5-0 out of 5 stars Fills an Important Need
There are many books about sports nutrition, but very few that focus specifically on nutrition during exercise. In fact, to my knowledge there were none until this one came along. The Performance Zone, written by exercise physiologist John Ivy, Ph.D., and biochemist Robert Portman, Ph.D., fills a major informational void by providing athletes in all sports with detailed guidelines for fueling their bodies during training and competition.5-0 out of 5 stars sound nutrition information
New sports nutrition books seem to show up every week, so it is easy to be skeptical of each new one. But Ivy and Portman have put together one terrific book that unites nutrition and performance with sound (but not overwhelming) science giving very practical advice on the use of nutrition to improve exercise performance. Put both this and their companion book, Nutrient Timing, on the bookshelf and forget all those other books. No matter if you are a lifter or a runner, these will be all you need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DON'T KNOCK IT TILL YOU'VE TRIED IT !!!!
I'm no scientist or nutritionist nor have I consulted one so take this for what it is worth.
5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding technical/scientific reference
This is an excellent reference to the science behind and beyond THE WARRIOR DIET, not that you have to have that book to read this one, but it is more of a clear application guide to the concepts in this book. This book can be a great resource to the serious athlete but because it gives no specific plan to use the information in it, it is not for the weekend health recreationalist. Be warned it is a very complex book, the information is all there, but the average reader will likely have trouble understanding much of the information without some background or previous interest in the technical functions of chemicals and hormones in the body. A lot of scientific talk here. Excellent book, but be ready to do more research to get a full understanding of all the knowledge in here.

2-0 out of 5 stars Complicated
-This book is not written for the average caveman. While reading it, and I did read the whole thing, I found myself blah blah blahing in my head until I hit an interesting point or two.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginner but...
I agree with other reviewers that this is a great starting place for beginners. Some of the highlights that others didnot mentioned are:5-0 out of 5 stars Learn To Design Your Own Weight Training Programs
I'm fortunate to have a brother with a master's degree in exercise science and a lot of experience in strength training, as he's always designed my weight training programs for me. But being the self-reliant kind of person that I am, and not wanting to impose too much on my brother's time, I asked him to tell me what one book he would recommend to someone who wanted to learn how to design their own weight training program. He immediately recommended Weight Training Steps to Success. After reading this book, I understand why he recommended it so highly.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!

5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition is Way Better
I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Weight Training Product I have ever used......

4-0 out of 5 stars The Drills In This Book Are Incredible!
Before this excellent book came out, very few people knew how strong and athletic Coach Davies is. Now everyone will know! The drills in this book are both unique and I have no doubt that they will be very beneficial to extreme athletes. Naysayers will say that many of the exercises in the book are not practical and will not carry over to extreme sports. Ask them how long they have been surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding. Furthermore, ask them how many extreme athletes they have trained. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best sports conditioning book I've ever read!
Coach Davies takes extreme sports conditioning to the next level in this book. He introduces techniques that even the pros can't do on their first *100* tries! Coach Davies excites the reader to start training by introducing a program that defies all preconceived ideas of working out.5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for athletic preparation

4-0 out of 5 stars Harry & Sarah Sneider's Olympic Trainer: Fitness Excelence through Resistive Rebounding
Who would have thought that bouncing, shuffling, jogging and using soft hand weights on a mini trampoline would be so beneficial to one's health.Harry and Sarah walk you through the steps of turning one's body into perfect shape.Although first published over 20 years ago the information is timeless and even today they run the Schneider Fitness Center in California using the technology included in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ageless and Timeless
I have been in the fitness industry for over 25 years. We all know there is truly nothing new under the sun, only new presentations and combinations of the old! There are certain things that have not changed in 25 years in this fitness industry! The important basics, most experts agree, haven't changed:Sound stretching, Strengthening with resistance, and Cardiovascular basics!I feel Dr. Sneider's book is the pioneering standard in the industry.Being a 2 Time Women's World Long Drive Champion, I have found Resistive Rebounding to be one of the many secrets to my power!

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works!
I have read Harry and Sarah Sneider's Olympic Trainer and use one of my 2 rebounders often.I travel extensively and have a responsible and pressure job as a sign designer and trainer of sales people for the largest manufacturer of lighted signs in America. My energy and fitness level is very important to be successful. The book helped me to get off to a good start rebounding and I have called Dr. Sneider a few times in California with questions and I have ordered 2 rebounders for us from him: one for home for my wife and one for me on the road.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty "Good"
I enjoyed this book.It was exectly what I expected, a little bit of insight, a little bit of instruction and a little bit of personal observation.4-0 out of 5 stars Good new coach book with many team building exercises
I read this book after reading Anson Dorrance's Training Soccer Champions and Lauren Gregg's The Champions Within. This book is better for the new coach who may be just forming their coaching attitudes and style. For coaches of totally dedicated Premier level teams or higher, the other two books are probably better.Catch Them Being Good shares many of the viewpoints of the other two books on building teams, motivating players, and forming strong positive attitudes. The other two books had better technical information and (perhaps because I read them first) struck me more powerfully than this one. This book was more readable for a beginning coach.I think the team building exercises are a real plus and are the biggest items I will take away from reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Experience
Ok, this book is wonderful.Tony and Colleen put it all together for you coaches and parents out there! The truth in black and white. I am a product of this type of coaching. I was blessed to have been a soccer player who was led by Dr. Colleen Hacker at Pacific Lutheran University. She caught me being good more often than bad and I thrived mostly as a young woman but also on the soccer field. The book takes you through the life of a season from the very beginning to the end.Tony gives examples of experiences he has had with players/coaches on the US National Team.A valuable tool and great food for thought. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars entertaining but not quite accurate
The author tells his story in a very entertaining way.If you are a bodybuilder, which I am, several of his accounts can be related to.There are several parts where I do believe he exaggerated a bit.I have been around the bodybuilding game for years and have not seen some of the things, nor experienced some of the things he claims to have experienced.taken with a grain of salt the book is worth reading.taken as 100% factual would be a mistake. I would give it 4 stars just from his writing style and humor. I would give it 2 stars on how he deals with the facts of bodybuilding.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dishonest and fraudulent
MUSCLE is the most fraudulent novel about California since LESS THAN ZERO. Both books sought to curry favor with the eastern literary establishment by bashing the Golden State as a brain-dead hell on earth, and both books succeeded in flattering and delighting their target readership.
4-0 out of 5 stars Understand where the author is coming from
This biography of Sam Fussell's experimentation (serious experimentation) with bodybuilding is a truly great read.I highly recommend it.However, you have to understand the perspective from which the book is written.Fussell writes this after having quit bodybuilding, as an effort to reestablish himself among the intelligentsia who fear/despise bodybuilding.Fussell's tone is thus appropriately apologetic and confessional, and he describes bodybuilding as "the disease."Remarkably, he has nothing good to say about the lifestyle that consumed him for several years. The child of literary parents, this is Fussell's literary mea culpa for straying from the fold.It is not, therefore, an even-handed description of bodybuilding.I think it does contain a lot of good material, and makes some great points, but its perspective should be understood up front. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Laughable Reviews for what is Common sense
Some of the reviews here are just laughable. The goal for using this program isn't just about "looking good." For some, its actually about developing strength and power that can be translated into specific sports. Common sense dicates that there is a direct correlation between this squat program and the caloric intake recommended. If you are actually dedicated to this program, and grind out those reps with increasing poundages, you have no choice but to eat because they will make you brutally hungry. If you aren't hungry from doing them, well then you aren't putting in the work necessary. Its that simple.

3-0 out of 5 stars You'' get big but you'll get Fat too
all the milk this guy advocates and the heavy eating will get you big and strong if you train the way he says but it will likely also get you fat with all the extra calories. His 30 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks would be more like 5 pounds of muscle and 25 pounds of fat. I advise you get a book by Stuart McRobert and look into the training methods of Vince Gironda or Larry Scott and you will be on your way to looking good. also make sure you do something for conditioning which this book advocates very little.Do some sled dragging, running, cicuit calisthenics, burpees but do some cardio.
3-0 out of 5 stars A little Overzealous
I liked the book, it has some good ideas, but nothing works forever. If you've never worked out with weights before, you can definitely gain on this program, but thirty pounds is an exaggeration. If you want 30 muscular pounds in six weeks you are dreaming.I do like the documentation of goals, weights and size based on joint measurements. Some cool ideas, but nothing is bible and this book sure isn't.References to the strongmen of old are cool, but if your looking for great references, pick up Brad Gillingham's DVD, Westside barbell articles by Louie Simmons, and Ed Coan's book.Nuff said. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a great read
Train To Win is a great book and I recommend it to any athlete. I read the book in one sitting. It is enjoyable to read, and it seems like you are constantly learning lessons. It touches on so many different aspects, all of which are crucial to your training.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tons of info, very inspiring ...
This is an excellent book with tons of information on how to create your own training program.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sshould be at the center of any athletes training program.
This is a book who's principals can be used for any athlete. From the pro to casual and from basketball to Mixed Martial Arts and beyond. To many athletes buy a couple body-building magazines and take the workouts from those magazines and implement them into their training for their sport. With no real knowledge why they are doing these workouts other than some pro athlete listed it as what they do. Without knowing what you are trying to accomplish and how to do it you're certain to fail. This book is a great step in the right direction. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Playing golf isn't hard; it's playing it well when you're not on your game that's difficult, and few have ever mastered that skill better than former Masters, U.S. Open, and PGA champion Raymond Floyd. One of the fiercest competitors on the fairways, he's as tough with his mind as he is with his clubs; Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone wanting to improve
As posted previously, this book isn't about swing mechanics, but about playing smarter golf and being realistic about your game. I think this book would be extremely beneficial to the beginning golfer and would make a great gift. It's a quick read and well written. I try to read it a couple of times a year to remind myself to play within my abilities and keep a good attitude.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Scoring and Playing with Confidence
I am a low handicap golfer who grinds to shoot in the low 70's.Typically, I hit 7-8 greens in regulation. After reading Floyd's book, I played a round and hit 14 greens in regulation. The next round I played in a vicious wind and shot 77.Better than scoring low, these were the two most comfortable rounds I've ever played.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
Floyd is still one of the best chippers and shot gamers in golf. The PGA pros when interviewed say the same thing. He has a lot to share and much of it is "tough love" to us amateurs--don't over-club, be realistic with your average distance not your best distance etc. He is a very clever golf course manager and it shows in his advice. His description of his early days when he was a risk-taker and losing, while trying to be like Arnie, was very interesting. Once he decided to manage his risks around the course and be himself he became a big winner. This would certainly not be the first book for a beginner (you first need to learn to swing) but this should be a fairly early addition if you want to score well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Answers all the BS I hear when I do tours.
For the most part, there are two kinds of riders in the world: 1) people who ride, ride with others, and have expert knowledge based on experience, and 2) people who read and talk about riding, buy only the best and most expensive equipment, yet have trouble with such simple tasks as navigating obstacles or managing heat loss. The No. 2s out there are obsessed with weighing pasta, exact calculations of cadence, heart rate, aerodynamics, and shedding single digit grams from their bicycles. The No. 2s also make the No. 3s (novices who just want to ride more) nervous about taking on an event or increasing their distance because they're convinced by the No. 2s that they haven't the expertise or elite equipment needed to ride 'seriously.'
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Arnie covers common aches and pains, butt/groin numbness, nutrition, aging, etc etc.The dude is an MD and an avid cyclist which means he brings to the table the facts of the medical issues relating to cycling and the practical aspects (like how and what to eat before a race) of riding.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed
Maybe I had too high expectations for this book. A lot of solutions (eg lower back pain) are: change bicyle fit, but don't elaborate how and why! Also, women should not stay in the drops too long if they anticipate a romantic evening? It's not a bad read but I was hoping for more solutions and insights than it offers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No-nonsense, old fashion Weightlifting
My first impression when I opened a light and skinny envelop of the delivered book was that of opening some business correspondence letter. The book is only 132 pages, of black and weight print that could be produced on a home printer, the era preceding of hp-laser or inkjet. Though the first edition came in 1997, it immediately revived my memory of the struggle to print and publish my own book on those days. It is a painful experience for authors to meddle with so many hurdles in order to get their information to the reader. Then, there is my bias in favor of a fellow weightlifter attempting to maintain a dying sport form retiring to history archives.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid info.
Cissik did a very thorough job researching Olympic-style weightlifting - in fact, this text reads like a research paper/thesis.Having said that, the text might be a little too formal for some.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This book is MUCH better than the first edition. The beginning of the book is a concise description of the Olympic exercises and associated assistance exercises. This is good for the beginning lifter. The secondhalf of the book is on workout design. It is EXCELLENT and draws heavilyon EASTERN EUROPEAN texts (They always have the best lifters!).The bookis worth buying for this section.Powerlifters and fitness buffs can usethe principles outlined here to greatly improve their progress.Everychapter is heavily referenced for those who are interested in learningmore. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
I like this book very much; the exercises are all great and cover a wide range. My book was not spiral-bound as one reviewer mentioned. That would have been a great bonus!

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but some caveats
This is one of the best books I've seen of it's type.It is well organized and the approach is realistic. There are three general types of workouts which are mentioned in other reviews i.e. firm foundation, slim and trim and muscle bound.Under each one there are three levels of difficulty. These workouts are well thought out and the general lifting guidelines are valid.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
A lot of great information and facts about the history of soccer and the developing tactics that makes soccer what it is today. Only downside for me that the author talked more about individualls and less about systems than I had hoped.BUT, it was still a very good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Andy Gray knows his football
I love the commentary team of Andy Gray and Martin Tyler.Their comments are always interesting and spot on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful
Any fan of British soccer will enjoy this book, especially those who are interested in tactics. The diagrams are very well designed. Elegant would be the word to describe them. Andy Gray does a great job of describing the roles of various positions, the strengths and weaknesses of systems, and the players, managers, and teams that made each one successful or unsuccessful in some instances. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I think the book is excellent for anyone interested in personal fitness, regardless of whether or not they have joined or will join the marine corp. The stretches, explanations, and workouts seem to be carefully reviewed by professional physiologists and excercise scientists, but I dont know if that is really the case. the nutritional information is solid. It gives insightsinto boot camp and the marines life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid workout book.
I liked this book. To complement what other reviewers wrote, the book has actual day by day schedule of Marine boot camp pt exersices. It highlights the difference between OCS at Quantico and Parris Island/San Diego recruit training. In addition to daily 16 it has workout schemes for different time schedules. The photos were useful, as many would concentrate on a particular machine or exersice and show it from various viewpoints.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's got some uses
The 16-day workout plan and the exercise tutorials are good.A lot of the book has no use to the average home user.Unless you have access to a military training ground. It does highlight some of the stuff you will do in boot camp. ... Read more
