5-0 out of 5 stars Lifting The covers
The behind the scenes stories Mr. Mills tells of the players and the traditions at Wimbledon over his long and illustrious career are amazing. He has the deep background and insights into personalities (he likes Jonhny Mac, but even through his British restraint you can tell he thinks Jimbo is just a big bully) - for all of us who've wondered what it is he says to the winners, and even more deeply felt to the losers, after a championship, you get to read it here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to increase your enjoyment of the Game.
Years ago I read a book called the Inner Game of Tennis. I thought I would read it again to help me at the Table Tennis Club.As I was reviewing that book on Amazon, one reviewer suggested this Zennis book instead.I went for it and ended up absolutely loving Zennis.I was getting very angry and frustrated before this book and now I enjoy the intense competition more than ever.My game has improved some, but my attitude, interest and enjoyment of the game has made drastic improvements.I think my game will improve even more as I get used to my new foundation. When I am in the Zennis Zone, my game is facinating, creative, interesting. 'Watching myself' make stunning and surprising shots becomes normal and almost comical.A huge improvement from my absolute frustration andranting.I wouldn't let the Buddhism scare you.As an unashamed Christian I found only a sentence or two that would contradict or offend my faith.I actually prayed that God would help me with my anger and feel He led me to this book.Very easy to read not as easy to apply. It was right up my alley.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to be happy playing tennis
Can a book change your life? Are you ready for the challenge of changing the way you see yourself, your life and the tennis game? Well, in my case I can answer "yes" to both questions. Mr. Spang translated into words several impressions and feelings I had in my mind for a long time. For me it was really impressive to rediscover the way I see life and the tennis game. I said rediscover because I am sure I knew a lot of the things that are mentioned in the book, but I had forgotten them. Just like Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher said, know yourself. You already know all the answers, it is just a matter of remembering them. It is not only a book about tennis, but also a voyage inside your mind and heart. I am not a tennis pro, but I certainly love tennis. And reading Mr. Spang's book made this feeling even stronger, along with other surprisingly good feelings. I came to meet my demons more often, even made friends with them and learned to produce positive energies out of negative ones. Reading this book you will find very little technical advice but you will certainly come to know a stranger much better: yourself. And through a very exciting way: playing tennis.

4-0 out of 5 stars The other side of the net
Peter captures some of the subtleties in the game many other coaches andplayers over look.He brings to the court a broad perspective that helpsyou think outside the box. His techniques for finding the zone areeffective, but it require some courage to go through with the drills.Thenot so obvious workings or non-workings of the mind during play areaddressed throughout. There are some gems of information that should beworth the read for anyone attracted to the title. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is terrific!
For any player who wants to improve or enjoy the game more, Jak's book is a must.It offers many practical tips for singles and doubles. The sections on developing topsin, effective breathing during a match, club competition doubles strategies and practice routines are alone worth the price.
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book!
More Than Just The Stokes Is absolutely the best tennis insructional book I have ever read.It is not a fancy book in terms of glossy and impressive pictures but the "meat and potatoes" of tennis instruction is there in SPADES!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
I started playing tennis 10 years ago after a lifetime of playing "other" sports, including competing at the collegiate level in football and wrestling.I am currently a 4.5 NTRP level player.I have become addicted to tennis, probably as a result of the marked need for contrasting physical and mental perspectives which I find so challenging and (potentially) rewarding. This book addresses that contrast more vividly than any book on sports to which I have ever been exposed. The ongoing internal battle to control your emotions in tennis is, in my opinion, the most difficult struggle one encounters on the court.Beardsworth is the Zen master of tennis, as he helps all us warriors become more focused and masterful on the courts. This book is worth every penny for those who are interested in improving the satisfaction they get from the sport (and it will generate a lot more wins as well!).It is chock full of specific tips that I have been using again and again on the road to improvement.I highly recommend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All Meat; No Fat
The only problem readers will have is deciding which piece of professional advice NOT to highlight. By the time you're finished, your entire book may be streaked in bright yellow, like mine. 5-0 out of 5 stars A TOP TENNIS BOOK
This book takes a different approach to improving your tennis game but I think it's a good one.The author is straight-forward and doesn't hold anything back. While he does give detailed instruction on the actually playing of tennis and covers all aspects of play he highlights the ways to really improve your game by your positioning, attitude, thinking, etc.He goes beyond the typical "hit the ball this way" method present in many tennis books but breaks down tennis play into easy to understand logic. There is a lot of information in this book but nothing a persistent, and hard-working tennis players can't handle. You will benefit most by reading, then using that instruction on the court then reading some more and applying your new instruction the next time you play.Take it one step at a time and I think you'll benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tennis Bible
When I first started playing tennis about 4 yrs ago, I E-mailed my mother a list of tennis books and said, 'buy 1 of them for my birthday.' Mom is great so she bought all of them. I flipped through them all, but I read, studied, and re-read Peter Burwash's book. I am now reading it for the 4thtime and every time I get something new out of it. He discusses strokes, strategies, fitness and attitude. He does it all in a way that is easy tounderstand. I began taking private lessons last year and it was amazing howmany things I learned that I quickly recalled from this book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BY FAR THE BEST BOOK ON DOUBLES
I've read several of the popular books on doubles including The Art of Doubles by Pat Blaskower, Laugh and Win by Vic Braden, ect. In my opinion these other books are interesting at best but don't hold a candle to Unlimited Doubles. The author's way of breaking down the game into simple concepts REALLY helped me to understand. I no longer worry about all the other things most coaches try to get you to think about like "Who takes the ball in the middle?", and "Should I play the add or deuce court?"I no longer worry about all that becauseI FINALLY UNDERSTAND THE GAME! I'm poaching more than I ever have, I'm taking the initiative to win and I LOVE IT! No longer do I stand on the court hoping something good will happen. I'm closing into the net and using angles for the first time in my life! I'll be reading this book over and over again. Thank you SOOO much!

2-0 out of 5 stars Fair Primer for beginners and intermediate doubles players
After reading or hearing many good things about this book, I thought it was a no-miss. However, this book has to rank in the bottom quarter of my collection, not to mention overpriced. Other doubles books are far superior in translating the essence of doubles. Tourdo simplifies doubles to twelve lessons (aka Point Control System): the essence is being proactive in moving in and to the ball, taking control of the tempo, and aggressive consistency. There is very little on the importance of serving and returning, neutralizing volleys vs attacking volleys, different poaching cues and doubles formations, etc. Since it is so simple, it is actually quite palatable for the singles player trying to become a bit better at doubles or for the 3.0 player trying to become a better doubles player. However, since it offers so little, most players might be wanting to digest a bit more (check out Blaskower's or Braden's doubles books which are superior). I would also recommend it to "mindless" players since often 2-3 (rather than 50) simple cues might make a significant difference. Not recommended for serious players, doubles specialists, or coaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a video that teaches you something new.
Oscar does a great job showing you how easy it is to hit like a pro. If you order the tapes then don't order the whole series. It's basically the same material presented in the first series just under a different title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great videos (and DVDs) as well by the same author
This is the new space age way of teaching tennis. It already propelled Spain into the top rankings, as well as Srichaphan, Kuerten, Spadea, the Williams sisters, and now is being used by Russia, where this book was translated, for their star tennis development, with great success.5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book plus the two videos
I bought the two video tapes plus the book about 10 years ago. Gratefully my tennis has improved over the years. Not having watch the tapes for over eight years, it was such a refreshing experience to review the tapes recently. Now I am hitting my backhands and forehand groundstrokes with far more power and confidence. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated but noteworthy
Tilden's techniques make for an interesting study of the simpler physics that begat today's more brutal physically- and mentally-challenging game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have to your collection
It should be onr of the first books to get if you have a collection. As a tennis pro, the instruction is outdated and techniques don't apply as much to today's game but for 1925 it was cutting edge. It's entertaining

5-0 out of 5 stars Why is there no movie about this man?
It confounds me why there has never been a movie made about this man. His story has all the parts of a great drama. A great athlete. A man of the world. An respected author. And a man who finally fell because of his background. A tragedy. What a man. What a story. And what a movie it wouldbe. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tennis Confidential fascinates, informs, and entertains!
As a tennis fan, especially in a family with few tennis fans, I enjoy reading outside material about the game. Not tips on playing, but about the pros, especially stories, history, analysis, etc.So I figured this book would fit right in with my appetite, especially from the subtitle, 'players, matches, and controversies.'I was right!
5-0 out of 5 stars An eye opener
As a former coach of several world-class players and also former National coach for the French, Swiss and Hellenic tennis Associations, I most appreciated the originality and expertise in Tennis Confidential. Pro tennis has plenty of controversies about on-court coaching, the scoring system, equal prize money, ranking systems, doubles reforms, the service let, etc. The essays analyze them with more thoughtfulness and fairness than I've seen before. Your opinions about certain issues will undoubtedly change after you read these essays. Interviews and features with Agassi, Serena Williams, McEnroe, Ashe, Navratilova, Borg, Sampras and other champions are also eye-openers. History fans will definitely enjoy the six retrospectives and the 10 greatest matches. On a light note, everyone will have fun with "True Confessions" and the amusing and sometimes shocking trivia that is sprinkled throughout the book. Several of the articles received writing awards. This is a book you will want to read and re-read.

4-0 out of 5 stars TC
Tennis Confidential is not an encyclopedia, but it IS encyclopedic. There's a lot of substance within its covers:player profiles, interviews, controversies, history, greatest matches, and even a brief history of racquet design.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best about a great person, and tennis player
she changed the world that nite.read this to know how.

3-0 out of 5 stars Goes A Bit Off Track
Some interesting archaeology about the now nearly forgotten King-Riggs tennis match. Roberts, of the NYT, brings to life how important this thing seemed at the time, even though it all looks decidedly quaint today. Where the author goes off is when she tries to relate this to the federal Title 9 law on equality for women in sports. It's a bit forced, even if valid. Perhaps it's the book's herky-jerky structure that is just not nuanced enough to make this work. She also includes some interesting background about the Williams sisters, the relevance being that they later reaped what Billie Jean King sowed, financially. Maybe so. In the end, Riggs comes off more sympathetic than pathetic, and King is a bit too deified. Still, this is some high quality social history about an episode whose effects still have an echo.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MATCH and how it changed the world
The subtitle of this book 'the Tennis Match that Leveled the Game' isn't quite strong enough. This single match, called the 'Battle of the Sexes' was far, far more than a tennis match, and the aftereffect was far, far more than levelling the tennis game.
