5-0 out of 5 stars PEDAL is powered by the NY city streets... deep in the funk.
This DVD is for all those interested in the subculture of bicycles, not just bike messengers or track bikes, but fighting for space with cars/taxi cabs, pedestrians and the police. This documentary is fast paced alongside those in the messenger (outlaw) community, and shows the true grit of the rotten apple. While the book has very little text, the small amount is amazing, and it is covered with beautiful pictures of roudy messengers competing in the Bike Messenger World Championships. A MUST BUY FOR ANY BICYCLE ENTHUSIAST. Definitely worth watching over and over again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference material
This book is excellent consolidation of reference material which is sensibly divided into logical chapters.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to exercise physiology
This book is well-illustrated and easy to read, but it is really a basic text, not the end-all.For example, in the section on nutrition, the authors recommend that carbohydrates should constitute 50% of an athlete's daily calories, and yet they neglect the fact that so many people in thiscountry do not tolerate carbohydrates well.Nutrition really needs to beadjusted to the individual's metabolism and needs, and there is really noone set magic formula that will work for everyone. But, if you keep thatin mind and are looking for a good introductory text, this will serveadmirably.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Exercise Book
A good physiology exercise book is so important to understanding the body and how all of the different systems work together. This book does a great job of explaining concepts by colorful graphics and pictures. If your anadvid athlete like myself you will enjoy this book.I was always chasingthe new fads in exercise or trying the latest diet to trim down, they neverworked. You must first understand some of the complexities of the humanbody.Likewise, if you want to tweak your car's engine you must firstunderstand some of the most basic principles of a car engine before addingexpensive and useless gadgets. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the must useful books of its kind
There are several pool books out there. Some attempt to explain pool deductively: they explain general rules about how balls go and expect you to be able to apply them in any given situation. Other books approach the problem inductively: they show you the most important/useful shots and tell you how to approach them.
5-0 out of 5 stars I still remember those shots after all these years.........
It was the year 1997 that I bought this book in Manila. Since then I'm constantly reading this book while I was playing back home in the Philippines. This book helps me a lot on improving my shot making techniques. I still remember how I made those shots on every game I played with my friends and with other money players I ecountered on every busy billiards halls.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lots and lots of info
This book is amazing. It contains so much information. I have been playing pool for 5 years and I discovered so many shots I did not know before and learned to improve the shots that I thought I did know.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Hokey Stats
If you're a baseball stats junky (like me), how can this not be the perfect book?5-0 out of 5 stars The best baseball reference book
Total Baseball is definitely a must for every baseball fan, from hardcore to casual. And it can be a gateway for many who haven't enjoyed the blessings of this beautiful game. There's everything you need to know: from team histories, great essays on the Negro Leagues. There's stuff for the stat nut as well: from sabermetrics to a handy guide on how to score a game, some insights on Women and Baseball, and of course, the hefty, precise and so accurate register of every player in Major League history. There's even a chapter on International Baseball results, that suprisingly, does NOT include the champions of the Venezuelan League, and does have the Dominican and Mexican team champions. Anyway, all in all, if you love baseball or simply you want to understand baseball, this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars SHH, Here Lies the Librarian
It's 1914 in Hendricks County, Indiana, and Jake and PeeWee McGrath run a garage for those newfangled automobiles. PeeWee, aka Eleanor, doesn't plan to go to high school. She will stay with her older brother and help run the garage, only her brother is a better mechanic. Then four sorority sisters from Butler University in Indianapolis arrive and plan to reopen the town library. Excitement abounds with a rival garage attempting to destroy the McGrath's business and an automobile race that makes NASCAR look like a Sunday drive. If you enjoyed Peck's The Teacher's Funeral, you will love this one. The relationship between Jake and Eleanor is strong and loving. This is a nostalgic and humorous look at the early 20th century.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay read
I looked for this book specifically for a library science assignment, and was excited about reading it.I really wanted to enjoy and like it!However, once I got into it, I found it disjointed with no visible plot. The setting, the early 1900's, is one I'm not sure children will understand. The language often seemed contrived and difficult, with a lot of dialect, and I often had to go back and re-read sections in order to understand what had happened.I wonder if the age group it is intended for will take the time to go back, or put it down for a more comfortable read.Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend this book to my students.Even though there were a few humorous moments, they were few and far between. As my students are fond of saying, "I just don't get it!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Wherein chauffeurs collect library fines
Do you ever get the impression that an author is trying just a little too hard to get the attention of their librarian readers?I don't think this happens much in the world of adult literature, but when it comes to kiddie lit, writers sometimes verge on the shameless. Now I was willing to look past Kimberly Willis Holt's paean to the glory of librarians everywhere in "Part of Me", and the non-fiction true tale of librarian heroism, "Dear Miss Breed" by Joanne Oppenheim could certainly slip by on my watch. But recently I've been doubling back and rereading some of the children's books that came out in early 2006.Of those books, one that I missed early on in the game was Richard Peck's, "Here Lies the Librarian", courtesy of Dial Books.Mr. Peck has written a wham-bam, rock `em, sock `em tale of hard core drag racing librarianship.Though still better (as anyone who reads his books regularly will tell you) than 92% of the schlock printed yearly, Peck's latest venture carries with it the faintest odor of familiarity.Basically, if you perused and enjoyed his previous book, "The Teacher's Funeral", then there's probably little reason to go on to this title as well unless you like to regularly douse yourself in Peck's pleasant wordplay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginner Book
This book immediately draws you in and teaches you the basics. The first few chapters are really easy to read and understand. It does get harder at the end but by then you're hooked. I read this one before moving on the FAA manual. If I had started with the FAA manual I would have been completely lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to fly helicopters
Learning to fly helicopters is an undertaking unlike no other. It is more of a calling, actually. And a huge commitment of time, money, and energy. Mr. Padfield understands this. He knows what it feels like to learn, get scared, become frustrated, and he helps the reader through it all with warm humor and inspiration. The text is clear and readable with many helpful illustrations. This is a great book to read as you study, to refer to as a beginning pilot, or to refresh your memory with. This book is unlike the majority of instructional volumes which are very dry and where the authors either talk down to the reader or lapse into technical jargon. Learning to fly helicopters is fun to read and very helpful
5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, well-written, and an all-around fun book
I read this book before I started my helicopter training justabout two years ago.Since then, I have bought and read just about every book about rotary-wing aircraft that I can get my hands on.This book is fundamental in nature, but fairly complete none the less and an absolute joy to read.I recently read it again and loved it more than when I first picked it up.Of all the helicopter books I have read this one is still by far my favorite. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's more than a game
The main title, "It's Only a Game," is misleading.Jackie Burke, Jr. was born to the golf business. His father was a club pro, Burke, Jr. became a club pro, a tour pro and then co-founder of the Champions Golf Club in Houston, where golfers with only average skills need not apply. From the author's perspective, it's a business, and a serious one at that, not a game.Which is not to say that Jackie's a golf elitist--that would not be true either. The subtitle, "Words of Wisdom from a Lifetime in Golf," is a more accurate reflection of the book's contents, although not everyone is going to agree that all of Jackie's words are wise.Apparently Jackie sat down with Guy Yocom and/or a tape recorder and talked about his life in golf, and Yocom put his thoughts, extended sound bites if you will, together in book form.I particularly liked, and agreed with, his comments about the Ryder Cup and youth golf. And although the author distains the idea of golfing "tips," he gives you plenty, and I think, some very good ones.Others go against the grain.Jackie is not afraid to tell it like he sees it.Overall, a quick, fun, interesting read.I bounced between a two, three and four star rating, and ended up in the middle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miss Molly's review
I must say that this book is a bit more about improving your life than your golf game and Mr.Burke has lead an exceptional life to say the least. The book will improve your game ten fold but you will also look at life a bit different as well.Mr. Burke is a master of teaching about life through the game he so dearly loves.Wisdom abounds through these pages and you will read and re-read most of this whole book.Mr.Burke's dry humor is evident through-out the book which makes this an especially enjoyable read.Do yourself a favor,do not miss out on this man's hard earned wisdom,he did us all a favor by putting it in print. There are not many people in the world that say what everyone's thinking and this man does.He shows courage and unwavering knowledge on the game of golf, but never lets you forget "It's just a Game".

5-0 out of 5 stars Life lessons
Jack Burke has written a book not just for golfers, but for anyone desiring simple lessons of life. It's a fun, quick read, with lots of fascinating golf anecdotes. This book is one you can pick up and read bits at a time...or the whole book in a sitting. But you will find yourself returning to it...reading a chapter just for fun! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amust for every busy sports family
I have owned this book for 1 year and it is well worn. The concepts are easy to understand and make sense. I have loaned this to our swim coaches and the mom of our local High school football star. The recipes are easy to prepare and most important...taste good. I really like the section on Team Dinners...lots of great suggestions. Buy two right away because people borrow this little book all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars This one gets used
This gets more use in our house than any other cookbook .It's very basic and simple.Common sense stuff.I'm not known for my cooking, but this book is easy for me to use and put out quality meals that taste good and that middle school kids will eat.My daughter and her athlete friends are on board (sometimes) with the concept of eating well to improve performance, and they use these recipes themselves.I actually made the granola and it's awesome.

Using this book and some other training I was able to gain the tools needed to finish my AFF and do it in style. After failing my level 4 I needed a boost. After reading this and realizing that a lot of what I was going through was normal, and getting my mind in check, I went out and nailed the rest.I've got 12 jumps now and gaining more confidence all the time. Thanks John!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for Skydivers
Excellent book.Applies to all parts of life, not just sports performance.Gives the best explanation of how your thoughts impact your performance that I have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars ESPECIALLY For Skydivers-and other athletes too
If you are serious about your skydiving, you must get a hold of this book.I'm sure you heard, or read Jack Jeffries' review of this book, he's right.Skydiving, as are other sports, is a mental game.MORE so than other sports because we only have about a minute of "pratice" time, each time we go up.That is important to remember. The author explains simply the techniques and exercises he uses and teaches to fly with proficiency. You'll breeze through it with his plucky attitude, and personal stories that relate to the ideas he teaches you.You won't be disappointed! And like the title says, it will help you in life as well.Mental training is where it's at.Get into the zone and WIN competitions! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An easy, captivating read -
I've never done one of these online reviews before, but this book should get more attention.I wish I always had a book on hand like this, that I was so actively interested in.I would give family a running update on what Larry and Barb were doing at a given point in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to meet her; I considered Barbara my new best friend
Wow, even though this book was written some time ago, I felt a connection to Barbara Savage. She was open about life, and funny too. From the moment I started reading about her adventures I couldn't put the book down.I wish that I had never read the outside back cover of the book, however.

5-0 out of 5 stars The center of being
It has been over 20 years since we read this book._I_ read it in preparation for a 4 month trip through and across western Europe._She_ read it because I recommended it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable for the stories
John Feinstein broke out in the sports-book business with the million-seller 1987 book "Season On the Brink" and he hasn't looked back since. Like clockwork, Feinstein writes one book a year on some facet or another of sports, although clearly his love goes to college basketball and golf.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Repetitive But a Good Read, Nonetheless
Make no mistake: this is not John Feinstein's best work.Other reviewers have correctly pointed out it is repetitive, a bit too long, and he has a tendency to name drop to the point of kissing arse.
5-0 out of 5 stars A slam dunk!

It was written well before I was born and I felt like I had walked some of those same hills, and found some of those same gentleman quail except on the west coast in my youth.A must for those cool nights with a warm fire and a dog at your feet. Share, order two, mail a copyto a friend and let them,Enjoy.........

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
When you read about punching out the lioness with his fist -- you know you've found the mother lode.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of Ruark's best pieces.
An excellent composition of some of Ruark's best work, ignored by other editors. It is a welcome addition to the library of any hunter, especially those of us who appreciate Ruark's genius. ... Read more
