5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful walk through Baja's geologic past.
This book is like a nice walk with a good friend who has a talent for telling great stories. You go along for the pleasantness of the walk, and find yourself transported right into the middle of the story. Here you are, some forty feet above the current level of the sea, standing on a shelf of land that contains the perfectly preserved remains of a coral reef.In another area, some 260 feet above sea level you come across a fossilized seabed jammed with the shells of thousands of oysters.Ancient shark teeth litter the ground on top of a 130-foot high mesa.Your friend walks on a few yards and, with infectious enthusiasm, reads the next chapter of the story to you.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Get topo maps instead
This book is more of a travelogue than a guidebook. I was expecting maps, trail lengths, phone numbers for hostels: the kind of things you get in a Lonely Planet or Falcon Books guide. Fayhee's book is a series of stories about his trips to Copper Canyon with a repetitious exhortation to "get a guide!" for most of the hikes he lists. If I wanted a guide I wouldn't have bought a guidebook. For anyone comfortable with some degree of self-reliance, go for topo maps and local contacts instead of this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars entertaining but doubtfully useful as a trail guide
If you want to read interesting and funny adventures about foot travel in Copper Canyon, this is a great book.Fayhee is a a good writer, quite funny in a Dave Barry kind of way--especially with his use of exaggeration. In that respect, it's one of the best travel guide books I've read.5-0 out of 5 stars Very Inciteful on Copper Canyon Adventures
Fayhee's book was incredibly valuable during our recent 6 day adventure to the copper canyon.I read through four books on the subject, and found this book to be the most insightful of all. Some of the specifics are alittle out of date since this place is changing so incredibly rapidly, butthe stories and anecdotes were very inciteful.Best if used in conjunctionwith a more recent Guidebook. The suggestions and advice were most helpfulin selecting the limited locations we could explore in our allotted time. Enjoyable to read and study in preparation, and the only book we took alongwith photocopied pages from other books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars RE: The Palenque Jungle Hike
I found Jim Conrad's book very informative & it inspired me to hike the jungle trail behind the Palenque ruins in Chiapas. The discription of first part of the hike was very accurate. However, once my husband & Ireached the second part of the hike, it became apparent that Mr. Conradnever actually finished the hike himself. The descriptions faded out &we ended up hiking at least 5 miles farther than the book describes. I justwanted to warn anyone else hiking the Palenque trail that hiking the fullcircle is much farther than the book indicates. When you get to the river& over the hanging bridge (well worth it), you might want to turnaround & head back the way you came, through the jungle & back tothe ruins. The rest of the way is a gravel farm road(estimated 5-7 miles)tothe road main road leading back to Palenque city.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is door to Mexico? Natural

4-0 out of 5 stars An essential guide, but beware of an error in this reprint
Harvey Butchart is of course the God of Grand Canyon hiking and this guide is essential for any serious backcountry canyon hiker. While hiking down to the river in Cottonwood Canyon, I was sent on a scary, exposure-filleddetour by this guide. On returning home, I compared it to my old editionsof the book and found that this reprint mistakenly drops an entire crucialline of text in the Cottonwood Canyon section, so beware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the Only Guide You'll Ever Need
Harvey Butchart is one of the greatest Grand Canyon hikers and his books are classics. But don't rely on them as your primary guide. They make great supplemental guides if you already have Annerino's Sierra Clubguide.5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete reference to the Grand Canyon I've found!
Butchart's book is the only reference to about half the routes talked about in the book!Having hiked several of the routes in the book, ive found the descriptions to give just enough information to get you going inthe right direction without taking away the adventure of it all by tellingyou every detail that you will experience.A must for Canyon hikers. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Too much and too little
I think this book tries to be too many things. It aims at giving backpackers all they need. All they need won't fit into 240 or so pages. Most of it covers the same ground as do other, better, guidebooks: bus connections, hotels, restaurants, background and history, sightseeing descriptions, etc. Also, note that the book was printed in 1997 so the details are hopelessly outdated anyway.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but worth the price
Although the book had valuable information on remote areas of Mexico the "narrative" approach to giving directions was a little dated in the age of widely available GPS.Distances are often expressed in terms oftime and landmarks are at times vague.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not to be Confused with a Through Hike
The California Coast offers some spectacular scenery and parts of it, mostly north of the San Francisco Bay, offer some spectacular hiking. But the southern end of the California Coastal Trail, the state's "millenium trail" as the authors of this book constantly remind us, is more imagination than reality.Private property, the Diablo nuclear power plant, environmental restrictions upon camping, and the lack of any actual trail tread for miles upon miles of the coast means that much of the hike is along roads with no real legal place to camp. The first thru hikers, or "Whole Hikers" in 1996 did their trek with continuous automobile support driving them to and from the "trailhead" and motels and campgrounds. This is cost prohibitive for the vast majority of hikers who might imagine that they can plan a through hike on this trail the way they might on the Pacific Crest Trail or shorter cousins like the Tahoe Rim Trail.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
I just came back from a trip to Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador and this book was a very good way to prepare myself to it before going. Its sugestions for equipment and what you really need to carry or not with you were great. But once I got there, some problems start to happen: like incorrect ormissing info about remote parts of Ecuador, cordillera Blanca in Peru orcordillera Real in Bolivia. It gave me the impression that they are reallyat the beggining of their explorations, but I am sure that the followingupdated editions are going to be really good, since they have some nicebackground information about the history, culture and tourist sights ofeach country. Although they are not 100% either, you can trust in Peru andBolivia: Backpacking and Trekking or Climbing and Hiking in Ecuador, bothfrom Bradt Books. But your best choice is really to buy the Lonely Planetguides for each of these countries, since they are the most reliable in themarket today. ... Read more
