5-0 out of 5 stars A Single Comprehensive Reference!
I bought this book on the recommendation of another reviewer on Amazon. I am very happy that I did. I have other books on the subject, but none of them are as comprehensive and thorough as this one. It is the type of book that you can scan for pertinent topics, or read straight through! Many, many tips for all levels of runners (very good beginner tips), all ages of runner, including stretching tips, yoga postures for warming up and staying limber, how to prepare for various races, and so many other subjects. The writing is clear and concise. Topics covered include: Training, Racing, distance running with various levels and information on how to prepare for each race (mile, 5K, 10K, marathon, etc.), The Psychology of Running, Nutrition, Safety, Sports Medicine, Aging and Exercise, Walking, and Equipment. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Read, for Beginners Too
Although Joan won an Olympic medal and I've only run two 5k races, I found this book to be very useful and informative. Some of the training drills are new to me, most actually, and I plan on using them. She also has a training schedule for everything from your first 10k to your first marathon. The book even touches on 5k races and the mile. I don't know that I'll ever want to train for a marathon, but the book was interesting and inspiring, with Joan's personal experiences mixed in with experts's advice on everything from stretching to buying the right bra.
5-0 out of 5 stars inspiring & practical
I enjoyed the inspirational aspect of Joan's successes and overcoming injury to achieve those successes. This book also motivated me to train harder and use Joan's advice and training programs. She shows us how to balance training with life and be successful in all of it!I highly recommend it to inspire you and take your training to higher levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars A variety of resources
I've found this book to be an excellent basic resource for female runners. I often give it as a gift to runners that I coach, since Samuelson's advice is wonderfully balanced about running and life. While others find it a problem that training advice is mixed with autobiographical info, I found it neither too dry nor too anecdotal. There aren't many good books about women's running--this is one of the best! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sticking to the Basics
This book is great for rugby players of all levels and positions. The chapters are well laid out and offer general instruction and then move on to skills sessions in varying degrees of difficulty. The book gives a great overview on the basics of the game, and winning rugby is all about sticking to the basics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rugby: Steps to Success
This book is incredibly organized. It begins with basic skills, includes drills, troubleshooting in the drills, mistakes usually made, how to correct them, and how to tell if you're doing things right. Each chapterbuilds on what is learned before and gets into more and more complex tasks. It's almost like having a coach right there with you.I highly recommendit for any rubgy captain, coach or player. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Platitudes and Biology
I love running and I love books about running. I have degrees in the sciences and am a self-confessed nerd, having read about fifty books on training how to run. Of all of these, I found *Better Training for Distance Runners* to be the most frustrating.
1-0 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible
Gibberish disguised as science. Get Noakes' Lore of Running if you want sensible speculation based on science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent despite its flaws
This book is tailored toward a small group of people, namely very serious competitive runners who plan to manage a successful running career. It is not for the weekend warrior who runs to lose weight, someone trying to run their first marathon, or attention deficit high school students who get discouraged because of the vast scientific knowledge contained in this book. It is a thoroughly researched, brilliantly done, scientifically based work that is probably the most complete book on competitive running ever compiled. I especially loved the fact of the 800m race being included in the strategy section, as a serious 800/1600m athlete is often left without advice on how to run the half, one of the most challenging yet neglected distance events. If you are serious, OR if you are mainly a 800m and 1600m runner as I am, then buy this book, otherwise purchase the Daniels Running Formula, the other `best' running book ever written. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A nice journal
I have been using a running journal for several years and this is a very nice one.Is it the ultimate one? That is certainly a matter of taste. If this were the ultimate one, it would be structured to accommodate more than one workout in a day, it would be hardcover, and it would be waterproof. And Amazon would be giving them away free.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not what it says
While this training log is a pretty decent one, the "product description" for this item is incorrect. It specifically says that it includes "full color photographs," and it does not. The only "full color photograph" in the log is the cover.I was disappointed upon receiving it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flexible, Inspiring, Roomy, and Informative...THE BEST!
The Ultimate Runner's Journal is easily the best log book on the market.I've tried several other logs, and none come close to providing the amount of space available to write about my runs every day. That's why I'm veryconfused by the previous review--the writer states he wants a lot of roomto write. That's exactly what The Ultimate Runner's Journal provides, sohis criticism is puzzling to say the least. If you don't like pictures(and I don't know too many people who don't like pictures...), then it isvery easy to skip them since they are on their own pages.Maybe what hereally needs is a lined college notebook!Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars good but can be better
The idea of the book is good but the value of the book will further more increase if there were photo's and drawings illustrating how to execute the exercise. Only the explanation is not sufficient it might be difficult to understand

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
The illustrations help a lot. This book is great for club and lower college coaches who can't/ don't have a paid trainer for their program. It is very informative and will help condition to build up your program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Fastpitch Pitching Resource Available
This is by far the best resource for learning the mechanics of windmill pitching. It's great for beginners and advanced pitchers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for an established pitcher
Cheri Kempf has written a fine book for the established female pitcher. She also makes a few attempts to relate her wisdom to the coaching of the beginner, but that is where I find this book most lacking. My daughter just began pitching this year, and I'm really searching for something that gives instruction from day one. Kempf gives numerous drills that are wonderful for correcting mistakes in the established pitcher's form, but I just felt that it lacked the beginning steps that I was looking for.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent mechanics for the fastpitch student
Without a doubt, the finest book I have ever read dealing with the accurate approach for the fastpitch female pitcher. By follwing the detailed analysis that Cheri brings from her many years of experience, one can see the kinetic breakdown of the pitching motion in step by step form. I have picked up many ideas and pointers to use with my daughter, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone serious about the proper mechanics of fastpitch softball pitching. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful fitness competitors
Excellent book with artistic pictures of beautiful women. The text is a little sugary but the pictures more than make up for it. My biggest moan is that the book wasn't longer or the pages bigger....Monica Brant, AprilMoore,...ahhh! Not for those who like grotesquely veined parodies of thefemale form.

2-0 out of 5 stars Weak photography and mostly unattractive women
I was thoroughly unimpressed with the quality of the photography in this book.It seemed fairly lifeless to me.It didn't help that the women in general are not attractive.Even the paper quality of the pages seemed to make the photos even more dull. This ones going to be returned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Beautiful
The photographs are very beautiful, especially those of Ericca Kern. Though not as good as "The Women," it is still very Goode. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A revised version of better runs
When I bought this book I thought it would be a book like better runs but with completely new essays. When I got the book, I noticed that it wasn't really much more than a revised version of Better runs. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the content of this book -- it gives you great running advice. But if you've read Better runs, there's not much new to learn from this book. It does contain some new insights, so it still might be worth the purchase if you enjoy reading Henderson's work.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
This book not only offers training tips, but racing strategies and most important- inspiration. I found the look at the mental side of running to be incredibly motivating, and i couldn't wait to get on my shoes and runout the front door. I re-read parts of it before races, just to keep up mymental fitness as well as my physical. I recommend this to ANY runner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must read, especially for new coaches.
I bought Mike Hebert's book when I first took over the head coaching job at Valley High, and it's difficult to describe how much it helped me. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a limited audience
As the other readers have commented, this isn't a book for everyone.4-0 out of 5 stars Insights and Strategies for Winning Volleyball
Although it appears simple at times, Mike Herbert explains Volleyball as it should be through how it is coached at the collegiate level. More High School and Club Coaches should realize that there is more to Volleyball asdepicted by Mikes experiences. The Game Planning and Coaching Section whichqualitatively evaluates players takes the guess work out of where playersneed to develope. By taking resposibility for how his team performes hedefinitely explains how to teach, scout and understand players which makesthe difference between winning and losing ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not funny at all
I think the other reviewers must be related to the author.I bought this book on a whim and haven't so much as chuckled once.Save your money - or better yet, write your own book based on your personal triathlon experiences... that's all this is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Swim, Bike, Run, Laugh!
If you are looking for what runs in the soul of an Ironman to be...you have the right book.I read this book on my way back from finishing the San Diego 1/2 marathon and could immediately feel the training pains of the author. The training, explaining to my wife the increasing cost of harware I "must have," and the time invested to support my next phase of the triathlon building block - the duathlon hit home.I am where Dave was on "do I swim or drown thoughts".Turning the switch to become a Triathlete let alone a Ironman is a mighty switch to pull. Dave-good for you!Keep it up and one day you may see me - probably at the second transition when you are finishing.Just smile and urge me on; I know it was from the heart.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you hate laughing....don't read this book!
Whether you are a multi-sport enthusiast or not, this book is for you.Everyday so many people do "multi-sport" activities in their daily lives. If you juggle work and kids, if you juggle being a stay at home mom with kids, if you juggle career and volunteer activities, or if you are an amateur or elite triathlete, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!
