5-0 out of 5 stars Bicycle repair and maintenance
Excellant manual! Great info and well illistrated. I use mine a lot!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book... could be better...
This book does a great job covering everything basic to intermediate.I'd highly recommend it and I think that it's the best I've seen in this price range. It's not Barnett's manual but it is better than the Park tools and Zinn books in my opinion.I'd like to see more (and better quality) pictures.I've seen high rescolor pictures in books half this price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete, well-written, easy-to-understand.
I like doing repairs and maintenance myself to save money. Now that I have a good bicycle, I want to service it myself. This repair manual is nice. It is full of good illustrations and pictures, tips, and advice. Most things are explained in an easy-to-understand manner. It's obvious that the author likes servicing bicycles, and that he wants the reader to enjoy it too. This makes the book pleasant reading material as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read book for power meter users
If you presently train with a power meter on your bike or are thinking of getting one, this is a must-read book.Authors Hunter Allen and Dr. Andy Coggan are eminently qualified to write this book which is the first full-length book devoted solely to the subject of training (and racing) with an on-bike power meter.Hunter allen is a full time coach of cyclists and triathletes who uses the power meter as a key element in his training approach.Dr. Coggan is renowned as a widely published exercise physiologist and is also an avid master's cyclist.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Book on Cycling Training With Power - Finally!!
To understand where I am coming from: I am a licensed cycling coach and serious cyclist.I've been using a bicycle power meter (PowerTap) for years, and training with an indoor power-based trainer for even longer. For full disclosure, I have also met both authors in-person, and I know one of the authors quite well.

Editorial Review

Lennard Zinn explains that it doesn't take special skills to learn how to care for one's bike, only "a passion for spreading new grease on old parts." Clearly, his ambition is to share with newcomers the Zen-like joy of bike maintenance. But it's seasoned bike mechanics that should be tripping over each other for a copy of this comprehensive and ambitious manual. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still the best guide, but ...
If this the first Zinn MTB maintenance guide you buy, you'll find tons of useful info. If you own the previous version, you'll see most of the material remains the same. The major (and welcome addendum) is the inclusion of rear shocks. However, few models are covered. For front shocks, there is still major and extended references to old forks, which I am in doubt ifpeople still use them, and superficial reviews for new ones. There are a few new items added like tuning rear shocks, Stan Notubes, slime, tubeless etc - but this info is readily available inweb sites. Overall I give this book 4 stars average - five if this is going to be your first copy, three if you have already one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
I have to say before getting this book I was a little worried it would be to advanced for someone so mechanically challanged to follow but it details just about every thing you would ever want to do on a bike that even someone like me can follow.
5-0 out of 5 stars Benefits for both Veterans and Rookies
As a rookie, I first checked out the second edition Zinn from the local public library - it taught me the basics of adjusting the limit screws on my derailleur and how to replace spokes on my rigid frame mountain bike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear instructions reinforced withgood diagrams and photographs
Clear instructions on how the bike and associated parts work, how to fix with good drawings or photos to clarify the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well laid out and up to Date
This book is the best description of cycling maintenance that I have seen. Lots of clear pictures, great layout thorough explanation with great tips that come from experience. The best part about this book? It covers all this current technologies on bikes. Eg how to bleed hydro breaks, how to dismantle and service some common brand forks and rear shocks, sealed bearings etc. A lot of work has gone into this book and it deserves the 5 stars. Cheers.

3-0 out of 5 stars For young eyes only?
I was disappointed to see what really seems to be a promising text (see the other, enthusiastic, reviews) that is compromised by its designer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome & very well written for the average/new builder
This book got me back in the garage hacking and building instead of sitting in front of the tv. Yes, you can find all of the materials needed to build these and other kinds of bikes, even in the UK. One bike builder in the UK wrote, "Electrical conduit is thin wall steel tube. In the UK it is also available as ERW (electrical resistance welded) steel tube. It is usually about 16 SWG or about 1.6mm wall thickness."
5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to weird bike construction
As I said in the title, this boock is a good introduction to weird bike construction. Usefull hints and technical tips specially for beginers. I recomend itanyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on custom bike building
If you at all mechanically inclined and love to build things, this is a great book!Even if you have never welded or worked on a bike before, this book gives you step by step instuctions on all aspects. It also includes detailed plans on some really cool bikes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Riders
I recently started commuting to work via bicycle. The only route I can take is quite busy, so I started out by riding on the sidewalks and nervously dodging all the cars turning right in front of me.The sidewalks were covered in trash and debris, and I had to maneuver around pedestrians too. After reading Effective Cycling, I ride in the street, with more confidence and fewer problems, and I arrive at work much faster.I highly recommend Effective Cycling for anyone who regularly rides his/her bike in an urban setting or wishes to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice backed up by good analysis
John Forester not only defined and developed the system of scientifically-based instruction in traffic cycling; he compiled and analyzed the data to back up his recommendations. This book provides not only the instruction, but the background information, and so it is a valuable reference in advocacy. Many cyclists report that this book transforms their style of riding, just as a good course in water safety changes fear of the water into confident knowledge. That was this reviewer's experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars A godsend: how to ENJOY cycling safely in traffic!
I found this book to be nothing short of a godsend. With over 30 years of cycling experience, I felt comfortable and competent cycling in traffic, at least in most circumstances. But this book was recommended so many times, I decided to read it anyway. At first, it didn't seem like a big deal.It all made sense, and seemed to describe how I already rode, perhaps with a few subtle differences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Newbie Needing Help
As a kid growing up, I rode bikes all the time. However, when I received my drivers license, I put the bikes away. Some 25 years later I decided to ride again.I bought a new bike and it wasn't long before it needed a little maintenance.Instead of carrying it to the bike shop, I bought this book.It more than paid for itself with the first tuning of my rear derailleur.Since then, I've made adjustments to the front derailleur and rear brakes.I'm sure I could have found this info on the net. But, it's really handy to just be able to pick up this reference book and find what you need.I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to maintain their own bike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clear and precise
This book is a great little gem.It is extremely readable and provides just enough information to get the job done without overwhelming the reader with an excessive amount of information. The pictures are well done and there is always exact information about what tools you will need.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!
Before I read this book, I would stare blankly at my bike and never had any clue how it worked. After I started to read it, every little part of the bike took shape and I began to understand how everything fit together, how all the components were made, and how to diagnose problems with them.I started fixing and upgrading my bike, bought a couple of old bikes and refurbished them, and just had a great time doing all of it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I like fixing and modifying bikes almost as much as I love riding them.I have an extensive toolset and can perform many repairs myself.So..... around 2001 I received this book as a gift and thought that it would be comprehensive and high quality because Bicycling magazine published it.I was very disappointed. --It is poorly organized and indexed. --Most components shown are from the early to mid-1990s. Coverage of modern components (carbon fibre, gripshift, aerobars, areowheels, hydralic brakes, v-brakes, sealed bearings, etc) are either missing or very poor. --Drawings are incomplete. Drawings are used where a picture would be better. --Some pictures are small, unclear, poorly lit, or at weird angles.--Some pictures exist for operations that are very common or clear, while pictures of more complex tasks are missing.--Spelling and grammer errors make it obvious it was not proof-read before publishing.
1-0 out of 5 stars I just wanted to adjust my brakes
This book is poorly organized. The photos are not labeled. There is an exploded view of sidepull brakes but no photo or diagram of the actual brakes and what they look like put together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sutherland's is The Standard!
Most bike shops have a copy of Sutherland's -- and with good reason: it contains a huge amount of useful information. The scope is mostly reference tables, diagnostics, gotchas, and hints. For example,Sutherland's lists bolt circle diameters and subtle variations for mostbrands of cranks and chainrings; it also describes how to diagnose variousproblems with poor shifting, skipping, and so on.Sutherland's is not ahow-to manual, nor an engineering guide like "Bicycles andTricycles" or "The Bicycle Wheel".Nor will it substitutefor one of them. However, there is nothing that will substitute forSutherland's!If you work on bicycles a lot, you will find lots ofinformation to help you do it right and do it quickly. If you work oncustom bikes (mixed parts), unusual bikes (parts with odd construction ordimensions) or old bikes (hard-to-find and unfamiliar) parts, you will findit especially useful. You will also enjoy this book if you simply enjoybike part trivia -- a Swiss bottom bracket has the same thread pitch anddiameter as a French bottom bracket, but with the right cup threadreversed.True or false? The answer is in Sutherland's, and is easy tofind.Sutherland's contains 25 years of specifications, experience andhints, collected from many sources ranging from manufacturers to folks whoservice bikes every day.It has lots of time-tested tips on "how todeal with hard problems", frame damage, compatibility, partsubstitutions, and so on.Each new edition has lots of updates for recentchanges in the bike biz.Sutherland's is both authoratative and practical. Sutherland's is well-thought-out right down to the construction -- abinder so it opens flat, you can spread out the pages you need right now,and the pages are heavy paper coated to make them grease-resistant. Sutherland's does not compete with any other book or guide, it is alone. Sutherland's _is_ the standard. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book to have
Nobody knows everything.Every now and then even the most well versed cyclist has some questions.Put those people to the beginners who need to know everything and the sooner the better and you've got the group who will benefit from this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars EVERYONE needs a little help every now and then!
VERY informative little book, I must say. While some of the instructions go a little "over the top", length-wise,(changing a flat tire), it is always feasible to be too"wordy", than not"wordy" enough. Basic maintenance is crucial to enjoying a bike, and to think nothing is going to happen to your bike while riding, is asking for trouble. This book should be standard reading for all bike enthusiasts....mountain AND road. It answers most of the beginning cyclist's questions with easy to read text. Even seasoned "veterans" will appreciate the full spectrum of subjects included in this paperback.

5-0 out of 5 stars Focuses especially upon the past 100 years
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, The Dancing Chain is the in-depth story of the history and development of the Derailleur Bicycle. The Dancing Chain offers the culmination of 10 years of research - 5 poured into the first edition, and now another 5 into the second, and focuses especially upon the past 100 years. Black-and-white photographs and illustrations reveal how bicycles adapted to the challenges of traveling faster on level ground and climbing better uphill. The Dancing Chain does not shy from technical detail, yet remains informatively accessible to the lay reader making it a fascinating resource for leisure reading, as well as hard research for academia. Highly recommended for bicycle enthusiasts and historians alike.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money - There are better books
After reviewing this book I was very disappointed. The title should have been "just another picture book of a few guys bikes". The title "standard catalog" is very deceiving. The content does not even scratch the surface of the vast array of of bicycles built by Schwinn down thru the years. There are no charts of models built, no production numbers, no serial numbers, really nothing in the way of valuable information to the collector. Nothing more than pictures of a select few bicycles and some cheesy history thrown in for copy. Even my untrained eye spotted several inaccuracies in the pictures of the restored bicycles shown.
