4-0 out of 5 stars Rubin Cartert, the true story - it's not enough to see the movie
If you have seen "The Hurricane" motion picture, starring Denzel Washington (an amazing peformance), surely you'd think that you know everything there is to know about Rubin Carter. Unfortunately, that's incorrect. Furthermore, it's not even close.
5-0 out of 5 stars A True Account
I bought this book my sophomore year of high school and that was over 7 years ago.It has literally been my bible to life.Rubin and his book have changed my life more than anything else I have ever encountered.Too often than not we find false heroes in this world.People like Paris Hilton who some look up to as a hero or a role model, but the true heroes in this life are often over looked or never seen at all.Rubin Carter is a true hero, I have never even heard of such a troubled life an to come out on top both a champion of his sport and one in life.A wise man told me once that it is now how we live this life but what we do during it.If your looking for a uplifting book of a true hero an a book that will give you strength when all doubt you, this is the one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Touching
Obviously no one can write his story better than Rubin himself. This story is both and inspiring story of a man who has never stopped fighting and a terrifying reality check into the American judicial system. This book is filled with an anger that is only kept in check by the author's own love and compassion.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Written with love.
Hi,very well written. Most techniques down to very fine detail.Excellent insights, tips, and good instruction of combinations.Only gripe is that there were not good enough pictures to match excellent writing.Always rereading bits to help with my training. As always, a book is no substitute for practise.Cheers

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny
As said before me this book lives up to its title. It is very complete, the author talks extensivly not only on every aspect of kickboxing I've ever heard of, but also of many I haven't. The book is easy to understand and the author has a unique style of writing and organization that keeps you interested. This is one of the best martial art books I've ever owned.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well-rounded compilation of facts
The collaborative work of martial arts experts Martina Sprague (kickboxing, modern freestyle, Kenpo karate) and Keith Livingston (kickboxing, Tae Kwon-Do, Kenpo Karate, boxing, Aikido, Ju-Jitsu, and former I.K.A. light heavyweight Rock Mountain champion), Complete Kickboxing is a "martial arts student friendly" instructional guide and reference for kickboxing techniques, concepts, sparring exercises and competition strategies. Beginning with the fundamentals of movement, stance, punching and kicking, and progressing to instructions on more advanced jump kicks and sweeps, strategies for short and long range fighting, outsmarting one's opponent, and the business mechanics of competition in the professional ring, Complete Kickboxing is an indispensible resource for novice and career kickboxers alike. A well-rounded compilation of facts, advice, and insight efficiently organized for improving one's skill and strengthening weaknesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is boxing at it's best!
This book is one of the most inspirational and moving books I have ever read because IT IS TRUE!!The name "Teddy Atlas" is synonymous with "Tough" and as you read in the book, you learned how he got the scar on his face. What people don't know about Teddy is that under that tough exterior, is one of the kindest and most generous people walking the earth. He is tough, but he has "walked the walked" and "talked the talk".It's a shame there aren't more people in the world like Teddy because this world would be a MUCH better place to live. The struggles he faced in his life made him the man he is today.I find him to be much more motivational and inspiring than any therapist because his lessons were learned from "The School of Hard Knox."It's so much easier for us to relate to someone "real", who had a rough life making bad decisions, but in the end, it's the hard times that made him a success. This is not like some line out of a Hollywood movie. It took a tremendous amount of guts and heart to expose his vulnerabilities, but we are after all, only human. There is a lesson to be learned from this book and I recommemend this book to the younger generation because I guarantee that there are plenty of kids out there, who could relate to Teddy's story and say "Hey, this sounds just like my life".If Teddy's story can help one person turn his/her life around, then he (Teddy) has served his purpose as not only the best Trainer of our time, but as a great mentor and author! You are the Best!Keep up the great work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly Decent Bio....
....about someone you never heard of. If you want to know what boxing is relly about, then it's a must. Teddy Atlas has some fascinating things to say about the nature of fear that makes the whole book worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. Teddy has a big heart and is also crazy!
This is an excellent book for boxing and non-boxing fans alike. It also explains what happened with Mike Tyson. Teddy was Tyson's original trainer. I read this book in a few days. Couldn't put it down. Nice job on the book Teddy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A shame he was discoverd so late in life
F.X Toole exemplifies a point that I often attempt to share with friends that are sports fans..... boxing literature is of the only sport that continually thrusts characters raw, frightening yet lovable at us at every level.Baseball lore and lyric is always an interesting personal deversion, particulairly on a cold winter's night. But I follow and enjoy Baseball as a sport.Boxing, as seen on TV on the other hand, is an undertaking which has taken a barbaric back- seat....too ruthless, savage and lacking star power. However, when written about well and with an insiders' viewpoint, Boxing jumps off the page and into my heart.Ponud For Pound carries a great deal of pathos, and some really cool jargon....makes me feel like I had a stogie and a fedora and a rolled up program in my hand.Enjoy this book...I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unfinished Masterpiece
'Pound for Pound' gives us a brief glimpse into one man's artistic greatness. This book takes some of the themes from 'Rope Burns' and expands upon them at much greater depth. Rather than being a story about boxing, this is a book that examines the nature of grief for the lost, devotion to the living, and the hopes of one's wildest dreams.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
I loved this book. Initially, for the first fifty pages or so, I was fearful that I had selected a book only about the art of boxing. It isn't this at all. It's the story of friendship, loyalty, love, dishonesty, greed, and most of all folks with dreams shattered and fulfilled. The characters are real. This reader could empathize with Dan's losses and subsequent depression and rejoice when he begins to live again. As a female, I am not an avid fan of any sport, but enjoyed this novel immensely. This theme may lead one to believe it's exclusively a 'guy' book- not so. I chose this book because the author wrote Million Dollar Baby, an acclaimed film I haven't seen. BRAVO, F.X. Toole, may you rest in peace." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Training Course!
I bought the book and the DVD and I am thoroughly impressed with the level of detail Alan goes to in both. Anyone who has seen a demo of Alan hitting the speed bag knows he is exceptional at this skill, but what became clear to me after reading the book and watching the DVD is that he is equally skilled at teaching novices how to master the techniques and nuances of the speed bag.
5-0 out of 5 stars Put A Little Rythm In Your Workout!
I was trained to hit a Speedbag by my ex- Father-in- Law Raliegh Martin, when I was in my twenties. He also taught me street stuff he had picked up through life.Very different to the Taekwondo and wrestling I had previously studied. He began boxing at twelve years of age and boxed eleven years in the Navy, and he also learned Navy Jujitsu. My Ex-Father-In-Law used to take nitroglicerin pills after we worked out, but when his daughter and her mother would go to town we always forgot about any health problems or pain.He was disappointed when his daughter decided it was too much of a strain on his heart. He told me that his brother George was more skilled than he was, but that they both could hit a speedbag fast years prior.Well, that was years before I knew him.I have seldom seen anything close to what Alan Kahn shows you in his videos. The book breaks down the details of what you see in the videos.Your hands will know what to do when you include the speedbag in your workout, and you will know a real confidence!5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely, THE bible of speed bag training...
The speedbag has always been the most technically baffling devices for boxing for me. I could never figure out how to hit the bag, the timing, and how to control it. But after reading this book, I have alot more confidence in my speedbag training. Alan definitely breaks down the do's and dont's to speedbag training right down from equipment to proper punching technique. He gives little tips on the advantages/disadvantes of wall speedbag platforms and freestanding platforms, s-hook/chain link swivels, speedbag covers, etc. He also deals quite a bit on proper safety and common injuries associated with speed bag training. Definitely answers alot of questions for those wanting to buy their first speedbag set. In his techniques section, he goes over all the basic punch/elbow combinations, their rhythms, and how to flow from one technique to the next. Let me tell you, the first four chapters deal mostly with basics but the later chapters are filled with different punch combinations that everyone from beginner to advanced people will be challenged. And he really does create an interesting technique of blending music like reading to his speedbag sets. At first it might seem daunting, but if you really do spend time in his techniques section, which he recommends, you'll be able to read and follow his routines like second nature. Near the end of his book, he'll also include some applications for the martial artist as well as setups on different workout devices like a stationary bike to include speedbag training. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it as a must buy for the basic boxing fan to the regular fitness enthusiast. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding... clear and consise... perfect pictures and easy to understand analysis...
I'll begin by stating that I'm not strictly a western boxer, I'm mainly practice Muay Thai kickboxing... but I figured since most of Muay Thai is western boxing from the waist up, that I should get a book on the subject of boxing.I have bought quite a few books on everything from grapling, kickboxing, kung-fu, Kali/escrima and this book is by far the best instructional resource I have ever come across.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing...
No word of a lie, this book helped me on my way in becoming the amateur boxing champion in my hometown of Alvin, Texas.A great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 boxing instructional book!
Once again, Mark Hatmaker has taken a subject and not only excellently explained the "how", but also the "why" as well."Boxing Mastery" is exactly that: both a "how to" and "why for" book.

2-0 out of 5 stars No Surprises
Often seeing a ***** film leads me to seek further pleasure in reading the book upon which the film was based. Unfortunately, this book adds little and would more aptly be called a narrative script of the film. - Anita Madsen

5-0 out of 5 stars Cinderella Man
I really liked the book. It caught my attention alot in the story. I found myself not being able to put the book down. I liked Jim out of all the characters, because he was the fighter, and he showed a lot of determindation and fighting skills. I liked the ending because he came back and beat Baer, who was supposed to "Kill him". It was a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A knockout
Let's get this out of the way right of the bat: To say Million Dollar Baby: Stories From The Corner is a book about boxing is akin to saying Moby Dick is a book about fishing. It touches on the truth but misses the point entirely.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not a knockout, but worth a read
I can't say I find Toole's writing to be flawless; he strikes me as someone who had a hard time presenting more than one fascinating character per story. But there are certainly some vivid, wonderful moments here, and the detail - about boxing and about life on the fringes of society - is certainly memorable.
1-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I wouldn't recommend this book at all for one your better off going to see the movie because the book tells a whole bunch of different stories which leads you in different storis instead of just talking about the same thing the whole movie. I would just recommed seeing the movie over the book. ... Read more

I haven't had time to read the book yet but it arrived very quickly, wich pleased me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
If you liked the movie you will love the book. The book goes into much greater detail about the man and the time period. Also, if you want to know more about Max B. you will not be disappointed. He was unfairly shown in the movie as a one dimensional bad guy.
4-0 out of 5 stars Admiring tribute to a great comeback fighter
James J. Braddock wasn't a great Heavyweight Champ; he lost the title in his first defense bout after he'd won it. But his is, perhaps, the greatest comeback story of 20th century pugilism. The CINDERELLA MAN had heart.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
The author packs an awful lot of information into the text; there's hardly any gratuitous fluff. She covers basic boxing equipment, how to wrap the hands (three different ways shown), basic stance & footwork, basic punches & combos, very basic defense, different styles & ring strategy, and physical training. That last part is given the most space in the book. That's what makes the book a little confusing; it's hard to tell if the author is trying to produce another "boxercise" book (as advertising indicates: "The Ultimate Workout!") or is trying to give an introduction to fight training. If it's the former, there's a lot of unneccessary sections on strategy & equipment that someone just doing a routine for excercise wouldn't need; if it's the latter, there's really not much info on the psychology of a fighter, on having the discipline to train for a fight, on finding the right gym & living the fighter's life. While the author highlights some very important points and corrects common mistakes that begginers make as she goes along, I just get the sense that in trying to cater to both the "I don't want to be hit" gym rat and the "where's the ring, lemme fight" potential boxer, she ends up taking away a little from both.Speaking as a martial artist and someone who trains for fights, I'd still recomend this book to anyone who wanted to learn the basics of boxing for fighting (and learn them WELL), or someone who wants to add a little recreational boxing into their workout routine. It could easily be a textbook for the physical aspects of boxing training, though I'd prefer Mark Hatmaker's "Boxing Mastery" for a concentration on the fight game and Ned Beaumont's "Championship Streetfighting" for the use of boxing in self-defense.

1-0 out of 5 stars Put down the book and pick up the gloves
I picked this book up in the city library because I've boxed as an amateur for a few years. Understanding that this book only covered the basics, I was still disappointed. The outline of different training exercises was practical, but the notion that anyone could learn anything about stance; positioning and correct form from a book is simply stupid.

In 1979, Lesra, a 16-year-old African American boy from an impoverished Brooklyn neighborhood, befriended three thirtysomething Canadians in the borough on business. The boy, whom the Canadians flew to Toronto to visit them, had led a life so far from the comforts of nature that he stumbled trying to walking on a lawn. Charmed by the exuberant and obviously intelligent Lesra (Lazarus), and aware that without decent health care, a safe environment, or an education he would have little or no hope of success in his dangerous neighborhood, this exceptional group of people invited him to live with and be educated by them. Lesra thrived under their watch--but the story of Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Story ...Told Not So Well
I really enjoyed the Ruber Carter biography The 16th Round. Carter is an amazing writer and he has an amazing life story. I figured this book would be sort of a follow up to his book taking us from incarceration in the end of 16th Round to freedom in Lazarus...
3-0 out of 5 stars Fair treatment of two great stories
This book is not as well-written as some of the other books out there, but the stories it tackles are certainly interesting.
4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Lives
Two stories in one book, the first part about a young man named Lesra (short for Lazarus) and then the full history of Rubin Carter known as the Hurricane, a black American framed for a crime he never committed and wrongfully imprisoned.A third influence which shadows both stories is a group of people known as the Canadians, their motivations are not revealed to the reader yet without the actions taken by these Canadians the stories with happy endings told in this book would not have been possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Lives Inextricably Entwined
Dave Kindred has done lovers of sports and history a favor with Sound and Fury.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cosell and Ali-Media darlings
Sound and Fury (14 hours, 11 cds, unabridged, Blackstone Audio) is a duel biography of Howard Cosell and Mohammed Ali.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Odd Couple
David Kindred has written what amounts to a duel biography of the controversial odd couple that is Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell. The author tells us that Ali elected to not join the military because the Muslim Nation told him not to.To cross them was to literary toy with his life. The assassination of Malcolm X being used as an example. While not necessarily agreeing with Ali's decision Cosell supported Ali stating that taking his heavyweight championship away from him without any semblance of due process was completely wrong. There appears to be evidence that Cosell may have already been experiencing dementia when he came out with his second book entitled I Never Played the Game.Aware of the criticism in his book of his cronies in the TV booth for Monday Night Football Cosell was asked before publication whether he wanted to include these strong opinions.Since he always prided himself on telling it "like it is" he felt it would be hypocrisy of him not to do so now.Cosell was a devoted family man while Ali ventured into nocturnal delights. It was hard for sports fans to be neutral in regard to either of these men, but boxing was the ingredient that brought these two men together first in mutural respect and then in friendship.Incidentally, page 247 has a hilarious anecdote of Howard using his colorful vocabulary in breaking up fisticuffs involving teens in Kansas City.Whether you are a fan of either man or the part they played in sports you will find this to be an extremely enjoyable book to read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward & simple approach that produces real skills
This book works. It lays down a solid foundation. The exercises and practice drills continually produce and reinforce positions that the practitioner will appreciate later on.Its subtle but it will become quite apparent IF one does exactly as the book says.A good place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best how to box book available
The American Martial Art is the most comprehensive boxing book now available. It covers all the basic punches, and defenses. However, I enjoyed the sugggested workouts covering the heavy bag work, shadow boxxing and counterpunching. No other book I have seen covers counterpunching in any detail. This book offers several counterpunch workouts. Anyone one who puts in the time and effort and completes the 12 week course offered in The American Martial Art, will become a much better boxer. I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Basic Introduction to a Great Sport / Art
The book gives a basic outline of the great American art of self-defense, Boxing. The author introduces the foundation to the necessary basics to train and compete, if desired. Yet, boxing is a hands on sport that must be physically executed to truly learn. A book can serve as a guide or to attempt to enlighten one to the basics, but without a coach or sparring partner it can never be understood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never count yourself out!
This book is great, but sad. For anyone to lose their morther at such a young age is devastataing. Johnny wanted to give up at times, but his wife never counted him out. A compassionate book with the attitude that says "always get back on your feet, no matter what."
