Living in Alaska and being an avid fisherman, I have purchased and read every Alaskan fishing guide that has been published since the mid 80's.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on Alaska fishing
This is the best fishing book about Alaska I have ever read.It beats 99% of all fishing books I have seen.
5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly comprehensive tour of Alaskan fishing by the state's top fishing experts
Now in a deluxe, updated third edition, Alaska Fishing: The Ultimate Angler's Guide is a thoroughly comprehensive tour of Alaskan fishing by the state's top fishing experts. Featuring full color photography throughout, Alaska Fishing covers all seventeen Alaska sport species (including both fresh and salt water fish), all fishing methods (fly, spin, and bait), and all six regions of the state, with in-depth details on over 300 of the most productive fishing locations. Tips on regional climate and conditions, run timing, visitor service costs, trophy and record fishes, USGS map references, fishing regulations, flies for Alaskan fish, a cross-referenced index and more make Alaska Fishing as friendly to novice fishers as it is valuable to seasoned experts. This book is well organized and provides a great deal of useful information for the first time alaska visitor. The charts are particularly helpful as you travel along the highways. They quickly identify and rate all the major rivers and their salmon runs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Alaska fishing book I've seen
This book is packed with all sorts of detailed, useful information for much of Alaska's destinations.Though it probably doesn't cover everything perfectly (Alaska is a big place)I have compared what the author says to some of my personal experiences, and he is quite accurate.
3-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile, but needs more work in some areas
Writing a guide to fly-fishing in the huge state of Alaska must be extremely difficult - tantamount to writing a book like "A Fly-Fisherman's Guide to Everything West of the Mississippi."At the outset, the author would have to make some important decisions on which of the literally thousands of the state's waters should be included in the book, and which waters should be left out.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the second best Alaskan Fishing book out there.
I don't think this book is the best Alaskan fishing book out there, but it is a close second.Renee Limeres' Alaska Fishing is the best book out there right now. Both these books stand heads and shoulders above the others out there. This book doesn't cover as many locations as Limeres, nor is it as solid across all sections (like fish natural history etc.) but it is well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for planning a trip to Alaska forfishing
I think this book would be helpful in planning a trip to Alaska to fish. After reading about the crowds fishing from the roadsides I believe I will hire a guide and a boat for my trip.Without reading about it I would probably have been disapointed in having to do "Combat Fishing" at the road crossings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fishing Kenai Peninsula
Intend to spend a week fishing the Kenai this Summer. This book gives me the information I wanted to wander on my own and feel that I will still catch fish. Well organized both in terms of fish to expect, but also well broken down by areas. The author provides sufficient information on those fishing Alaska for the first time to feel relatively comfortable that they will be prepared with the proper equipment and knowledge to have a successful trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True must for Kenai Area Fishermen
If there ever was a perfect recipe for an area fishing guide, this is it. Beautiful photos, great maps, fantastic stories that bring the areas alive and just plain great advice. Atcheson, has created the mold that I wish others would follow for the other states and regions I fish.He covers the whole gamut of the Kenai Peninsula, not exhaustively, but by picking a handful of representative locations, fishing styles and target species. Then he gives away his fishing secrets like an old and trusted fishing buddy. In fact in his intro he says the book's first objective is to tell you where to fish.He claims to do this to improve his fishing Kharma, and I hope it is working.

If you are preparing a trip to Alaska, this books describes you all you need, starting from flies to use for the differnt species, techniques to fish them, equipment to use, colthes to take with etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tie before you fly.
This handy book provides a detailed instructions for tying a wide variety of flies that will be useful when flyfishing in Alaska. The book is organized into chapters devoted to a particular type of fishing (i.e., still water, streamers, saltwater, etc.).A set of handy tables matching up fly to species and time of the year is provided. Also included is information on how to fish the various flies.4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile for all fly anglers, even non-tyers
Route's guide gives a manageable list of flies along with a good amount ofreasoning behind each. The timing/species charts are excellent inthemselves. This volume is worthwhile for all fly anglers, even non-tyers. In addition to providing a guide for tying/buying flies for Alaska, itgives a good bit of how-to and even a hint of where-to.I used it prior tomy most recent Alaskan venture and it was most useful. One question:Whyno marabout spiders? ... Editorial Review

For anyone in North America (and elsewhere) who is hooked on fly-fishing and pursues it past the initial stages of tangled lines, spontaneous river dunkings, and emptied bank accounts, there is one goal that dangles with a tantalizing glimmer just out of reach--the golden ring that spurs anglers on to perfect a variety of tricky casts, study entomological texts deep into the night, and wade through sleep with visions of lurking grizzlies, monster rainbows, and rivers paved with salmon. That ultimate goal is the final frontier of earthbound territory: Alaska, the angler's paradise. So if you dream of one day stepping off a bush plane somewhere in the Alaskan outback, you might as well start planning now with Dan Heiner's guide to the state's nearly limitless sport-fishing opportunities. Heiner's anecdote- sprinkled and info-packed guide takes a narrative approach to fly-fishing this vast area; his experience is related through stories as well as advice. Initial chapters include tips on equipment, travel, accommodations, and, of course, bears. But the real meat is about the fish and fishing: which species to chase, when and where to chase them, and how to bring them to net. And if that's not enough to set the gears in motion, the color photos are sure to leave you drooling...or dialing up Alaska Airlines stat. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Collected fishing writings, but not a guide, by Dan Heiner
The greatest reason for mystery about Alaska's fishing lies not so much with the size and diversity of the state, as with the reluctance of writers to divulge what they consider "secrets" -- for fear that theywill turn into zones of combat, and these authors then become the scorn ofthe populace. As a result, most writings reveal little more than the mostpopular, widely known locations, and common information on techniques andfly patterns. Dan Heiner's book is more of this same style: but here, heseems to relate his experiences and feelings, predominantly as a guidedclient -- urging others to do the same.He eludes to particular places andtechniques, but does not tell the reader where or what they are -- insteadtelling them to get a guide for that.In several instances, he baits thereader by saying he is excluding several locations from his list of bestrivers because of fishing pressure. The reader doesn't know which ones heis referring to, but several of those left off the list are among the mostproductive silvers salmon streams in the world -- no secret. While guidedlodging is one way to enjoy fishing, this is not for the majority offishermen or prospective readers, and Heiner does not adequately cover thelogistics and locations for countless camping/rafting/boating and otherfly-in experiences. His coverage of fly patterns, while more thoroughwith respect to rainbow trout, is substantially different from what onewould want to target other salmon species.Several of the maps, for thewestern rivers (Goodnews and Kanektok Rivers), and Kodiak Islandmisrepresented the location of major lakes and drainage outlets. The bookprovides very common knowledge, replete with obligatory campfire talesabout bears, and would be appropriate for those who prefer the comfort andcatering of a lodge experience (and can afford it).Very little more isprovided to those seeking adventure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable insight from an experienced Alaska fly fisherman.
If you are planning a fly fishing trip to Alaska, this book providesuseful information. The Bristol Bay drainage is the focus of the book andeach key area (Iliamna, Katmai, Alaska Peninsula, Wood River-Tikchik Lakes)is covered in brief, along with information on the Goodnews, Kanektok andKenai rivers and Kodiak Island. Also included is advice on fly selection, gear, etc. The author has obviously fished a great many of the rivers inAlaska and has shared some of what he knows. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A guide worth tracking down...recently reprinted
The idea of fishing alaska for dollars a day stems from the concept of renting one of some 200 forest service cabins in the state. The cabin system is generally affiliated with hunting locations, but many are also amenable to fishing opportunity. So few guidebooks exist on alaska fishing logistics, that I was determined to obtain this one (the author had kindly supplied me with select pages to plan a trip last year). To my delight, the author (and publisher) have reprinted the most recent, 1995 edition.Since that writing, much of the information contained in the book is now available on the universal web-site for cabin reservation information.Even so, the book provides some additional guidance on where the fish are (and aren't), what to bring, and what to expect. The book is due for a revision, taking into account rehabilitation of some of the cabins, the current reservation (and lottery) systems, and, possibly, including the fish and wildlife service cabins on Kodiak and the Adak Islands.Still the book is more comprehensive than more selective books on cabins in south-central Alaska.I rate it at four stars, a definite "buy". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Far from the comforts and stresses of "civilization"
In 1969, Barney Sabo decided to resign from his position as a secondary school principal and move to a remote part of Alaska with his wife and reside in a wilderness hunting/fishing lodge almost 200 miles outside of Anchorage. Alaska's Evergreen Lodge On Beautiful Lake Louise is the biographical story of how the move was made, the life style changes that ensued, the challenges and adventures experienced so deep into nature's wilderness and far from the comforts and stresses of "civilization". Alaska's Evergreen Lodge is highly recommended reading for anyone who has ever dreamed of chucking it all and going "back to nature" to enjoy a simpler life. ... Read more
