4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Workout Program
This is a comprehensive program that includes both nutrition and exercise. Although there is nothing new in the nutritional part of the book (unless all you've ever read were fad diet plans), it's nice to have it included with the workout concepts. The program is meant to develop balanced fitness - strength, muscle mass, flexibility, power, and endurance - without shortchanging any component. There is an emphasis on recovery and good nutrition
5-0 out of 5 stars One of those rare things that is what it says it is.
I thought I was in shape; I was wrong, but I ma getting there now. This book set me up to take the next step....... which can be found on the last page of the book!

Editorial Review

Fitness trainer Jorge Cruise has helped 3 million cyberspace clients lose weight, and now he's headed for your bookshelf with the same goal in mind. In just eight minutes a day, says Cruise, you can drop two pounds of fat per week, change your shape, and gain muscle and energy. His secret formula: an inspirational "wake-up talk," followed by strength training two muscle groups per day, eating according to his "eating card" program, and keeping a journal. For exercise, Cruise presents a varied, 28-day program of illustrated exercises using dumbbells. Why the emphasis on strength training? While aerobics burns calories while you're exercising, adding muscle revs up fat burning at rest by increasing your metabolic rate. Every pound of muscle you gain burns an extra 50 calories per day. You'll look better and feel younger and more energetic, resulting in more activity, burning more calories, he says. Cruise's eating plan emphasizes "good" (omega) fats, complex carbohydrates, high-quality protein (low in saturated fat), and vegetables, with dairy, fruits, and "treats and cravings" in moderation. His "Eating Card System" gives you an allotment of portions from each of the food groups. If you're the kind who likes the regimentation of following a specific program every day, Cruise will get you moving, eating better, and losing weight. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 8 minutes in the morning
My husband and I just Love this book, and all the excellent information,we ordered it and recieved it in no time,I would recomend this book to anyone. Trish Boone

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK AND CONCEPT!
8 Minutes in the morning is a staple book in my house. I can talk myself into doing 8 minutes when I can barely talk my sorry backside off the couch! And it really helps. My waist trims down, my arms gain strength, and best of all, I don't feel guilty! Sure, I fall off of my good intentions bandwagon, but time and again, I pull the book back off the shelf...This book is particularly helpful for new mothers, when you're traveling, the homebound, the writer (me) who wrinkles my nose at most exercise routines, and those who find themselves short on time. If don't get that run in later in the day, you've still stretched, lifted weights and did your body some good.
2-0 out of 5 stars More than 8 minutes . . .
Just a warning - 8 minutes doesn't count warm up, stretching, or the time it takes you to get up from the floor and situated to the next exercise (something that I find really annoying and ineffecient!).

Editorial Review

Arnold Schwarzenegger hasn't competed as a bodybuilder since he won the Mr. Olympia title in 1980, but he remains the sport's No. 1 icon. He hosts an annual bodybuilding contest in Columbus, Ohio, and allows a column to be ghost-written under his name in a muscle magazine. Today's bodybuilders may have bigger muscles than Arnold ever did, but everyone inside and outside the iron game gives him credit for exponentially broadening the popularity of physique training.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Comprehensive, User-Friendly... But Where Are the Women?!
With all of the other verbose reviews posted here extolling the various perks of this massive encyclopedia, I will merely say succinctly that "The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding" nearly covers the sport from A to Z without missing a beat.It is a great reference book and I have been finding it very inspirational whenever I set out to develop a new routine for myself. The many personal stories told in Arnold's friendly voice are also generally interesting, and the chapters dealing more specifically with competitions and nutrition are noteworthy.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Book Of It's Kind!
I originally bought this book around 20 years ago. I read it from cover to cover many times andlearned a tremendous amount! Years ago, I regrettably lent it out without ever getting it back so I recently bought another copy for my son when he started weight training.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ouch
Guys, I respect Pavel, and he has a tremendous reputation in the power-training world.I was really excited to begin the routine in P2P, but it only took me three weeks to WRECK my lower back from the deadlifts and my right shoulder from the side presses.I'm a strong, healthy, 26-year old guy with about a year of freeweight experience.I paid very close attention to Pavel's directions, and still got injured. There are safer routines out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent start
I liked this book and have been following the cycles in my strength training for quite some time. The principle of irradiation is interesting and I've since eliminated the idea of isolation and replaced it with emphasis. I like how this book teaches a practitioner to become strong without adding any mass. I would only give the book 4 stars because it is a start and not a one stop source for developing strength. For the price of the book, it should be. I have made significant gains on this program but have reached plateaus and I also find that when I abandon this training, my progress is quickly lost. I think the author purposely holds back information in his books so that he can later publish new books containing the missing information and make more money. This is no way to do business. All this aside, this is a great start to strength training but the book does have its limitations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Strength, Strength, and little but Strength
Some people will try to sell this as Pavel's Book of Muscle.I disagree. This is a book on strength training, period. If you're looking for an overall fitness book, look elsewhere. If you want to know how to get strong, using just a barbell, this is your ticket.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book was very easy to read and comprehend the material. It provided basic sound advise in regards to mental athletic strategies. There was a wealth of references to very successfull athletes.I would recommend reading this book if you enjoy sports psyching techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the time and the price. If more tactics, better
Many readers said that it's clumsily written. I really cant agree so. It's a little repetitive especially in the second half of it. However, the author did quote a lot of real life examples including successful players' personal quotes to stress the importance of the mind on performance. The key message had been well delivered, for sure. However, it would be better if he could tell more on the "how" side, as in page 9, "One key to achieving success in sports is learning how to focus on the task and not let negative thoughts intrude. The mind can concentrate on only one thing at a time. So, rather than suppress what you dont want to happen, you must focus on what you do want to happen or on some neutral thought. In working with the placekicers, I use a distraction technique. I ask them to create a word that, when said to themselves, will block out all negative thought and help relieve tension."
2-0 out of 5 stars Not well written, rehashes other books.
I have just about every book on the topic of sports performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars unbeatable
Of all the training books out there today, this is the only one i have seen that really speaks to the swimmer specifically! This is an invaluable resource for any swimmer or coach.I would recommend this to the novice swimmer or a pro. Two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Splash!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beggining marathoners!
This book makes it easy for a runner who wants to jump to the marathon level. It gives you a step by step training guide along with nutrtional tips as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars too short.
I am training for my first marathon and thought this book would be a good resource. It's got some good motivational stuff, but the book is just about basics; I didn't feel it had any "meat" so to speak. You can read it cover to cover in an hour or so, and I didn't come away with anymore information than I could find on marathon websites. Save your ten bucks and do the research on the net, buy a different book, or even better - join a marathon training group headed by a veteran marathoner.BTW, I did pick up Nancy Clark's marathon nutrition book - that is a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy training guide!
I went from a 4:40 marathon to a 4:24 marathon (2nd marathon). Not bad!I'm using this training plan again and going for 4:15.I like this book because it cuts to the chase, it's easy to read and just gives the basics. There are training plans for longer times than 4 hours as well. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for the neophyte, nothing new
This is a good book to have if you know nothing about nutrition and want to learn some of the basics. You can collect all the basic information here through general Internet research. True, it's nice to have it all in one place in a logical format, but I really expected much more detailed advice for a book targeted specifically to endurance athletes than 'you need to manage your carbohydrates over the length of the event'-type advice. Not worth the money in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to digest (sorry!) and helped my riding a lot
Ryan's writing is clear and effective. I had some of the basic concepts, but reading her book really clarified how to eat before, during, and after long bike rides. Since reading her book I've set a number of PRs for long rides, due in large part to changing my pre-ride and recovery eating habits. I strongly recommend this book to any endurance athlete who wants to feel better while running or cycling. It's the next-best thing to seeing a nutritionist in person (which I also recommend).

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Sports Nutrition Book
As a coach, I want my athletes to not only be training well, but using sound nutritional strategies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Expressing the Human Body
There was a time that I was skeptical that a 145 lb., 5'7", individual could have anything to offer as far as offering instruction on building tremendous physical strength and acheiving combat skills that are rivaled by few. This book deals with the first point...that of building tremendous physical strength which would be utilized for acheiving excelling combat skills. Great insight into the mind of a man who I once doubted could acheive such greatness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Technique is wisdom. To train is power.
What an outlandishly brilliant collection of Bruce Lee's personal training regimine. This is utterly priceless for its detail and stark showing of Bruce's true grit.It was a fight at a local dojo instigated by a rival martial arts group in China Town, San Francisco (actually they disapproved, as many did, Bruce's teaching such high quality lessons to Americans - really can't blame them) that spurred Bruce on to investigate and finally put to practice the lessons of bodybuilding and strength training.Extreme conditoning also - i.e. lots of cardio (2-6 mile jogs; 45 minute stationary biking; interval training, where you sprint several hundred yards then jog, then sprint, then jog and so on).
1-0 out of 5 stars Dont' bother
I was very disappointed in this book. It's not quite sure what it's supposed to be, and so, ends up being nothing. There are endless lists of workout routines that Bruce Lee supposedly used. But, they usually have little or no explanation, so are useless. There is no, repeat no, nutritional info that you can't find in a free booklet in any supermarket. There are weight training guidelines for rank beginners, but nothing that hasn't been done better by weight training or martial arts magazines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read book for power meter users
If you presently train with a power meter on your bike or are thinking of getting one, this is a must-read book.Authors Hunter Allen and Dr. Andy Coggan are eminently qualified to write this book which is the first full-length book devoted solely to the subject of training (and racing) with an on-bike power meter.Hunter allen is a full time coach of cyclists and triathletes who uses the power meter as a key element in his training approach.Dr. Coggan is renowned as a widely published exercise physiologist and is also an avid master's cyclist.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource
The second edition (2001) of this work is indeed an outstanding resource. My daily work includes imaging of sports and musculoskeletal injuries.I find this book frequently useful to supplement deficiencies in my knowledge and experience, and a most useful companion to the second edition (2001) of "Musculoskeletal Ultrasound" by Marnix van Holsbeeck and Joseph Introcaso.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for physical therapists - incredible value
This is an astounding book. When was the last time you saw a 900+ page hard cover book packed with useful photographs and excellent line drawings...The practical advice in this book is unparalleled. No wonder it is an international best-seller. It arrived quickly and well packed from Amazon. Keep up the good work and thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Sports Medicine Book I've Ever Used!
The Second edition of Clinical Sports Medicine is the best reference book I have come across as an athletic therapist and professional fitness and lifestyle consultant. I find it very easy to navigate with great illustrations and information. The references are all very recent and evidence-based so you feel confident in following the authors' recommendations. It is particularly good value at 67 US dollars - most hardcover books of this size are about twice that price. The corresponding website has updated information, including relevant published papers, which I find quite helpful also. These authors have really done a fabulous job of classifying sports medicine information in a logical and easy-to-use format. It's hard to argue with success; it's even tougher to emulate it. But ifyou want to train like a Tour de France winner, you couldn't do much better thanlearning the tricks of the trade from two-time champion (1999 and 2000) LanceArmstrong.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
I planned to write that this book is useless, but it is actually worse - it is downright annoying. Unless you are interested in how Lance surfs the net after a training ride or who his girlfriend is, you will find it far too vague to be of any value.

4-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for every cyclist
Lance's name and picture on the book's cover has the major selling appeal. However, it's also the book's drawback. Why? The book says that "inside you find the exercises, ridind schedules, endurance builders, and mental tricks that brought Lance back to the pinnacle of cycling". Sorry, but you will not find this in the book. The book is obviously written by Chris Charmichal, not Lance. You will find in the book every aspect of cycling a beginner should know. An expert that lacks training discipline will also find the book very usefull. But as mentioned before, you will not find Lance's training regiment to win Tour the France. If the book have had the following title, "The Chris Carmichael Performance Program for Cyclists", it should have earned 5 stars. As a "Lance Armstrong Performance Program", it earns just 4.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful workout program
The triathlon program was thorough and easy to follow.I started the program less than 2 weeks ago and I can already see results.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars looks good
This book looks very good.Other books concentrate on total fitness for triathlon with only limited emphasis on weight training, while this book puts all of its emphasis on weight training and is the perfect supplement to any other triathlon book. The programs appear to be very easy to follow. I look forward to putting it to good use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars dave drapers book
I wondered what ever happened to dave so I went looking for him on the internet,I figured he was dead, but no he is alive and kicking and even writing books.A must read for all weightlifters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quality work that's worth the money
In this enlightened book from golden ager Dave Draper delves into everything bodybuilding. This book is great for lifters of all ages but especially those who have been in the game awhile and need a kick in the butt to get things in gear. His advice is top notch because he's lived it and still practices it. Informative and inspiring, a no doubt hit for those with love and interest in the "iron game."

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading but do it with a wink wink
I read the book and enjoyed it and looked at it for what it was---a book thats not really applicable for the average person.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good variety for your workouts
I've been fitness swimming for several decades which usually means go to pool, swim a mile. I recently started working through the workouts in this book with some triathlon friends. Still manage to get my mile but every day takes a different focus, my swimming has improved and I enjoy it more. Each page is something fresh and different. While the pages are waterproof, you do need to spend a few minutes and wipe EVERY page dry when you get home, not a big deal. Or stick the book in a ziplock bag and avoid the wet pages problem in the first place.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Training Tool
I have been using this book now for 2 months and I have enjoyed the variations in the works that I get each time I go to the pool, it can not replace the value of a coach, but as a training tool it can't be beat.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good tool, but with one serious flaw..
The workouts and the book overall are good, and for the self-coached athlete, much better than trying to think up a workout every day. There are two main sets for each workout, one longer than the other, but they could use more differentiation - one may be 2600 meters and the other 2300 meters. It should be more like 2600 and 1900.Or slip a third option in the middle.Of course, if you are reasonably experienced, it's not had to extrapolate whatever distance you plan to do for the day.Read more

Editorial Review

One of the dirty secrets of the fitness world is that for all the talk about the importance of stretching, many athletes and other fit people don't bother with it. It's hard to gauge the benefits, and it seems as if the time could be better spent running, lifting weights, or perfecting sports skills. This sentiment is expressed by Dr. Bob Arnot in the foreword to "The Whartons' Stretch Book," and he says that the Whartons changed his mind. He went to them with a stiffened hip that he thought needed surgery, but after a regimen using the active-isolated stretching technique, his flexibility in that hip had increased 40 percent.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Whole Body Stretch
I was looking for a good book that I could get ideas for stretching. I am getting ready to be a fitness instructor and wanted to learn new stretches for before and after the class. The book is really good, but most of the stretches are done on the floor. I wanted more stretches that I could do while standing up. But overall I am very happy with my book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for athletes
This book was recommended to me by a skating organization. I thought it would be for top athletes..and while it is...there is a section for typists, people on their feet all day, methods of stretching to avoid surgery in some instances, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars beggining of carpal tunnel
I began to develop tendonitis in my wrist, when I began to over do it in my guitar playing. This book showed me some wrist stretching which after about a month and a half the pain began to subside greatly.
