5-0 out of 5 stars Benchside is great!
I finally got a chance to use this great book last week. I had taken a fly tying class earlier this year and couldn't remember how to tie a couple of flies. The book is well written and gives precise instructions - with pictures - on how to tie each and every fly. The instructions are easy to follow. This is a must have for any person who ties flies!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An impressive collection of fly recipes, tying steps, and techniques
Collectively compiled and authored by fly fishing experts Ted Leeson and Jim Schollmeyer, The Benchside Introduction To Fly Tying is an impressive collection of fly recipes, tying steps, and techniques. Guiding readers through a compendium packed from cover to cover with professional, in-depth information on the artistic nature of fly fishing, The Benchside Introduction To Fly Tying provides a comprehensive, step-by-step approach to color blending, knot tying, hook measurements, fly proportions, threads and materials. A core addition to any dedicated fly fishing reference collection, The Benchside Introduction To Fly Tying is very strongly recommended as the ultimate illustrated guide for the fly fishing enthusiast from novice to veteran.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good Book
For any one interested in tying any of Bob Clouser's flies this is the perfect book. The hints contained in this book allowed me to tie much better flies

5-0 out of 5 stars "Clouser's Flies" is an exceptional Fly-tying book.
"Clouser's Flies" is an exceptional Fly-tying book. The writing is clear and concise, the photographs are excellent, and the chapters are well thought-out. This book is mandatory for the fly-tying beginner to the advanced tier, and for those of you that are interested in the versatile Clouser Fly and streamer fishing. Clearly this is the best book produced on tying the Clouser Fly; understandably so, it is written by the person who first developed the fly. On a scale from 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest rating, this text is a 5. In Brief, this book is a must purchase for your fly-tying library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for any serious tier
It has been a long time since I read a book with such detail. Not only are the directions and explainations to the point, but the photographs are supurb and eliminate any questions that usually arrise due to lenghtly explanations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Fly Book You Can Buy

5-0 out of 5 stars Trout Flies: The Tier's Referance
This book is a must on any serious fly tyers desk. The color photos and detailed pictures captures the essence of learning to tye fly's. The patterns and techniques are very refreshing and give good in-site on details and basics. If any one asked me why buy this book it would take more than a thousand words to describe. If you want to learn good techniques, de-mystify some troubles you encounter in everyday tying, learn about the patterns and see how they are tied, then this book is for you. I think this is Dave Hughes best work ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Might be the best book for many tiers

Editorial Review

Hailed as a classic almost as soon as it came out in the early 1980s, this combination of entomology and fly-fishing instruction puts a small insect--the caddis fly--under the microscope to help anglers get big results on the water. Misunderstood for years, LaFontaine explains why caddis should be an important part of any fly-fisher's arsenal of flies, and his arguments are very persuasive. With in-depth and anecdote-punctuated discussions of the insect's biology and life cycle, tactics for deciding at what stage in the life cycle caddis are being fed upon (nymph, emerger, or dun), and various methods of presenting imitations, the author provides a thorough and scientific approach to catching fish. 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have in your collection
I've read this book twice and refer to it regularly.Gary LoFontaine's dedication to the scientific method, insatiable curiosity, and love of fly fishing make this book an indispensable resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detail, detail, detail! No substitute for this book!
Gary LaFontaine died this year.A great shame...but he has left behind a body of work that enriches us all.5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING.
This book is for anyone who wants to understand better why certain patterns work one day and not the next. For all of those died in the wool dry fly fisherman, read this book and you will start fishing below the surface, where most of a trout's diet is taken. This is as much a scientific work as it is a manual on how to take more fish more often. The only negative aspect of this book is that it focuses on the caddis fly (although Mayflies are mentioned).A similar work on Mayflies is needed. All in all though, this is the "Bible" that should be on all of our shelves. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for the new fly tyer
Nice bench side guide, with great photos of the completed flies and step by step sequences.Good (but brief) general information section covering materials and basic technique. This book is more like a manual than a encyclopedic reference like the Leeson book. The spiral binding makes it very handy to use in the confines of a small bench like mine.I really like this book and would recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A good source for new ideas!
This is a book I got on a whim at the local fly shop. What I like is it showcases patterns from a lot of people who are excellent tiers, but do not have the name recognition of a Jack Dennis or Mike Lawson. The pictures and recipes are all first rate and for the average tier more than enough to put the fly together. The patterns are fresh with alot of new ideas. This is a book that would go well with the Fly patterns of Umpqua Feather Merchants book as a fly tying recipe book. Personally I think you will like this book a great deal. ... Read more

It's easy to forget that in between his collections of essays, John Gierach has published a number of slender volumes, each devoted to a single aspect of fly-fishing and usually of a more technical nature. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 10 star must own for the serious authentic fly fisherman
Aside from the utterly awesome and accurate illustrations of dozens of flies, its the honesty of the author I appreciate. In reading how he came to tie his own flies I felt a kindred spirit because he mentioned, the artistic as well as the frugal, self reliant, and even scientific in a 'quaint, naturalistic sense' of tying ones own flies.5-0 out of 5 stars Fun reading
This book is great fun to read and gives you a better perspective on flies and there history. The chapters are well thought out and very enjoyable to read. The tools and materials chapter is very good also. Like all of Geirach's book it is a good read that you will read again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference, low price
I have only been tying flies for 3 years and I use this book like a bible. It is well written and takes a lot of the guesswork out of tying new patterns.Like others have said, the variations section is very valuable and the added text tells you what insects the variations are matching. Also contains helpful tips on what types of water each style should be fished. If you are just getting in to tying and are feeling overwhelmed by the number of patterns out there, then BUY THIS BOOK.It's an awesome primer and I have caught and released numerous trout by tying the main patterns that Dave suggests. Also, the beginning of the book offers advice on tying materials and the basic stuff you should have.I highly recommend this book to the beginning tyer and also for those who are more experienced.Tight lines!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
If you need quick reference to fly patterns, this is the book. Great photos..Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well balanced book
Like other reviewers before me, I've found this to be a very useful reference. It's got a good selection and cross section of the different types of trout flies, many of which are also very good for warm water species such as panfish. The fishing notes section is very useful in telling how this type fly should be fished and under what conditions. One feature that I really like and that I did not notice that anyone else mentioned is the Useful Variations section. The book will give detailed explanation of how to tie and what is needed for a particular fly (example Royal Wulff) under a section (example Wulffs) and then give the recipes (the "how to" will be the same) for a number of other flies of that same type. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A brave new old world
I have only recently starting flyfishing and am in process of learning with dries. Picked up this book in an effort to understand one more aspect of this wonderful sport. Dave Hughes has done an outstanding job whetting my appetite for fishing with soft-hackles, winged and wingless wets (flymphs, I love that word!) and fuzzy nymphs. The respect he has for those who opened his eyes to this area of the sport comes through in the elegant and simple manner in which he explains the material. This is clear, practical, and a whole lot of fun. Terrific!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
Hughes' writing is clear and concise. His distillation of work by earlier writers on the subject is lively. It appears to me that he is generous in acknowledging the innovations and achievements of others including his own contemporaries. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wet Flies - the best!
This is the best book available right now for learning general theory of subsurface fishing. Hughes codifies all the previous knowledge and techniques of famous fly-fishers of the past and compiles all of this into a book that is informative and very easy to read. The discussion of the patterns is worth the price alone. The techniques for fishing the patterns could be put in another book and would be a bargin itself. And his personal knowledge and friendship with Nemes, Hidy, and Rosenberg is demonstrated in stories of fishing with them. Really, this book is good read at any time of the year, not just the winter. Get it, read it, use it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a good place to start
If you are a fly tyer of any sort and want to try your hand at traditional featherwing flys this is an excellent place to start. With enough hisorical background and excellent menus this volume gives in great detail methods to perform the traditional tasks as well as how to build the flys themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Reference Work
Distinguished by sharp colour photography and clean layout, this book ishighly recommended as a reference work for anyone interested in tying andpresenting the Classic Salmon fly. I enjoyed the chapter on hook making,(flashbacks to college metal work days), and having previously undertakensome picture framing, found the tips in the fly mounting chapter veryuseful. The colour photography of the Traherne collection and other patternspresented is excellent. The books contents will be of considerable use tobeginner and expert alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb Photographs and a well done presentation
Radencich has produced a work of art in this book. The photographs are outstanding, and there are not enough superlatives to do them justice. The steps are so well done as to present a short course in photos alone.Verywell done.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mariano, Martin, Koch & Holbrook and now Engle
There are a few really sound books that address tying small patterns.Vince Mariano's In the Ring of the Rise, Darrel Martin's Micropatterns, Holbrook & Koch's Midge Magic and now Ed Engle's Tying Small Flies.5-0 out of 5 stars Tying Flies for Spring Creeks and Tailwaters
This is a very nicely done book on small (size 20 and down) flies of the variety typically used for selective trout on tailwaters and spring creeks. It reviews familar patterns like RS2's for example, but has ample new material surveying hooks, fine threads and tying techniques.I like Ed's style of writing as it seems to convey years of experience fishing tiny dries for selective trout in a low key writing fashion.Fills a gap along the lines of a modern Koch's Fishing the Midge, only wider in scope and greater in detail. Will become a permanent part of my collection. This along with Lawson's Spring Creeks are a couple of recent "must haves"...... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars reminds me of my childhood
Among other things the perfect fish is about fly fishing for striped bass. The perfect fish was created by an artist and therefore has the quirkiness of something birthed from an artists mind.In it kenny gives us his opinions about how to tie flies and shows us that a fly is a little piece of art.He paints scenes of the predator1s world and the world of the baitfish. He intimates on many things, color and light being favorite topics, and relates those intimations to the act of fishing. His thinking is good thinking and it is unique thinking, in my opinion.Through his prose as well as his paintings, which decorate this colorful book, he implores us to agree with his belief that the striped bass is not just a stupid fish, but a perfect fish.Perhaps not everyone can see the magic of what Kenny is saying. The book is dense and by that I mean there1s a lot in there and some of it is pretty profound.A little must be read and then digested and read again, it is a book with which you must have patience.Perhaps kenny1s central theme concerns making flies that are impressions of what they are imitating as opposed to realistic imitations."What a fish responds or reacts to in a fly," kenny says, "is not exact physical likeness but the illusion of life."Kenny creates flies that give "impressions" of what the bait looks like and argues that impressionistic representations work better, catch more fish.As a painter myself I found some of kenny's philosophies to be helpful not only to my fly fishing but in considering the scope of my life. His thoughts involve stripping ourselves of "cultural conditioning" so we can more fully observe the world around us, perhaps with the innocence of a child."When tying squid flies," kenny says, "it is hard to resist emphasizing their tentacles or their eyes because it is how we have been taught to view them since childhood. When we see them as they actually appear in the water they are quite different than what cultural conditioning says they are." I liked this book when I first flipped through it because it reminded me of times I'd spent with my father pulling a drag net through the mouth of a tidal creek and seeing all the life there, all the shiners, mummichogs, and small green crabs. These crawling swimming things that had peaked my early curiosities while standing in the marsh are the food of the striped bass and are things that kenny portrays beautifully.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect fishing book
A perfect fish is a remarkable accomplishment.Kenny Abrames manages to smoothly meld fly-tying and flyfishing technique, with philosophy and art.The narrative is poetic yet descriptive. The art is alive. The flyfishinginformation is incredibly interspersed with thoughts on technique, andphilosophy.A book you can read and re-read and continue to gain insightand information. Its all there. Not a word or phrase is wasted.A mustfor any saltwater angler.

5-0 out of 5 stars When your cold and the water is angry, remember it's why.
When your standing in the water at sunrise and looking out over the horizon your saying to yourself, 'today is the day I'm going to remember what Kenny said in his book", Of course you don't because when youread carefully Kenny says, 'It's not how it's why you fish'.It's why wefish that he talks about in this wonderful account of his world and ours. When my grandson asks why I didn't catch any fish today or why I didn'tbring them home, I now know better my ans. Thanks, Kenny. ... Read more
