5-0 out of 5 stars Walking in England? This is for you
Picture this. I have spent money and time in finding the right routes. Ihave just come in from a day walking in Snowdonia and I'm sitting down toeat in a YHA. The man next to me is from Romania. He has just arrived andis equipped with one book which he lets me read. In this book I find all ofthe best bits of my favourite walks. There is something for everybody andit is very informative. I would have saved loads of money and wasted hourson trips that were not really what I wanted - IF I HAD READ THIS BOOK. Buyit even if you are a resident of the UK and think you know it all already(like me!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely recommended for your walking trip in England!
This book provides information on numerous walks, both long and short distance, in England, complete with maps, daily distance recommendations, accommodation.A great core guide to help plan your excursion and takewith you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to hiking in all areas of Great Britain.
A good resource for both single and multi-day hikes in all areas of Great Britain.Text is divided into regional sub-sections, making it easyto match your reading to the areas you plan to visit.A fair number of the most popular or readily accessible hikes in each region are thoroughly described.A biblography at the end of each regional section recommends sources of more detailed information about walking in a given area.Detailed listing of "support services": food, lodging, transportation for each listed walk.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it promises
This is an excellent book that does exactly what it promises, gives you some pleasant walks around London interspersed with relaxing pub breaks.Be sure to order half pints, though, or you may have trouble walking back to your hotel.

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensible resource for touring London
Along with Rick Steves' London Guide, the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, & a London A To Z street guide, this book will always be on my "Must Bring" list for the Metrop. 15+ walking tours makes for plenty of exercise, whether walking, sightseeing, or my personal fave, performing pint curls. I looked all over London before finding it at Stanfords(a great travel bookshop) between Covent Garden & Charing Cross Rd., as this was not available on Amazon. Now it is, & your travels to London are the better for it. One tip: Mr. Bruning's tours all start at a given point(don't they all?). By using multimap.co.uk I did my own tours, by setting the tours from postcode to postcode, so after an afternoon at the British Museum, I was itinerized from there(actually, beginning at the Museum Tavern pub across the street) to Soho, to Picadilly. Unfortunately, my local is listed here, but that's the bad news. The good news is it gets the recognition it deserves, and no, I'm not going to tell you. Find your own, you'll be glad you did, and you'll be glad you got this great little book. You can check out Ted Bruning on FLN's Thirsty Traveler show, also. He starts their tour at the Market Porter in SE1. I highly recommend that pub, and this book. Cheers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars coast to coast path - a great guide!!
if you can afford only one book, this is the one to buy.we are getting ready to hike the coast 2 coast and, of the three we have purchased, this guide is the most helpful.it is full of detailed, practical info.maps are visually very clear, and written directions are specific.info on planning, budgeting, distance/time itineraries, what to take, getting to and from the coast 2 coast path - all are very useful.websites that are included are current and informative.henry stedman has done an excellent job of providing the info we need!!!five stars!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Avoid getting lost on the C to C
If you're planning to walk the Coast to Coast, you'll want to buy this book. I walked the C to C in June 2004, using both the Hannon guidebook and Stedman. What's great about Stedman is the detail on his hand-drawn maps at tricky points on the trail. He shows you cattle grids, stiles, old fence posts and other markers, including paths NOT to take, and I often found the detail kept me from heading off on the wrong track. You can't find that level of helpfulness on the traditional strip maps that cover the C to C.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the best
A lot of interesting and helpful information is packed into this small trail guide making it a must-have when walking Hadrian's Wall. The maps are clear and precise with commentary that allows the walker to interpret structures along the way. The small loop hikes included are an extra bonus and well worth taking. The text alerts the reader to small items of interest that might otherwise be missed along the footpath, like the Roman mile stone on the path to Vindolanda. Brief essays introduce the reader to a bit of context for the Wall. If you buy only one book, this should probably be it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well illustrated, well written - just like being there
This is a great travel book, a synthesis of fine writing, beautiful color pictures, and excellent Ordnance Survey maps. It pulls a region together and makes it feel like you are there.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide!!
I went to London earlier this year and bought the book because it was exactly the type of thing I wanted to do during my trip. The book was terrific!!We did several of the walking tours, and each was right on the mark.We decided to do the Jack the Ripper walk on our own instead of with a tour group. Each direction was precise. We were extremely impressed!!!This book is a great idea for those visiting London!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written and Very Atmospheric
I really enjoyed reading this book and following the routes. Richard Jones is a compelling storyteller and his eyes fordirection and detail is excellent. I purchased the book prior to my recent vacation in London and read it cover to cover on the plane over. The first route I followed was the Jack the Ripper Walk and I found it spinechilling. Whitechapel seems as eerie and crime-ridden now as it did back in 1888. I took Jones's suggestion and purchased the A-Z of jack the Ripper before setting out and so was well prepared with the additional information required. I found the Tower of London walk a superbly laid out route around the old fortress. It kept me well away from the crowds and in some of the towers I was totally alone (at least I hope I was.)The text captured perfectly the ambience of each section of the tower's towers.2-0 out of 5 stars Very well written, but lacks depth of the actual hauntings
I found this book to be extremely well written. Although I have not yet been to London, the directions and maps seem to be superb. In addition to the basic ghost "tour," the author also treats the reader to nice little stops along the tours -- like pubs and eateries. Estimated tour times are also given so one can plan their day.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Historic castles, spectacularviews & the Loch Ness monster
Scotland's newest long distance path, the 73 miles/117km long Great Glen Way, links Fort William on the west coast and Inverness on the east coast, and leads walkers through some of Scotland's finest scenery.Highlights include views of Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis and two days' walking above Loch Ness, internationally famous as the home of the Monster. The walking certainly isn't for tough mountain climbers - you'll follow canal tow paths, forest tracks and paths for most of the distance.Read more
