Great How-to Book for Fly Fishing
This is one of the best books for introducing anyone to the sport of fly fishing, whether the angler wants to shop for equipment at Orvis or Wal-Mart. The information is clearly explained without going into tedious details that novices (and experienced anglers) don't want. Everything is covered here--from rod types to fly lines to casting basics. The excellent graphics are helpful--especially of the knots. Some books have knot instructions that are impossible to follow--"knot" so here! For someone who wants to start fly fishing, this book would make a great start. My only complaint is that the book came out almost 20 years ago; it's time for a new edition. . . . I just read that there's a new edition coming out in a few months. Maybe you want to pre-order that edition. And while you're waiting for that, pick up the "L.L.Bean's Handbook to Fly-Fishing" (color illustrations) and Schreiber's novel, "Life on the Fly."

Comprehensive and Easy to Read
Tom Rosenbauer clearly and concisely covers the basics that a beginning fly fisher needs to know: from the basic gear to casting, to knots to reading trout streams, you will find he covers the basic questions beginners have well.Tom's writing style is fluid and enjoyable which makes learning all the more fun.It's the best book I have read on the basics of fly fishing; after reading it you will certainly feel like you have enough knowledge to get out there and start catching fish.As far as I am concerned, you cant go wrong with any book by Tom! ... A Very Good Effort
I've had this book for several years and I've found it to be a very useful resource.The hatch charts are extremely helpful, especially for trout anglers.While the author made a better than average attempt to cover the warmwater opportunities in the Keystone State, for the most part only the most well known sites were covered.While Pennsylvania has some world famous trout streams, the variety and quality of our warmwater fisheries is truly extraordinary.Some of the streams that were covered specifically for the trout they hold probably offer better bass fishing over most of their length.Trout centered thinking is far too common in the fly fishing community and as a result this sort of overemphasis on trout is typical of many fly fishing guides.Indeed, the Pennsylvania Fish Commission is guilty of killing thousands of trout annually by stocking them in waters so warm they are sure to die by Memorial Day.I know that Mr. Wolf is a skilled and avid warmwater fly fisher.I hope in the future he will update this guide and give our warmwater fisheries the coverage they deserve.

If you are looking for a book to give you general knowledge on better known trout fishing streams in Pennsylvania, then this book will meet your needs.Unfortunately, the author does not do a good job of covering remote streams in many parts of the state that are excellent producing streams and beautiful places to fish.I was especially disappointed in his lack of coverage of streams in McKean and Warren County.I would not recommend this book to an avid Pennsylvania fisherman.The book is adequate for an out-of-state fisherman who is looking to fish some of the more popular streams in PA.

For my wife
Last summer i introduced my wife to fly fishing. I decided she needed a guide to knots. I chose this one. She is using it. but i found myself consulting it from time to time so i got myself one as well.

Not waterproof!!!!!

eye of the beholder
This book is a compendium of the information that Lefty Kreh has imparted by books and talks at angling shows over his career.Whether this book is useful to you depends on how many of his previous books you have purchased.Much of what appears in this book has been published in some form before. If you don't have any of Lefty's books, by all means get this one.If you have read one or more of his books, a lot of the information in this one will look familiar.

I had the pleasure of attending a seminar by Steve Hickoff last winter. Ibought this book from him at the seminar, and have used it a lot more thanI ever thought I would.My family and I were on vacation at Sebago Lake inMaine recently, and the information in the book on Sebago Lake, the CrookedRiver, and the Presumpscott River was invaluable.The maps of the Crookedand Presumpscott rivers especially allowed me to get up early, get to agood fishing spot, and even catch a couple of fish (all before the rest ofthe family even knew I had gone fishing). I really like the Crooked River,it has become one of my favorites. As an earlier reviewer stated, this bookgives you the information to get to the good spots, without wasting a lotof time driving around.The book also provided information on whatsections of the rivers were fly fishing only, and the local regulations fortaking trout and salmon. I would highly recommend this book for anyone whoplans on doing any fly fishing in Maine, NH, and Vermont.

Good little guide
Fisherman's Ultimate Knot Guide is a great little guide worth the money takes up very little room and keeps the rust out when it's been awhile since you tied those knots.

I'm sold on this waterproof plastic card concept. Great knot illustrations, too. Amazon.com also sells this author's ROPE KNOTS printed on plastic cards - just do a search for PROKNOT and you'll get 14 essential rope knots on a 6 page waterproof plastic fan pack. I keep both on my boat but could just as well use the PROKNOT cards for camping or tying stuff on the car. These cards rock!

Thejoy of simplicity
Years ago the only book on fly fishing I had was "Trout" by Ray Bergman.At that time all I fished were wet flies.The flies were simple to tie and they also caught a lot of trout for me.As time progressed it seemed that with Dry flies, nymphs, pre-emergers, emergers, duns, and spinners life along the trout stream seemed to get more difficult and frustrating if not complicated.

A really helpful guide to fishing Idaho
This book is the best Idaho guide I have seen.It has clear directions (especially for people who are not familiar with Idaho), plenty of maps, and good complimentary information such as fly shops, motels, and restaurants.It is well written without being condescending, yet it is of just as much use to the experienced flyfisher as it is to the novice.I have not tried out all the streams and lakes listed (obviously), but Retallic and Barker's descriptions and evaluations match those of the fly shops on the internet as much as could reasonably be expected.If I could fault anything, it would be that the book is 5 years old and many things can change in that time.I would really like to see an update.Other than that, I would rate it 4 � to 5 stars.

highly informative, well written, encyclopedic in knowledge
Retallic and Barker know of what they speak. The writers live near, andfish, the water of which they write. It is refreshing to see a "hookand bullet" book that does not try to browbeat you with the authorscasting expertise or remembrances of the West of long ago. Very good and through book

Great aid for your atlas on a fishing trip in the Southern Apps.
The author's knowledge of the territory, exact locations and land marks is very helpful. He does not go in to much, if any, detail about insect life in the streams. Overall a very good book in rating streams, fishing quality, and helping you get there.

Excellent Coverage of a broad topic...
I visit Tennessee in the Spring to fish the Park and the tailwaters, and Ian's book has been my sole guide to these waters since its publication. It covers a wide, wide range of rivers and streams, and delivers enough information to get you on the water with a reasonable idea about what's about to happen.

Great Book
I found this book extremely useful.I moved to Minnesota (land of pike) from New Mexico (land of trout).Very few people in Minnesota fly fish, and most that do fish only for trout.Because of this, it is very hard to find people to teach you what you will need to catch pike/muskie on the fly.I combined this book with one evening with a guide, and I am now catching pike.When I'm not catching fish, I now have a good understanding about what I should try changing.I'd be lost without this book.It has saved me years of trial and error.
Muskie or Musky - great fish on the fly rod
If you are interested in catching a big musky (or muskies), or any pike,on a fly rod or other tackle this book is an excellent sourse of useful information on the fish, how to hunt them, what equipment you need and how to rig.Very worthwhile reading before a day on the water with a good guide.

Think like a predator!
I had the privilege to work on a TV show called HIGH COUNTRY OUTDOORS with Barry the same year he and John wrote PIKE ON THE FLY. I devoured this book and still have it on my shelf in close reach. The techniques aren't just old hackneyed phrases but are true tested tactics gleaned from Barry's experiences. I know of no better way to understand the ways of flyfishing for pike and other large gamefish than to read this book over and over. This book is the authority on backcountry flyfishing.
Rich Osthoff knows what he is talking about.I have read many books that attempt to cover backcountry flyfishing, and none have done so as well as Osthoff's.As an experienced backcountry flyfisherman, I found Osthoff is right on the money with all he had to say.There was still a lot of material to challenge even the experinced though.If you have any interest in catching gorgeous fish in an equally gorgeous setting, this is your book.Absolutely right on the money.
