A Delight
The names Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner don't resonate as much as they used to.As the decades go by even the old-timers among us haven't been around long enough to remember them.They've pretty much become historical, iconic figures, like the stoic-looking George Washington on a dollar bill.It's a bit of a sad reminder of the inexorable march of time, but what a great relief to know that this treasure chest of a book is around to keep their memories alive.
An Invaluable Book . . .
. . .for those interested in baseball history or for those who are curious how the game was played a hundred years ago.Life was different: society was different, the players were different, the game was different, and the perception of the players were different.In the decades in between, a lot has changed, mostly for the better, but there are precious few books that can give us an insight to how the game of baseball was played by the major leaguers back then.There is no opportunity to learn from them any more - they're all gone.All we have left are treasures such as this book, which gives us an insight to the game and personalities who played back then: no one can describe a Walter Johnson fastball, an Ed Walsh spitball, a booming shot off the bat of Sam Crawford, or the way a certain player stood, batted, fielded or threw.Lawrence Ritter created the standard for the oral history of baseball and it's been imitated many times, but never as well (Don Honig came close, though).It's a wonderful book, well worth the time and money to read it.

Tremendous book!
A wonderful book about baseball in the early part of the century. You can imagine yourself sitting next to the old guys listening to their stories of baseball in the days of dead ball. It's not necessarily what you would think...it wasn't all hard drinking and hard living.

Inspiring, detailed, practical
One can appreciated the authors' long experience with marine aquaria who elegantly and with simple language explained larger biological concepts yet provide detailed instructions on how do to what and why. Very inspiring are the suggested biotopes that include among others "seagrass aquarium", "reef gorge aquarium", "pizza anemone aquarium", "rubble zone aquarium" as well as the standard reef tank. These are refreshing ideas that are needed with the current predominance of grocery store shelf-like stocked, overcrowded best-of-the-month SPS tanks. Also contains a comprehensive guide about most creatures possible in a reef tank and essentially makes e.g. Sprung's "Quick" guides unnecessary in one's library.

Think out of the box
You won't have to go over the ammonia cycle again here, though there is enough info to get you started. The title is a great indication of what to expect. This book is about thinking out of the box in aquarium keeping and planning them correctly.

Would be 5 stars except for some errors I found
I have been interested in pro football stats since the late 1950s, so I ordered this new encyclopedia immediately (I have all the other ones referred to in this one).And as the authors said might might happen, once I got the book yesterday, I was up until the wee hours of the morning perusing it!
Incredible Value, A Must Have, Room For Improvement
I have been buying Football stat books since the 1970's so I feel like I can offer a well informed opinion. I have been waiting for a book like this since Total Football II became out of date and overall I am very pleased. This book raises the bar, it's got pretty much everything and then some, but there are some areas that need to be improved.
Oh, Baby.
It has all the crap you'd expect for something like this, like the main stats for every player, a list of all the head coaches and their yearly records, hall of fame members (including yearly finalists), pro-bowl rosters, yearly standings (with more detailed stats than you'll easily find anywhere else) complete with a blurb on the season, and top-five finishers in a variety of categories.

Not for the armchair cruiser
I would someday like to cruise around the world, and I bought this book in the hopes of learning more about the possible routes so that I could make some preliminary plans. I'm sure it will come in handy in a few years, but for now, it's overwhelming. World Cruising Routes

They aren't 'poles' anymore
Regardless of whether you don't know the difference between a fly rod and a cane pole, or whether you not only know the differences but you've made your spouse learn about them, there's a place on your book shelf for Casting A Spell. George Black's investigative trail took him all over the country on a merry chase after the fly fishing equivalent of the Holy Grail: the perfect bamboo fly rod. Is there a piscatorial equivalent to the Stradivarius? George is convinced the best were from the hands of Eustis William Edwards, and he goes on to show the reader that the excellence that began in the mid 1800's flourished under the stewardship of makers like Billy Edwards as the new century began. Fly fishing in America certainly didn't start with A River Runs Through It and today the bamboo fly rod is alive and well as the new generations of rod crafters strive to create the next Strad. There are good reasons why the bamboo rod has enjoyed a renaissance in recent decades and when you've finished this book you'll understand both the craftsmen and their customers a bit better. This is a good read from an investigative writer with a proven track record in this area.

GREAT SWIMMING BOOK
This book is an excellent training guide for the swimmer at any level.I have been swimming for many years and after reading this book I have taken my skills to a higher level.I feel much stronger in the pool and my endurance has really increased.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone who loves to swim.

Lying to Vickie, Cheating Death, Stealing Life!
Now that I got your attention... I just finished the book minutes ago, and it was very inspirational to say the least.
Excellent Tribute
This is the greatest book I've ever read. I finally get the truth of one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. I got this for my birthday and I was so excited that I finished in it about 11 hours over a two day span. I'm glad I read this and I will never forget Eddie Guerrero.
Beautiful
I love the Cheat Death Stealing Life: The Eddie Guerrero story book because it was a very emotional, beautifully writing page turner. I knew he had a lot of problems with drugs and alcohol but I never knew it stemmed that far. This was a five star book, but if I had my way I would double that. That's how great it was. culture of surfing & the science of spirituality
Surfing is a world i have never had a window into, and probably never really will. As an outsider I loved reading about the cultural aspects of surfing. These stories built a notion of a surfing "ethnology" if you will.Being a surfer is in some ways like being part of a particular ethnic group...the great surf quests, the history of surf on film, the gegraphy of waves, the surf myths themselves & the almost folk tale aspects around surfing locations and surfing experience.Coming from an anthropological background, the cultural aspects of the book intrigued me.I found people's stories & character devleopment amusing, colorful, and in depth from a certain aspect. These stories tell the reader something about how a group mentality can develop as a result of the search, the waiting, and the community that builds around surfing.
What's Next Boss?
This semi-autobiographical book starts with the author having one of those moments where what comes after will not be like what went before. In his case the determining factor was a bout with Lyme disease. He had the disease a lot harder than most people and was basically bed ridden for two years, he was over the disease but left weak and probably depressed. Solution: Go to Mexico and go surfing.

This book points out that religion is actually a product of evolution. It turns out people who control their pain with myth are more sucessful biologically.

Good resource...
As the subtitle "Building a Winning Team" implies, the book touches on the various aspects required to building a team. The authors do an admirable job of providing a wealth of information across a broad spectrum of topics. If you're interested in a general guide with the basics this is the book for you.

Stop swinging like a "Sunday morning duffer"
A complete mechanical overhaul. That's what this book is about. Don't expect the "magic moves" to be simple adjustments that you can make over the course of a week.I've read this book three times, and practiced countless hours trying to emulate the proper swing.I can now say that it was all worth it, as my shots now have more power, and my wicked slice is all but forgotten.

Great book for beggining marathoners!
This book makes it easy for a runner who wants to jump to the marathon level.It gives you a step by step training guide along with nutrtional tips as well.

too short.
I am training for my first marathon and thought this book would be a good resource. It's got some good motivational stuff, but the book is just about basics; I didn't feel it had any "meat" so to speak. You can read it cover to cover in an hour or so, and I didn't come away with anymore information than I could find on marathon websites. Save your ten bucks and do the research on the net, buy a different book, or even better - join a marathon training group headed by a veteran marathoner.BTW, I did pick up Nancy Clark's marathon nutrition book - that is a great resource.

I went from a 4:40 marathon to a 4:24 marathon (2nd marathon).Not bad!I'm using this training plan again and going for 4:15.I like this book because it cuts to the chase, it's easy to read and just gives the basics.There are training plans for longer times than 4 hours as well. ... Read more

Good book for really knowing baseball
I am a huge Dummies fan. So when I recently decided to learn more about baseball, I naturally turned to the Dummies guide. What I found was a book that, true to its name, does help a person who knows absolutely nothing about baseball. If you knew nothing about baseball, you could pick up this guide and read the first 3 chapters, and become conversant.
Joe Morgan is a genius!
If you think someone whose ego is bigger than the Pampas of Argentina can ever be a genius. Because I find that ego usually clouds intellectual process. And if my line of reasoning is correct, Joe Morgan is the stupidest person in the world.
Great book for a new fan
I got hooked watching the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 post season, but I realized that I was very ignorant about baseball.I bought this book in the spring, and it taught me an incredible amount about baseball.I now watch almost every Red Sox game and enjoy the games much more through understnnding the basics and a lot of the subtleties.

A Must Read for All Players, Parents and Coaches
As a coach at a prep school, the experiences that Coach Fitz is dealing with are all too familiar.Michael Lewis puts together a touching work that causes the reader to stop and think.
Must Read Book
As a former High School and College Baseball player, and a current high school baseball coach, I have never read a book that epitomizes youth baseball today more than this one. Lewis' description of his experiences, and his coaches experiences, regarding todays parents/athletes could not be better. Every parent of a youth/high school athlete should read this book before they even consider complaining to their child's coach. I am only in my mid 20's and I can relate to many of the experiences described in this book. It's a very quick read as well. If I could give it 100 stars I would.For those readers who complained about the length of the book, yes it is a quick read but the book only costs 10 dollars.Anyone who is looking for a lengthy book should know not to purchase a book that is 90 pages long.For those of you who were, and then bought the book, that's your own fault.Great book. ... One Hand For Yourself, One Hand For The Ship
THE ANNAPOLIS BOOK OF SEAMANSHIP by John Rousmaniere is the ur-text on sailing used by virtually every sailing school as its primary educational source. Now in its third edition, this eminently readable and well illustrated book is encyclopedic in its scope, crammed full of practical information about sailing vessels, the mechanics of sailing them, and the traditions of sailing. It's a measure of the excellence of THE ANNAPOLIS BOOK OF SEAMANSHIP how familiarly Rousmaniere presents this largely alien topic with its many very specialized terms of art.

This book has some pretty good info and is quite comprehensive and well laid out.If you're going to buy 1 book, let it be this one.That's if you ever get around to reading it (it being so comprehensive and all) it's almost easier to go out sailing than trawl through it's many pages!But a worthwhile reference.

Good for the neophyte, nothing new
This is a good book to have if you know nothing about nutrition and want to learn some of the basics. You can collect all the basic information here through general Internet research. True, it's nice to have it all in one place in a logical format, but I really expected much more detailed advice for a book targeted specifically to endurance athletes than 'you need to manage your carbohydrates over the length of the event'-type advice. Not worth the money in my opinion.

Easy to digest (sorry!) and helped my riding a lot
Ryan's writing is clear and effective. I had some of the basic concepts, but reading her book really clarified how to eat before, during, and after long bike rides. Since reading her book I've set a number of PRs for long rides, due in large part to changing my pre-ride and recovery eating habits. I strongly recommend this book to any endurance athlete who wants to feel better while running or cycling. It's the next-best thing to seeing a nutritionist in person (which I also recommend).
