4-0 out of 5 stars Plane truth
This book gives you a clear understanding of two different methods of swinging a club. Decide on one or the other and stick with the drills appropriate to that particular swing plane and you will see a definite improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best instruction book for all golfers
This is the book that will answer the question of why you struggle with your golf swing and what to do about it.Discover what kind of swing, one plane or two plane, best fits your strength, flexibility, and timing then follow the proper fundamentals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is an excellent book. Like many of the reviewers, I have been frustrated over the years by the contradictory recommendations of the various teachers, teaching methods and authors. Nicklaus and Hogan say keep the ball in the same position off your left instep for all clubs. Harvey Penick, Tommy Armour (and Jim Hardy) say move it back as you go from driver to the short irons. Byron Nelson and Harvey Penick say you should stand as close to the ball as possible. A recent instructor told me to stand further away and lean over more. What's going on? Now I know. Different types of swings have different requirements. I quickly realized that I had been wandering back and forth between the two types of swings, sometimes hitting good shots and having a good round, sometimes even a good week, but soon losing it. Jim Hardy gives advice that is specific to the two types of swing. My only complaint is that there is not enough information to determine what type of swing would work best for me, but I was so impressed by the book that I bought the tapes. He must have realized that this was a weakness of the book. In the first tape, Hardy has Tom Pernice, Jr. demonstrate the amount of shoulder turn necessary for the one plane swing: the left shoulder has to be able to turn right under the chin, the right shoulder pointing up at the sky. I'm afraid that I'm just not this limber (I could never do yoga with my friends who are into it). So my decision seems to be made. This didn't surprise me too much, because in the past couple of weeks, I've been trying both types of swing, and while I never slice with the one plane and I've hit some great shots, I don't seem to hit it quite as far (and I've hit a few vicious hooks with it). The two plane swing it will have to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise little must-have book
If you are lucky enough to have a copy of "How to Perfect Your Golf Swing" by Jimmy Ballard and this wonderful little Effortless Golf Swing book by Michael McTeigue, just combine the instruction of both books to have a golf swing that gets results on the course.Do yourself and your golf game a favor and buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Golf Instruction Book
This book is beautifully constructed, concise, gracefully written, and should be of immense help to most golfers. If you've read Ernest Jones, Percy Boomer, or Jimmy Ballard (for example) and enjoyed the insights but found it difficult to transfer the written word to your swing, try "The Keys ...": You will read a book that may finally lead you to improve your game.My swing improved markedly after I came to understand author McTeigue's "lighthouse turn" (Lesson Two: Momentum).

5-0 out of 5 stars Gem in The Rough
I became a golf nut four years ago and I have bought every golf "training aid" and how-to book I have come across.I have closets filled with training vests, videos, and swing trainers. Then I found this book, it shaved ten points off my score, and has been my only coach for six months now.It has given me a frame-work to let me know what I am doing wrong and how to fix it.Until I "go pro" this is all I'll need. It is really a remarkable book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book cut 13 strokes off my first round.Really.
I know that sounds like ridiculous hype, but it's true.

Excellent points on how to adapt your thinking to play the most chlllenging game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a mental game book for low handicappers!
I play golf 4 times a week and am a scratch golfer, and was struggling with my game for about 6 months. I am telling you this book turned things around for me immediately! I like Rotella's stuff, but Dr. Valiante really gets it! While there are many golf psychology books out there - and I've read them all - none of them address issues for the advanced golfer with a low handicap. You can tell Dr. Valiante works with Tour Pros because he talks about things that are unique to the advanced player and low handicapper. The other books talk in general about the mind, but miss the unique things low handicappers deal with. For example, Dr. Valiante's description of Mastery/Ego golfers fit me to a tee, and since I've switched mindsets to mastery golf I am much, much more comfortable. If you are an advanced player, and struggling, I (like Justin Leonard and David Toms - both who endorse this book) strongly recommend you buy this book! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Ben Hogan's premise in this 1957 classic is driven home in bold letters: "THE AVERAGE GOLFER IS ENTIRELY CAPABLE OF BUILDING A REPEATING SWING AND BREAKING 80." Religions are founded on less, and Hogan's detailed analyses and illustrated demonstrations of grip, stance, posture, and the two basic components of the swing make up a sacred book. Though its very simplicity seems dated, this is the tome of technique that should serve as the foundation of every golf library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful to the beginner
For someone new to the game, this book is fantastic.Very few instructional volumes will successfully tell you how a particular technique -feels-.The examples start with the grip, in which the illustrations show you (and the text accurately describes) precisely what it is that you're searching for in terms of hand contact with the club.Pictures are helpful, but they can't convey the less tangible feelings of swinging or holding the club properly. It's not a substitute for lessons by any means, but it is a good (and short) way to get yourself planted on the right track towards hitting the ball well consistently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Instructional Book
This book can be very valuable to many golfers.I played for a few years in my late teens and early 20's mostly on par 3 courses.I stopped for a few years, but found myself wanting to jump back into the game.Playing on the par 3s it seemed as if I could hit my irons, but not my woods.I struggled with shots all over the place.I couldn't find any consistency.I have only had the book a few days now but I am seeing a little improvement. The book is pretty technical but it is a great foundation for a high-handicapper.Helps you understand why your shots can be off, and how you can fix them. If you want to get a better understanding of your own golf swing... pick up this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ben Hogan's Five Lessons
Some of the practices in the book are a little dated but I found the book to be very helpful. There are some techniques in the book that actually stabalized my swing.I would recommend the book for a beginning golfer as it's an easy approach to get started with sound basics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular!
Actually, I am not a golfer. But I purchased this book as a Christmas present for my aunt and uncle who are recreational golfers. And spectacular is the word they both used to describe it.The photographs are beautiful and there is a short description of each place that is photographed. My aunt particularly liked that the descriptions were short. She said it was just enough information about each place. And now, maybe, they are planning to visit some of these places and play a round...

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Go Wrong
This book was recommended as a Father's Day gift in a magazine and being that my Dad LOVES golf, I thought it was a sure thing. It ended up being way more than that. The book is beautiful!Don't tell anyone but it is way underpriced. It looks like a $50 coffee table book.My mom thought I had paid $80 to $100 for it.My Dad loves it so much that he displayed it on top of tv in the living room. He was giddy to find many courses in the book that he had played. The only downside I could see was that my Dad may find numerous golf courses around the world that he now feels he has to go and play. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
This isn't the perfect coffee-table-travel-reference book for golf in Scotland and Ireland, but then Tiger Woods isn't the perfect golfer either. If you've golfed in Scotland and Ireland, if you're planning to play in Scotland and Ireland, or if you're only dreaming of playing in Scotland and Ireland, this is absolutely one book that you must have. It's a steal at Amazon's $37.80.You may recognize some of the text, paraphrased a bit, from Finegan's 1996 "Blasted Heaths and Blessed Greens" [Scotland], and "Emerald Fairways and Foam-Flecked Seas" [Ireland], but this large format book is in no way a duplicate. What can I say?The golf course photography by Laurence Lambrecht is spectacular.Finegan's prose sparkles as ever.Any negatives?Sometimes, I think, Finegan goes a little over the top, maybe even a lot over the top.But who cares? ... Emerald Gems is a terrific compilation of golf landscape photographs in a large coffee table type of format (11x12?).Many if not all of the very best courses of Ireland are reviewed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible photos.
This book has incredible beautiful photographs of ALL of the great courses in Ireland and a wonderful written talk about each course. The book is big. It will have to go on the coffee table and not in the bookcase, but it is truly beautiful. Very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emerald Gems
In "Emerald Gems", Larry Lambrecht has been able to capture the feel and distinct nuances of the Irish links. The stunning photographs and accompanying stories provide the reader with an incredible sense of how golf was and is meant to be played and enjoyed. David Owen said, "The thing I like best about golf is the sense of infinite possibility..." Emerald Gems presents a real glimpse at that possibility and is a must read for those fortunate to have visited and played, and those who dream of doing so.

    Editorial Review

One of golf guru Jim Flick's mantras is that golf is 90 percent mental, and the other 10 percent is mental, too. Dr. Bob Rotella, a noted sports psychologist and performance consultant, roots around the golfer's mind to expose--and analyze--the doubts, the fears, and the frustrations that haunt anyone who's ever picked up a club and swung it. Through anecdote and aphorism he suggests how these mental and emotional hazards can be played through, and, regardless of skill level, how teeing off with a more positive and confident outlook will translate into better performance. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Great disappointment

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Golf Instructional Books You'll Ever Read
I don't think that it's a coincidence that I shot my best score ever after reading this book.Rotella speaks frankly about going through your preshot routine, choosing your target and trusting your swing.Golfers would be far better offpracticing the items mentioned above as opposed to thinking of complicated swing thoughts prior to hitting the ball. This is one golf instructional book that I will refer back to again & again. An outstanding read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, practical information
Bob's book is probably the single best "self-help" that I have ever read. His principles for improving your golf game don't stop there, they translate into the business world too.I have begun the process of strengthening my mind in order to improve my scores and it is working. It is not a quick fix but a process that takes time.I plan to read the book again in another month to refesh my memory. If you hit great shots on the range but can't take it to the course then you need to read and apply this book to your game. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Waist Deep
I can see why fans of John Daly would love this book - he portrays himself as the good ol' boy that many golf fans know and adore. But the BS here is waist-deep. The book actually made me sad - there is absolutely nothing to admire about this guy. He has squandered his talent and his money. He tries to portray himself as a champion, but anyone who follows the Tour knows he is the biggest quitter of all time. Whenever he is playing poorly or is out of contention, he throws in the towel - he has probably shot more final rounds in the 80's than any Tour player in history. Bottom line - if you're already a Daly fan, you'll probably love this book. But if you read it wanting to find out more about him, it will reveal him as one gigantic, pathetic waste of talent.

4-0 out of 5 stars A True Character
Though not particuarly well written, this autobiography is nonetheless engaging and entertaining. Many of Daly's personal faults are already well known, so there is not too much in this book anyone will find shocking.Despite what another reviewer wrote, I never felt that Daly was making excuses for his behavior, giving his side of the story and providing more context to the myriad of situations he has created and found himself in over the years. He is by and large unapologetic, which in a way is refreshing. He seems mostly at peace with who he is and his take me or leave me attitude is sad in some respects. His ongoing gambling problem, poor diet, poor romantic choices, binge drinking, etc have kept him from regaining his position as a great golf player. If you like Daly buy the book.He is a definite character and overall a likable one who seems to generally appreciate his fans and those less fortunate than himself.

4-0 out of 5 stars putting it all out there
I enjoyed reading this book. You feel for John. He's a good guy. Some of his unwanted drama is self-inflicted and some not. I can't imagine anyone to be as good as he is with all the distractions. Bottom line, he lives large and doesn't just amble through life. ... Read more

When I worked as the golf professional on Holland America's ms Westerdam, I told our guests that I saw the game of golf as four-dimensional: attitude, set-up, swing and course management. And I don't care if you are a tour player or a beginner, the very first thing that you take out of your bag had better be a good attitude, or you lose.

Tempo is key to balance, good mechanics, and consistency.By maintaining good tempo, the player keeps his/her body moving positively, avoiding alterations to the swing that come with lingering through it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tracy
The best money you could ever spend is on this book. If you have good fundamentals this book will make you a better golfer in a very short time. I've been playing golf for about 15 years and had experienced the same tendencies. But once I started to practice with the techniques detailed in this book I hit the ball correctly on a consistent basis. Solid straight shots were the norm. The past few times I was at the range I got the thumbs up from my fellow golfers hitting next to me. Unbelievable simple concept results in wonderful gains on the course.

5-0 out of 5 stars The key to the puzzle... it works!
I go to the Target World Challenge each December and would always play much better for a few days or weeks after the event, knowing that what I picked up from watching the big guys up close was a sense of their swing tempo. But that image would fade away over time and I would lose a clear picture of what the tempo was. I recently dropped my index from 10.5 to 6.4, doing so primarily through improving my swing rhythm or tempo. When my tempo was good I hit better shots and the resulting confidence spilled over into every aspect of my game, but I was unable to quantify what the good tempo was. So when I lost it, I had a hard time recapturing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Specific and exacting look at one thing
Superb art-to-photograhic portrayal style is a real eye-opener. Truly takes the words "visual technique" and give them meaning. In addition to almost literally placing your hands on the club, the author's accompanying narrative talks you (and your brain) through the "why's and what-fors" which are so important to installing a dependable, repeatable swing. I also liked the approach of crafting a grip that is right for the individual, as opposed to many "sermon on the mount" techniques you see so often on this subject. Even the non-golfers in the art department are impressed and they aren't impressed with anything! For the price it's an excellent read and permanent addition to the library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What the Golf Gods Ordered!
Having read a gazillion books on golf with minimal success and maximum frustration therefrom, I found this approach both positive and simple to implement. After applying several of the changes suggested here, I broke the 100 barrier for the first time, with a rollicking 92! I attribute it either to this book or the benevolent whims of the golf gods!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This one I will keep
I am not one to write reviews; however, this book is the exception.Without a doubt it is the best and easiest book to understand all the aspects of the golf swing. The material was presented in a manner that I could actually "see" in my minds eye what I needed to do to correct my mistakes. My comfort level with the game, ability to correct mistakes as the creep back have all improved during the last month since reading this book. This one I will read the start of every season, and would highly recommend this anyone who would like to improve their golf swing from the ground up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an easy-to-learn and effective approach to low-pressure putting!
Having close to two years of playing experience as a beginning golfer, and realizing that close to 40% of the score of in golf is putting (about 50% for me before this book), I was always looking for a good book on putting.'The Art of Putting' is that book.Stan uses a very simple to learn approach that has for me effectively removed a major portion of the pressure I always felt over every putt. Now I can focus more of my energy to reading the green, determining the speed of the putt and then going through my pre-shot routine. The bottom line: three-putts are one or two a round, down from four to seven a round.Par-savers and birdies are definite possibilities now. As an added bonus, I find that on the majority of long putts greater than 10 feet, I can more frequently putt to 1-2 feet from the pin for an easy second putt. Thanks, Stan, for making golf easier to play and, of course, a 'hole' lot more enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Eye-Opening, Revolutionary
This book improved my golf game overnight. Contrary to the contrived Dave Pelz system in which the eye line rests directly over the target line, the shoulders rock up and down, and the putterhead moves straight back and through, Stan Utley advocates a more natural stroke: the eye line is inside the target line, the putterhead moves in an arc, and the shoulders turn around the spine. In short, it is a mini version of the full golf swing. What amazed me was how little the grip end of the putter moves in relation to the putterhead. The book's pictures of the proper grip, stance, alignment and stroke are taken from multiple angles, making Utley's technique easily visualized and grasped. Some may criticize the thinness of the book (barely 100 pages), but that will leave you more time to practice a putting method that really works.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book will help your putting....
I recently purchased this book as way to help improve my dreadful putting.I found this book was easy to follow and the drils it suggested do work esp the coin one.The price is a little step for a short book, but it is a hardcover. But bottom line is this will help sink more putts. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars O.K. Little Book
Notice that the title is not "The Fifty Greatest Golf Courses."My title would be, "Fifty Interesting Places to Play Golf."Whether it's my title or the real title, the emphasis is on "places to play," or "destinations," not golf courses per se.More than fifty golf courses are covered.Which is not to say that the book does not include a lot of great golf courses. The format is mini-coffee table, with several pages of text for each destination and one small picture for most of the destinations. The quality of the printing, photo reproduction and binding in my copy is excellent. The text for each destination has been volunteered by a different prominent golf person. For example, Nick Faldo writes about the Royal Melborne Golf Club (West Course) in the Australian state of Victoria.Alice Dye about the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course (see a connection there?).On the plus side are the quality of the color photos and the introduction (to me) of golf courses in some far away places (e.g., Bhutan, Morocco, India, places, however, I'll never get to).On the minus side, I don't have a prayer of playing some of the U.S. courses, even after I die (e.g., Pine Valley, Sand Hills, National Golf Links of America), which, honestly, the author points out. Finally, why not at least one photo for each destination? From the two page description of the Pacific Grove muni: "[T]he back nine . . . takes you right out to the water and combines incredible views of the Pacific and Monterey Bay with windswept bluffs reminiscent of some of the great courses of Scotland and Ireland."Why no photo of this course? From the two page description of the Torekov Golf Club in Sweden (my ancestral home): ". . .a links-oriented course. . . You can view the sea from all eighteen holes. In the summer, wildflowers are blooming everywhere . . . ."I want a photo, darn it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures, really nice gift.
Being a golfer, I got this as a gift from one of my relatives.I must say the pictures are outstanding. This book makes me want to travel more to other countries to experience the pleasure of these courses. This book will always have a permanent place in my library. For excellent golf instruction that helped me to drastically reduce my handicap, I recommend,
5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift item for the golfer on your list.
This really is an attractive volume, and it constitutes a sort of fantasy list of unique golf courses. The author has gone out of his way to avoid many of the "obvious" big name courses that golfers know from televised tournaments. This gives the book an added interest factor, as one can read about exotic courses in such out-of-the-way locales as Morocco and Oregon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heaven On Earth
This book is fantastic, and the only thing better than reading it was to experience Bandon Dunes in person a year ago!We were there just before Bandon Trails opened so we only got to play Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes.I've played Whistling Straits and have been to Pebble Beach. They're great but nothing compares to the pure golf experience at Bandon.Goodwin's fascinating story of how Bandon came to be is an incredible tribute to the vision and perseverence of Mike Keiser in building his dream. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to keep your workout goal oriented and interesting
This book is great!I have always had a problem falling into a workout rut, and this book has designed a fun golf workout that changes every two weeks. I would recommend this book or any book in this series to someone who is training for a specific sport. The book is simple to read and you can download blank workout sheets from their website so you can track your progress. The book also has pictures explaining each exercise that is well organized by muscle group.Golf season has not started yet but I am looking forward to getting out there and crushing some great shots.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition is Way Better
I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost Balls and Other Bad Lies
WONDERFUL book for golfers... or as a gift to golfers. Photos are crisp and lovely, lies are unimaginable and even inconceivable! Makes those of us who do NOT play golf wonder why others do, and should make golfers offer prayers of thanks that they have never, never had shots to play like these...
5-0 out of 5 stars Lost Balls- a great photgraphic journey
Charles Lindsay has captured the true soul of golf with this photographic journey through some of the most interesting places in the world. This book is perfect for the person who truely loves and understands the game of golf. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best "how-to" book I've read on achievement
This is a really great book on the building blocks and requirements for attaining fulfillingachievement.I think one of the best parts of this book for me was the author's classification of achievement as an art. This softened the definition of achievement for me and liberated the concept from my perception as a cold,money-producing necessity to something beautiful, fulfilling, exciting and worthy of creation.Everyone is different, of course, and how we do things is always different from how others do things, even when we seemingly are doing the same thing. We all put our personalities into everything we do.That combined with our ability to choose how we use our unique, God-given abilities to create achievement art that will help both ourselves and others, makes fulfilling achievement very worth creating.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Achievement
