5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning coaches
I am very pleased with this book.Great outline of all aspects of the sport.A must have for beginning coaches and/or parents with kids starting to play lacrosse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lacrosse Newbie
Since it is nearly impossible to find anything in "Lacrosse for Adults" for those who are new to the sport and would love to learn to play, I got this book in the hopes of learning the basics. I haven't had a chance to put the new knowledge to the test in either play or instruction, but it was a very valuable tool for the novice player or coach. GO MAMMOTH! GO OUTLAWS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Helpful
I am the parent of two young boys who are showing an interest in lacrosse and recently signed up for a local youth team.I grew up playing baseball and soccer and did not have any idea how the game of lacrosse is played. This book has given me the knowledge of basic skills that I need to play with my sons now and I can see that its more advanced chapters will be useful for years to come. Although its title suggests that it is geared for coaching, I highly recommend it to any parent who is interested in learning about lacrosse and supporting their children as they become involved with this growing sport. ... Review:The Windmill Pitcher
5-0 out of 5 stars Best material I've used
I have a collection of tapes from various people. It would seem that video would be the best medium for this kind of instruction.Maybe it's because I viewed and re-viewed the tapes so often, but I honestly got more detail out of this book than anything else I've used. The discussion of each piece of the mechanics along with drills I haven't seen on any tape was very, very helpful.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Informative
I keep this book with me all the time during softball season ! I have been coaching for 9 years and and have learned quite a few things from this book. It's nice to be able to go back to it and review. It covers the windmill pitcher from A to Z. Very Very Good ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
I was actually lucky in finding this book. I came upon it while looking for a good sports psychology book and I couldn't have asked for a better one. This book taught me a lot about like and how to go after my dreams. If you are at all interested in gaining that mental edge, whether in sports or daily life this book is for you!
5-0 out of 5 stars A balanced approach
Dan Millman is definetly one of my favorite authors and speakers. Ever since I read his book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, almost 15 years ago, I have gravitated towards his work. I even translated one of his books, The Laws of Spirit, from English to Icelandic a few years back. My review might therefore be tainted with my admiration : )
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starting Book
This is a very solid book to read in your quest of mastery. Not quite the total package. I think the book on Mastery by George Leonard covers the whole realm of mastery a little better. This book does make a couple of great points, like when your practicing a skill to over compensate by doing the complete oppsoite. If your shooting a basketball & keep missing to the right then practice missing a couple to left so you can find balance & make the shot down the middle. This also teaches you mentally to that you can control balance by being unbalanced, which will make help you see being balanced more clearly. A little weird but works. But this is only one of many good points I think Millman gives. Its a great start for mastery & is highly recommend ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Boys Only Need Apply
If you're coaching boys lacrosse, this is the book for you. However, if you're interested in girls or women's lacrosse, don't waste your money here. There's only a few pages on girls rules and even those are skimpy and practically useless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Box Lax book
It is a great book. The only thing though, it should of had some colour pictures and from what I can see the cover has a WLA (Western Lacrosse Association) goal net and there isn't that weird green flooring there is in the NLL on the cover.4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
As a fan of box (indoor) lacrosse, this book helped me to understand the rules of the game when I was still new to the sport. With the growing rate of intrest of box lax in the US and new teams poping up all over the country I think this will be a good thing for the players as well as the NLL(National Lacrosse League). 5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Handbook for High School Fastpitch Coaches
I have coached for over ten years now and have found this book to be the most comprehensive, theoretically sound, user friendly coaching handbook on the market.Veroni has organized the information most effectively using charts and diagrams in addition to her commentary. This is THE book to purchase for both the beginning or experienced high school coach.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Youth Softball - Good Reference
This book is comprehensive and is aimed at the coach of a team consisting of younger or much younger players. Kathy Veroni sounds like a tough, fair, and thorough coach. Imagine driving a group of late-arriving players 10 miles out of town and telling then to jog back to practice. No wonder West Illinois U has a great softball team.5-0 out of 5 stars Great for High School Coaching
This is a very well laid out book and easy to follow.I would highly recommend this book for coaching high school or college age girls.Might be a little deep for younger athetes but could be adapted. Many drills are included in this book, and I found the philosophies especially interesting.Brought out a lot of simple points I had never thought of before. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any serious runner.
This book is excellent and an absolute necessity for anyone seriously interested in competitive running. Noakes covers all of the basics concerning the physiological and psychological aspects of running and presents them in a clear manner. The discussions about stretching, overtraining, and injury are equally useful as a reference.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Cautious Iconoclast
This book is one of the best resources for a runner of a coach that I've come across.Noakes details a diverse sampling of current theories in exercise science, and explains them in a readable and comprehensible fashion.Alongside Daniels' Running Formula, this book is at the head of the pack with regard to allowing the non-scientist to understand research-based explanations concerning running performance.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the final word on all things running
It would be hard to overstate the reach of this landmark tome on running. Noakes has put together, quite simply, THE authoritative resource on all things running. With a stunning level of historical and scientific research, Noakes reviews the entire global history of running, drawing well-reasoned conclusions about sports medicine, psychology, all aspects of training, injury prevention and acheiving the highest level of performance possible. Then he backs these theories up with irrefutable testimonials from the world's best runners of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the pages of a legend
Paul Tergat's life was pretty cool. It was a good book and if you like stories about winners, this one is for you.He had an awesome running career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice bio
I thought this book was a nice bio of Tergat with lots of nice photos. I wish there was a series with all my favorite runners! The writing is not the greatest, but it's readable and interesting. Plenty of quotes from Tergat.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiration for the "human race!"
This is part bio; part running manual and more. On November 6th, 2005 Paul Tergat won the New York Marathon over the reigning champion from South Africa, Hendrick Ramaal and it could hardly have been closer. Some friends of mine were saying, the second guy lost the race still; I thought, hmmmn, what does one say to that? But I am reading this book, chapter 5 speaks of Tergats "eternal" battles with another reknown runner, Haile Gebrsellassie, stating that Paul lost by only a nine hundredth of a second against the Ethiopian at Sydney 2000 and it certainly put that discussion in perspective.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok
at the end of the book i actually disliked Webb. it was a story about someonewho was not patient enough and thougt of himself as above everyone, i actually think him running such great times as a highschooler hurt him,he did not give the coach at michigan a fair chance and found ways to make everything a drama. the part i did enjoy though was reading about the other people from michigan and the fact that chris lear is such a great writer and really connects with the reader.

4-0 out of 5 stars So Much Potential, So Little Patience
In a space of several months in 2001, Alan Webb ran the fastest indoor mile by a U.S. high school athlete and then set a national high school record for the magical distance, breaking a mark that reigned supreme for 36 years by the legendary Jim Ryun.
4-0 out of 5 stars Reaching the PRO's
Alan Webb in this story strikes me as more a baby than a runner who has ran under 4 minutes in the mile. He whines about being hurt and not getting trained right. Warhurst is one of the greatest american distance coaches, if you can't run under him don't run at all. Nate seemed more likeable and more of a team player than Webb did in this book. Being for Illionis I love how Webb lost to Don Sage in 1500 meter final. Towards the end of the book, you knew he was going to quit michigan, now granted Webb has become very big in the sport but for a while he struggled after leaving Michigan and going back to his old coach. Good Book, if you like Webb, you might change your view of him, Nate is awesome, so is Tim Broe ... Read more

Editorial Review

Is there a genetic reason that African-Americans dominate professional sports? Even raising the question seems tantamount to heresy. Jon Entine not only raises the question, he strives to answer it in Read more

Reviews (45)

2-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly short on substance
There is some interesting information here, but ultimately much of this book is simply a history of African-American athletics, which is not exactly obvious from the book's title.Hey, I'm as interested in the story of Jack Johnson as the next guy, but does the treatment he received really belong in this book?Given that the book weighs in at 400 pages, you've got to wonder what his editor was thinking about some of these anecdotes.
3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title, doesn't even address the topic
After hearing the controversy surrounding this book, I decided to shell out twenty bucks and pick up a copy myself. As a social scientist with a strong interest in racial inequality and identity, and especially as a major sports fan, I figured that this would be a rather intriguing book. It certainly is, but in a different way than which the author/publisher market it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful book
I picked this book up because I run marathons and have become aware of the Kenyan domination of this event. What an eye-opener this book is! Jon Entine has very carefully explained how evolution has shaped different body types. I finally understand population genetics. He doesn't preach and "Taboo" doesn't ignore the cultural impact on sports accomplishments. In fact, if you have little interest in genetics, this book is a gem for understanding the history and travails of the African American athlete in the United States. I was also fascinated by his history of sports in the former Communist East Germany, which built its success on pumping its young women athletes full with performance enhancing durgs. This book is truly indispensible for anyone interested in a balanced look at the range of factors that contribute to the success of athletes. Anyone who suggests this book is "racist" just hasn't read it. It's the opposite -- a thoughtful discussion of why discussing human differences doesn't mean you have to resort to the lowest common denominator. And now I understand why Kenyans and other Eastern and Northern Africans are so dominant in endurance races. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but pretty generous
Cerutty was definitely an extraordinary character, but "maker of champions" or any other such label is very generous. Specifically, his antics drove Landy away, which led to Landy actually developing his own training and Cerutty then taking the credit for making the world's fastest man. In other words, he was kinda sleazy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This fascinating biography of the legendary Australian track coach Percy Cerutty, based on his cache of personal writings and interviews with his inner circle, portrays a visionary thinker whose fusion of philosophical, biomechanical, naturalistic, nutritional and motivational theories into a "Stotan" approach to athletics and living remains as compelling today as it was during the peak of his popularity in the 1950s and 1960s.
5-0 out of 5 stars The man who sets the soul on fire
Those who have met him would realize that something has been ignited within them. Regardless of whether those people agree or disagree with him. Their latent wildness is awakened and their fighting instinct is switched on. They become independent as a human being who decides their own path and who does not rely on others.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
If you run, competitively or not, you'll enjoy this book.It shows the level of effort and the perseverance required to attain a goal.I recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Runners
This book is very interesting to read if you like to run, and running is what I like to do.I liked to learn the facts about how running once was in the earlier days to how it is now.I also liked to learn the stories behind the runners who broke the four minute mile mark. You are able to learn that they are just normal people who are able to do something great with their lives. They are able to continue to push themselves to the next level just to be the first person to break four minutes. That is a great thing to achieve because very few people can do it.It was a great book to read you want to read something and learn about running history at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent -like Seabiscuit but about running
This book reminds me a lot of Seabiscuit. Both books read more like novels than non fiction. Both are about events that held the nation (and world's) attention. Both give an interesting look not just at a couple key individuals but a sport as a whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just began and loving it!
I have just started to use this training diary, my 4th week, and it is wonderful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spiral Bound
One of the main reasons I like this diary so much is that it is spiral bound. You can't tell from the Amazon photo. So I keep it open to the week I'm running in to make entries quick.
