A SAFARI STORY WITH SOME ASTUTE OBSERVATIONS
This book is the rousing and interesting story of writer Robert Ruark's two month Safari into the wilds of Africa. This was done in the 1950's and he was accompanied by his wife who also hunted by his side. Gritty and often frightening descriptions of the chase and the kill are acompanied by astute observations on the Africa of that time. He had strong opinions of many of the African tribes. Some he praised highly and others he condemned and he explains why. If you are wrapped in the fog of political correctness don't bother to read this. If you want an unvarnished, honest, very interesting tale, by all means, buy this outstanding book.

you know how they say''anticipation is sweeter than the possession'' thats what happened with me.Before buying this book I'have read the other reviwes,with no disrespect to other readers, but I think they have over done it a little.I am a long time big game hunter,what I found what is missing in this book is a thru heart of an hunter. The horn was there, but not the hunter. After reading the book, I remember more of the memsaabs hair care than the hunting adventures.I felt ,for Mr Ruark the shooting part of the safari was the most booring bit.Well that is his styl and I respect him BEST BOOK About an African Hunting Safari
This is by far and away the BEST book I've ever read about a hunting safari in Africa. Ruark and his writing are in a class by himself. ALL the other books about him like Use Enough Gun were published after his untimely death. NONE of them compare. They are collections of articles and/or very short stories (some fiction) that collectively don't hold a candle to Horn of the Hunter. His writing makes you feel like you are beside him sharing his experiences. You will not regret buying this book. Simply the best!! ... Read more

The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference
A must have reference for anyone seriously interested in all aspects of Fly Tying.Even though I consider myself a reasonably adequate tier, this book will provide many answers.Knowledge never comes cheap but this reference sure helps bridge the gap.

Benchside is great!
I finally got a chance to use this great book last week. I had taken a fly tying class earlier this year and couldn't remember how to tie a couple of flies. The book is well written and gives precise instructions - with pictures - on how to tie each and every fly. The instructions are easy to follow.This is a must have for any person who ties flies!!

Advanced Mapping
Finally! An excellent book I can't imagine any serious hunter not owning! Before reading this book, it took me years of mistakes and hours of wasted time in the wrong spots to hunt. It all makes sense when I compare my few encounters of success, with the great information provided in this well-written book.I can't wait to see an "Advanced Mapping" edition!!!! The Master of Topography.
Brad Herndon is a master at using the terrain to tag whitetailed deer.Before reading this book, I knew whitetails used terrain funnels to travel, but I did not understand how to recognize them.All of that changed when I read 'Mapping Trophy Bucks.'I can now view a topo map of an area I've never set foot on and pick out the best places for a hunt.My deer sightings have gone up tenfold!!

A great reference guide
This book is a great reference guide for anyone. If you're just getting started in saltwater, this book is a must have. If you're experienced this book will give you a nice overview of just about every species of fish,coral,and invert, what to look for and what to stay away from in those species.

A great series of books for traditional archers
For those interested in making traditional bows these books come highly recommended. The instructions are simple enough for beginners, and detailed enough that experienced bowyers can learn several new techniques, a rare quality in many "how to" books. Explained very well are the theory's or why's behind the instruction.

A nice trip
Thank you Doug Terry for telling me that triggerfish won't chew my earlobes off!I actually had a nightmare over that one!
Just a little too guilty of a pleasure
Mix one part Rodney the Shark Guy, one part Ted Nugent, and two parts your uncle who always seems to have those tall tales, and you wind up with this wild ride through the spear-fishing haunts of Humberto Fontova.
I couldn't put it down!!!
This is probably one of the most enjoyable books I have read in the last five years. The author and his cohorts are definitely brave, almost certainly missing a few screws and possibly suicidal, but they enjoy what they are doing so much that after a while the insanity of it all doesn't seem to matter. Stories about divers diving with football helmets so they don't get knocked out on the steel beams of the oil rig and the stalking of sharks (!!) in the opaque murk at the bottom of the sea floor would seem farcical or just stupid coming from almost anyone else, but when Fontova writes it is riveting, believable and also hilarious.

Inspiration and Science in your own Home
On vacation, we toured the coast and did some hiking.It was relaxing, but my inner voice kept telling me, "you need to get in shape." Then we decided to rest for a day and check out the Monterey Aquarium.Let me say, the fish were beautiful!They were all lean, with almost no fat on them.And their conditioning would make the Brazilian Soccer team proud.When we got home it hit me -- why not follow the example that nature (presented by the Aquarium) provides?I picked up The Simple Guide to Fresh Water Aquariums, set up a 70 gallon tank, and did extensive research.After 90 days I concluded that the fish are in great shape for three main reasons:

Outstanding First Book
This book saved my fish and consequently me a lot of grief when I started up my first aquarium.The author's advice is solid.The focus of the book is how to set up, establish, and maintain a healthy system.All the essential elements are covered:cycling, filtration, water chemistry, lighting, plants, ongoing maintenance, fish to avoid, etc.The book is not intended to be an encyclopedia, and you will discover the limits of its coverage as you progress.It is nonetheless a terrific book for starting out in the aquarium hobby. ... Very very good
It is clear that the author has a serious love for Discus. Very easy reading, lots of great information. His excitement is felt in his writing.

Intresting introduction to the discus world
This is one of many books written on Discus by Bernd Degen, an very experienced discus breeder. The book is particularly suitable for the beginning Discus keeper and has excellent topics about discus care andselection. There is an rather good introduction to breeding too, showinhthechniques in detail. It is not an very detailed book, I think most Discusexperts will miss more detailed information on breeding and on selection,specially about the wild types. Awesome!!
This was a fantastic book, the accounts of the "Man eaters of Tsavo," were incredible. I would reccomend this book to anyone who loves the greatout doors. It will shed a new light on the raw power of the Animal Kindom.

THIS MAN ENDURED ALOT OF THINGS IN AFRICA,HIS ACCOUNTS OF STALKING ,HUNTING AND KILLING THE TWO MANEATERS OF TSAVO IS A VERY GOOD STORY HANDS DOWN.THE AMAZING THING IS THAT THESE MANELESS LIONS CAN STILL BE SEEN TO THIS DAY AS THEY ARE STUFFED AND IN A MUSEUM HERE IN THE STATES! PATTERSON WAS AN ENGINEER CONTRACTED TO WORK ON THE RAILROAD, HIS WORKERS KEPT QUITTING HIM ON ACCOUNT OF THE LIONS FEEDING ON THEM AT WILL, PATTERSON FINALLY DECIDED TO TAKE MATTERS INTO HIS OWN HANDS AND THE EXCITING EVENTS THAT TRANSPIRE ARE WORTH THE READ.

There are better birddog books available.
This book is an o.k. read and offers some good information if you don't mind sifting through the outdated advice. (First Copyright in 1974).

Buy only if you plan to Hunt birds
Had I known that the book was written for bird hunters I would have saved myself the trouble.

Very good Book
For any one interested in tying any of Bob Clouser's flies this is the perfect book. The hints contained in this book allowed me to tie much better flies

Great How-to Book for Fly Fishing
This is one of the best books for introducing anyone to the sport of fly fishing, whether the angler wants to shop for equipment at Orvis or Wal-Mart. The information is clearly explained without going into tedious details that novices (and experienced anglers) don't want. Everything is covered here--from rod types to fly lines to casting basics. The excellent graphics are helpful--especially of the knots. Some books have knot instructions that are impossible to follow--"knot" so here! For someone who wants to start fly fishing, this book would make a great start. My only complaint is that the book came out almost 20 years ago; it's time for a new edition. . . . I just read that there's a new edition coming out in a few months. Maybe you want to pre-order that edition. And while you're waiting for that, pick up the "L.L.Bean's Handbook to Fly-Fishing" (color illustrations) and Schreiber's novel, "Life on the Fly."

Barsness is currently the best
Barsness has written the best current overview of shotguns for hunting: not sporting clays, trap, etc.He is not aligned nor does he show a marked prejudice for a particular type of shotgun like the side by side which is so prevalent today.He explains the advantages and downsides of variousguns and does a particularly good job on the very important, if not vital,subject of stock design and fit.Although I think you can find much ofthis information elsewhere, Barsness brings it together in a very conciseformat and cuts through the "poppycock."Plus, the photos aregreat! ... Excellent Book!!!
I have been carrying handguns concealed for over 10 yeras and this book is probably one of the top 5 books I've read on the subject. It's not about tactics but more on what handguns and accessories work and tips on cleaning and what to buy to clean your gun. They get into specifics with revolvers and autos. I actually went through the book after reading it once and highlighted parts to use as reference. Whether you're new to shooting or looking to carry concealed, I highly recommend this book. ... Freemarket Cell groups
I bought this bought this book because I do respect Ted Haggard ministry and his books. After reading the book, I bought another 2 for my pastors. By the time I wrote this review I bought another 10 books for friends in ministry. I do think that this book is a great resource for anybody that want to grow his church

Bait and Switch
Despite this book's title, the author provides no useful information regarding the art of angling with flies, and readers seeking advice on fishing the waters of Colorado, where the author lives, should look elsewhere.

Excellent, insightful, and thought-provoking.
This book blows the doors off of mainstream accepted taboos in our culture. After personally experiencing the highs and lows of traditional cell-based groups, I was at a point of wondering why change was not being made in churches. Then, I came across this book. In it, Ted delightfully shows how a church can face change and come out of it truly blessed. Thanks so much for sharing your results, and your honesty! We are all blessed, because of it. I exhort other churches to openly test their waters and see if this book and what it presents can be applied in their congregations. Who really cares about trout?
Richard Brautigan's Trout Fishing in America could have been a real classic for the ages.That is, it could have been a classic if it wasn't about trout fishing and if it wasn't written by Richard Brautigan.Brautigan seems directionless as usual here, leaping haphazardly from one place in time to another.Just when he comes up with an interesting line or word, he seems to forget about it and leave you hanging while he goes off to some other world.His writing is the equivalent of sitting in a chair under a tree drinking MD 20/20, suddenly falling onto your back, and then staring up at the leaves and wishing that it all meant something quite profound.And that is where the problem lies--Brautigan wants the grander themes and ideas of the world to be expressed in his books, but he never does the legwork to get you there.You feel teased after reading his poems, like a girl who says she'd like to date you, then leaves you to go swimming at the YWCA, and you never hear from her again.Do you see where I'm going here?You can't make lemonade out of a sourpuss.Brautigan never gave it his best shot, and unfortunately, he left the world without having said very much to it.

Dear Zik, I Lied: I Really Hated This Book But Didn't Have The Heart To Admit It
Brautigan was a very weird man. I understand he went on to take his own life. That's a shame, but honestly I can kind of see the suicidal mindset in him if the man he writes about in the first-person in these is a real reflection of how he truly thought. He was a grouch and mean-spirited to the people around him. He clearly thought he was smarter than everybody else and his writings show he probably wasn't. A lot of people say this book is original but it's not, it's more like...typical midling-talent hack writing with countercultural, back-to-earth themes. He wanted to shock and tease and praise a simple life all at once and be non-tactfully frank about certain things to the point of grossness, and that's not my cup o' tea. Other than the poignant "childhood Kool-Aid" piece, the only part I liked in any of these books was in "Trout Fishing" when Brautigan caught a humpbacked fish whose odd manner of swimming he compared to Lord Byron's limp. Even that wasn't spectacular. Also, his wife should have left him over all the mean things he said about her. She must've been a saint to put up with him. I honestly don't see why any of these books make for good reading. They're a waste of time.
