deep into the life of an otherwise (forgive me Pats fans) boring guy and piece together the journey of his life, his upbringing and his experiences which prepared him for the pinnacle of football success.
3-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Hit for Cal Ripken Jr.
Great book for parents with kids involved with sports. Very sensible advice. Ripken shares experiences he had with his own children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A grand slam for youth sports!!!
I have been honored to have coached youth sports for sixteen seasons.I've often struggled with what is best for the kids in the long run against a parent's internal drive for competition, and to win. This book should nearly be a mandate for every parent in this country who has kids playing sports.Cal, along with Rick Wolff, who is Chairman of the Center for Sports Parenting, have created an outstanding book that covers all the bases about child development, skill development, and long-term success. In a society where news is filled with overzealous, and even violent parents in kids sports, this book offers the cure.It even provides the secret to creating long-term athletic success (and it is not what most parents think it is).

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book
I have read this book over and over again. It has been a useful tool is my basketball coaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail
I coached a camp this past summer in which a few coaches were discussing this book and referred to it as "The Holy Grail" of basketball books. To any coach looking for new perspectives and strategies, I would strongly recommend this book. You may not be able to use everything, and some of the information is a bit dated, but it prompted a million ideas of my own, and helped me plan out some fresh drills, plays, and defenses for my team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Team Improved with this Book
I have always been a fan of Roy Williams who knows well the system of Dean Smith. So, by default, I am a fan of Coach Smith.Previous reviews have aptly explained the features of the book but I wanted to focus on an aspect that directly led to my team winning more games over the past two years.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty "Good"
I enjoyed this book.It was exectly what I expected, a little bit of insight, a little bit of instruction and a little bit of personal observation.4-0 out of 5 stars Good new coach book with many team building exercises
I read this book after reading Anson Dorrance's Training Soccer Champions and Lauren Gregg's The Champions Within. This book is better for the new coach who may be just forming their coaching attitudes and style. For coaches of totally dedicated Premier level teams or higher, the other two books are probably better.Catch Them Being Good shares many of the viewpoints of the other two books on building teams, motivating players, and forming strong positive attitudes. The other two books had better technical information and (perhaps because I read them first) struck me more powerfully than this one. This book was more readable for a beginning coach.I think the team building exercises are a real plus and are the biggest items I will take away from reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Experience
Ok, this book is wonderful.Tony and Colleen put it all together for you coaches and parents out there! The truth in black and white. I am a product of this type of coaching. I was blessed to have been a soccer player who was led by Dr. Colleen Hacker at Pacific Lutheran University. She caught me being good more often than bad and I thrived mostly as a young woman but also on the soccer field. The book takes you through the life of a season from the very beginning to the end.Tony gives examples of experiences he has had with players/coaches on the US National Team.A valuable tool and great food for thought. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Handbook for High School Fastpitch Coaches
I have coached for over ten years now and have found this book to be the most comprehensive, theoretically sound, user friendly coaching handbook on the market.Veroni has organized the information most effectively using charts and diagrams in addition to her commentary. This is THE book to purchase for both the beginning or experienced high school coach.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Youth Softball - Good Reference
This book is comprehensive and is aimed at the coach of a team consisting of younger or much younger players. Kathy Veroni sounds like a tough, fair, and thorough coach. Imagine driving a group of late-arriving players 10 miles out of town and telling then to jog back to practice. No wonder West Illinois U has a great softball team.5-0 out of 5 stars Great for High School Coaching
This is a very well laid out book and easy to follow.I would highly recommend this book for coaching high school or college age girls.Might be a little deep for younger athetes but could be adapted. Many drills are included in this book, and I found the philosophies especially interesting.Brought out a lot of simple points I had never thought of before. ... "Tennis Beyond Big Shots" provides plenty of topnotch instruction about strokes and strategy that will help you win matches. This 224-page paperback, spiced with pithy quotes, also gives readers superb suggestions about how to win friends and enjoy your tennis, regardless of the outcome.
5-0 out of 5 stars A tennis enthusiast "must read"
This book gives a unique perspective on the game of tennis. It provides strategies and approaches to raise your game without reliance upon low percentage power shots and changes to swing mechanics. They really work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aresh Look At Developing New Hockey Players
If you've wondered what's happened to Stanley Cup winner Bruce Driver since he wrapped up his illustrious 15-year career playing hockey with the New Jersey Devils, you'll find the answer in the new book, "The Baffled Parent's Guide to Coaching Youth Hockey".Admirably, Driver has been teaching young, would-be hockey stars the secrets of the game.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book that touches on every aspect
Overall, this is a great book that touches on all aspects of hockey. I am a high school hockey coach and this book has some really nice drills and information in it. We are using a couple already in practice that work great. One thing that I was hoping for (4 stars instead of 5)was a little more intense drills or more detailed info for the higher levels of hockey. Also, it only has 3 goalie drills which was a little disturbing. As a goalie coach as well as an assistant, I find that upsetting since the position is so important, but yet it's the most overlooked. However if you are a parent or coach looking for a book that touches on every aspect of hockey as well as drills this is definitely the one. I do find the parts on dealing with parents and setting up practice plans also helpful. It was well written and has a lot of great info from an NHL player and Stanley Cup winner. It is one of the best books that puts it all together for you to learn the sport of hockey. I would suggest picking up the book: Complete hockey instruction by Dave Chambers with this book and as far as goaltending is concerned, go to www.hockeygoaltender.com. That has some of the best info concerning that position. With these 3 items you would have a pretty good arsenal on coaching and understanding the sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed Clarity, Detail & Readability!
I was floored by thoroughness of expertise and professionalism in this book, which goes hand-in-hand with the sheer passion for the game and wisdom in teaching children that comes through on every page.No detail of technique, sportsmanship or strategy is left out here, and the book is as useful a guide for would-be coaches inexperienced in the ways of the game as it is for veteran coaches looking broaden their knowledge base.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent afternoon read
I loved Coach Gagliardi's methods. Although, I don't agree with everything he believes in that it can be transferred to the workplace; I do think he has a outlook that more businesses should look at. Simple quick read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Business Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor
Buy this book then read it , think about it then reread it. I bought the hardcover 10 months ago. I immediately saw I was heading down the wrong road. I completely "stopped" with my child. I knew I was making some mistakes that needed correcting. this book was a godsend. No matter how serious or casual the goals for you child , this book will make you think and help you develop a more positive long term approach. My daughter and I are still extremely involved, we just enjoy it more. Now she drags me to the tennis court. I reread this book every other month. My thanks to the author. enough said

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully and Simply Written
I like the way this book is written. Yes, it's for "kids", but it doesn't read like a child-like book. It speaks to children, coaches and parents in a way that is intelligent, clear and empathetic.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had read earlier....
I wish this book was around years ago (I am now an empty nester, my sons are married). My two sons played the junior tennis tournaments, but are now into golf. There is so much useful information and guidance I wish I had access to when my kids were growing up. Kudos to Keith for a book critically important for any tennis parent. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars OK
This book is helpful for a coach trying to start a program. There are many things that a new coach could use.The ideas worked well for Wooden 30+ years ago, so some of it could be outdated. But most of it is pretty good. 2-0 out of 5 stars Never played volleyball before?
Now I realize that I have had more experience in volleyball then most people but this book was insulting to my intelligence. If you are a knowledgeable player turned coach then don't waste your money. Many of the notions are outdated and many of drills a five year old could invent. This book was written by great volleyball minds, but for some reason it falls short in all areas. If you are a new to this sport as a coach or player then this book is great for you. I gave it two stars because there was one clever drill in it that I will use. ... Read more
