Informative and fun!
If you want to learn more about German football/soccer, its history and stories, read this book.Hesse-Lichtenberger is a fantastic writer and enthusiastic fan of the sport (and not necessarily the way it is played by the Germans), who puts all his love and knowledge into this book.You will learn about the "Schalker Kreisel" which made one of Germany's club teams (FC Schalke 04) one of the best and most advanced teams in the world when German soccer didn't have a wimming reputation.You will learn about some of the scnadals of German soccer and about some of the forgotten stars.Hesse-Lichtenberger takes the subject seriously, but finds a light and humorous voice that makes this book entertaining and enjoyable.Read more

One of the Best Rules/Referee's Book Out There - Now Updated
This is by far the best rules/referee book out there. It has "test your knowledge" in every section that test basic and advance knowledge, including good examples that sound like gray-area interpretations, but are well explained. The book covers all aspects of FIFA rules, but presents them in a different order than an "official rules" book. Coaches should read this book too
I have coached AYSO for 8 years to include at the Allstar level. I found this book clear and complete. The Q & A sections are very stimulating for standard field events and some esoteric challenges as well. Where appropriate, drawings are included.This book can be read over a couple of days and is an excellent reference. It's the best I have seen so far.

Very Good Instruction on Referring
This is a fine guide to soccer officiating.Soccer rules are simple but sometimes difficult to interpret and there is a body of knowledge about interpretation that is not found in the official rule book.This book is a good practical manual on the rules and interpretation.It is organized well and has a series of questions (essentially FAQs) sprinkled throughout the text that add additional educational points.It is a very quick read.One defect is that the edition available in the USA is from 1994 and there have been some rule changes since that time.These have generally been minor, such as it is now theoretically possible to score from a kickoff, but this information is not in this book.An updated edition would be desirable. ... Great Read.
As I grew up in Europe before sattelite TV and the Champions' League the only time I ever heard of Maradona was at the world cups.The book provides a really good account of his career for those of us who didn't know much beyond the international games, but it also reveals a lot about the man himself.Maradona's enthusiasm for the game and his story is remarkable.The book is well written and very readable.

really worth it
Written with passion and coherence, Diego goes back to his humble beginnings and takes us all the way to being offered 100 million dollars for his commercial rights (remember it was the 80's...) ....but his story is not about money. It's about being the best and having the wits to understand it while being there....very well written (because the book was structured with a team of journalists...)....it is a pleasure to know about him straight up from him and not through somebody else's understanding of somebody else's life. Go ahead ...get it.

A life of passion for the beautiful game!!!
I've been waiting for the English translation of El Diego ever since I knew he wrote his autobiography and it was worth the wait. I saw Maradona in Mexico 86 and the other three World Cup he was in and also his fantastic years with Napoli. It is amazing, interesting and insightful to read the events that went on the pitch and off from the man himself. A life of controversy. No grey area for Diego who can be both hero and villian, God and Demon. I love Maradona as a footballer who gave me countless moments of beauty and excitement on the pitches. Now I get to know Maradona the man. His bad sides that the world know but he does have good sides to be admire which we don't know much about because he waited 40 years to tell. I love the book that I read it twice. It's very real and you feel what he felt as he tells all. You'll enjoy it even if you don't like Maradona but is one of the people who love the beautiful game. He takes you back in time, football wise as well. A must for El Diego fans. You don't need to read any other books about him after you read this. ... Read more

Old, but good
This book was first published in 1973, but remarkably little has changed from a technical or tactical standpoint in the time between now and then.This book provides the basis and terminology for all of the USSF licensing courses (yes, we copied the English).Another benefit is that it contains very clear diagrams of both correct and incorrect positions (placed side by side for comparison) in areas of discussion which include, but are not limited to: creating space, support in attack, passing, shooting, defending and attacking at set pieces, and goalkeeping.The book does include some activities for use in training sessions, but if you are looking for a drill book, this is not the one to buy.Having said that, however, I highly recommend this book, as it is an excellent primer and resource on coaching tactics.It is written in such a way as to be applicable to any team that plays 11 a side (although many of the concepts are applicable to any team because they are emphasized in a small sided setting such as 2 v. 1), and can be understood easily by any coach from novice to expert. ... Arnsparger Makes It Happen
Without a doubt, Coach Arns is one of the greatest defensive coordinators ever lived. He opens up his "almost" whole system in this book and explains his specific schemes really well and how and where to run them. This book is a MUST for any defensive coach from any level. Great book... but needs study.
I consider myself to be a student of the game of football. This belief was put to the test when I purchased this book last year. I consider it a mark of achievement that after a year of study, I finally understand MOST of the concepts within the book. Too scheme specific
I found this book to be way too specific to Coach Arnsbarger's scheme.That is great if you are starting a defense from scratch or want to revamp your system.We already have an effective scheme and a successful defense.I was looking for something that would just make us better.I did not find it in this book.Just my two cents. ... Honest Account.
I like Manchester United and Keane so am biased, but this is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in what goes on behind the scenes and United and in the thoughts of someone whose behavior has been so "interesting" over the years.Keane gives a "warts and all" description of his career and behavior.

Tell it Like it Is, But Tell More !!
I like Roy Keane..He is direct,explosive and successful without possessing the sublime skills of Best or Cantona. The book is written in the same direct style as his playing. He tells it straight but is lacking in detail. You get a glimpse of the man without really ever getting inside his head. He shares the highs and lows (and even his first salary with Man. Utd.)...but lacks the capacity to captivate the reader like a good biography should. Most of what is in here, you already know...Interesting glimpses of life as a successful sportsperson but lacking the cutting edge that he delivers on the football pitch...

Direct, like Keano plays!
This book is a candid look inside Roy Keane's thoughts.He freely shares what he thinks about the game, opposing players, teamates, and many other subjects.

Conditioning for Soccer
I don't normally write book reviews, but I was very disappointed with this book and felt obligated to balance the other overly enthusiastic 5 star reviews. Some of the material, such as the chapter on "Strength Training Exercises", is really not soccer specific. Also, the chapter on "Speed Training" is largely comprised of games such as "Numbers Passing Game" and "Three Versus One in Grid", which Luxbacher had the audacity to simply excerpt from his other book "Soccer Practice Games"(a far better book with great games I have used successfully with my travel soccer team). The 4 page chapter on Plyometric training was interesting, but overall don't waste your money on this book.

great book if u love soccer and want to move faster
This book lowered my 2mile run from 16 minutes to 13.5 in hardly 1.5months.the off season training guide is comprehensive and differs eachday so as to not get bored.plyometrics add true fun.Much of the bookfocuses on other aspects of soccer such as quick turns and acceleration. Even a section on pregame eating for peak performance.

Beautiful Brazil Book
This book gets at the marriage between Brazilian life and Brazilian football like no other. Great research, great interviews, great stories--all written with great intellect, love and humour.
Football and Society
As a self-confessed football fanatic (soccer for all you American and Australian readers), shamefully my knowledge of Brazilian football was rather lacking. Knowing that I would be spending eight months living in Rio, this past Christmas I went out and bought a copy of this book hoping to learn a little more about the game as it is played in Brazil. While the book did somewhat of a good job meeting my goals, this book is much more than just a guide to Brazilian football. Rather it is an in depth investigation into the strong role that football plays in Brazilian society.
Samba Soccer At Its Best
Alex Bellos, a British journalist for the Observer and Guardian, does an excellent job with this tremendously researched book. He takes the reader across the sprawling expanse of continental Brazil, and we are left with a very candid view about "futebol," along with its history, traditions, innovations, humorous characters, corruption, but above all, that it is underlying glue uniting a very diverse nation. One can argue that soccer is the common religion of Brazil. Perhaps more apt would be to say that Brazil is the temple for those who worship world soccer. We have found our Holy Book in this work by Mr. Bellos.
