4-0 out of 5 stars A Good T-Ball Reference
This was one of the books I chose for my inaugural season as a T-ball coach. In my search for reference material I've found that for as many books as there are out there for all manner of sports, books on T-ball are in short supply...good ones anyway. This book runs through coaching T-ball from beginning to end.Not just on the field stuff but pre-season, pre-game, post-game, parent relations, etc.I doubt just one book will contain all the information that a new coach needs but this one comes pretty close. If your a new coach I'm sure you will find alot in this book that will help to prepare you for the upcoming season. The reason for only 4 stars though is that I would like to see the drills and exercise section enlarged (surely the author, who is the co-founder and president of the T-ball USA association, can come up with more drills or ideas for creative learning than what is presented in this book).Overall...probably the best choice for T-ball reference I could recommend at this time. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The "Ultimate" Starting Point.
Just as you wouldn't start running a road race without the correct shoes, shorts, shirts and gear; you wouldn't want to start running on the trail without first reading this book from the people who have the most experience and have run the greatest variety of courses. This is a great book for the novice to intermediate trail runner who wants to understand how to acquire an intimate and healthy relationship with running off-road.It covers nutrition, techniques, terrain, gear, climate, and much more.If also covers those nasty little surprises like snakes, mountain lions, bears, boars and insects. This guide gives you important abstracts and introductions to heighten your trail running experience; required reading for any beginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for any runner
If you are a runner for nontrivial amount of time, you are very likely to experience some sort of injury already. I did. And I hope I could have bought and read this book before I started running.
5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite "Injury" book todate!
Not only did this book manage to supply the info I needed in enough detail to be meaningful, particularly with the case studies, it was actually an entertaining page-turner.The author had such a human voice and managed to entirely avoid the tone of smarmy condescension that seems to be rampant in books of this sort.I was particularly won over by his willingness to even poke fun at himself as a case study.I certainly came away with a new respect for thefield of podiatry in sports medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I find that this book has been very helpful in my running and triathlon training. The first few chapters are very good, replete with some basic theory about running and remaining injury free.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is Excellent.I use it on a daily basis!
The book is a great for anyone in the exercise field. It is easy to read and straight forward. It covers every aspect of athletic training, rehab, and injury diagnosis.5-0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST for any Athletic Trainer!
I am the Head Athletic Trainer and Professor of Athletic Training Curriculum at a college in Oklahoma City. This is the best text I have ever read which caters to the education of Athletic Trainers. It is the text of choice for my Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries class, as well as a source of reference for any challenge I face within the training room. This book is the "Trainer's Bible" bar none!I personally usedthe eighth edition when studing for the NATABOC exam and have used theninth and tenth editions in my classes.I highly recommend this text foreveryone in the sports medicine field. If you are a Student AthelticTrainer and are debating whether or not to spent the Seventy-somethingdollars for this book. this book will make the difference between pass and fail!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best books an athletic trainer could have
This book is one of the most important books for an athletic trainer. It covers everything that is in each of the 5 different domains of an athletic trainer.Their sections on sports injuries, and treatments are invaluableto anyone who is preparing to sit for the NATA exam.It is fondly termedby those that I know as the "trainer's bible."And that isexactly what it is. ... Written by "Runner's World" magazine's senior writer, this book takes the form of question and answer over a wide range of topics. Simply put, it's a FAQ manual for runners.5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite author
Hal Higdon is my grandfather, and I'd love this book even if it wasn'twritten by him. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Stellar Running Device
Although I considered myself to be a seasoned runner, I knew there was much that I had yet to discover before taking on my first marathon. This book helped incredibly - with everything from nutrition to preventingpotentially painful or debilitating injuries. Though training to run amarathon is most certainly an arduous and daunting task, Higdon's bookhelps to put running into perspective and removes it from the realm of"only the talented can do it."He gives running back to thosewho don't know everything about the sport and are willing to learn.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read
Set just after World War II, Bat 6 addresses racism through the eyes of 12 year old girls.Although it's juvenile literature, the theme of this book is very mature. It should be required reading for pre-adolescents!It's great food for thought and discussion.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Story that Deals with Some Important Themes
Bat 6 is such a great example of point of view in a book. The story is told from many different perspectives that come together to paint the whole picture. The story develops the characters of Aki and Shazam the most, leading up to their confrontation in the game. Wolff makes Aki into a very sympathetic victim, but also creates a sympathetic and complex protagoinst with Shazam. The story exposes shortcomings in religion and in the USA. It provides a great introduction into the Japanese internment during WW2 and racism towards Asian-Americans. It makes a profound statement about the absurdity of war and the need for peace. Also, the story raises moral dilemmas about what is right and wrong. This would be great to integrate elements of thater and character analysis with the teaching. An easy read and fun story that also brings up some important and heavy issues.

2-0 out of 5 stars 6th Grader's Review
This book is about two girl baseball teams. Both teams have a new girl on their team. This story takes place a few years after World War 2. Both teams are really looking forward to the big game, Bat 6. In every chapter different girls from one team talk and give their opinion about the things that happen during the book. One conflict is racism between Americans and Japanese. One character that was interesting to me is Shazam. Shazam is a girl who is on one of the baseball teams. She was interesting to me because of how much racism she had towards Japanese people.

1-0 out of 5 stars Revised Edition is useless
A diary is supposed to allow me to record my personal information.By adding the irrelevant photos and so-called motivational quotes, they have reduced the space for my personal information even further.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good diary, cannot write on flap!!
I am a new multi-sport athlete who LOVES to collect data. This diary is perfect; it doesn't provide tons of space for each day, which forces me to think about what I really want to include. My main complaint - it has an outside flap, on which you are to write your goals and objectives. I have tried many different pens and cannot get any to write on the foolish thing, so I have HALF of each of my goals and objectives on the flap and then they trail off to nothing. Less than motivational!3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but used to be better
I've been using the Inside Triathlon journal for 4 or 5 years, and have been pleased with it.The most recent edition, however, has a new format that I just don't like. The editors stuck goofy pictures at the top of each page, and took space away from the notes section. There is now hardly enough room to even describe my route, let alone describe the workout in any meaningful way.I am so disappointed that I doubt I'll buy this journal again. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars In Depth material
This book may not suit a beginner or first timer triathlete...but after saying that...there are wonderful bits and pieces that would be helpful. But reading it from beginning to end would be too detailed for those just wanting to get to the finish line (I recommend "triathlon 101").
5-0 out of 5 stars Dave Scott's Book has it ALL....
When I first decided to start training for the Half-Ironman, I browsed through Amazon and ordered about 10 different books. This is absolutely one of my favorites.3-0 out of 5 stars Better books out there
In much of this book, there is a very strong emphasis on exactly what worked for Dave Scott. This wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, and in some cases isn't, but I find it more helpful to hear the coach's perspective as opposed to the athelete's perspective. The reason why this is important is because a coach will very often know the difficulties that wide ranges of people face during triathlon training while the athelete really only has to deal with his own challenges. The other thing to note is that the information is a little dated.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine and inspiring book
I'm moved to add my positive review after noticing the negative one by S Hadley.
1-0 out of 5 stars Seems like a rough-draft with missing pages/chapters
The message of this book is simple: if you want to run better, simply run like Haile Gebr. Of course, there's no hint as to how to run like Gebr, but there are pretty pictures and oodles of "ideas" which totally lack any sort of flesh. The book is sporadic, repetitive and offers no useful examples. The concept of a new, almost holistic approach to running is interesting, but almost completely unexplored after the introduction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Have to disagree on the 5 star ratings
As a runner of 15+ marathons, a couple ultras and being an avid trail runner, I really wanted to love this book.Annerino is a compelling character, with great courage and anyone who has regularly run long distance on trail can see, a man who must have incredible commitment. The book however comes up short of where it could have. After the first couple of run descriptions, the rest merely become a repeat of lack of water, tough conditions, danger, exhaustion and route finding problems.Annerino frequently references that his motivation in running these routes is to gain information on how preceding Indian generations would have used them for trade, however with the exception of a small amount of info, that aspect is largely not covered in the book.It is a shame, as dedicating more print space to that objective would greatly enlivened the book.Overall, a good read and still recommended, but I can't go 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A runner's touchstone
I first read "Running Wild" several years ago while recovering from a running injury and it not only gave me the confidence to come back from the injury but also became my running companion. I have since re-read it many times especially before an important race or when the reasons for training get blurry. For a runner it is a spiritual connection to the joy and mystery that running can be as well as historic proof of the origins of American running. John Annerino is an incredible man whose courage and love of the wilderness together with his deep spiritual committment to the land, it's history and it's people make "Running Wild" a masterpiece.

4-0 out of 5 stars Moving Tribute To an Underappreciated Sport
Cross-country is the Rodney Dangerfield of sports in many high schools, overshadowed by the soccer craze and derided as a fall-back for those unable to make the cut in the glamour sports. If more people read "God on the Starting Line" they might see this sport for what it is: a demanding test of willpower, pain tolerance and team cohesiveness played out in a natural setting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bloom's Quest to Make Small School Champs with Interfaith Twist
This a very personal real story of an expert on Track and Field (Bloom) and empty nester with a desire to coach the pure running sport of Cross-Country. Remarkably, his only taker in New Jersey is St. Rose, a private Catholic School. Although Jewish, there is a prompt mutual respect between the team and Bloom. At this point in the book, Bloom has been coaching his team for several years but every summer he faces a challenge in team depth and symptoms of a summer of too little training. With his skeleton team, Bloom develops and gets to know each individual. He works personal motivation, skill in workouts, a touch of psychology and a mix of father figure and teacher together to help guide the boys through life. The book is surprisingly personal as Bloom reveals much of himself, his past and his family along with his own running experiences as he in turn learns about the boys under his tutelage. Bloom acts as a total coach knowing each boy's personality, personal conflicts and athletic needs while providing versatile training that promotes a team running style while also perfecting their training to the course they will run on at the Parochial Class B Championship. There is a great blend of faith as Bloom shares in their prayer before each race, holds a boys crucifix while he runs hoping that rubbing it will power the boy forward and at other times touching his own mezuzah for the same reach of faith and power. The final race is exhilarating as the boys give a tremendous effort and do run as a team as there coach has continual emphasized. Whether they win or not, they run as great heart, each one showing great improvement. The final sprint to the end is exciting as you literally sprint with the coach along the course to see how they finish. Without peeking at the end, you will find their final efforts surpisingly rewarding. Throughout the book, Bloom discusses the issues such as the detrimental effect hard training has on young girls, the effect multi-year sports has had on distance running (particular soccer) and insights to past great runners. The book may be more appealing to the mature runner as it's not all races and training but a look back at Bloom's life from mid life with an introspective look at the boys' lives and future as well. The book will be a treat for those former cross-country runners who enjoyed the simple purity of the sport and who also know that when the summer final cools, making your sweat turn cold, its cross-country season.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book for runners and coaches alike.
God on the Starting Line is an excellent non-fiction book about a NJ high school cross-country team and its coach. Bloom's smooth writing style brings out the joys and heartaches experienced by cross-country coaches and runners everywhere. I have coached x-c at two different Catholic high schools (in NJ and PA)and Bloom's honest description of the day-to-day experiences is very accurate. Bloom makes the reader feel a part of this team and his descriptions are both brutally honest, yet thoughtful for each team member. His race descriptions and training methods can be appreciated by runners, coaches and fans of distance running. Highly recommended! ... Read more

This book helped me out a lot. I play goalie and defense and this book has very helpful sections on both postitions. My firends and I brought this to our team practice and our coach read it and said that he will use all of the drills given to help us out. This is a very good buy and i reccomend it to every beginning and advanced player out there.
