5-0 out of 5 stars This book is fantastic!
Canyonlands is a wild and wonderful place to explore.I would have been lost without this book.I was able to decide ahead of time what areas of the park I wanted to spend the most time in by reading the detailed descriptions of jeep roads and trails. The beautiful color photographs helped me make decisions as well.I found the maps to be extremely helpful and the estimated travel times to be very accurate.David Day knows his stuff!

4-0 out of 5 stars Something new in Hiking Books
This is a Great book for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.By including a focus on the jeep roads of the Canyonlands area David Day has provided the hiker with information necessary for access to its fantastic hiking trails. The format is similar to his other hiking books. The maps and trail descriptions and commentary are not only helpful but very interesting. The photography is great.I particularly enjoyed the section of color photos I like his trail overview which includes a rating of his enjoyment of the trail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for What it Covers
This is a streamlined version of Adkison's lengthier book about the national monument, but is perfect for the short hikes in this beautiful region. It has everything a pocket guidebook should have: clear descriptions, mileage, elevations, maps, and ratings. This is my favorite guidebook for the Grand Staircase whenever I do short hikes.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Grand Escalante

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad maps, bad estimates, but good pictures
I talked with a park ranger who made the comment, "We use Steve Alan's book to find all the people who get lost from Kelsey's descriptions."I didn't believe this until I went down to the Swell and did the Virgin Spring hike described in Kelsey's book.He said that he did the hike in 9 hours. Using GPS I would estimate the hike at just about 30 miles total.Steve Allen recommends 2-3 days to complete the same hike.Kelsey's descriptions of this complicated hike are dangerous and sure to leave you searching for hours for the trail in a place where getting lost is easy because of infrequent use.He also puts a large disclaimer in this book "Don't blame me" because someone blamed him for getting lost on the local news. The only thing good about Kelsey's book are few good pictures.Save your money and buy Steve Allen's book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Using Kelsey's work as reference material.
As a student of geography and land use planning, Kelsey's book has provided further references for deeper research.

4-0 out of 5 stars New hikes in this edition
I've done several hikes based on the 2nd edition of this book (and other Utah hiking books by Kelsey), and I've learned that for the simple hikes, he offers plenty of good help. For the longer or more complicated hikes, Iwill always consult both Kelsey and Steve Allen's canyoneering books andseveral maps. I've also learned that Kelsey walks much faster than I do.Once you figure that kind of thing out, it's a pretty helpful guide.Thisedition has added some new hikes that look pretty interesting (that are notin Steve Allen). If you're planning hikes in the San Rafael Swell, youdon't have much choice besides Kelsey and Allen. I say buy them both. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The Metric distance ruined this book
As an American I lived my life of [...] years in feet and miles.I too heard my [...] teacher (nearly 45 years ago) say better get used to metric the US is the last country on the planet not using it and SOON you will have to use it.Never happened! (except for beverage providers who saw an oportunity to give us less product for the same price!) Wilderness hiking can be very dangerous, you need to know where you are, and I can't be pulling a calculator out every page to figure out how far 13.7 meters is!!Otherwise the book is filled with very good information.Pick up a detailed map at the trail head the maps in the book are too small to be of any help.

3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but dense
Got this book in preparation for a trip to the area. It's very comprehensive, but looks like it was laid out with an old fashioned typewrite. Still, if you plan to hike the Paria River, it's definately a good resource..

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth It's Weight!
Found this guide book very helpful in a canyoneering trip down this nice canyon. I read the book before an April 2003 Paria Canyon trip starting at White House Trailhead and going all the way to Lee's Ferry. One thing was missing from my pack though....the book!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Utah's Favorite Hiking Trails
This book is a fabulous review of Utah's excellent hiking opportunities. It is informative and stimulating!

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad Maps
I've used this book extensively for climbing Utah trails.Though the book contains rich content, I would have expected it to include more information about alternative routes. For example, it only includes information on one (the longest) route up Mt. Nebo.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book has it all...
great descriptions of the hike, recommendations on best seasons, really good maps, wonderful colour photographs, comprehensive driving directions and easy USGS quad map referenes - could it even be better than the incredible California Hiking?I bought Canyoneering the San Rafael Swell as well, and am sending it back because this book covers what I need in a much easier to read style - and is less likely to get me killed en route while rock climbing without a belay.Highly recommended. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Needs better maps
On trying to follow the guide to one of the hikes, the Yellow Rock/Box of Paria River, we were fortunate to meet a BLM ranger as we were about to set out. It became clear that we weren't where we thought we were, and had we continued on, would have entered a confusing and unmarked maze of canyons instead of the entrance to the Box. This is the fault of this book - the maps are poorly labeled and confusing, and the directions (which usually start out by referring you back to some other hike, a poor strategy for a guide book) were, in this instance, just plain wrong, giving incorrect mileage to the point where we should have been. The two locator maps at the front of the book are especially bad, the first oriented perpendicular to the other covering the east part of the region, the second one showing the western part. They should be combined into one map across both pages, show the monument and park boundaries and have some kind of legend, along with better labels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kelsey's Guide to off the Beaten Path
Sure Kelsey has an ego thing about himself being in all his photos, and the hiking times are off by 50% (Add that 50%, however, no one else has come close to offering a guide to such remote places.I've used it to find indian ruins, weird in-the- middle-of-nowhere canyons, etc. Most of his info is quite accurate.People who can't find something through his descriptions probably would become lost looking for anything. Most places he mentions you'll never find another soul at...that's the best part.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sir, modern computers actually make creating an index fairly simple.
I once read that, "Indexes are among those necessary but never spectacular products of hard as well as skilled work that can sometimes make the difference between a book and good book."
5-0 out of 5 stars this book is not for beginners
For all of those people giving this book one and two stars either you need to come more prepared or the desert is no place for you.I have been on many hikes in this book and his other books and the only time I had a problem is when I forgot a map or tried to find a trailhead in the dark.Yes he gives you enough rope to hang yourself but there is nowhere else you will find this much info on these remote incredible places. If you can't negotiate these canyons maybe you should go on a ranger guided tour at your local national park. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Steve Allen's commitment to exploring every nook and cranny in southern Utah's vast network of maze-like canyons has granted him legendary status. His guide to the San Rafael Swell is the first volume in a three-part series that will captivate both novice hikers and elite rock climbers alike. Unlike many guides, Allen takes time to discuss the Swell's rich history, which undoubtedly lends itself to the reader's greater appreciation for the land. But this guide is not a misty-eyed overview. Allen knows that canyoneering leads hikers into confusing territory, so his landmark descriptions are presented in meticulous detail. He covers 63 separate adventures and manages to cover them with a skillful writer's grace and a mad scientist's penchant for detail. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enough detail to be useful but not so much that it ruins the fun
Keep in mind that this book describes the San Rafael Swell. This is a remote, undeveloped part of the world. If you use a guidebook, such as Steve's, that doesn't include all the GPS points and topo maps, then maybe you'll realize that you are going to need more than a guide book to do this stuff safely. And that, my friends, is the genioius of Steve's book.It will get you started, but you need to invest some time with maps etc before the trip to do it safely.
3-0 out of 5 stars I like the book, but...
More maps would be nice. I would have to agree about the using the minutes (ie 70 minutes) for beta.
2-0 out of 5 stars dangerously wrong info
We used Allen's books many times. The information is wrong way too often regarding exit and entrance points in canyons. It seems that nobody reviews guidebooks before publishing. The worst trio we discovered so far are: Steve Allen, Michael Kelsey and Vivian Lougheed. Hiker beware! ... Read more

If you are planning a tour of Utah's national parks, this guide should prove handy if not essential. It includes easy strolls and multiday backbreakers for Bryce, Capital Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, and Zion. In all, it describes 123 hikes in a user-friendly format. Easy-to-read info blips provide data for hike distances, elevations, difficulty ratings, hazards, and in-seasons. Each hike also includes an ample route description and a few tips thrown in for good measure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hikes for evey level of experience
We have just returned from hiking & camping in Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches And Canyonlands (Island in the Sky area), and found this book to be one of the best of any guide book we have used (over 30 years of hiking). The hike descriptions were so interesting I read them again after doing the hike! The description of how one gets to the trailhead in in a separate section titled "driving to the trailheads", which may cause problems for individuals who don't read scan through the chapters first before deciding on a hike. We foundthe descriptions of the trees and plantlife on each trail very useful and I would not hesitate to buy another of Ron Atkinson's guide books, they are obviously very well researched. ... Editorial Review

The sedimentary cross-section views and eerie rock formations of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks can give visitors the impression that they've missed their turn and ended up on Mars. Bill Schneider gives a guided tour of this surreal land with descriptions of 63 hikes for Arches and the three regions of Canyonlands: the Maze, the Needles, and Island in the Sky. Hike descriptions include classics such as Balanced Rock, Fiery Furnace, Tower Arch, and Murphy Basin. No-frills is the name of the game here. You won't find too many amusing anecdotes, but their absence allows the guide to fit neatly in any pack. Read more

Couldn't find some of the best hikes in the park, such as COurthouse Wash. Too basic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very accurate & useful guide for hiking Canyonlands & Arches
We used this guide to do six hikes in the two National Parks and it provided excellent information for all of them. The writeups, descriptions, maps & summary information were all accurate and very helpful. Bill Schneider even seemed to anticipate the few times we would have a problem -- each time we were unsure of the trail direction, a quick look at the book showed that he had specifically included extra comments for the problem we had encountered. I recommend it wholehearedly for anyone wanting to hike in Canyonlands & Arches.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book looks great.
I ordered this book for an upcoming hiking and biking trip in the Arches and Canyonland areas. We are striking out on our own after using a guided tour last fall. Had enough of trails where you bump into somebody every hundred feet?Michael Kelsey's books take you far from the crowd, and way off the trails, into spectacular wild country of southern Utah.(Many are proposed wilderness areas.)This book on the Henry Mountains and the Dirty Devil River is a good example. We used it for day hikes and were well pleased with the results. The maps of access roads can be hard to match up with what exists on the ground (county roads in Utah are seldom equipped with signs helpful to hikers looking for the trailhead). As for the hiking part, his maps tend to show suggested routes rather than actual trails.Mr. Kelsey writes for experienced hikers who know how to get lost and then how to find themselves again. But when you follow his advice, you'll get into places you will never forget. His books also supply a wealth of history and geology about the area. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable but needs updated edition
John Hart is the real deal, and anyone hiking the Great Basin needs this book. His mileages are accurate and so are his descriptions of routes. The only criticism I offer is that the book is a bit dated--for example, there is an easy-to-follow use trail to Morey Peak instead of the XC route description JH offers. Also worth noting is that JH must have a very low-slung vehicle.Driving a garden-variety SUV (1996 Jeep Cherokee) I have never had any trouble on any of the roads he describes. 5-0 out of 5 stars good things come in small packages!
This is a book that packs a lot of worthy information into a small book that is easy to backpack. You will need detailed topo maps as those in the book are for overview only, but the hikes are exquisitely detailed andaccurate. Many of the trips are in the less well-known areas of Nevada and Eastern California and will please those who like to hike withoutmeeting anyone else. The author encourages readers to find alternative routes to destinations and, although most of the trips are to peaks, thereare some easier canyon hikes.Longer trips definitely need experienceandroute-finding abilities. ...
