4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book Tarnished by Bias
Although well researched and full of information previously hidden, this book is weakened by a bias for the Shotokan system. For example, the author cites that linear Karate finds its origin in the palace defence system in Okinawa whereas linear Chinese boxing was already evident in the Shaolin temple centuries earlier. The Naha styles are described as a mere form of Chinese boxing not worth of further consideration. Chotoku Kyan is given an unworthy treatment and one wonders if this is because he reverts to a non-linear system. Having said all this, this book is a treasure trove of information, particularly the history of kata and the masters of old.

4-0 out of 5 stars A different way to look at the stories of karate
For a Goju Ryu practitioner this is a very interesting book - providing an insight into Shotokan Karate, a view of how Shotokan Practitioners see Goju Ryu, and providing a way to look at the analysis of our Kata.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, if questionable, look at karate history
In "Shotokan's Secret", Bruce Clayton seeks to understand the environment under which Shotokan's parent art, Shuri-te, originated and developed. He paints a picture of an Okinawa in which every administrator in the royal court was a deadly practitioner of unarmed combat, and brutish Samurai and US Marines were the chief agressors, intent on deposing the puppet king of the island. The descriptions are quite vivid and, if such circumstances are assumed to be true, might very well explain why Shotokan developed as it did, with the emphasis on long-ranged techniques, deep stances, and virtually no grappling.

3-0 out of 5 stars Boys Only Need Apply
If you're coaching boys lacrosse, this is the book for you. However, if you're interested in girls or women's lacrosse, don't waste your money here. There's only a few pages on girls rules and even those are skimpy and practically useless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Box Lax book
It is a great book. The only thing though, it should of had some colour pictures and from what I can see the cover has a WLA (Western Lacrosse Association) goal net and there isn't that weird green flooring there is in the NLL on the cover.4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
As a fan of box (indoor) lacrosse, this book helped me to understand the rules of the game when I was still new to the sport. With the growing rate of intrest of box lax in the US and new teams poping up all over the country I think this will be a good thing for the players as well as the NLL(National Lacrosse League). 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning coaches
I am very pleased with this book.Great outline of all aspects of the sport.A must have for beginning coaches and/or parents with kids starting to play lacrosse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lacrosse Newbie
Since it is nearly impossible to find anything in "Lacrosse for Adults" for those who are new to the sport and would love to learn to play, I got this book in the hopes of learning the basics. I haven't had a chance to put the new knowledge to the test in either play or instruction, but it was a very valuable tool for the novice player or coach. GO MAMMOTH! GO OUTLAWS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Helpful
I am the parent of two young boys who are showing an interest in lacrosse and recently signed up for a local youth team.I grew up playing baseball and soccer and did not have any idea how the game of lacrosse is played. This book has given me the knowledge of basic skills that I need to play with my sons now and I can see that its more advanced chapters will be useful for years to come. Although its title suggests that it is geared for coaching, I highly recommend it to any parent who is interested in learning about lacrosse and supporting their children as they become involved with this growing sport. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Knife Fighting Classic - Good Intermediate Training Manual
"Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat" by Michael D. Echanis was originally published in the late 1970s and developed a `cult following' among martial artists and knife aficionados.
2-0 out of 5 stars FORBIDDEN MALLJITSU TEXT!!!
The late Michael Echanis was a comic genius!I laughed so hard I nearly wet myself, reading this brilliant Malljitsu text regarding the blade arts -- which I have studied for 30 years.
4-0 out of 5 stars A book by a true warrior
The late Mike Echanis was a true warrrior and has written a book for warriors. It is about combat, not sport and demonstrates very advanced knife techniques. These techniques have been proven in battle over centuries. In the Hwa Rang Do system, the knife becomes an extension of the hand. The techniques, although ably demonstrated and photographed, must still be practiced under the guidance of a Hwa Rang Do Master if one is to become proficient. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate History of Lacrosse
There are a few good books out there on lacrosse, but this one should be regarded as the Bible of the sport. If you have a serious passion for lax, you have to read this book from cover to cover. It's thoroughly researched, well-written, thought-provoking and enlightening. The book talks about both field lacrosse in the US and the indoor box game in Canada. It covers lacrosse on Indian reservations and even in the Olympics!! It's a very rich and complex history that really makes you think. It's hard to summarize 150+ years of lacrosse history in this review, so you have to read it for yourself. The book also includes a bunch of neat photos.

1-0 out of 5 stars What was I thinking?
I love lacrosse and was thrilled as I perused this book the first time, but on a recent trip I re-read it and realized I needed to change my review. After a very thorough examination of the book, I came to realize that most of what the author says is merely repetition of the same points he makes in the first chapter. His book takes the view that modern lacrosse exploited native people, and this may be true in his area, but it is not true everywhere else.Lacrosse is played throughout England, Australia and ALL of Canada, not just in the few places Mr. Fisher describes. He fails to note the game's merits and paints it as little more than a muscle-headed goonfest in Canada and an elistist boys club in the Eastern US. I can't believe I missed it the first time around, but Mr. Fisher seems to almost dislike the game whose history he has set out to chronical. He is overly cerebral about a pastime whose greatest assets are merely the fun and camaraderie it involves. His perspective reminds me of the detached and cold hyperbole used by George Will in his book about baseball.Neither Will nor Fisher seem to have considered it important to play the game they describe.Given that Fisher's audience will chiefly be players, coaches and lovers of the game, this seems to me to be a huge error. This book reads like the university thesis it is.I can't believe I lugged it all over Europe!5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
A great work that provides a phenominal amount of historical content. A good book about a great game. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition is Way Better
I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Girls' Lacrosse into the Modern Era
This book is perfect for coaches and players who are new to the game of girls'/women's Lacrosse.Several years ago, when I was recruited to coach my daughter's youth league team, I searched high and low for a book, such as this one, covering the girls' game. I found plenty of books for boy's Lacrosse and a few that had a chapter or two covering girls' Lacrosse.Often, these books covered very outdated techniques and methods.Bottom line, there was no comprehensive guide for teaching and developing young girls into well-rounded Lacrosse players.Coach Tucker's book is a great guide for dad's like me who have men's Lacrosse experience, beginning coaches, new players, and, of course, baffled parents. My favorite section covers the suggested drills. Each drill is clearly defined and well diagramed. She also provides great advice for managing practice and keeping the girls involved and excited about playing lacrosse.I plan to implement many of her suggestions into my practices.A must read for coaches and parents who are interested in developing technically sound players who love the game of girls' Lacrosse. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner!
Another brilliantly woven masterpiece that tells a story of persistence, teamwork, and spirit.Mr. Silverman and Mr. Harrison take us on a journey through a truly inspiring tale about the only black college lacrosse team to compete in the NCAA.Based on a true story, this piece of sports history is a MUST read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Great Story
Ten Bears is a really good book telling a great story.Due to the time difference between its writing and the actual events, there are some artistic licenses taken by the author, but I would argue that it adds to the books character.Mr. Silverman and Mr. Harrison have wound the events of the early seventies in Maryland with the creation of college lacrosse team.I appreciated the reality of the individual character's stories and the resisting by the author's to glamorize their antics. Yes, the team skipped practices and was not always honorable about going to school however, against the backdrop of the social times, their accomplishments are unbelievable. If you are a lacrosse fan, this is a must read.If you enjoy stories about real people, this is a good book telling a great story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Running and Remember the Titans . . . Move Over!
Fascinating piece of social and sports history. The authors combine humor and heart to create a great story about the only black college lacrosse team to ever compete in NCAA.This would make a GREAT movie! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best starting point
I live near rivers and have seen others kayaking all the time and I wanted to know about this fun looking sport. This book lays it all out for you and tells you what you need to know. It starts with the gear you will need and how it works to how to paddle a boat. Armed with this knowledge I took my first class and I felt well prepared. I have now taken three classes and I keep referring back to the book to remind me of proper technics. I am considering buying a boat of my own and the book explains all the different types of boats and their uses for different types of water. I can see this book helping me for awhile as I grow in this great sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking
I picked up my first copy of this book having just paddled with Wayner.I am an advanced paddler but wish I had had this book starting out.It is nice to see all the words we use defined. For those of us who learn by reading this book will be a great first step and for others a welcome refresher. I found the sections on particularly useful. I plan on ordering two more copies for friends who say they want to get into this amazing sport. ... Read more

This book helped me out a lot. I play goalie and defense and this book has very helpful sections on both postitions. My firends and I brought this to our team practice and our coach read it and said that he will use all of the drills given to help us out. This is a very good buy and i reccomend it to every beginning and advanced player out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars good read for overall knowledge of evolution of game
I got this book because I'm an avid lacrosse player and love learning about the roots and evolution of the game. Since I live in Texas where lacrosse isn't nearly as big here as it is in the Northeast, it was interesting to see how the game is played and the culture is so huge at the D1 level. There was too much emphasis on the men's game, however, with only one section devoted to the women's game. But the picture quality was awesome, thanks to Inside Lacrosse magazine, and the layout is also neatly done. Makes for a good coffee-table book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
To my surprise, I found that this book is outdated in many respects, especially in the area of psychopharmacology -- SSRIs are not even mentioned amongst the antidepressants.
5-0 out of 5 stars There's a reason it isn't like the test...
They had me write it before the test even came out!I'm a little surprised it hasn't been updated, since it's 13 years old - but hey, I don't get royalties from this outfit.
4-0 out of 5 stars Helped me, maybe you too
I found the AP Pyschology Review book very helpful. The review was especially helpful - it was clear and concise. And the practice exams - "forget-about-it." The trick is that you have to already know what you are studying before you use the book because afterall, the book is just a review. It should only remind you of what you already know. The book is just brief enough to not cloud your mind and confuse you and is just comprehensive enough to get you everything you need to know. All said and done, I would definately recommend this book to anyone who wants to pass the exam, but beware, you must study too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for teaching kids the history of the game
Lacrosse: The National Game of the Iroquois is a photo-essay telling the story of thirteen-year-old Monte Lyons, who has grown up playing lacrosse. His family is part of the Onondaga Nation and lacrosse is part of their heritage. The book begins by discussing the Onondaga Nation Territory and the six nations of the Iroquois. It then describes the history of lacrosse and its significance to the Onondaga Nation. It also provides some information about how to play the game, including how the field is set up, what positions there are, what equipment is needed, and the skills used. The book mentions that women's lacrosse is somewhat different but does not go into details about the women's version of the game. Also included are a description of how lacrosse sticks are made and a glossary of terms used in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indigenous Game of this land.
It is fortunate to finally hear about the origins of a world class game from the indigneous people who first introduced it to this country.Rarely are the origins of team sports made available to those who play them.In this case, it is revealed how the game of lacrosse is still connected to the cultural integrity of the Haudenosaunee, past, present and future. In turn, the reader also hears an Onondaga voice regarding their history--a voice usually not heard in a public school environment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Juvenile - Great for Kids
Has significant information, but overall, is very child based. As a childen's book, I would give it five stars. If you're looking for any significant information on the game, don't buy this book. If you're looking for something entertaining for your children, I would highly recommend. Personally, I was looking for information for a college thesis, and this book did not really help. If you don't want to buy it new, wait a few days, until mine is offered as used. The people need to know. ... Read more
