Drills, drills, and more drills
Coach Martin is a hoot.I had the pleasure of sitting in a session in a coaches seminar where she was one of the featured speakers.She is energetic, smart, entertaining and knows a whole lot about volleyball.She is the head women's coach at Central Missouri Stat U and has been there since forever. You can never have enough drills!
Peggy Martin's book has been a valuable addition to my arsenal of drills, because I believe a coach can never have access to too many drills. It's important for players to get a feel for a skill by attacking it in a number of different ways, and using several drills in sequence allows players to continue working on the skill without getting bored, which is important to the learning process. This book is straightforward, unlike Complete Conditioning for Volleyball. I know exactly when and how to work out.
New Edition is Way Better
I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out.These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. A very highly recommended manual

I'm trying to help myself and my team improve so I bought this game action drills book. There are no pictures to demonstrate proper stances, only X's and O's. Good basic book, with good perspective
This book is used as the textbook for the first level of the Coaching Accreditation Program for USA Volleyball.It has a good broad perspective on the game, how to motivate and how to teach the skills.It also goes thethrough season and practice planning and breaks down the process in a verybasic manner, which I found very useful. Best Coaching Book Available

Never played volleyball before?
Now I realize that I have had more experience in volleyball then most people but this book was insulting to my intelligence. If you are a knowledgeable player turned coach then don't waste your money. Many of the notions are outdated and many of drills a five year old could invent. This book was written by great volleyball minds, but for some reason it falls short in all areas. If you are a new to this sport as a coach or player then this book is great for you. must read for female athletes, coaches and parents!
if you are a female athlete or you work with female athletes this is a great book for you. it is a quick, easy read, full of personal stories and examples. very motivating, excellent book!

Outstanding book!
Let me just start by saying that I've had this book for 2 years and could never get my daughter and husband to read it. So, on our way to yet anothertourney, I had 5 hours to read it out loud to them. They loved it!My husband is a coach for our local girls softball team, and we had just won the district championship and were going to "state" a couple of weeks later, and my husband liked the book so much that he used it as his "bible" during the practices leading up to the tourney, and also at the tourney.This was our 3rd trip to "state", never having won the championship.But this year we won, due partly to this little book.It's written in conversational form, and is a very easy read, yet it packs a punch.These ideas are great, and implementing them into a "team" picture was easy.They were great team-builders also.Our team was so close during this tourney, and this helped their play.I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone that plays or coaches anything.(Also, this book is not just about sports...the big picture is about girls in general, and how they can achieve their goals by implementing these ideas into their everday lives.)Get this for the girl or coach in your life!

Would rather read a volleyball magazine
This book was not bad.But it was not great either.Don't expect to really get much out of it.Just enjoy the reads and pictures.

Comprehensive Manual
Awesome! It practically covers everything to know about beach volleyball. It is of great value to anyone interested in the sport.It gives a good account of how the sport developed in Europe and USA. A good structural analysis of the game covers a chapter. It is a treasury of techniques, tactics and forms of training. All aspects of training like strategy,skills,speed,strength and conditioning are covered. It is well written and well supplemented with illustrations and color photos. This book is most probably the ultimate Coaches,athlete's and enthusiast's manual. The quality of the book material and the photos are an added bonus.I highly recommend it. ... Read more

good but can be better
The idea of the book is good but the value of the book will further more increase if there were photo's and drawings illustrating how to execute the exercise. Only the explanation is not sufficient it might be difficult to understand

Very informative
The illustrations help a lot. This book is great for club and lower college coaches who can't/ don't have a paid trainer for their program. It is very informative and will help condition to build up your program.

An older guide
I was in search of some resources to guide a brand new coach who isn't all that familiar with the technical details of the game.This book contains lengthy descriptions of the rules and explanations of the different roles each player has on the court.I found all of this helpful.My only complaint is since this is an older book it does not mention rally scoring which is predominatly in use today.The book centers on describing the old 15 point system, and the rules associated with that.I'm glad that it took the time to explain what each job on the court is and so I am happy with my purchase as a whole.

Detailed instruction
Asher's approach of employing experts in each chapter to discuss their respective forte yields a thorough and insightful text.I have upwards of 12 coaching books and this one I think to be the most valuable.

Great book for reference
This book is a revamped version of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Handbook.Like the title of the review suggests, it is a great reference.I find myself going to it a lot in order to refresh mymemory about some technical aspects of the game.

Great Illustrations.
This is a book geared to the player.This will teach the average adult player about the game and expose them to some of the subtleties of the game. If you're at all serious about volleyball you need this book
Excellent drawings, crystal clear explanations. If you want a definitive reference for a variety of offensive and defensive schemes, and drawings that break down all the basic skills in detail, this is the book to buy.

don't waste your time and money
I agree with the last reviewer, this book is way out of date and not worth spending the time reading.And I didn't really like the writing style, either, it felt stilted and it was hard to read--didn't flow, if you know what I mean.If you want to really develop your skills, go for something by someone with real credentials who actually knows what they're talking about. ... A wealth of drills for players at all levels.
I've used Sue Gozanky's book as part of the drill library for our high school program for over 5 years, and I heartily recommend it to all coaches, at any level of play. The ideal book for beginning and veteran coaches

A worthy companion to Kiraly's BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Like Joe Eszterhas, the author of SHOWGIRLS and FLASHDANCE, the parents of Karsh Kiraly emigrated to the US from Hungary, where a repressive regime had limited their rights to work and practice free thought.Kiraly shares with Joe Eszterhas some of the same beliefs in the goodness of America, a land where you can make as much money and accure as much cultural capital as you possibly can.And Kiraly has had it all.In CHAMPIONSHIP VOLLEYBALL it is like having a coach over your shoulder at all times, a coach who is going to teach you to block, bump, pass and spike step by step, with careful diagrams and a consistent "you can do it" attitude. I've been coaching volleyball for 7 years now. This is the best book I've found on skills and strategies. It helped me go from the basics, which is all the farther high school volleyball got when I played, to the advanced game it is today. Easy to read and understand, also.

Nice. Not very thorough. Offers interesting concepts.
The book covers the basic techniques and tactics. It is mostly a description of the author's view of how to play, and less a complete description of the possibilities, implications, pros and cons of thevarious options.Read more
