Makes drivers more human
For Nascar fans like me Poole takes us behind the scenes and gives us some idea of what the drivers are like. Beware that the stories arent all comical or anything like that. But if you're into racing, it provides a depth that humanizes the drivers, warts included.

Cover art & title are a little misleading
This is a pretty good book, but not if you're expecting stories from the current era of NASCAR stars, for example, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.Most of the stories relate to the older stars, and that's fine, but considering the cover art and the lead in for the title, I expected a little more of the "new" and a lilttle less of the "old" stories. ... Excellent undergraduate sport psychology textbook!
I used this book in my undergraduate and on-line graduate course in sport psychology since the first edition. This text does a good job of explaining theories and and describing sport psychology applications. Weinberg and Gould have developed a well organized, resourceful, and easy-to-read book that my students have enjoyed reading. College professors, this book has excellent ancillary materials.

How To vs. Can Do

This book was written in the early eighties, and it shows. There is some valuable information, but it is aimed at the sheet metal shaping world- for instance, how to put compound curves into metal.

Incredibly motivating!
This was an interesting and informative read. I quite enjoyed it. I never was the type to pick up a fitness book but i am glad I did. This book explains diet, it motivates and allows anyone to realize their goals for their bodies (ie. health, self-concept, and self-confidence, etc.). I would recommend it to anyone as I could not put it down at night and have carried it everywhere for the last two weeks.
Wonderful resource
I am starting a running program after a 15 year break, and I have read many books on the safest way to start (old bones you know).I found this book reassuring that I can start running again (in my 30's) and run injury free well into my life.I don't run fast, but I do it at least 4 times a week.The walk/run program is a great place to start and the author does include info on race training.I would definitely reccommend this to anyone interested in beginning a running program.

Excellent and motivating book!
After reading a variety of books on running, I like Kowalchik's work best as my guide and reference.She covers a wide variety of topics of interest to beginners and established runners (see the table of contents) and provides thorough explanations.She also includes a strength training program and a series of stretches similar to that used by my college cross country coach, and, training programs to attain particular goals and/or races.The book's tone is motivating and empowering.I highly recommend it. ... I've done a lot of sports in my life, and have only rarely been given any guidance by coaches about how to address the issue of nerves, tension, relaxation, focus, and playing my best physical game while my mental side was going crazy with the tension of the moment. It's no easy task, but Jeff Greenwald's "Fearless Tennis" finally tackles a subject that affects all of us who play the game, any game for that matter. Relaxing and hitting our best stuff under the pressure of a match, at any level, has always been elusive at best. It's obvious when your hear this CD, that Jeff has "been there". His professional experience on the tour gives credence to his insights on how the pressure of a match can undermine so devastatingly our ability to hit the ball like we do when it doesn't count. I think Jeff has done us all a great service by combining his extensive match experience, knowledge of the game,and advanced psychological training to produce this CD.I feel like Jeff has lifted a real load of mental anguish off my shoulders every time I walk on a court. This is a great book
Whether you be a beginner, a recreational player, of any age, or a professional tennis player this is a book people at all levels of ability will want to read.It is a great book for anyone who likes to play tennis.Dr. Murray writes very well and his insights on the mental aspects of the game, which are so important, will help all of us play better tennis.

Mental equipment is truly important
Mr. Murray does an excellent job of proving that "mental equipment" is helpful and beneficial to your game. I truly believe that you can't operate to your fullest physically without aid from the mental side of the game. The only thing that I was less than satisfied with is that he dedicates majority of his book to illustrate how mental equipment is important, but offers little assistance in improving your mental equipment. He uses excellent examples and truly illustrates his point clearly and directly. As for tips on how to improve your mental equipment, he has only offered about 1-2 pages worth of advice. For example, he spends 32 out of 34 pages of the chapter on attentional control, explaining the different types of attentional control, the problems with attention (such as:excessive stress, choking, etc.), and also explains how having selective attention and concentration is highly useful. He goes on to tell you the optimal effects of stress on attention. The only problem with all this is that after illustrating all the problems, and explaining where you need to be in terms of attention control, he offeres little advice to explain how to achieve the optimal attention control. In fact, only 2 pages out of 34 were actual advice on how to improve attention control and find that state of effortless effort commonly called the "zone" by tennis players. But, one must give Mr. Murray credit for writing a book on the mental game as very few books are written on this subject effectively. Afterall, isn't the human mind very complex? My suggestion is to buy the book if you want to learn about his philosophy on the mental game of tennis, but if you want advice on how to improve the mental game, then you might be slightly disappointed unless your satisfied with the 2 pages of every chapter dedicated to specific tips for improving.

Excellent and Heart Warming
A must have for any pet lover. This book is so well written and the photographs are beautiful. The stories allow some insight into the private lives of many of NASCAR's greatest drivers, as well as quite a few of the greatest drivers in the history of Stock Car racing. Highly reccommended!

The bible for adventure motorcycling
I read this book and fount a wealth of information about how to organize travels - infos that I was unable to find on the web until I bought the book.

Humane horse training
I find the negative review of Monty's book interesting.Since I train dogs, I can somewhat relate to the need for positive training methods.There are always going to be those out there that dispute that it works for MOST, but not for all.Every animal is an individual with feelings and personality of his/her own and baggage that comes along with lack of training, abuse and/or neglect.

Well written fiction?
I read this book when it first hit the bookstores. Shortly thereafter it came to my attention that the author's claims may be mostly fiction. Certainly, it has been proven beyond any doubt that the author did not invent what he calls "join up" and it appears very likely that he learned the procedure from his father who may actually have been a very kind and humane man. There was an expose about the book in Horse & Rider magazine, Feb. 1999, and Time magazine and the San Francisco Examiner also published articles that cast suspicion on the truthfulness of this book. The author's aunt and cousin have published a book that offers alternate testimonies, Horse Whispers & Lies.

GREAT BOOK
This is the best nonfiction book I've ever read. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. Exciting from the beginning to the end. It's amazing how much pressure is on these kids to win. A must read for all football fans.
Excellent writing for a fantastic story
High School Football in Odessa, Texas is the driving force behind the entire city.Businesses close for the games.Everyone in town knows all of the players by name, their personal history, and their stats.The black and white of the Permian Panthers is reflected in every aspect of life from the bumper stickers on cars to the clothes people wear on game day.And nothing is more important than the idea of "Goin' to State."
