5-0 out of 5 stars Cricket is NOTHING like baseball!!!
For years, my West Indies friends have said "Cricket is just like baseball" and I just couldn't get it.Mr. Eastaway does a fantastic job of explaining the terminology and the rules so that I can now watch a match and understand fully what's going on.Mostly I learned not to ask "why they call it that" because, as he says, for some words, there is no logical explanation.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to know about cricket just ask me
I'll be honest I haven't read this book, because I already know all there is to know about cricket, being a cricketer over in Engalnd myself. However I wanted to write something about cricket on amazon, because more people need to understand it.I'm a sport lover in general, in fact I actually watch baseball quite a lot, as we have one channel on terrestrial TV in England that shows MLB matches. But cricket is the original bat and ball game, i'll give you a few pointers on the great game.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic guide for the recently initiated
I had the pleasure of catching two of the five days of an England test match against South Africa at the Oval during a recent holiday in London. As an American and an avid baseball fan, all I had ever heard of cricket was "boring", "incomprehensible" and, yet again, "boring".I found my two days at the Oval fascinating and was fortunate enough to not only have the patience to pay attention to the game during those two days, but also to stumble upon this great book at a bookstore on Fulham.I was even more fortunate to find the book between the two days I attended, read it from cover to cover, and have become a bit of a pest now to my American nonbelieving friends.Cricket is a great sport and if you want the quick and dirty, well here it is.From Googly to Howzhat, it's all here. Now I know enough to pester my Indian neighbors during the next test match.I wish I had this book last year during the World Cup.Great read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Get Ready To Run Faster
This is a great book that was easy to read, with ideas and workouts that were easy to incorporate into my training, racing and nutrition. Before I had this book, I was frequently injured and I had run a half-marathon in two hours. In the nine months since I got the book, I have run a 1:37:51, and then a 1:24:48 and I believe I'll go faster in the future. If you want to run faster and healthier, you should get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Information - Easy to Read
This book provided great information that I could actually apply to my own training and nutrition. It is easy to read and easy to use to plan my workouts.I'm seeing improvement in my running and training is more fun.I'd recommend it for anyone starting out or stuck at a running pace on which they know they can improve.

1-0 out of 5 stars Same old stuff
I would not recommend this book, even for beginners. There is no "new" information in there. You could read all of it in one issue of Runner's World. It was a disappointment and a waste of my time and money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching text
This text was essential in helping me teach our student athletic trainers. It was very well written and should be a model text for every sports medicine/athletic training program. The authors did an uot standing job. By far, the best athletic training text I have ever used.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overall Review of Sports Medicine

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love running, this book will help you keep running without injuries forever
This more like a user's manual. A truly useful reference to everything related to being healthy before, during and after your running session. You will even find tips on how to choose the right shoes for you. Learn how to diagnose any discomfort before it becomes a potential injury.
5-0 out of 5 stars Runners' Repairs
All those little things that are happening either to myself, or to my cross country runners now have some good solid information on treatment and remediation. It is a great help to pinpoint problems for self treatment first rather than see a physician for nagging injuries that will respond to self treatment. It is an easy read but full of information. For example, the neoprene wrap on shoes for runners that have chronic problems with sprained ankles appears to be a clever solution.Good resource, down to earth, practical!

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Advice That Everyone Can Use
A classic.Much better than any gimmicky "Idiots Guide", this Author provides sound advice along with stretching excercises and other tips that will never go out of style.I wish I had this book BEFORE I started running.Since it was published 25 years ago, it could use a couple of MINOR revisions. This would make a great gift for a new runner. ... Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. 5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest mind strengthening book for any endurance athlete
I started reading this book because I was struggling with my bike racing and ironman training. With racing criteriums it involved getting myself ahead in the pack, being worthy of staying in front and preparing physically and mentally for the training load of an ironman triathlon.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all athletes!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a better triathlete. This is the most comprehensive triathlon mental training book I have read and it can benefit triathletes of all levels. This book will help you become a "Prime Triathlete" and gives you important information that you can apply to your training in topics such as motivation, goal setting, positive self-talk, pain management, and making sure triathlon is a healthy part of your life. The quotes, insight, and advise from professional triathles throughout the book are also very effective. This book is a must read for any triathlete!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your ho-hum "in the zone" book.USEFUL STUFF.
FINALLY....a book that DOESN'T dwell on the "zone", "left brain/right brain", visualizations, etc.... That's all pertinet info and great for technical sports (golf, bowling, target shooting, etc...), but when you're turning your guts inside out under the hot summer sun, and you have demons in your head screaming to stop....you need a bit more mental ammo than that.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Year Of Triumph, Tragedy and Learning
Running with the Buffaloes is an outstanding diary of a year in the life of a coach and his harriers, with a focus on - and it is a pair of shoes that has yet to be filled - the "next Pre," Adam Goucher, then a 2000 Olympic hopeful.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for what it reveals
The writing could be better, but Lear does provide a fairly unvarnished look at CU's nominally successful runners--a scrappy program with comparatively little scholarship money to pull in nationwide high school talent. And while many reviewers below have (gushingly) noted how inspirational this book is, I found it had some curious gaps.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting Day to Day, Race by Race Account of a Team Building for the NCAAs
Virtually a day by day training diary forColorado's cross-country team, Lear gives you a runner's perspective of the athletes' minds and bodies as they endure a long aerobic climb of training, building not for big races but for the ultimate end of season race, the NCAA cross-country championship race. Under Wetmore, the team runs long quality runs at altitude with initially aerobic intervals saving anaerobic training for the latter part of the season trying to peak for the great race. The training is individualized based on a runner's fitness and abilities. You get a day to day feel on how the workouts effect and apply to each runner, from Goucher's aggressive training to the more paced training virtually for every one else. As other reviewers note, there is not much detail on scholastic studies, the book is pretty much focused on training and racing. The racing detail is a treat worthy of Track and Field News. The high number of injuries is disconcerting and mars the season and the reasons for the injuries are not completely resolved by books end. There is personal loss with the sudden death of one of their leading runners, Chris Severy and it is pretty amazing that they were able to finish the season with such a loss. Lear also gives you an inside look at recruitment at the minor sports level a more complex challenge due to the balance between woman's sports. Up to the last chapter, you are kept in suspense as to whether CU will pull off the team national championship challenge for a team national championship along with Goucher's quest for the individual title, that's a mystery you have to solve by reading the book. Incidentally, Goucher and Slattery are still top runners at the national level today, including both their CU alum wives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST RUNNING MOTIVATOR
Of all the running books out there, from by-the-numbers training plans to dense physiology tomes, none provide the uplift and motivation needed by average "non-athletic" mortals better than the two written by John Bingham. In his newest, Bingham, long associated with his "Penguin" philosophy through Runner's World Magazine, inspires with his personal story. Only this isn't an Olympic athlete's heroic quest, but an average, vice-ridden everyman's transformation from overweight couch potato to athlete. In a conversational, non-preachy tone, Bingham writes for the majority of runners and fitness walkers-- the back two-thirds of every road race.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wise introduction to running
This is the first work of John Bingham's that I have read, and it was absolutely amazing. He gave me a very realistic, very wise introduction to the sport of running.I tend to overdo things when I get excited about them and burn out after three or four weeks, and thankfully I have a companion with Bingham. His advice has given me the strength and courage to persevere and enjoy the sport of running.A must-read for those beginning to run.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Than I Expected
Bingham's book is much more than I expected.I am a 32 year old who has run off and on since high school.Over the last few years I have been prone to injury and decided that I needed to rethink my running habits. What I expected from Bingham was a brief book with some good motivational passages and some practical tips for adult runners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done!
The Adlers use a qualitative research study w/Peter becoming a participant observer to study the socialization of college athletes and the social psychology of the self. I believe this piece of research is valid research. It saddened me to read what our materialistic world is doing to the young individuals that are recruited for college basketball. It also proved to me that college basketball is about big business, and not really a sport.Unfortunately, it continues today and not only in basketball. Thank you Patricia and Peter for opening our eyes.Anyone interested in knowing the real truth about college athletics should consider reading this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sports Medicine PH D told me I wouldn't be able to run again
A sports medicine PH D told me I wouldn't be able to run again ...but I proved him wrong!! Due to bad calcium deposits, the doctor told me that the pain would grow and grow until I wouldn't be able to run again.5-0 out of 5 stars I Improved Significantly After the First Chapter
The book applies the Feldenkrais method to running in a very logical way.It begins with the big picture, and then focuses on the details. The exercises in this book are well thought out, and WILL make a difference in your running.I noticed a significant improvement after only the first chapter, and I just kept improving with each subsequent chapter. You begin by studying the relationship between the upper and lower body while walking. The shoulders should move in a direction opposite the hips. Most people, myself included, do not do this properly and it affects breathing and everything else involved in running.I spent an evening working on this, and immediately noticed a huge improvement in my running.Breathing suddenly became easier, and my stride became less jarring.Through each chapter, the improvements continued. This book is a must for every runner. It will make all the difference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally free your body
This book takes you through a thorough series of Feldenkrais exercises to open up your movement in your running. He not only shows and tells you how to find a healthy, easy running style, he gets you to feel it.Using theexercises in this book I eliminated knee pain I've had for years andfinally got rid of the pain from an upper back injury no specialist seemedable to fix.I have to say thanks to Jack Heggie for writing this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not only great running tips, but excellent diet advice too
As a triathlete going on my 15th season, I have seen most of the stuff out there. This book is great in that it starts by teaching running technique, which most people ignore. Sure we all know technique is crucial in swimming, but it is in running as well. The author also has a video on his "Evolution" run technique which I have on order.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Coaches and Parents
This book is an easy and enjoyable read; at times you even find yourself smiling at the examples Michael Stabeno uses to illustrate his points. The book is comprehensive as it discusses what ADHD is, common misconceptions of ADHD, communication and coaching strategies, the implications of medication, and parenting tips for the athlete.I appreciated the discussion on perceiving common behavior traits of ADDers as assets rather than liabilities for the athlete. The strategies and tactics he provides are common sense and easily applied. As a parent of a child with a head injury who presents with ADHD-like symptoms, I have found the communication and coaching tips very applicable to life skills...getting ready for school, completing homework or chores. The information is straightforward, thought provoking and useable!I recommend it to all parents and coaches who interact with ADDers of any age.

4-0 out of 5 stars First work focused on needs of ADHD athletes
An excellent introductory study of the issues which affect the ADHD athlete. Very readable. Interesting discussion of interplay between styles of concentration and different sports: eg. in which sports is ADHD an asset or a liability?Emphasizes the important role ofthe coach in giving consistent positive feedback. Gives suggestions re. ways to talk with coaches about ADHD and child's needs. Intriguing discussion of effects of medication on level of play. Summary of ways in whichtechniques aimed at improving the mental game (such as anxiety management or improved focus) can improve performance and enjoyment of their sport for ADHD kids. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read if you want to improve
This is an excellent book for anyone who has already run a marathon and is looking to improve their time. I'm not the fastest runner out there but this book was instrumental in helping me qualify for my first Boston. I have since run 3 Bostons and am able to consistently run 3:20 or so whereas before this book I was struggling for a 3:40. I am about to run Marathon #8 and I continue to use this book as a reference. The schedules are excellent, easy to follow, and broken down by peak mileage and the number of weeks you wish to commit to training. Whether you are looking for a sub 4 or a sub 2:30, there is helpful advice and a training schedule in here for you. Now all you need to do is RUN!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide for serious training
This book was recommended to me by a training partner, and it is well worth the investment. If you are a seasoned marathoner, its got some great information that will undoubtedly help.Whether you follow the schedule to the letter, or use it as a loose guide, you will benefit.I ran my best marathon in 3 years just by taking one simple piece of advice (start your first mile about 30 seconds off your target pace for warmup)

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Books For Fast Marathoners!
This one ranks up there with Daniel's Running Formula as one of my top two running books of all time, I would actually reccomend buying both together as they complement each other very well.

4-0 out of 5 stars great rudimentary read
Marathon for Dummies is an excellent way to acquire a holistic understanding about what to expect/prepare for when running your first marathon. I highly recommend it for beginner marathoners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Has some good info but also some dubious advice
I've run one marathon and am training for my 2nd so I'm not a veteran by any means.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tere Stouffer Drenth knows her stuff
What is Reader from Eastern US talking about? Tere Stouffer Drenth is a 3:06 marathoner, a time she won't brag about but she's a 37-year-old woman, so it puts her in a really elite category. This book has been reviewed by numerous running experts and it does not contain ANY misinformation that could lead to an injury. The fact is Tere did exhaustive research for this book (and tried everything on herself first), so it covers the latest trends in marathon training not outdated information from 10, 20 or 30 years ago.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Athletic Trainers and Coaches...
As a coach, it's very important to know what to do in the event an athlete gets hurt.Since there aren't enough Trainers to go around, I decided to learn as much as I could about acute athletic care.Several Physical Therapists and Athletic Trainers recommended this book to me, and I mustsay, it's every bit as helpful as they said it would be.It givesstep-by-step instructions, excellent diagrams, and great prevention tipssince it is, technically, a textbook. The only thing more helpful thanthis book on the sidelines or in the dugouts is MAYBE an ice-pack.Everycoach should read this book, study this book, and keep this book close byduring practice and game-time.I highly recommend it. ...
