5-0 out of 5 stars Short book but many interesting stories
McPherson does a great job setting the scene of the events that took place at Gettyburg. It's obvious he knows his stuff. My recommendation is to read this before going to the battlefield and then read it after. You can even take the tour he suggests throughout. I didn't have the time to take his tour--I used an audio CD--but it's worth it either way. He has good side-stories that make the scenes come alive. This is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with info and insight
This is a great little book...the title says it all, it is exactly what you get but with personality.I have only been to Gettysburg once, and only for a couple hours. While there I had wished for some additional info to be available, to better understand the event that place there over 100 years ago. That battle helped shape and define our country, but the facts would be lost if not for writers like James Mcpherson. The book literally walks you thru each battlefront and adds personal touches to make it more than a history book.If you have never been to Gettysburg, this book will surely inspire you to visit the site.If you have been there, like me, it can only enhance your memories and provide detail that is easily overlooked. And, it has inspired me make plans to return to Gettysburg, but with book in hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book before you visit the battlefield
I got this book in the mail from Amazon the week I was leaving for Gettysburg - good thing it was so short and to the point. It took 2 nights to read, but it was very well written and did a great job of explaining the things to look for on the battlefield while also giving a pretty good overview of the different aspects of the battle itself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money...
PLEASE NOTE: THERE are NOT 170 hikes in the book. The whole series must contain that many.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have for scout leaders / Excellent for planning hikes
It is clear that these authors were not kidding when they stated that they have a love affair with the Appalachian Trail. The descriptions not only cover all you need to know to be prepared to hike a certain section, but there's lots of history and local color as well.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for detailed sectional or thru hikes on AT
There are many books about the AT, but this one is superb for it's detail and attention to partial sections for hiking. Can be used for thru hiking as well. Gives day and overnight parking details, profile of terrain, degree of difficulty, recommended direction, water and shelter locations, topo maps, mileage etc. Everything that a hiker needs!! Excellent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!
This book is terrific! The color photos in the book are clear and beautiful. This book was easy to follow, gave easy to follow directions, and gave a lot of insight on what time of day and the time of year to take perfect pictures. This book even tells you what camera lenses to use.I've purchased many waterfall books and I have to say that this one is the best I've seen!I only hope that Scott Brown writes books (and takes photos) in his neighboring states.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obviously a Labor of Love
This is a FANTASTIC guide book to waterfalls in the Keystone State. It is really exactly the book for what I wanted.Gorgeous color photographs of waterfalls, shot by someone who not only knows how to shoot them, but who loves nature photography and really wants to pass his expertise on to the reader. And he uses real film, which in this digital age, is a refreshing and inspiring turn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Info. on the Endless Mountains
The book is well written and provides good information for the hiker enthusiast. However, better maps, possibly topographic type from quads. and photographs, that would entice the hiker, would make this a five star book. It's good to see a book written about this area of Pennsylvania, which is truley a hidden treasure!

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This is a good book, it gave me lots of ideas for hiking that I doubt I would've found otherwise. The hike descriptions are generally informative, giving you an idea of interesting features, terrian, elevation changes, ect. Also, a great idea is the use of GPS coordinates for locating trailheads- I found them very useful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Practical, but uninspiring
This is a decent book describing the basics of 50 different hikes. The book has two pages of text plus a small map of each hike. The text tells you how long the hike is, provides basic driving directions, and indicates whether the hike is rocky or wet. However, I felt uninspired after reading about the hikes. I was left wondering whether it was really worth a two hour drive for some of these out of the way hikes.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource
This is an good book describing several trails in the area. Some of the trail descriptions are a bit on the short side, but overall it does a good job locating overlooks and trail descriptions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource--we owe a lot to the author
Tom Thwaites has done a lot for the Pennsylvania trails, and is the father of the Mid State Trail, which is my favorite trail to day hike. This edition of 50 Hikes in CPA is nicely updated from the last edition, and the hikes are all excellent. Dr. Thwaites loves great views, and so do I, and this book will get you to the best of them. One thing I especially like about this book is the careful research that has gone into relating the history of the areas you are hiking in--it's nice to know a little something other than where you are! About the only complaint I have about this indispensible guide is the fact that some of the suggested hikes are quite arduous and long for me. I'm a big guy, so I wear out easily, and this may not apply to you. What I've done, though, is used this book in combination with the MST maps to make my own day hikes with the same destinations. I've also done some of his recomended hikes as overnighters. Between this and Jean Aron's "The Short Hiker" you have a great start on hiking in this area. Kudos to Dr. Thwaites and his efforts! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A+ for Jeff
Backpacking Pennsylvania does exactly the job the title leads you to believe it will do.37 major trails are described and made accessible to the the Pennsylvania Backpacker.
5-0 out of 5 stars jmitch does it again!!!
Jeff Mitchell's dusty boots had already covered new ground when he wrote "Hiking the Endless Mountains" - the first hiking book to explore the beautiful forests and creeks of Pennsylvania's Endless Mountains.Written by the Pennsylvania native, "Backpacking Pennsylvania, 37 Great Hikes" has now established Mitchell's books as the most current and definitive guide series for hiking and backpacking throughout Pennsylvania. In "Backpacking Pennsylvania", Jeff travels beyond the Allegheny Plateaus to provide concise and well-written trail descriptions.Just enough information is provided for each trail system and Mitchell leaves it to the reader to put his book down and to just start hiking!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro to PA's Surprising Outdoor Opportunities
Yes it's possible, in "industrialized" Pennsylvania of all places, to hike for days without seeing a single other person, and outdoor enthusiasts from throughout the Northeast should be more familiar with the Pennsylvania backpacking experience. I'm a native of the state who has been seriously hiking and backpacking for years, and I'm still continually amazed by the variety and extensiveness of Pennsylvania's long-distance hiking trails. Amid the state's surprisingly remote and wild areas are dozens of trails that exceed 20 miles in length, and several that surpass 100 miles. There is far more to Pennsylvania backpacking than the famous Appalachian Trail, which Jeff Mitchell accurately describes as one of the least interesting trails in the state. This book is not meant to be a true guide for any of the trails described, but summarizes the long-distance hiking opportunities available. Therefore, unless you really know what you're doing, following trails with this book will be difficult given its abbreviated travelogues and very non-detailed maps, so don't try to do an extensive trip *only* with this book. Detailed trail guides and/or maps are usually available elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ron Kuhn
I have lived in Pennsylvania all of my life, hiking, camping, fishing and hunting. As a seasoned outdoorsman I thought that I knew most of the lookouts that the Keystone state had to offer. Upon reading Pennsylvania Overlooks I realized there are many more overlooks than I imagined. From now on I plan to carry the conveniently sized book in my vehicle so I can find the overlooks in the area where I am traveling with my family. This book simplifies the search for overlooks by organizing the overlooks into regions with directions and points of interest. The B/W photos inside give a great indication of what you will see at the overlook without giving away the sheer beauty once you actually get there. I plan to purchase several copies of this book as gifts to friends and family that enjoy beautiful natural areas, especially breathtaking views.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Travel Companion
In addition to the descriptive overviews of the scenic overlooks, I find the "Opportunities" and "Amenities" sections very helpful when planning outings to these sites. Also, the compact size of this book (approximately the size of a folded state map) makes it a convenient fit in my backpack and glove compartment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Be aware of what you are ordering
I must confess to some disappointment upon receipt of Pennsylvania Overlooks. The only color picture of these gorgeous overlooks is on the front cover. All other photos are black and white. The narrowness of the book (less than 4 inches wide)makes it difficult even to appreciate the black and white photos. The whole feeling of the book is like those narrow books you get at chain motels that tell you where the locations of their other motels are. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Misguided at times
I agree with the above reviews. I've only hiked 5 trails listed in this book so far. I was not pleased with the directions for Raccoon Creek State Park. The Wetland Trail dead-ended into a cattail marsh. I resorted to bushwhacking uphill to reconnect to the Wetland Trail. Now I'll admit it was silly of me to not bring a park map along just in case the directions from the book were a bit off, but having rather good luck with previous hikes listed in the book, I figured I'd live dangerously. I ended up near the Pioneer campgrounds and declared myself lost. I called the park office and a handsome park ranger came to aide. Maybe I should get lost more often. :o)
4-0 out of 5 stars 4.49 stars out of 5
This book describes 50 hikes in western Pennsylvania, which for this author means west of US 219.The hikes range in difficulty from a 1.8 mile stroll through a sculpture park in Johnstown to a 12.8 mile trek around Lake Wilhelm.Since 32 of the 50 hikes are drawn from the Laurel Highlands and the Allegheny National Forest, western Pennsylvania's premier hiking destinations, this book presents the best hiking western Pennsylvania has to offer.Several hikes are also drawn from greater Pittsburgh, so Thwaites does a good job of diversifying (geographically and in terms of difficulty) his hike selection.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great source of suggestions
This book is by far the best trail guide I've ever used.(a) The directions to the trailhead are accurate to the tenth of a mile; (b) the directions on the trail are also very accurate; (c) each trail description has its own topo map; (d) the trails feature what the book says they'll feature; (e) the trails are fun!Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Amateurish at best, but only local guide available
I was glad to find this book, since I was looking to explore some of thehiking trails in the area. The trails are good, but I'll admit that some ofthem are hard for an older person like myself to accomplish. Still, I wouldhave been completely unaware of many of the trails without this guide. Likemany self-published books, the writing and "look and feel" of thebook leave much to be desired, but the basic information is there, shouldyou care to sift through the "prose and poetry" to get to it! Mywife, who teaches English at a local university described the writing as"quaint and rambling" and typical for non-authors. I skipped itand tried to follow the routes.
