5-0 out of 5 stars Don't forget Umbria!
We used this book for a trip to Umbria with our children ages 9 and 12 this September and thought it was great, both for the walking and the eating. We have been to Tuscany several times and wanted to branch out to Umbria on this last trip, and can only say we wish we had done so sooner. We stayed in the lovely town of Norcia, and did the "san Eutizio" walk: an amazing adventure with children! Norcia was an easy place to be with kids, the hotel recommended in the book was extremely friendly, the town had such a safe feeling and enough of interest (particularly the gelato bar) to the kids to keep them busy. The walk - one of the longer ones in the book - was an ambitious one for kids, but gave them an exceptional feeling of accomplishment at the end, and they loved the beautiful abbey at San Eutizio, especially enjoyable on our visit because as we ate dinner at the tiny restaurant next door (the only building in the immediate environs) there was a wedding going on, which spilled into the outdoors. While my husband and I lingered over our "vino," the kids went inside the abbey and mingled with the wedding party stragglers, a few of whom - along with our kids of course - crawled through an ancient tunnel behind the altar, an action that is supposed to cure all ills.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a new edition of this classic!
I first discovered this book on a trip to Italy in 1999, and after my first walk I was hooked. The walk (Lamole Ring walk) took me to a place I never would have found on my own, and the experience of visiting this lovely off-the-beaten-track hamlet and its beautiful surrounding countryside on foot turned out to be the highlight of my vacation. The restaurant recommended (the only one in Lamole) was also one of the best I've ever eaten in, and was at the same time friendly and not terribly expensive.

3-0 out of 5 stars okay but not very in depth
This book covers so much territory so quickly, i didn't find it useful for the amalfi coast. there it only covered a few main walks in main towns instead of getting very deep. the Sunflower Landscape series is much more thorough but doesn't have hotel recommendations.

4-0 out of 5 stars All the details you'll ever need to walk in Italy

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountains of Tuscany , Best Available Guidebook
The level of detail in this guidebook is astonishing. I have walked and climbed this area for 23 years but still found new ideas. I can confirm the accuracy of the descriptions from my experience of many of the routes followed in whole or in part. In this area it is essential to use detailed maps to supplement the route description if only to find starting and finishing points. The maps recommended within this guide are not wholly adequate for the purpose, and maps of the series "Edizioni Multigraphic, 1:25 000" are really indispensable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Guidebook
I just returned from a trip to the Apuan Alps, where I put this book to the test, and it was quite useful. The hikes are very well described and are very accurate in terms of the terrain and the time and distance.I also agree with their rankings of the various hikes in terms of difficulty and the overall experience. However, this book should be used as a "starting point" coupled with detailed road maps and trail maps, as the directions to the trailheads (and on the trails themselves) can be a bit vague at points.Still, it was an excellent tool that made for a great hiking experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightfully Charming
This book, which I received as a present in anticipation of a trek to Italy, is fantastic. It is very interesting and well written with lots of good information.I agree with the above reviews; I especially love the menu recommendations for various spots and the guide to Italian behavoir. My one complaint is that it does not have much information for extended (multi-day) hikes, and while it has useful information on trains, the book as a whole is geared towards those traveling by car.All in all a delightful book, that is a fun read even if you aren't actually going hiking. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars For the discerning traveller...
This is a fine book that delves into a subject that is usually just a side bar in the more comprehensive travel guides. For the interested traveller, this walking tour is an invigorating and enlightening experience. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A diamond in the ruff
I was planning my first trip to Rome and had a huge interest in Ancient Roman History but all of the travel books that I looked at had sparse information on Ancient Roman society and landmarks. Luckily I came across this book on amazon.com.I spent a full four days following the tour in this book along with traveling to some of the extras that are listed in the back of the book.It was an excellent tour and not only did it give my girlfriend and I a ton of exercise it also allowed us to take in the overall feel of each section of the city that we journeyed through while following the books directions. On top of that it actually created interest in history from my girlfriend which is rare in itself.I strongly suggest this book to anyone who is going to Rome and wishes to take in the grandeur of the Roman Empire. As an added bonus the book lists the author's e-mail address which I used to write him a letter after completing my trip.He is extremely responsive to everything I said about his book and would enjoy talking to anyone with an interest in Rome.A definete 5 star product. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful walking guide......
As a veteran of the stumbling around with four books in my backpack trying to make sense of the block where I'm standing approach to travel (I don't do guided tours), I became a happier person the day I discovered someone had compiled the highpoints of Venice into one accessible walker's guide. A LITERARY COMPANION TO VENICE by Ian Littlewood is a fine guide. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Venice
A Literary Companion to Venice was the best introduction to Venice I could have read in preparation to my first visit there. The author shares stories of famous and unknown writers alike to weave a history of Venice byway of walking tours throughout the city. Great maps and illustrationsaccompany the seven wonderful walking tours detailed by the author.Afterreading this book I almost felt as if I'd been to this wonderful city andknew my way around.

4-0 out of 5 stars Venetian walking tours for readers
The English author adds a literary dimension to seven Venetian walking tours by incorporating quotations from novelists, poets, essayists, reporters, and other observers. The resulting book is livelier than you might expect. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 80% accurate isn't good enough for hikers
I just returned from a week of hiking the Amalfi coast, with this book as my only guide. It is great in concept, but only about 80% accurate on all of the hikes we did. That's not good enough.Mr. Tippett needs to follow a hiker who does not know these trails and towns and is using his book as the only source and get it accurate.Stairways were not where they were supposed to be, distances are inaccurate, and so on.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!
this book is great, the walks are very well described and full of great information and facts. this is the only book you need to have a wonderful vacation! the only advice i'd offer is that because the area around amalfi is so steep, all the walks were pretty tough. we discovered that the walks marked "easy" were strenuous enough and the ones marked "medium" or 'strenuous" were not so much fun. Also its good to look at the maps and see when they are on car roads and when they're just on walking trails. around sorrento we discovered the walks were often on car roads andalthough they were small and we didn't see many cars, its just not as nice and relaxing, we wouldn't go back there. but around amalfi and positano you got to really escape all modern life and it was completely magical. So that information was in the maps but we didn't really think to look at it until after doing the walks.

4-0 out of 5 stars great walks on amalfi coast
if you're interested in exploring the hidden nooks and crannies of the amalfi coast this is a great addition to your trip.like having your very own local guide.we hiked the phoenician steps in annacapri, from amalfi to ravello.it guided us up ancient staircases, through hidden alleys and by gorgeous farms.each hike is rated according to difficulty and amazingly rated very accurately.great way to get away from the tourist areas and really get to know this extraordinary place ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
The descriptions of the walks and of the excursions (presumably car-based) appear very useful; we'll be trying some of them in a few weeks. The book would have been more attractive & useful with more photos, especially color photos, & more maps would also be helpful--but what's there will help a great deal in prioritizing what we do.

5-0 out of 5 stars best hiking anywhere
The Italian dolomites offer the best hiking anywhere.Lost of variety great food reasonable prices and lots of people who speak English. This book gives accurate information, wonderful hotel recommendations and suggests towns I would not have discovered elsewhere.A must for anyone who hikes. The hikes may be easy for some, but it there are lots of more diffucilt options when you get there. We followed the Liptons advice and had a fabulous trip! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and amusing
We spent 6 days in Italy, and ended up only doing 2 of the walks (plusvisited the site of a 3rd), but found this book a great resource forgetting away from the crowds, without being in the back of beyond.Itprovided ideas for some truly unique places to go that weren't on the usual"tourist's map" of Italy. Also, one of the hotel recommendationsin the beginning (there aren't many -- the book is not at all acomprehensive guide) was a great find.We did find at least onediscrepancy in a trail marking (at the end of the Florence walk), so bealert and flexible!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, and sadly out of print
