5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ
When I finished this book, I had a new respect for Judy Nelson. Witheverything that has been said and printed about her she still finds it inherself to let us in and get to know her a little better. Since the onlythings that we really knew before her books, was that she left her husbandand kids for another woman, she took alot of heat for that from both sides, gay and straight. She took even more heat when the two women parted companyand her first book. It takes real strength and character to come throughall of this and still refuse to tear Martina apart like she has done toJudy. I for one really thank Ms. Nelson for her honesty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely "Riveting"
This book was magnificent. If you have ever been in love and lost that love, this is the book you needto read.I have read her first book"Love Match"and it was wonderful, but this book is "double" wonderful. She seems at peace finally and once again happy with her life. And if anyone deserves it, it is Ms. Nelson. She helped me in my time of crisis.I lost someone very special to me, and I read her book. The courage she exemplifies, made me feel like I had a friend to talk to.She is a wonderful person, makes you feel like she is your best friend.I truly hope she writes another wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a book!!!
This book, is a definate for anyone who needs the courage to make difficult choices in their lives. Judy Nelson has become a heroine of mine just for her convictions and her honesty. I really related to her. I read Love Match but found her changed and "still" in this one. I wish she would write more!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must
"Portrait in Motion," essentially a diary kept by Arthur Ashe in 1973 and 1974, captures life on the pro tennis circuit better than any other book I've read. The tour has changed a lot since then, of course, but his description ofweek-to-week ups and downs (most weeks, of course, end with a loss) holds up well. There are plenty of flashes of Ashe's political consciousness as well, but his frank discussion of his agnosticism doesn't quite match the spirituality he describes in later books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable advice if you've never heard it before.
This is one of the two best books on doubles, the other being Blaskower's ART OF DOUBLES. Easy and fun book to read and gain understanding of doubles positions and strategy. It provides the type of training that identifiesyou as a "smart" player. You'll appreciate the thought and mentalpreparation you and your partner gain to help you beat better players.Whywait until you're one set down to try to figure things out on the court, inthe heat of the battle?Think about your optimum plays and positionsbefore you need them. If they sold this book at the tennis clubs the proswould be out of business! Good buy for teams. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I don't understand why the book deserved 5 stars (that misled my purchase), I think that it deserves 2 at most.5-0 out of 5 stars Badminton (Skills of the game) reveiw
From the outset, this book plunges you deep into the wonderful world that is badminton. Mark Golds managed to teach me everything there is to know about the sport, from attacking serves to smashes. Accept no substitute, Mark - former England player - teaches in a way which would get begginers into the game, but at the same time has a learning curve steep enough for experienced players to add tremedously to their game. I now know why badminton is an Olympic sport, and more to the point, what a great game it is. If you are thinking of picking up a raquet for the first time, or are closer to forever hanging it up, this book is a perfect suitor for you, and in my opinion definately deserves the coverted five stars! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Average book is creative but not highly learning-oriented
Reggie has written a creative book with games you may not have heard of (since they are probably not played anywhere much at all except with hisstudents). You could make games on your own, some better and some worse.Unfortunately, this book doesn't really include many teaching or sensiblegames that are frequently played elsewhere. There are also better (moresensible and more fun) games in several other books. But few books forkids emphasize fun and creativity. There should be some learning theoryoutlined so readers understand how children develop and interact. There areno diagrams but there are cartoons which don't give enough information oncourt set-up, etc. Reggie should consult with more teaching pros on bettergames, etc. Other books produced by the USPTA and USPTR (usptr.org anduspta.org) are superior in creativity, drawings, etc - if you can get them. Also Joe Dinoffer (oncourtoffcourt.com) produces some superior (althoughcan be costly for what you get) videos. Check websites. I am a highlyexperienced tennis pro who like Reggie have spoken at many internationalconferences. This book is worthwhile to teaching pros who want somecreativity and inspiration. Parents may find this useful but not forteaching. Still kids should have fun which is the message here!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but to little clear pictures of the exercises.
I think Reggie did a great job when it comes to creativity what the exercises are conserned. The lack of pictures in the book is a shame and those who are present don't say much. It's nice to have an example to show to your students. 5-0 out of 5 stars So Inovative!! I have used these techniques in my classroom!
Being a teacher of students with severe handicaps and a fan of tennis, I have found Mr. Vasquez's book to be revolutionary! His book includes all styles of learning modalities and it reaches out to all children.I have used and adapted Mr. Vasquez's games with my students.I am very excited to tell you that I have seen results with students that, in the past, did not respond to traditional methods of sensory stimulation!Through the use of this text, I have been able to reach those students!! Thank you Mr. Vasquez for a very good book. And please if you are a fellow educator, I HIGHLY recommend you take the time to read this book!!!!! Sincerely, Laura Mageary, Woodland Hills, California. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jolly Good!
This book is so enjoyable and amusing you may consider moving to England. You can't even read it without having a cup of tea handy. The writer jumps around between a history of the world cup and his own favourite team, Wrexham in the lower regions of the English football league. In the process he also tries to explain the rules of the english game for the readers who were preparing to host the world cup in 94. Ironically some things that may be quite confusing are never explained! That is part of the fun. Obviously it is a bit dated now but still a hoot and very worthwhile. Great history of the world cup and also offers some understanding of what this sport means to those across the pond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Describes football from the grass-roots upwards
Speaking as a person who was born only a dozen or so miles from the small town of Wrexham in north-east Wales, I think that this book accurately captures the pleasure and the pain of being a grass-roots fan of a small, only mildly successful, football club, struggling in the nether regions ofthe English league system.5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect intro for the American fan to the 'Beautiful Game'
I picked up this book a couple of years back when a local San Francisco sports columnist described it as 'the best book on soccer ever written.'After reading 'Twenty-Two Foreigners,' I'll second that opinion.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The real Serena and Venus
If you are a diehard tennis fan, this may be a good book for you. It's a behind the scenes look at their development from early teens to young pros.As you might imagine, Serena and Venus come across as the loving, precocious girls they are.Their father comes across as the self-important, spotlight-grabbing huckster that he is. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended for tennis fans
Venus & Serena: My Seven Years As Hitting Coach For The Williams Sisters is the personal inside story and testimony of Dave Rineberg, who served as hitting coach for world-famous tennis champions Venus Williams and Serena Williams from 1992 to 1999. An inset section of black-and-white photographs embellishes this open and candid account of athletic training, determination, and the drive to succeed. As timely as their current history making performances on the tennis court today, Venus & Serena is very highly recommended for tennis fans who are eager to learn more behind the scenes about two widely celebrated champions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Page Turner
This book gets you up close to two young girls working hard to make it in the tennis world. A side (not seen on TV) told by their hitting coach who really cared about them and their future. You will feel the thrill of their first big wins and losses.I laughed and cried while reading it and felt great respect for Dave Rineberg's hard work with little or no recognition from Mr. Williams. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars women's tennis, from Bodo's rich perspective
This book was so easy to read- the reader is swept into the intrigue invovlved in the women's professional tennis tour. Peter Bodo is not afraid to ask important questions: should players forgo high school and college to attempt to cash in? What sacrifices are called for to produce a champion? Who controls the money in the women's game?
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding history of tennis in the Open era
This is the best book on this subject. The depth of the sociological analysis of the Open era is unprecedented. The strength of this book is due to Bodo's back and forth dual approach. In one chapter, he will paint a broad and often scathing analytical brush on one aspect of the Open era.He may even focus on the change in character of one Gran Slam tournament (Wimbledon, U.S. Open). But, the very next chapter he will likely focus on one single star and essentially write a biography about them based on his multitude of interviews he had with most of them.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Tennis Book There Is
Bodo's look at the Open Era of tennis (1968-present) is the best in existence. This book is detailed, probing, funny, and has a historical perspective usually missing from books in this genre. I particularly likehis psychological analysis of several famous players. Oh, and Bodo knowshis tennis, too, and has interesting things to say about the strengths andweaknesses of many of the game's stars. This is really a cut above almostevery other book written about the sport. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The introductory how-to for tennis that really delivers.
If you only get one book on the subject, this is the one.Our family waslooking for a brief introductory book about tennis, to read with our 10year old.We bought several but this is only one that really delivered. It truly is a step-by-step guide.Nicely written and beautifullyillustrated, this work is gushing with well organized and correctlysequenced information. In fact, although succinct in its 47 pages ofsketches and text, it also serves as a reference book to the fundementalsof the sport. It would be a true bargain at double the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative!
I recommend this book to any player especially the more advanced. Despite the fact that I rarely rate anything a five, I gave this book a five star because of the attention to detail and the broad spectrum of topics it covers. It covers things such as utilizing proper equipment, footwork, control and power, one-handed vs. two handed backhand, ball spin, volleys, serves, overheads, facts and myths of the game, practice, and mentality. This is an outstanding book because it not only tells you what is needed and alternatives, but it explains why each event is effective and how to do it. This book has my recommendation.

4-0 out of 5 stars High tech tennis
This book was great but tended to over do some points. I liked the little tips that were given on various pages. The only thing that i could see wrong overall with this book was that it is a bit old but the science of it has'nt changed its just that technology has.

5-0 out of 5 stars great complement to vic braden

3-0 out of 5 stars Trying to be Somebody
Back about 1960, as a preteen, I came across a paperback copy of Althea Gibson's autobiography, "I Always Wanted to Be Somebody."Books like these are why we read: to learn about a world and lives outside of ourselves, and thus [indirectly] learn about ourselves; to discover heroes & heroines, those who strove against adversity to achieve. This book was my first exposure to tennis [going on to play on the tennis team at school], and my first exposure to the struggle for equal rights.I haven't reread it in 40 years, but its lessons still reverberate.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite a book
It seemed a stretch to make the relationship between Gibson and Buxton the focal point of the book, since the relationship was spotty... It would have made (and perhaps did at one point) a good article.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sporting and Courage Back in Time
This book takes the reader fully back to time we've forgotten, before sportswomen were millionaires at 14, and to two people who were remarkable for any time in history. The in-depth research on Althea and Angela not only reveals much of their amazing lives but gives us the true picture of the era, as well. I loved the stories of courage and friendship, the insights from competitors and family, and the excitement of the matches.Whether you read biographies or just love sports, this is the book to read! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Great for drills, but useless for strategy
I bought this book hoping it would help me learn skills and tactics that would make me a better badminton player, but was really disappointed. This book has dozens of various drills that would probably have a positive effect on most persons' games if:(1) the reader had at least five hours a week of spare time to devote to the practice drills; (2)the reader has a partner willing to spend those five hours working on the drills; and (3) the reader can find a place to practice for those five hours.Given that most people (in N. America at least) probably have only a few hours a week available for either playing or court space (which they would like to use for playing rather than practice in any event), it does not become feasible to bother with the various drills that take up the majority of space in this book.4-0 out of 5 stars If you know the basics, it helps. Otherwise, it's confusing.
Badminton is probably one of the most underecognized sports in the westernworld, but it is immensely popular in Asian countries as well as severalEuropean nations. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Reader Review
I found The Lure of the Big Game very solid. It offers "field" tactics, a specific framework for winning and inspirational passages. The reader will find it delivered in an interesting and effective format.I recommend it for juniors, their parents, college players, and competitive league adults. After playing almost a thousand matches, including on the satellite pro tour,
3-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but...
As a former professional player, I was a bit disappointed with the book. While the author wrote well and provided the reader with interesting life lessons, the tennis content left much to be desired.Since the book claims to be geared towards the high-level player, I expected some insight beyond the bits of information that the tennis academies have been preeching for years.I agree with one of the other reviews in that the book is a treatise on life... but unfortunately, it is not a treatise on high-level tennis.

5-0 out of 5 stars CAVU- Clear and Visibility Unlimited
Not being much of a tennis player, but being an avid golfer, the parallels of how to approach your opponent by being either the executioner or the ultimate warrior made a lot of sense.I particularly digested the statement of "I don't ask for the tools to win, only the tools to fight, and I can handle the rest". This has motivated me to call upon my skills at hand as my desire to succeed gains momentum throughout the match. This a great read. ... Read more
