5-0 out of 5 stars very good book, but has some dangers
On the volley, Braden advocates having a forehand grip and a backhand grip. Not having a single volley grip has some advantages, but is a very distinct minority view.5-0 out of 5 stars fire your coach!
What a fantastic book!I've owned it for just two weeks, and have already seen huge improvements in my game, first by switching from the "natural" Continental to an Eastern forehand grip, and then by practicing Vic's recommendations on the serve until it finally ... clicked. We're talking about a 200% percent improvement on these strokes, and a corresponding improvement in my match scores. Thanks, Vic!5-0 out of 5 stars Tennis For The Future!
Tennis 2000 is a comprehensive guide to the game of tennis. You will learn about all the aspects of the game from: grips, strokes, strategy, mental issues; moreover some deeper insights from the players of the pastand the present. Many of the concepts are still relevant today: "puncturing some myths that hold people back ".Vic Braden is apioneer, merging sports science together with modern coaching methods; andincluding the experience of notable players such as Rod Laver, Roy Emerson,Billie Jean King, Jack Kramer; and a host of others who have contributed totennis. The Champions speak through him with a transference that isnatural; and filled with hope for all levels of play." WinningTennis Strokes " and " Quick Cures for Common Tennis Problems" are videos which would beuseful companions to the book which givea visual representation of the ideas in Tennis 2000.Coaches who feel thattheir demonstrations are weak can learn stroke technique in a short periodwith cues that are simple to understand. As the National Governing Bodyput it: " Are your demonstrations right? "The two videos helpedme to learn the proper demonstrations for which I will always be grateful. One of Braden's teaching gifts is the ability to put over complex technicalinformation in a fun, enjoyable, natural manner - not an easy task toachieve - furthermore giving cues that a learner can appreciate.Coachesdo find it difficult to impart correct methods in an appropriate mannerwhen old habits refuse to go away.Vic Bradens other videos; and bookshave helped me to realize the expansive nature of this sport.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely Maybe
Mr. Branden spends a large section of the book going over identifying the mental issues in playing tennis. This is done well however, actually finding solutions is not done clearly at all. 2-0 out of 5 stars Great Bathroom Reading
Yes, exactly that. Braden produces an easy-to-read book that dips into a bit of almost everything tennis except strokes. So he covers physics, genetics, statistics, psychology, great tennis personalities, finding a coach, tennis parents....ummm, yes, you got it. It's not so much about the mental side of tennis as a collection of tennis television commercials that every now and then touch upon the mental side of the game. So it goes alongside my people magazine (Vic is a marvelous rambler!) into the bathroom. And even when it covers the mental side, it is not very practical. There are other books that cover the mental game much better (e.g., Inner Game of Tennis, Zennis, Smart Tennis, etc). Still it is well-written and enjoyable and more decorative than potpourri by the bath.

3-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps a little eccentric
When it comes to refining your mental approach to the game, you've got to hand it to Vic Braden! I've always had the physical talent, but never the mental capacity to outthink my opponent, even if it was only a girl.Vic taught me to write down useful acronyms of my strategies and reactions to my opponent's strategies and shots as well on an extended wrist band that I make reference to between points - and sometimes during points(not recommended for beginners or women). For example, GAN is oftentimes effective when my net-happy opponent arrogantly holds his racquet above chest level(go after nuts). For a female opponent, Vic calls it GAP.This helps to teach a lesson of humility, says Vic.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed With the Tennis Ball Machine Drills
When I bought this book I was hopeful that the chapter on the Ball Machine drills would help me to use my new ball machine more efficiently.I was disappointed by the fact that the chapter was geared for more than one player and the machine, rather than just one player and the machine.I believe that most of the drills can be revised so that they work with just one player, but it didn't really contain what I was looking for.I didn't feel there was that much value added to when I go out with the machine before reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible number of great drills
While I agree with the other reviewer who said that the drills were tailored to a clinic setting, I have found that many of the drills can easily be adapted to as few as two people. The value in the book is in learning the concepts that each drill is meant to teach. If you need work on a particular part of your game, there is most likely a drill that can help you.
4-0 out of 5 stars great basic catalog of useful drills
This bookis a comprehensive, easy-to-read list of drills for all levels. The pictures and clear directions simplify my coaching andserve as an invaluable resource on the fly!Buy this book if you don't have oodles ofextratime to read fluffy descriptions and just need creative basic drillideas to serve as a backbone for your practices. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
This book does an excellent job at covering all the aspects of playing and coaching tennis. He divides tennis into 3 parts:the physical, the mental, and the emotional and he covers all three areas well. For example, he writes about your "role" when you play someone:are you the underdog or the favorite (he gives several other roles too)?He explains how to be comfortable with your role and how to excell in your role.He also writes about the different types of player personalities and how to best motivate them as a coach.I thought this book was just great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Tennis
This is an outstanding book that deals with every aspect of coaching tennis. The book is very easy to read and includes charts, diagrams and photos to supplement the excellent techniques described.A must for anysuccessful tennis coach!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to techniques, theory and drills for tennis
This book is great for the beginner, intermediate or even an advanced coach/player.No matter what level player the reader is, Kriese gives good advice on getting mentally and physically ready for the game. His advicecovers stretching and physical training, advice on how to play the gameagainst many types of players, (ex. players with good forehands and weakbackhands, players who are fast and come to the net, etc.), drills toprepare for the game, photos of techniques, diagrams on drills...and Icould go on.I've been using this book for almost two years to get tips ondrills and techniques as a player/coach.It's helped improve my game andthe players I teach.I highly recommend it! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not much insight about tennis vs other books.
After all the hype about this book, I was rather disappointed.Bud Collins, George Plimpton, and Pete Sampras all suggest he is a virtuoso among the tennis writing aficionados.Well maybe not...
4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely and thoughful tennis memoir
In Too Soon to Panic, South African tennis player Gordon Forbes interweaves tales of his life on the tennis circuit during the 1950s and 1960s with visits to the professional tennis tour of the 1990s. The book is a delightful reflection on his travels to the sport's greatest hangouts- Roland Garros, Wimbledon & Queen's Club, Manhattan, the Foro Italico. As Forbes returns to these venues his senses are stirred and he relates anecdotes, usually accompanied by diary entries or notes he made thirty years earlier. The result is a personal, thoughtful and entertaining read.4-0 out of 5 stars A toast to old friends and the joy that tennis brings
Gordon Forbes struck gold in 1978 with the publication of A Handful of Summers, a joyous bacchanalian romp inside the international tennis tour in the 50s and 60s.His new book is more of an afterword to the original. Many of the same characters appear and there is little doubt that Mr. Forbes had a great time during is glory days. While not a disappointment, this novel is not really a novel. It has no plot, it has no rising action, it has no resolution--what it does have is a memory.A memory of times when great tennis players traveled the world for glory, not gobs of cash, and knocked back a few beers at the pub after the daily match was over.An older and wiser Mr. Forbes also pays touching tribute to his sister (wife of tennis starr Cliff Drysdale) who recently passed away.Although unspoken, the reader is compelled to understand that tennis is a vehicle whereby people can socialize together and form the bonds that are both personally important and enjoyable. No doubt, there are many funny anecdotes here (most involving his doubles partnerknown as Big Abie). However, Mr. Forbes does not seem to have his heart in the telling of them.Rather, he seems to be taking stock of his life and the things that matter to him. Still, it is well written and engaging. This will not disappoint anyone who plays tennis and loves the history of the game. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the besttennis book, period
For diversity, quality and quantity (960 pages), "Total Tennis" hits winner after winner.Past and present stars from Sears to Sampras and from Suzanne to Serena are covered with in-depth and fascinating features, either from SPORT magazine or by Bud Collins himself, the encyclopedia's distinguished author. The careers of hundreds of other players are described in engrossing profiles and bios.Collins' superb knowledge of tennis shines brightest in year-by-year stories of the greatest players at the greatest venues, as well as in discussions of important issues, from 1919 to 2002.The most memorable matches come to life with intriguing prologues -- before Lenglen's 1926 showdown with Wills at Cannes, France, she told a friend: "This girl must be mad.Does she think she can come and beat me on my home court?" -- riveting match coverage, and incisive epilogues.Comprehensive registers of both the pre-1968 amateur era and later pro era provide abundant statistical information5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tennis Book
I've read a lot of tennis books and this one is great.Except...Collins describes each season beginning with 1919...and leaves out stuff from the late 1800s and first two decades of the 20th century.Great picture of Leo Tolstoy on a tennis court though.Terrific book...and cheaper to purchase it on Amazon.com (which I did not do!)

3-0 out of 5 stars Well, 3.5 if they had it....
For 10 bucks, what do you expect? I guess I expected more! But for the price, it's a good book. A tad bit simplistic and sketchy on the shots, it has a lot of great drills (if you can hit the ball that great after the short instructions!) The pictures are good quality and they take the stills at just the right point--but they need more pics--and more on hitting the ball and more on footwork. There's a few good tips. Overall, I'd say if you're not too serious, this is the book for you! For me, it's on to the next one. -- an avid tennis enthusiast ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Real Life On The Tour
Though it now reads like a history of early '90's tennis, when this book first came out I pored over it with excitement to find out what the lives of my favorite players were like. All the big names of fifteen years ago are here: Sampras, Navratalova, Selles, Graf, Courier, Agassi, Fernandez, Vicario, McEnroe, Edberg and Lendl. Great champions all. This is set over the course of one full year on the circuit, from the Australian Open in January, to the end of season tournaments that follow the conclusion of the Grand Slam series at the US Open.Anyone who wants to learn about what it takes to compete at this level of tennis can get an education here. Also someone interested in the inner workings of the tour and the agencies that govern it can find out what they want to know. And although it seems odd to say this about one of the most influential books I read when I was so into this sport, it also serves today as the record of a long-ago year in the game of tennis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of entertaining quotes from tennis greats!
You Can Quote me on Thatby Paul Fein is loaded with entertaining quotes from all the great tennis players, many of their coaches, their families, and even other celebrities. From the Foreword by Billie Jean King in which she states " No one and nothing is spared", to the 35 chapters dealing with various topics such as #6.-The Fame Game, and #15. - You've Come A Long Way, Baby!, I was hooked. The quotes are quick and easy to read, with remarkable documentation of who said what to whom and when.I especially liked the nasty comments between John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl--i.e. "I've got more talent in my pinkie than Lendl has in his whole body."--John McEnroe.(so politically incorrect these days!).Arthur Ashe's 1970 quote that "Women's tennis won't draw flies.", couldn't have been more wrong, surprisingly coming from one of the greatest endorsers of the game. But my favorite quote, coming from Martina Hingis is "I like everything about tennis; the games, the courts, the competition, and doing everything you can to win. It's such a beautiful sport."Anyone who enjoys playing tennis, watching tennis, or hearing about the good and bad boys and girls of tennis will truly enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars That's Entertainment!
Paul's books never disappoint! The inside information, entertaining anecdotes and insights which his books provide make them a must read for every tennis fan and player. His books make a great gift for every tennis lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book you will enjoy a lot
In the foreword, Billie Jean King writes, "You Can Quote Me on That" contains hundreds of funny, informative, and provocative quotes by and about present and past stars on 35 different topics. No one and nothing is spared."I agree completely!I'm a big tennis fan, and I had never heard or read 80 percent of these quotes before.
