5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition is Way Better
I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - Helped My Teams
I purchased this book as an athletic director.I got this and the other sports books in the series.I received excellent feedback on the tennis book. The coach did not know much about training, but said the book is easy to read and understand.even the exercises he did not know how to do, there were photos and descriptions which made it easy for the players to use it.Definitely worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good general not sport specific
It is a good guide to weight training for someone just starting out and it is easy to understand. But, If you have any other books in the series you do not need this one. The tennis guide is very much like the one for soccer. This book is not very sport specific, if you are looking for a strengh and conditioning book more sport specific to tennis, Complete Conditioning for Tennis by the USTA would be a more valuable resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very good book, but has some dangers
On the volley, Braden advocates having a forehand grip and a backhand grip. Not having a single volley grip has some advantages, but is a very distinct minority view.5-0 out of 5 stars fire your coach!
What a fantastic book!I've owned it for just two weeks, and have already seen huge improvements in my game, first by switching from the "natural" Continental to an Eastern forehand grip, and then by practicing Vic's recommendations on the serve until it finally ... clicked. We're talking about a 200% percent improvement on these strokes, and a corresponding improvement in my match scores. Thanks, Vic!5-0 out of 5 stars Tennis For The Future!
Tennis 2000 is a comprehensive guide to the game of tennis. You will learn about all the aspects of the game from: grips, strokes, strategy, mental issues; moreover some deeper insights from the players of the pastand the present. Many of the concepts are still relevant today: "puncturing some myths that hold people back ".Vic Braden is apioneer, merging sports science together with modern coaching methods; andincluding the experience of notable players such as Rod Laver, Roy Emerson,Billie Jean King, Jack Kramer; and a host of others who have contributed totennis. The Champions speak through him with a transference that isnatural; and filled with hope for all levels of play." WinningTennis Strokes " and " Quick Cures for Common Tennis Problems" are videos which would beuseful companions to the book which givea visual representation of the ideas in Tennis 2000.Coaches who feel thattheir demonstrations are weak can learn stroke technique in a short periodwith cues that are simple to understand. As the National Governing Bodyput it: " Are your demonstrations right? "The two videos helpedme to learn the proper demonstrations for which I will always be grateful. One of Braden's teaching gifts is the ability to put over complex technicalinformation in a fun, enjoyable, natural manner - not an easy task toachieve - furthermore giving cues that a learner can appreciate.Coachesdo find it difficult to impart correct methods in an appropriate mannerwhen old habits refuse to go away.Vic Bradens other videos; and bookshave helped me to realize the expansive nature of this sport.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
This book does an excellent job at covering all the aspects of playing and coaching tennis. He divides tennis into 3 parts:the physical, the mental, and the emotional and he covers all three areas well. For example, he writes about your "role" when you play someone:are you the underdog or the favorite (he gives several other roles too)?He explains how to be comfortable with your role and how to excell in your role.He also writes about the different types of player personalities and how to best motivate them as a coach.I thought this book was just great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Tennis
This is an outstanding book that deals with every aspect of coaching tennis. The book is very easy to read and includes charts, diagrams and photos to supplement the excellent techniques described.A must for anysuccessful tennis coach!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to techniques, theory and drills for tennis
This book is great for the beginner, intermediate or even an advanced coach/player.No matter what level player the reader is, Kriese gives good advice on getting mentally and physically ready for the game. His advicecovers stretching and physical training, advice on how to play the gameagainst many types of players, (ex. players with good forehands and weakbackhands, players who are fast and come to the net, etc.), drills toprepare for the game, photos of techniques, diagrams on drills...and Icould go on.I've been using this book for almost two years to get tips ondrills and techniques as a player/coach.It's helped improve my game andthe players I teach.I highly recommend it! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed With the Tennis Ball Machine Drills
When I bought this book I was hopeful that the chapter on the Ball Machine drills would help me to use my new ball machine more efficiently.I was disappointed by the fact that the chapter was geared for more than one player and the machine, rather than just one player and the machine.I believe that most of the drills can be revised so that they work with just one player, but it didn't really contain what I was looking for.I didn't feel there was that much value added to when I go out with the machine before reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible number of great drills
While I agree with the other reviewer who said that the drills were tailored to a clinic setting, I have found that many of the drills can easily be adapted to as few as two people. The value in the book is in learning the concepts that each drill is meant to teach. If you need work on a particular part of your game, there is most likely a drill that can help you.
4-0 out of 5 stars great basic catalog of useful drills
This bookis a comprehensive, easy-to-read list of drills for all levels. The pictures and clear directions simplify my coaching andserve as an invaluable resource on the fly!Buy this book if you don't have oodles ofextratime to read fluffy descriptions and just need creative basic drillideas to serve as a backbone for your practices. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor
Buy this book then read it , think about it then reread it. I bought the hardcover 10 months ago. I immediately saw I was heading down the wrong road. I completely "stopped" with my child. I knew I was making some mistakes that needed correcting. this book was a godsend. No matter how serious or casual the goals for you child , this book will make you think and help you develop a more positive long term approach. My daughter and I are still extremely involved, we just enjoy it more. Now she drags me to the tennis court. I reread this book every other month. My thanks to the author. enough said

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully and Simply Written
I like the way this book is written. Yes, it's for "kids", but it doesn't read like a child-like book. It speaks to children, coaches and parents in a way that is intelligent, clear and empathetic.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had read earlier....
I wish this book was around years ago (I am now an empty nester, my sons are married). My two sons played the junior tennis tournaments, but are now into golf. There is so much useful information and guidance I wish I had access to when my kids were growing up. Kudos to Keith for a book critically important for any tennis parent. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete Conditioning for Tenis Review
I gave this book 4 stars mainly beause here is nothing out there like it. Power tennis training is not even close to the coverage of this book. This book is for serious players in good shape already. I would say it is designed more for Juniors and Satalite hopefulls than the weekend player. If your working on the gut and hoping this will bring your game up you need to do more work before getting started on this book.It has great streching tips and fantastic agility drills and explains how to train based on playing tennis. What it contains is very good. The training programs however are written by people with no real world lives. They are all pros or have been around pros without I would suspect a normal 9-5 family and job. It references a lot of weight training equipment that must be in a nice gym. It covers and gets into more tournament fitness building strategy rather than an average weekend game. A modified version for the average guy would be nice.A very big dissapointment was nutrition. I was really hoping to learn when to eat, what to eat before a match etc. This book covered nothing about nutrition. It talked about water and sodium, thats it. If your really into tennis and run three times a week already and work out some, you can benefit from this book. The fitness test is good and gives you goals to shoot for but you better be self motivated. If they add two more chapters; nutrition and a modified weekend players life, home workout system this book would be perfect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Tennis Conditioning
Paul Roetert was formerly the Head of Sport Science for USTA Player Development in Key Biscayne. He has been instrumental in advancing US tennis scientifically and shows why here. This book was created for thetennis player and coach and perhaps is the best book on the marketregarding conditioning for tennis (there are 3 or 4 other inferior books). For myself, I think it is a bit basic (a primer) and doesn't cover enoughscientific applications and how to scientifically create a conditioningprogram. Anyhow, I think that is for the German DTB (e.g., look up RichardSchoenborn books). Otherwise, Paul and Todd (a top trainer) would limittheir audience. The authors produce an excellent resource for most seriousplayers perhaps applicable to all. This book should rank among the top tentennis books written in the past decade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I found the book to be very helpful and informative.I have just begun playing competitively for the past year and found that the graphics/steps really have helped my game. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is just developing their game.I have bought other table tennis books, but they lacked the graphics this book has, so I am very happy with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Table Tennis Book For Beginners-Intermediates
This book is one of the best book on table tennis that I have ever read. The clear and concise text makes this book very readable. While you may not turn into a table tennis champion overnight, following the instructions by Mr. Hodges by disciplined practice, a newcomer to the sport can learn the game, but it can also be used as a reference for intermediate players to correct their stroke or to improve it.4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent slient coach!
I highly recommend this book as a supplementary material for references as technique guidelines and theory support. In fact, I dont' think anyone can actually learn any sport from any book, however well-written the book may be.Table-tennis is no exception. As is indicated in the book, to learn to play the game, you need to practice. With this book, however, you can correct your weakness, look up for any question you gathered during the practice. The book covers almost all the basic drills in the modern table-tennis game.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BY FAR THE BEST BOOK ON DOUBLES
I've read several of the popular books on doubles including The Art of Doubles by Pat Blaskower, Laugh and Win by Vic Braden, ect. In my opinion these other books are interesting at best but don't hold a candle to Unlimited Doubles. The author's way of breaking down the game into simple concepts REALLY helped me to understand. I no longer worry about all the other things most coaches try to get you to think about like "Who takes the ball in the middle?", and "Should I play the add or deuce court?"I no longer worry about all that becauseI FINALLY UNDERSTAND THE GAME! I'm poaching more than I ever have, I'm taking the initiative to win and I LOVE IT! No longer do I stand on the court hoping something good will happen. I'm closing into the net and using angles for the first time in my life! I'll be reading this book over and over again. Thank you SOOO much!

2-0 out of 5 stars Fair Primer for beginners and intermediate doubles players
After reading or hearing many good things about this book, I thought it was a no-miss. However, this book has to rank in the bottom quarter of my collection, not to mention overpriced. Other doubles books are far superior in translating the essence of doubles. Tourdo simplifies doubles to twelve lessons (aka Point Control System): the essence is being proactive in moving in and to the ball, taking control of the tempo, and aggressive consistency. There is very little on the importance of serving and returning, neutralizing volleys vs attacking volleys, different poaching cues and doubles formations, etc. Since it is so simple, it is actually quite palatable for the singles player trying to become a bit better at doubles or for the 3.0 player trying to become a better doubles player. However, since it offers so little, most players might be wanting to digest a bit more (check out Blaskower's or Braden's doubles books which are superior). I would also recommend it to "mindless" players since often 2-3 (rather than 50) simple cues might make a significant difference. Not recommended for serious players, doubles specialists, or coaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is terrific!
For any player who wants to improve or enjoy the game more, Jak's book is a must.It offers many practical tips for singles and doubles. The sections on developing topsin, effective breathing during a match, club competition doubles strategies and practice routines are alone worth the price.
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book!
More Than Just The Stokes Is absolutely the best tennis insructional book I have ever read.It is not a fancy book in terms of glossy and impressive pictures but the "meat and potatoes" of tennis instruction is there in SPADES!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
I started playing tennis 10 years ago after a lifetime of playing "other" sports, including competing at the collegiate level in football and wrestling.I am currently a 4.5 NTRP level player.I have become addicted to tennis, probably as a result of the marked need for contrasting physical and mental perspectives which I find so challenging and (potentially) rewarding. This book addresses that contrast more vividly than any book on sports to which I have ever been exposed. The ongoing internal battle to control your emotions in tennis is, in my opinion, the most difficult struggle one encounters on the court.Beardsworth is the Zen master of tennis, as he helps all us warriors become more focused and masterful on the courts. This book is worth every penny for those who are interested in improving the satisfaction they get from the sport (and it will generate a lot more wins as well!).It is chock full of specific tips that I have been using again and again on the road to improvement.I highly recommend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for doubles players and doubles fans
"Doubles Tennis Tactics" is the most authoritative book written on this subject.Doubles requires specific shot selection, court positioning and movement patterns for each player: the server, server's partner, receiver, and receiver's partner.Louis Cayer, a distinguished coach, analyzes all that in depth. The chapter on playing styles analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the five major playing styles, and that alone is reason enough for tournament players to buy this book. But the timeless question is: how can teams maximize teamwork to accentuate their strengths and minimize their weaknesses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good collection of drills for all situations.
Overall, this is a very good collection of tennis drills.Tina Hoskins covers tennis drills for numerous situations including: singles, doubles, group and children drills, competitive games, and even backboard drills. That is how she reaches the staggering number of 245 tennis drills.Given that most players have specific needs and desire associated with tennis drills, you will probably find only a small percentage of these drills useful. And, that is perfectly OK. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have For Serious Tennis Players
This book covers the topic of health from a tennis perspective and could help thousands of tennis players from being injured who play the game every year. This book would also be an invaluable resource for anyone treating "tennis specific" injuries. I have been looking for a well-written book on this very subject for years.... this is it. ... The only problem readers will have is deciding which piece of professional advice NOT to highlight. By the time you're finished, your entire book may be streaked in bright yellow, like mine. 5-0 out of 5 stars A TOP TENNIS BOOK
This book takes a different approach to improving your tennis game but I think it's a good one.The author is straight-forward and doesn't hold anything back. While he does give detailed instruction on the actually playing of tennis and covers all aspects of play he highlights the ways to really improve your game by your positioning, attitude, thinking, etc.He goes beyond the typical "hit the ball this way" method present in many tennis books but breaks down tennis play into easy to understand logic. There is a lot of information in this book but nothing a persistent, and hard-working tennis players can't handle. You will benefit most by reading, then using that instruction on the court then reading some more and applying your new instruction the next time you play.Take it one step at a time and I think you'll benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tennis Bible
When I first started playing tennis about 4 yrs ago, I E-mailed my mother a list of tennis books and said, 'buy 1 of them for my birthday.' Mom is great so she bought all of them. I flipped through them all, but I read, studied, and re-read Peter Burwash's book. I am now reading it for the 4thtime and every time I get something new out of it. He discusses strokes, strategies, fitness and attitude. He does it all in a way that is easy tounderstand. I began taking private lessons last year and it was amazing howmany things I learned that I quickly recalled from this book.Read more
