3-0 out of 5 stars More style than substance
There are some nice stop-action photo sequences of various strokes, but the actual techniques described are pretty basic and can be found free on the internet - lacking the world-class depth that the title would lead you to believe.Deficiencies are quite glaring in the serve section, where nothing is mentioned about hitting the different serves such as slice, kick, topspin etc.As the book is a compilation of many different authors, it lacks a unifying process for describing and teaching the strokes, which are broken up into different chapters, making it overall too general and inconsistent.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Scientific Treatise on Tennis - dry and with some holes
An all-star cast was called to write this authoritative primer on modern techniques. There are contributions from Jim Loehr, Dennis van der Meer, Howard Brody (tennis physicist), Vic Braden, Jose Higueras (reknown clay court coach), Bruce Elliot (Australian biomechanist), Don Chu (strength and conditioning expert), etc. The graphics are quite good and the reseach is based on the latest in sport science. Some problems do exist, however. It appears that the book is written for the serious tennis player in addition to coaches and teaching pros. However, the use of language is dry and scientific in many areas. Even advanced players may find it too theoretical. Practical implications are often up to the reader to draw. The use of high-speed multiple-frame photography isn't exploited enough considering the resources of the contributors and editors. Disappointing sections are the backhand (Braden and Jack Kramer) -- barely an effort considering it follows a brilliant section on the forehand (Crespo and Higueras), volleys and overheads (van Fraayenhoven & Schapers) -- which attempts to cover too much in little details as possible (except for approaches), and tactics and technique (Herbst and Patrick McEnroe) -- also didn't seem very well thought out. Best sections include Revolutionary Rackets (Stan Smith and Brody) --which is written for the player(!understandable and enjoyable!), Kinetic Chain (Kibler and Van der Meer) -- well thought out analysis, court surfaces (Coe and Miley, ITF), specialty shots (Paul Dent and Patrice Hagelauer) and the forehand. A must for the serious coach/pro and a good buy for the serious player if you like reading analyses. Comparable in science for the teacher is the German Tennis Association "Tennis Course" series. Roetert and Groppel's book, however, is a rarity in that it analyzes top pro modern techniques rather than giving a template for beginners and intermediates as most books do.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer on the major strokes and much more
The full color, high speed sequence shots have already helped my game. The in-depth analysis of each sequence preceding each major stroke have given me the confidence to go to the next level.I play for fun but it's nice to surpass those that I never thought I could beat before. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for the Technique
One of the best on technique written by top German (Deustcher Tennis Bund) authorities. There are multiple action-photo sequences for most techniques and illustrations of errors and what to do. Few books come close to its clarity or thoroughness in covering tactics. It is a bit dry (as with other German tennis books) but that doesn't take away from the usefulness of this tome as a reference. 5-0 out of 5 stars ACE
Besides Dick Gould's classic book on tennis instruction. This is one of the best modern books on modern tennis techniques and tactics that I have come across.I was looking for a book on tennis instruction for a friend and came across this gem.Easy to follow with many illustrations and some pictures and loads of good sound tennis advice. This book serves up an ACE! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Win or loose Nasty had more fun!
This is an entertaining book about one of the most charismatic players of the Open era. Win or loose he enjoyed the game like few ever did.He was active on the ATP tour until 37.And, he still reached the 4th round of the US Open at 36.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nasty is back!
If I'm not missing any, this is the fourth book published about the charismatic and controversial Ilie Nastase (two of which were published in France). This speaks volumes for the popularity enjoyed by this genius of tennis.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent autobiography book.
This is an excellent book written by one of the greatest tennis players of all time - Ilie Nastase. The book is both very interesting and easy to read. It features Nasty the way he was : a great tennis player , a showman and a Man. There is nothing either in the book or in his life to make him look differently that he was. We envy and respect him too. Through him all the other men can fulfil their dreams as lover and man of world. He proves us all that in spite of his poor roots he reached high. He will always be an inspiration for us. Friendship was very important to him and he made us all feel as if we were his friends. I twice saw him on some demonstrative games and I was thrilled. He was the same Nasty from the book. He used to play and he is still playing for the tennis sake. Money meant nothing to him. Life was generous with him but he turned his generosity back. It was a permanent process of taking and giving back. As a poet said once : " Nature should stand up and say: This was the Man. ". He was always a model to be followed even if he never claimed that. His private life was a permanent turmoil starving to find the true love in a world in which every woman would have offered him for free. Hope he finally found his rest with Amalia.I would highly recommend you the book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A beginner's view
While I do not question Nick's ability to teach the game of tennis, this book was not written for beginners. In fact, it is hard to tell who it is written for since he never makes it clear. From what I can tell, the book seems to be aimed at the average coach or instructor who is looking to improve his or her teaching methods to juniors. It seems the book was written under the assumption that you already have an extremely strong foundation of the concepts and mechanics of the game, but again, it's hard to tell. I also believe the author spent way too many pages as promotional material for his prestigious tennis academy. Perhaps in five years when I have a much better understanding of the game, I will come back to Nick's book and look to improve my game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bollettieri's Tennis Handbook
This is a good book to go along with Bollettieri's video series. It is a book that you can carry along with you to help remind you of areas that you need to work on. However, this is not a book to teach a beginner the game of tennis. This book is for the intermediate to advanced player and them the best techniques on training and strokes. If you are a total visual person, then the book isn't for you. If you can understand the concepts and have a good base to start with, then this book, along with the video series and be and excellent source for help. My favorite areas would be the Killer Forehand, Boll-istic Backhand and the Sonic Serve. If you follow the instruction in these 3 sections, I promise you that you will notice a big difference in your game.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bollettieri's Tennis Handbook
For any tennis players who want to learn any stroke, DO NOT buy this book. It is a total waste of money for me. Like the previous reviwer said there is no picture for the stroke production section at all. I BOUGHT his videos which are sketchy in many parts. I bought this book to clarify things on the tapes. I tell you there is nothing in this book that can help me understanding the videos better.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Discover Tennis Essentials
I have fond memories of watching tennis and also playing tennis. As children, my brothers and I spend many happy hours on a tennis court soaking up the sun. Even in college, tennis was still very popular. While outdoor tennis courts seem a bit more difficult to find where I live now, I did recently find one near my home.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book was absolutely terrible. Boring, stiff, way too complicated. You can totally tell this guy is no fun to play with. I didn't learn anything. Definitely not for the beginner. I also purchased Dynamite Doubles and it was great. Easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to apply. It was a great, fun read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insights that only a true doubles player would know.
It's clear when reading this book that Stan put a lot of time and energy into making sure the book was filled with good information and no fluff. Many tennis books present the same things you can get from taking groups lessons from your local parks and recreation department. This book, on the other hand, contains the type of insights into doubles that you can only get from expensive private lessons from an experienced pro.It contains so many nuggets though, that there's no way you could get them all from a pro. That's why this book is great to refer back to over and over.
