3-0 out of 5 stars Keep looking.Brunt didn't find him.
This is a reasonably well-written book by somebody who is supposed to be an expert on sports, though some of his hyperbole makes me wonder about that.(He describes a game where Orr got three goals and two assists as the most amazing, incredible, unbelievable performance by a defenceman in the history of the sport, when half a dozen defencemen had had 4 goal games, others had 6+ point games, and Orr himself would do better in subsequent years.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Bunch!
I used to play hockey when I was much younger and now that I am getting back into it, I wanted to get as many books and videos as possible to remember the old skills and to find out how much has changed since I used to play. Of all the books that I bought and read, this one was the best in my opinion. I felt that it went deeper into the "How's and Why's" of techniques than Hockey Goaltending by Brian Daccord, which is my second favourite book. The way that Jim Corsi presented the concept of the Goaltender's "toolbox" was excellent for getting the information to stick in my head.

Within the 11 seconds that inspired this memoir, Travis Roy realized his dream, then smashed into his nightmare. On an October night in 1995, Roy, a talented young hockey player, skated onto the ice for his varsity debut with Boston University. Eleven fateful seconds later, he was paralyzed from the neck down. 4-0 out of 5 stars Eleven Seconds review
In Eleven Seconds, a story about a young man at the age of twenty-one living life and one event happens to change it all. Playing in his first collegiate game of hockey, Travis Roy crashed the corner after a dump in, tripped, fell, and broke his fourth vertebrae and becomes paralyzed from his neck down. This single event changes the way he and his family act towards each other. The story goes through his amazing recovery and the heart and determination he had. The author portrays Travis Roy as a hero to those that are in deep pain or trouble. He accomplishes this by showing the good and bad times in his recovery stages. After a few months at the hospital, Travis Roy wants to get back into the world and show that this freak accident will not keep him down. He returns to college and tries to become a normal student, but this is impossible because he has become a well-known person due to the accident. The grit and determination of Mr. Roy and his family members through the hard times to get to a level of peace and acceptance of what has happend is amazing. This story makes you, the reader, feel that you just need to make the best of the hand that is dealt and that if anything goes wrong you just have to deal with it and make the best of the situation. Eleven Seconds is a great book and should be read by all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading this brought that night back
On Oct. 20, 1995, two of my friends and I gleefully took our seats in Walter Brown arena. We'd saved up the money to purchase season tickets (huge money for undergraduates), and couldn't wait to see the triple crown banner be raised. The beginning of the night was all of the heartpounding celebration it could be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth More Than 11Sec.
If your looking for a book that lets you get into the world of college hockey this is it.Its a heart felt story of a kid who is a great hockey player and dreams of playing for the University of Boston. He does so and his dreams come true when he finally hits the ice. However he only sees 11 seconds of ice time.He checks a player in the boards and breaks his neck, his whole college career ends in just 11 sec of ice time. The rest of the story tells about his life after hockey as a former player now confined to a wheelchair. It goes into detail about how his family must change, his girlfriend must change and how he must change all due to an accident. The book is not only a good ready, but also an easy read.I found that is was hard to put this down even for a min.I have to admit as a I guy I try not to show emotion, but there are times while reading this book that I did get a tear or two in my eyes. The book makes you think and also you will come to love this kid when you are done reading.I know I have!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Visions for Leadership
This book is a must read for the dedicated hockey coach. The 12 coaches interviewed (pro, semi-pro and college) offer their philosophies on "leading" people. The other reviewer is correct. This is not a guide to developing strategy. Rather, a very effective way to explore how you evaluate and develop players, how you create team, how you develop yourself as a coach with a vision, and how you implement the vision. This book is an honest examination by the most successful coaches of their successes, failures, the challenges of being a coach, leading players, and balancing work and life. If you approach coaching hockey as a "calling," to help improve young men and women, you will read and re-read this book constantly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insights
Good book. It's basically an interview process with all the coaches listed where they write the question asked followed by the response from the coach, with most of the questions being the same. There is little strategy discussed in the book which was the only disapointment I had.Other then that, it's fantastic for anyone in the coaching bussiness or in managenement. Some of the coaches don't go into great detail on things or give short answers, but I'd recommend it for an hockey lover. ... This book is wonderfully writen and easy to understand for people who want to learn the basics of hockey.I have been an occasional spectator of the sport since 1965 and enjoy watching high school, college and professional games (especially the Minnesota Wild!).Unfortunately, I wasn't familiar with all of the rules and types of penalties (except for of course, high sticking, hooking and slashing). So just the other day, while watching an intense college game, I decided it was time to buy a book.I am pleased with my selection and am buying another copy for my friend.By the way, were women! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars allsport
Slightly unfair review by the previous reviewer, when they say the book doesn't have all the great photos of the last 50 years. It is made fairly clear by the tag line of the book that it IS a collection of photos from the Allsport and Hulton-Getty. Anyway, for me, it was enlightening to see a lot of extraordinary photos that I had never seen before. I've already seen the really famous ones !!

3-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, but...
This mammoth book does a wonderful job of displaying some brilliant sports images, and does a fairly good job tracking the evolution of sporting photography from static view-camera shots to today's cinemaesque, remote-camera action images. But as an actual history of sports photography, it's a bit lacking. The editors apparently felt content to limit their selection of photos to those in the Allsport and Hulton-Getty agency archives, and so a large chunk of the notable sporting images and history from the last century are just plain not there.4-0 out of 5 stars Yet another great book from ALLSPORT
Sports photography is both a fascinating medium and one which has stood the test of time. Despite the onset of the digital camera and computer generated images, the craft remains fresh, yet few give thought to the creativity and skill of our best sports photographers. Sportscape shows in detail the creativity, efforts and techniques that world - class photographers use to take the stunning pictures we see in newspapers, magazines and other printed media. Many great pictures feature in the book taken by photographers such as Clive Brunskill and Adam Pretty. I recommend it for anyone with a keen interest in the art. ... Read more

This mini-anthology has a wide range of hockey stories from one written by the American, Pulitzer-winning author William Faulkner (this story was junk, though well written if you like Faulkner) to life on the road as a minor league player hoping to be called up (poignantly and rawly written like the life itself), to a homily to Toe Blake, to a portrait of The Great One (Gretzky) by Peter Gzowski, to how to make your own backyard rink.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Hockey, plain and simple...
I read this book back in November of 1999.The co-author Frank Condron did an excellent job with Gordie Howe in putting this historical book together. On top of the simple fact that a picture is worth 1,000 words. The whole book is a Hockey Pictoral Treasure.Mr. Condron did an excellentjob of writing this book. What I mean by that is.Simply because youdon't feel your reading Gordies words. Its like Mr. Howe is right next toyou and he is pointing at each picture as you turn every page. Also it isquite obvious after all the press, awards and fame, Gordie Howe is still agentleman.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRUE HOCKEY MEMORBILIA!
This work represents the finest photo collectionof GORDIE HOWE'S career to date. If YOU are old enough to remember the epic battles between the Montreal Canadians and the Detroit Red Wings of the 1950's-60's, YOU canrelive these times in photo concepts - eg. Howe's 545 goal in the MontrealForum eclipsing Rocket Richards's record and the 15 minute standing ovationby Montreal fans; Howe's commentary on the Montreal dynasty once JacquePlante and Jean Bellevue arrived on the hockey scene; the skilledfis-ti-cuffs of Gordie Howe against bad boy, Lou Fontinato of the New YorkRangers; and Howe's best picks of NHL players he most admired! ...
