5-0 out of 5 stars A really helpful guide to fishing Idaho
This book is the best Idaho guide I have seen.It has clear directions (especially for people who are not familiar with Idaho), plenty of maps, and good complimentary information such as fly shops, motels, and restaurants. It is well written without being condescending, yet it is of just as much use to the experienced flyfisher as it is to the novice.I have not tried out all the streams and lakes listed (obviously), but Retallic and Barker's descriptions and evaluations match those of the fly shops on the internet as much as could reasonably be expected. If I could fault anything, it would be that the book is 5 years old and many things can change in that time.I would really like to see an update.Other than that, I would rate it 4 to 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly informative, well written, encyclopedic in knowledge
Retallic and Barker know of what they speak. The writers live near, andfish, the water of which they write. It is refreshing to see a "hookand bullet" book that does not try to browbeat you with the authorscasting expertise or remembrances of the West of long ago.4-0 out of 5 stars Very good and through book

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the very best fishing guides in print!
Wow! A truly superior guide for fly fishing Idaho. The author has assembled extensive maps, seasonal information, local regulations, hatch and fly recommendations, and numerous practical tips presented in a very user-friendly format. Great for both novice and seasoned anglers. It exceeded my expectations in every way and sets the standard for regional fishing guide books. I will definitely purchase other "No Nonsense Guides." If I don't catch fish armed with this information, I should just buy 'em at the supermarket! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for every skill level of Oregon anglers
I have bought every revision of this book since the seventh. Why? The updated information it provides can be priceless. This fishing bible is not limited simply to what fish are biting and where. You'll find this reference book filled with random tips on what species are most common in different areas of your destination, what to catch them with throughout different seasons, if payment is required to park at certain places, accessible roadside parking, new changes to laws in the areas, where private property may border waterways, the latest state records and individualized tips to help you venture forth and catch your next trophy or meal. The information is endless and the maps are very useful as they show docks, roads, trails, put-ins and take-outs. Coming from an Oregon native and avid fisherman, this book is well worth its weight in gold. One thing to keep in mind is the information in this book is not designed for fly anglers seeking information on hatches and casting techniques. It is a general resource to help you plan for your next trip sufficiently and what to expect when you get there.

Editorial Review

Oregon is a big state with a lot of water--although it doesn't need to be intimidating to the angler. Covering the major freshwater drainages of the Cascades and the Coast Range, this guide will get you started whether you plan to go after "half-pounders" in the Rogue, redsides in the Deschutes, or smallmouth bass in the John Day River. The author covers the basics of techniques, flies, and fishing access--and points you in the direction of local flyshops for more specifics. Driving directions, maps, and listings of accommodations and restaurants are included. ... Read more

I gave this book 4 stars because it could have covered more unknown streams. Overall it is good though for people out of town, it gives you reviews on all the major lakes and rivers. i have used this book numerous times to plan trips, my only hope is that maybe that will make an Oregon series that covers ALL the water in oregon for flyfishing!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource For Practical Flyfishing Information

3-0 out of 5 stars A good but not great guide to Idaho waters
While this book is useful, I feel it falls short in a number of areas. The evaluations of the major waters are good, but those of the various secondary streams and lakes are cryptic, maybe necessarily so, and there are virtually no directions to any of these. The reader is given the name of a secondary stream or lake and a couple of lines evaluation. No directions, not even a general location other than the large portion of the state in which they are grouped.Joe Evancho appears to know what he is talking about, but he doesn't do a good job of passing that information on to the reader.I would rate this book about 3 stars (out of 5) and could recommend it if you don't have access to Retallic and Barker's Flyfisher's Guide to Idaho.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for a visitor to Idaho. Usable, complete, & smart...
I just completed my first extended visit to Idaho. I bought this book not expecting much, like most fishing books...This is the exception! I was able to select some out of the way spots, and I was never let down! I rentedboats, found access, met lesbians (oh just kidding) The BEST fishing bookI've read to date! Bob Aydelott

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a great catch.
Fishing Idaho, An Angler's Guide is one of the most useful guide books I've ever had the pleasure to read.Mr. Evancho has gone to great lengths to cover every river, stream and lake in the state of Idaho. He does sowithout giving away any secret fishing holes, but the information is therefor the determined angler to find those special places on his or her own. The book also includes other information useful to anyone plying thebackroads of Idaho -- information on camping, boat ramps and air strips. You can tell that a lot of work went into producing this fine book.Itmakes a great gift for the angler on your list. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book has good, high level, summary information on the various rivers in Washington, and lots of pretty pictures, but almost no detail on where or how to fish any particular river. The pictures are nice but the book itself is almost useless if you are using it as your sole sorce of information to fish a new river with.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but not great.
Compared to other Wilderness Adventures Press, "Flyfisher's Guide to..." books I have read and own,(CO & N. CA) this one is a bit lacking.Fishing tactics and recommended tackle is covered well, but the driving directions are a bit vague and maps aren't as detailed as they could be.Also there are only hatch charts for a selected few of the fisheries.Other WAP books I have read included hatch charts/fly suggestions for most if not all the fisheries it covered. If you are a WA flyfishirman chances are you already have this book.Even if it's a bit lacking compared to other WAP books, if you live in WA or fish WA regularly, you should own this book.It just seems a bit dated and could use a revision. My .02 cents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers the Popular Spots Well
The guide book is a good start to a new WA fisher. It covers the major river systems (only) in good detail. It does not mention any of the otherwaters. The hatch guides are helpful and the river descriptions give you agood idea of what to expect.Read more

Mt. Mazama, a towering, glacier-clad volcano not unlike present-day Mt. Hood, erupted roughly 6,900 years ago, leaving behind the deep hole that is now Crater Lake. This guide to the area provides plenty of useful trail info for hikers, skiers, and anglers--as well as lessons in local botany, geology, and wildlife. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Modern FF Lit Books
Well writtne and thoughtful, Leeson's book, along with his splendid "Jerusalem Creek", are just what the brotherhood of angling literature looks foward to - On teh same Shelf with Thomas McGuane, Bill Barich, Harry Middleton, Chris Camuto,R. Haig Brown, Russell Chatham - well, you get the idea.Highly recommended

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many metaphors, not enough fish.
I can't read this book.If you're going to write about fishing, write about it honestly and tell us why you love it, don't start out with a web of "points of fixity" "dim inferences" "sources of hidden significance".Hemingway once said if you know something truly, and write about it truly, it will represent all things.I can't give this book a fair review, because after just reading Robert Traver's yarns, the styloe of this one just irritates me.

Editorial Review

The Henry's Fork of the Snake River in Idaho needs no introduction, and neither do the notoriously picky and sizeable trout lurking beneath its placid surface. But if you want to catch these fish, you might want to check out this edition of the River Journal series. The book's large, color format, sumptuous photography, and lively, descriptive text bring the river and its angling possibilities to life. Like other volumes in this series from Frank Amato Publications, the river's history, wildlife, hydraulics, and fishing conditions are described in detail for the angler's benefit. ... Read more
