4-0 out of 5 stars I own an earlier version
This book is heavily referenced by Louie Simmons of the Westside Barbell Club in Columbus.
4-0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up!
Some of the topics in the book are quite technical but you'll be able to understand them after a few times of rereading. The book does not show you routines to follow but what it does is show you what methods worked and did not work. This book is for all those who want to understand the science behind strength training. It does not give you a specific program but it equips you with the knowledge on how to develop your own. This book deserves a space in your strength training library and is a must for any serious lifter, coach and athlete.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decades of experience
This book is based on decades of methodically documented training of Russian athletes. Rather than use hypothesis of what training methods SHOULD work, found so commonly in U.S. training literature, what you'll read in this book is scrupulous analysis of what actually worked and what didn't work. There is no equivalent in the U.S. athletic training system; no one has tracked and scientifically analyzed the training of U.S. athletes like the Russians did with their centralized training programs. 4-0 out of 5 stars Science of baseball
It taught you the science behind pitching and hitting a baseball. However it does not make the next step which is how to apply the science of the game to actual play.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great learning
This is a good book for baseball players so they can learn more about how the game is played in technical, and physics way.
4-0 out of 5 stars Jamaal's Advertisement of "The Physics ofBaseball"
This book technically describes the physics of baseball. It contains descriptions of techniques of how you pitch and hit the ball. The book goes into every single detail of what angle the bat could hit the ball.If you are interested in baseball and you think you know the game, you don't because this book provides information that you could not have thought of.For the serious baseball player, I recommend reading this book. ... Editorial Review

Is there a genetic reason that African-Americans dominate professional sports? Even raising the question seems tantamount to heresy. Jon Entine not only raises the question, he strives to answer it in Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly short on substance
There is some interesting information here, but ultimately much of this book is simply a history of African-American athletics, which is not exactly obvious from the book's title.Hey, I'm as interested in the story of Jack Johnson as the next guy, but does the treatment he received really belong in this book?Given that the book weighs in at 400 pages, you've got to wonder what his editor was thinking about some of these anecdotes.
3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title, doesn't even address the topic
After hearing the controversy surrounding this book, I decided to shell out twenty bucks and pick up a copy myself. As a social scientist with a strong interest in racial inequality and identity, and especially as a major sports fan, I figured that this would be a rather intriguing book. It certainly is, but in a different way than which the author/publisher market it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful book
I picked this book up because I run marathons and have become aware of the Kenyan domination of this event. What an eye-opener this book is! Jon Entine has very carefully explained how evolution has shaped different body types. I finally understand population genetics. He doesn't preach and "Taboo" doesn't ignore the cultural impact on sports accomplishments. In fact, if you have little interest in genetics, this book is a gem for understanding the history and travails of the African American athlete in the United States. I was also fascinated by his history of sports in the former Communist East Germany, which built its success on pumping its young women athletes full with performance enhancing durgs. This book is truly indispensible for anyone interested in a balanced look at the range of factors that contribute to the success of athletes. Anyone who suggests this book is "racist" just hasn't read it. It's the opposite -- a thoughtful discussion of why discussing human differences doesn't mean you have to resort to the lowest common denominator. And now I understand why Kenyans and other Eastern and Northern Africans are so dominant in endurance races. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of date and poor scientific methods
Golf club components have changed considerably since this book was published. Many of the conclusions are arrived at through small sample testing (three different lengths of ideal shafts and concluding one of them is ideal) and are inaccurate for today's components. I would recommend anything by Dave Pelz or Tom Wishon rather than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, facts over opinion.
This is a terrific book for those who have been searching for truth about golf clubs. The authors have developed a mathematical model of the golf club and have used computers to analyze innumerable combinations of head speed, center or gravity, club loft, club length, etc. They have come up with an analysis of what is important and what doesn't matter in golf club design. Here's what works for a driver:long (46 inches), low center of gravity, huge club face, unique bulge and roll, and very stiff light shaft. All the other stuff is of no importance, so forget about it.Outstanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars How golf clubs work, in great detail
Werner and Greig have written an excellent book on club design that issuprisingly practical. Each chapter is short and readable. The subjectmatter is directly applicable to playing golf. Golfers who have read Pelzand Hogan will enjoy the combination of analysis and golfing tips. Thegraphs and technical information can be difficult to interpert, but aren'tessential to understanding the key points. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb read with important information
I bought this book after attending a seminar with this extraordinary lady - more on that in a moment. The book is invaluable to ANYONE who wants to eliminate back-pain immediately. Most of us have been told so many times to "stand up straight, don't slouch" that we do precisely the wrong thing, over-arching and putting strain and stress on our back each and every day. With Dr. Bookspans straightforward, no-nonsense approach, you can instantly modify your posture and the pain/ache in your lower back IS GONE!What is deceptive is how easy this is to accomplish and so on first read, you might not totally grasp the concept.Take your time with the book, try each modification and exercise as she clearly explains it, and give it a try.Your first goal should be to stop the pain, your second to start strengthening your abs and back by retraining your daily habits - and let me tell you, you'll thank her for it.As a 40 year old martial arts instructor with 24 years experience, I was fortunate enough to attend one of her seminars. That's where she really works her magic, face to face. She utilized the concepts in her book tochange the way a room full of martial arts instructors and grandmasters live their daily lives. For all of our knowledge and experience, Dr. Bookspan provided a collective epiphany to over 60 veteran martial artists, we were all shaking our heads in amazement and smiling at how good our backs felt. It's practical and it WORKS!To her credit, Dr. Bookspan LIVES her healthy lifestyle philosophy. This book is not very big, nor is Dr. Bookspan - but both are filled with tremendous power and wisdom.Everyone could benefit from the Ab Revolution.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information.
When I received this book in the mail, I wondered why such a thin book was so expensive. It took several re-readings before I got the main point of the book, which was actually so simple that it was no wonder I missed it the first time.Except for the isometric exercise, most of the other exercises outlined in the book are just too difficult for me, and I don't think I am in such bad shape for my age (45 yr. old female).I also think it would have been a lot better if each exercise had it's own picture or picture series, because it was a bit cumbersome to READ all the explanations of how to do everything.Lots of good information on what works, why, and what doesn't and why.I think this author knows what she is talking about, and I am sure that if I met her in person I would like her because she is so sensible in her approach, but a good book editor could have helped to put it all together in a more readable fashion. This book is worth the read and the effort to extract the important message this author is promoting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting new book is a true revolution in ab fitness.
Forget machines and crunches...they promote poor posture and don't teach you to use your abs the way you need for real life. The Ab Revolution is an exciting new training method that will shake up your entire concept of abs and ab training. The Ab Revolution revolutionizes your understanding of what abdominal muscles do (and don't do), and shows you how to transfer fitness and muscular use to daily life not just exercises in a gym. It thoroughly covers the most frequently asked (and misunderstood) aspects of developing ab and core strength for exercise, posture control, and back pain prevention, and teaches how to use your abs and back at the same time for normal daily activities while standing up, from the simplest daily life activities to the most advanced and challenging maneuvers.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Now a bit of why
Golf instruction booklets tend to focus on a series of movements that are either "right" or "wrong", and then set you back on track. Few actually even attempt to go in-depth into why or how things work. This also has something to do with the fact that most golf instructors are not physicists.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's what you know for certain that's not true; that's bad
Some time ago I dicsovered this genius. His work on golf is the best coaching book ever.It is aslo based on research, theory and common sense. No sport has been written about more with little result. This book is the exception.5-0 out of 5 stars There's women and there's golf, and the rest is foolishness
I am now 65.I received the "Physics of Golf" five years ago.I was so taken aback, I put it down for three years. Then I read it one page at a time, experimented with each paragraph, and have improved steadily ever since.Once, in my coordinated youth, I played to an eight. Then in my middle fifties I could not break one hundred if I counted all my shots and penalties.Golf became expensive...and I didn't even show up at the club...Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Academic
I bought this book expecting great things given the FIS and IOC endorsement. What happen was that it forced me to sit down and read critically about my sport. There is alot of worthwhile information here, but there are also a lot of errors. It is very typical of reports about sports written by academics who do not ski.To say that because these scientists could not see "adominal muscules working, in xc skiing therefore they do not contribute to ski skating" shows blunt ignorance of the reality of the sport.Unfortunately, great scientific data is spoiled by wild conclusions based on observation not experience.Buy this book if you are experienced enought to know the difference. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Precious little useful information
I very rarely write reviews, but felt compelled to review this book. This book is basically useless. You will learn precious little to improve your tennis game. It is poorly written, and consists mostly of a lot of hemming and hawing about how few proper scientific studies have been conducted on this or that aspect of tennis. I got a lot more out of Cross & Lindsey's Tecnical Tennis, from the same publisher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, a must have book
This book is divided to two parts. The first part explains the physiology of exercise and how it relates to diabetics. It includes general chapters and chapters dedicated to type 1 and type 2. The premise of the book is that knowledge is power, so knowing what the body does during an exersice is powering you to better manage your diabetes as it relates to exercise. It also has a chapter on nutritional supplements for diabetic athletes. The second half of the book deals with specific sport activities and gives advice on how to change your nutrition or insulin regimes to better accomodate for these activities plus examples from actual athletes. I found this part to be less usefull. However the book is worth its weight in gold just for the first part and is a must have for any diabetic that considers exercise as part of his medication. The book is very well written, full of concise and clear information.

5-0 out of 5 stars great format and advice

Also, provides tables and advice on how to manage your glucose levels depending on sport and type of insulin being used. Great reference and easy reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful information for the new runner
I am an avid exerciser who hates to run.Mr. Nirenstein's principles have kept me on the treadmill, able to run, and motivated. His technique of dropping the feet to the rear has helped me increase my overall speed, and my speed during interval training. The vaulting pole technique has helped me with my imagery.I feel like I have increased circulation.Overall, I would recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful information, especially for the injured runner
I read this book primarily for the chapter on running, so my review pertains only to that subject.1-0 out of 5 stars Poor,,unable to comprehend method.
Being just an average runner, and middle age to boot, I am always reading different books to try to gain some improvement in my running.Lord knows I can use it. After purchasing the book and reading the section on running, it left me so totally confused on what Mr. Nirenstein was trying to say. It has no clear or easy method of explaining his style. I was left absolutely confused and in the dark. And trying to find a websight or email address to send a letter asking for some help is virtually non existent. There is no help available. Thinking maybe it was just me, I had my two college attending daughters, (one an athlete), read the article and try to make sense of it.Negative results. They could not undestand what he is saying. My suggestion is to save your money. ... Read more
