3-0 out of 5 stars HERO WORSHIP OR GOLF INSTRUCTION?
This one is one with which you have to read between the lines. Think like Tiger?Sure. Why not? Because there is to much more to the game than thinking through the game.Nicklaus, Watson, Palmer--even Tiger--have all spoken of the intuitive aspects of the game and how too much thinking can be the death of your next round.3-0 out of 5 stars "By age four, nothing bothered him."
In his analysis of Tiger Woods's mental game, Andrisani points out the methods by which Tiger manages to keep focused on his game and block out distractions and negative thoughts.Visually programmed by his father so that his mental image of the perfect golf swing became part of his psyche as an infant, he doesn't have to think about what he's doing right or wrong with his own swing.Introduced to Buddhism by his mother when he was a small child, he knows how to meditate and relax.Taught by coaches how to focus on where he wants his shots to go, rather than what's going on with his swing or his score, he knows how to get into "the zone."And he may, according to Andrisani, employ a post-hypnotic code (through very slow eye-blinks) to keep himself from being distracted.3-0 out of 5 stars Well...maybe.
Okay, let's think about this one.Is Tiger Woods the golfing machine that John Andrisani wants us to believe he is?Or is he human, at the pinnacle of his game and cruising?Golf is all about streaks.Think about Johnny Miller. At the top of his game everyone was saying that HE was the next Nicklaus. Then all of a sudden it was as though he had been abducted by aliens.Go, Tiger, go! But I won't be the least bit surprised when the streak ends and Tiger ends up stumping Mizuno or Maxfli or Golfsmith instead of Nike.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What I have been waiting for!
People in my industry (golf) finally have a "Bible" to refer to when it comes to professional irrigation systems.Laid out in a basic, yet thorough format this book has it all, from good photos to useful charts and glossary.Anyone even considering installing a new system should have this book at their side.I wish I had it when our system was designed and "thrown in the ground" by a purported expert. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Encyclopedia of Golf Techniques
This is a very informative book and excellently presented to all aspects of the golf game. Recommend for all classes of golfers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures and concise explanations
Tiger's book had lots of nice pictures, this book has more, just that they are not Tiger.Despite that, I find this book to contain a wealth of useful information for golfers ranging from beginning to advanced levels.Lots of valuable playing experience regarding chipping, putting, trouble shots, advanced fade/draw/slice/hook techniques have been condensed into this easy to read volume. You can find almost every conceivable golf shot described in this book.Highly recommended. ... Editorial Review

Here's the bad news: "Golf," suggests the great Bobby Jones, the largest shadow ever cast on a fairway, "is the one game which becomes more and more difficult the longer one plays it." Here's the good news: If his classic instructional can't change the diagnosis, it may at least ease the pain. Written by the master himself--no ghost ever stepped between Jones and his ball--as a series of twice-weekly newspaper columns between 1927 and 1935, the collection of tips and ideas moves from the simple ("Nobody ever swung a golf club too slowly") to the complex ("The art of appraising slope and speed--that is, of reading a green, can be derived only from experience"), the physical to the mental, the obvious to the arcane, and is penned with an elegance as smooth and fluid as Jones' liquid swing. Some of it, especially to golf's newcomers, will seem out of date--the game has changed much through the years--but that's OK; this is a book to savor as much as learn from. It's biggest drawback is its lack of illustrations, but the recent uncovering of a cache of unpublished photographs and tips--available in Jones' Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bobby Jones Has Something to Say...
I never saw Bobby Jones stirke a golf ball in person. I never saw him play a full game on 16 mm film for that matter.I can only go by his unmatched amateur record and very short old grainy 16-millimeter film stock of how graceful his swing was...very controlled, impeccable balance/ coordination, unbelievable tempo and rhythm. Pure ballstriking. Pure golf.
5-0 out of 5 stars what an amazing book
bobby jones teaches golf in a clear and consise way. It's amazing how everything still holds true after 40 years!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Golf Books Ever Written
Where to start? Maybe its Jones' Harvard-educated background combined with his Southern gentleman quality that melds into a style of writing that is unmatched in over 100 years of writings in golf instruction. His conveyance of somewhat technical aspects of the game in an economy of words is astounding, and after reading the book probably 4 times now, I see new instances of incredible use of language with each reading. Here is an example of Jones' use of language - this from the first chapter: "The great fault in the average golfer's conception of his stroke is that he considers the shaft of the club a means of transmitting actual physical force to the ball, whereas it is in reality merely the means of imparting velocity to the clubhead... I like to think of a golf club as a weight attached to my hands by an imponderable medium, to which a string is a close approximation, and I like to feel that I am throwing it at the ball with much the same motion I should use in cracking a whip." Economy of words and language that it so beautiful to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comfortable Conversation with Golfing Great
Nelson truly is a golfing gem, one that gets somewhat lost in all the current player hype. But this is likely due to media hype, not the players; they are humble around the like of Lord Byron, and most if not all big names play the King's, the Bear's and the Nelson's tournaments.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth your time
This is simply a straightforward account of Nelson's life by The Man himself. It's primary focus is his poor-as-dirt childhood and rise to stardom on the PGA Tour, culminating in The Streak of eleven straight wins in 1945 (he retired the next year). His television work is also covered, as is the death of his wife of 50 years and subsequent remarriage, but the primary focus is on his rise to stardom and retirement to ranching. It turns out that he doesn't have hemophilia as I'd always heard, nor did he retire because his "nervous stomach" couldn't take the stress of competition. The big virtue of the book is that it's written in a homey style that makes you feel as though Nelson is right there speaking to you in his Texas twang. It was written with assistance from his second wife, and it reads as though she must have been transcribing tapes. There is very little discussion of swing theory and no tips to help your game, but it's fascinating if you have an interest in what it took to make a living in professional golf in the 1930s and 1940s.It should be required reading for today's pampered pros who make more for one fifth-place finish than Nelson made in his entire career as one of the all-time greats. He comes across as an extremely decent, religious man that you would've liked to have known. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An honest, compelling, literary accomplishmentfor more than just Hogan fans
As both an avid golfer, and Ben Hogan admirer, I was more than satisfied with this book. Once i turned the first page I couldn't put it down. The information shared on the life of who I consider to be the greates golfer ever is unparalleled. Although this will instantly become a cherished part of any Ben Hogan fan's book collection, anyone who enjoys American history, sports history, sports in general, and golf in particular, as well as those who like true stories of sucess against all odds, will enjoy this book. It's a well-written portrait capturing all the good and bad of Ben Hogan and his life, and there was plenty of both. Anyone who thinks they know anything about Ben Hogan the man owes it to themselves to read this book. As Arnold Palmer himself said of the book: "I thought I knew Ben Hogan pretty well, until this book came along...".If you were interested enough in this book to read the reviews, you should buy it. You will not regret doing so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I would greatly recommend this book. It is a very comprehensive study into the life of a true legend and is also a very incisive insight into America during the thirties and forties. In the course of reading about such an outstanding career the name Tiger Woods inevitably enters one's thoughts. Just how would Hogan have compared to Woods during the prime of his career. Woods continues his gallop into history but Hogan's name will always be the one who was responsible for taking golf out of the country clubs and into the municipal courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth be known
An outstanding insight to the life and times of Mr. Hogan. So much was presented that never came to the public eye.And even though a discredit was given by one reviewer in his May 9, 2005 review, based on the fact that 10 birdies in an US Open on a par 74 course was not possible, this individual did not do his homework. The US Open was played on a par 74 course in Savannah, Georgia in the early 1930s.A great book, a wonderful revelation, a must read for those interested in golf history. ... Playing golf isn't hard; it's playing it well when you're not on your game that's difficult, and few have ever mastered that skill better than former Masters, U.S. Open, and PGA champion Raymond Floyd. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone wanting to improve
As posted previously, this book isn't about swing mechanics, but about playing smarter golf and being realistic about your game. I think this book would be extremely beneficial to the beginning golfer and would make a great gift. It's a quick read and well written. I try to read it a couple of times a year to remind myself to play within my abilities and keep a good attitude.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Scoring and Playing with Confidence
I am a low handicap golfer who grinds to shoot in the low 70's.Typically, I hit 7-8 greens in regulation. After reading Floyd's book, I played a round and hit 14 greens in regulation. The next round I played in a vicious wind and shot 77.Better than scoring low, these were the two most comfortable rounds I've ever played.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
Floyd is still one of the best chippers and shot gamers in golf. The PGA pros when interviewed say the same thing. He has a lot to share and much of it is "tough love" to us amateurs--don't over-club, be realistic with your average distance not your best distance etc. He is a very clever golf course manager and it shows in his advice. His description of his early days when he was a risk-taker and losing, while trying to be like Arnie, was very interesting. Once he decided to manage his risks around the course and be himself he became a big winner. This would certainly not be the first book for a beginner (you first need to learn to swing) but this should be a fairly early addition if you want to score well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Golf Book I Have Ever Read
I have read hundreds of instruction books on golf. This one would rate number 1 on my list. It is easy to understand and the instructions really work. The drills really make a different.I improved to a 5 handicap from about a 10 in a couple of months. This is a book I read in every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend
At first I was disappointed because the title is misleading.Dunigan doesn't identify a secret to the golf swing. As I read through the book, however, I forgave him and chalked up the title to plain old American marketing.Dunigan does present several key moves that are extremely helpful, perhaps even revelational, and does an admirable job of explaining their roles. His analysis and explanation of the 2 planes is outstanding. He also identifies those fundamentals that are important and provides excellent drills for the moves he advocates. As useful, perhaps even more useful, than anything I've read on golf.Money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Sing Book Ever Written
Dunigan breaks down the swing and explains it correctly as no one has done before. He picks up where Ben Hogan's 5 Fundamentals left off. His explanation of the 2 planes on the backswing and downswing is brilliant and should be standard teaching in all golf schools ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best
I'm a single digit handicap golfer who loves to study the golf swing. Of all of the books out there, this one is simply the best. Learning to "feel" your way to a proficient golf swing is right on the mark because if you can feel your swing, you can trust it and play with confidence. The whole body is involved with swinging the golf club, but the hands, arms and feet are the gateway for moving beyond analysis and finally feeling your own swing. Toski and Love communicate the fundamentals in such a straight-forward, easy to understand format that you may just sell or junk all of your other golf books.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I did not like this book. It does not explain the golf swing sufficiently for the user to perform the swing correctly. There are certain aspects that I believe leave the reader unclear. For example, the book says that you need to imagine the inside path to the ball in the downswing as a slide going down to the ball. It does not say how the reader should actually perform this move.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Golf Instructional Book!
A great golf instructional book! I think it would be especially helpful to the beginner. The book was written in a very logical sequence and in the order of importance to help reader understand the entire golf swing. Drills in each chapter were simple to perform and effective. ... Read more

There's an old golf saying that you drive for show and putt for dough. Despite recent woes with the mallet, Tom Watson has been a master on and around the carpet throughout his esteemed career. In easy, conversational style, he fills this essential instructional volume with the basic techniques for pitching, putting, chipping, and sand play, all marvelously illustrated by Anthony Ravielli, then tackles the more challenging variations like high lobs, handling hardpan, and difficult lies. Watson also offers plenty of good advice for thinking about the short game and includes a series of practical drills to help golfers work at improving it. ... Read more

Tom Watson was the master of consistency and an absolute magician 100 yards in.Actually he would do well to re-read this tome, especially the putting section. It serves up the solution to his woes on the green.Hint - maintaining the wrist angle. However, even if he ignores his own advise, the rest of us can benefit from this terrific book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Golf book.
I am glad I learned of this book...it allowed to eliminate the multitude of swing thoughts etc. which were leading to 'paralysis by analysis'. If this sounds like you, the book may be helpful. The swing proposed by Knudson, is rather simple, as explained by other reviewers; basically, hands remain passive while weight transfer and balance drive everything. The swing itself is now a lot more enjoyable for me. There is some repetition in the book, and reading about Knudson's time on tour is rather boring. The 150 page book could be compressed in less than half that; regardless, worth going through the whole thing to change your swing.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book, really great
I read a lot of the reviews here before buying the book, and it was good to see what people thought of it from different angles.Personally I think it's a great book! As soon as I started reading it I knew it was right for me.George Knudson tells of his youth and his early problems, and it was exactly what I am experiencing and exactly what I need to fix.I think it depends on the person... if you've got a swing that isn't relaxed, that feels like you're putting far too much into it, get this book! I had a decent driving distance already, but I was putting far too much into it and it was inconsistent. The stuff in this book helps.I also read that people complain that he repeats things, but I find this as an advantage.I have read other books that say things once, and unless I write them down I forget them about a day later.I think the repetition (as slight as it is) really drills in the information.

5-0 out of 5 stars She's Right - It Could Happen to You
This is an honest, funny, and sweet memoir of pregnancy and the first year as a parent. Brockenbrough takes us along on her journey as she lives the ups and downs of life as a new parent. It's sometimes funny, sometimes endearing, but always entertaining. Brockenbrough is not as outrageous as Jenny McCarthy, which is a good thing, because her book will appeal to everyone. It could be you in this book, for all intents and purposes, and reading someone else's first experience with parenthood is sure to arm a new mom with insights and hope.
1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely without humor or insight and not well written
This book is NOT funny. It just isn't. Using the word "barf" a million times in a nonpun- not amusing. In fact the only time I laughed during the book was from a Rita Rudner quote. Rita Rudner- funny. The writing style is overly chatty dear diary. Annoying. I'm not interested in her dull life, only her pregnancy. I could get more insight talking to a random pregnant woman. It isn't even sweetly funny. I would love a good pregnancy book, I'm sick of the medical guides. But this isn't it. I welcome recommendations. PAss on this one. I fell asleep to it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very cute.
You'll enjoy this book. It's like talking with a chatty woman about parenthood, pregnancy, etc. The segments on many topics make it easy to read quickly. Colorful and funny photos with comic-like humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Winter Dreams of Summer Drives and Approaches
This book is one of the most complete looks at top golf holes around the world that most golfers can hope to have. Since most of us cannot be scratch golfers, play on the pro tour, or get access to the world's most exclusive clubs, one of the top joys of being a golfer is playing on any great hole. The next best thing is to imagine or to remember playing such a hole. For 100 of 500 top holes, this book will help provide this indirect enjoyment by putting you visually on either the tee and the green of many outstanding holes with a decent-sized color photograph. For 18 of 500 top holes, you are able to do both.5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book
This book is very informative. The courses mentioned are the world's best. The author writes with real affection. Each chapter is well researched. I highly reccommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars What's new
Went through the book in a couple of minute and didn't learn anything new or helpful. Book slims over different shots and setups but nothing that you can analyze and get much guideness. Would recommend a different way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Little Insight -- Mostly Anecdotes about Pro Golfers
I got this book on Feb 9 2005.Finished reading it on Feb 11, 2005.
5-0 out of 5 stars Will help on the mental side of to shoot low scores
This book helped me to have the proper mental outlook on how to shoot low scores.I started to release the possiblity in myself on how to play better golf and not listen to any negative thoughts.I also really loved---The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer or Better by Patrick Leonardi, isbn is 1933023090.Leonardi's book showed me great technique that were non-conforming to what else is taught on the market. It's very easy to follow and shows results instantly (Highly recommended.)For example, before using The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer or Better, I never hit more than 5 greens in regulation in one round. After reading this book and applying its techniques to my swing, I now have can hit at least 9 greens in regulation on average.Patrick Cohn's book helped me to mentally transform my mind from amateur thinking to professional thinking on the golf course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best
I have hacked around the course for years, took lessons, bought new equipment, read the books by Harvey Penick and others, all to no avail. I saw an article about this book, so I ordered it ... I studied the information in it, and did my best to apply the techniques and remedys outlined in it. Here is the result- on Friday at my course I shot 105. After reading this book, I went back on Saturday and shot 89! My advice to all is to buy this book, study it, and then get ready to play the best golf of your life! ... Read more
