4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the caning instructions alone
I bought this book paired with the more advanced Canoecraft book and really couldn't be happier with both of them.Having read the Canoecraft book first I was left with some questions reguarding technical aspects of boatbuilding that this book answered wonderfully. The approach the author takes reflects one of an experienced teacher explaining the task with an eye toward common mistakes and how to avoid them. While the finished product as outlined is a bit heavy and lacking in elegance, as compared to the Canoecraft boat, I plan to utilize both books in the construction of my canoe.(Please note that the heaviness comes from extra fiberglass reinforcement that is a real necessity in the rocky streams of Maine, the author's state, and not so much here in the Midwest.) The real bonus, aside from the caning instructions which are wonderful, is the fact that you are also getting scale plans for eight boats which can be scanned, scaled and printed full size at your local copyshop. The project is easily completed by anyone who is remotely aquainted with woodworking techniques and in many instances the author explains multiple methods of doing the same step with a list of the pros and cons of each method.Excellent book to buy for your first canoebuilding experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gilpatrick's book
About 12 years ago my dad and I built the wabnaki canoe using Mr Gilpatrick's book, and this year I built a Prospector design using Canoecraft, at least in part.I would like to add my opinion abut the relative merits of these books.
3-0 out of 5 stars If you liked this book, you'll LOVE Canoe Craft by Moores
I'm truly surprised at all the 5-star ratings this book has earned here.I checked this book out at the library and it was the first book I read about strip-built anything.Even at that time I was shocked at some of the shoddy work shown in the pictures (done by teenage shop class students, not the author).

1-0 out of 5 stars "Shiver me timbers!"
Maybe I'm being unfair, but MAIDEN VOYAGE rankled me from the starboard dust jacket to the port, with its repetitive, "The first American woman---and the youngest person ever---to circumnavigate the globe alone." That, and the saccharine title just set my teeth on edge before I ever turned to page one.
4-0 out of 5 stars Full of Courage
Being a parent of two daughters I don't know if I could do what Tania's father did -- sending his daughter sailing across the world -- ALONE -- at the age of eighteen. But I do understand his vision of what an adventure can do to change a persons life, and that is definitely seen in Tania's story. She left a troubled teen and came back a woman.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful...
Maiden Voyage is a wonderful account of Tanya Aebi's adventure around the world. Her story is told in such honesty that any reader may feel the longing to explore the world.I myself have spoken of it so often that my husband is a little worried that I will leave him and the land for the seclusion and adventure of the sea.He needn't worry, but I at least want to learn how to sail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Water World
I first heard of the late Jacques Mayol from the now classic cult movie "The Big Blue". Judging by this encyclopedic work, the real Jacques Mayol was a more interesting character than his celluloid image. "Homo Delphinus"is clearly a work of love and a beautiful book. It is published in a large glossy format with stunning photos. It is difficult to classify the book as it is a combination of science, semi-science, ecology, philosophy and mysticism. Mr. Mayol is successful in producing a touching work that summarizes his life long romance with the aquatic world and his hopes and visions for the future.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I am a great admirer of Mr. Mayol. Since a child I felt always impressed about his contributions to science and conservationism. However, I just felt so disappointed when I read Homo Delphinus. Through it, he tries to cover many topics, but in such a superficial way that it made me anxious for not getting into any point at all. And his theory about the "homo delphinus" is only a collection of cliches and general thoughts.5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST
Being a diver and a fan of the sea, having met Jacques Mayol the guru of breath-hold dives in Oct 2001 in Elba and upon learning that this famous book was now available in English, the next day I procured one from this site.Having since learnt of Jacques's passing on the 22nd of Dec 2001 I feel that anyone who dives or simply loves the sea and its creatures should get hold of this very remarkable book - before it goes out of production.Read more

What a fun read, what a masterful and accurate description of the real of boating on the ICW and rivers of this wonderful country - all I can say is THANK YOU. The reading of your book gave me great pleasure and makes me want to do it all over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Read...Even If You Don't Own a Boat
Honey, Let's Get a Boat"
5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful read
There are lots of technical boating books out there and they are easy to find. This book chronicles one couple's own adventure on the "Great Loop" in their first cruiser, a 40' (wow) trawler.I loved the writing style--great humor and sometimes romantic descriptions of the goings on (Mr.'s descriptions of Mrs., their married kids' near "marital conflagration" on deck, the story of the chocolates, cruising with the senior ladies. The descriptions of the travel are very well written. The experiences aboard will be appreciated by addicted boaters and non-boaters alike. This is an adventure story. When I finally retire and head for the Great Loop in my cruiser, I will think often and fondly of the Stob's and this delightful book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic, and mandatory reading.
Everything by the Pardeys is good. This book cannot be too highly recommended. Still, even the Pardey's budget(at least for their super swanky boats, albiet minimalist) might seem unachievable for many. I'd get Anne Hill "Voyaging on a Small Income" and Jerome FitzGerald's "Sea-Steading" to fill out the bill.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Cost Conscious Cruiser
This is very useful for preparing a boat (and crew) for a cruise. Helped put many things in perspective...especially what you can do without. Excellent ideas!

5-0 out of 5 stars It Helped Me Select Gear for My Sailboat
I bought my first sailboat, a Catalina 30, in 7/02. The boat did not have much equipment. This book helped me in the selection of the appropriate level of equipment for the type of sailing I intended. In particular this book helped me avoid spending more than I would otherwise have spent and feel good about it. As an example, I followed the advice to avoid buying the very expensive "offshore" foul weather gear. However, I still spent much more that the Purdey's would say is necessary. The book helped me make better spending decisions. The writing is clear. The tables arehelpful. The stories from their vast experience taught me a lot.The book is less helpful to someone who is looking to use their sailboat for just racing or day sailing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful guide for people with physical restrictions
This guide is helpful for persons with physical limitations and provide safe non-impact exercises. It would be helpful if the guide would inform the purchaser that assistive devices would aid with the routines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The best parts of this book are the detailed photographs of all the exercises, included in both a large format (one per page) and a small format (so that you can see many exercises per page). The only thing that would make the book even better would be if the small photographs were offered separately on water-resistant material, so that you could bring 'em into the pool. I'll probably photocopy those pages, and laminate them, so that I can do that. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Thank goodness I found this book!
I had a devastating knee injury about five and one half months ago (the doctor stated that I may never be able to obtain my pre-injury range of motion)The traditional rehab was going very slowly and very painfully. I asked my physician if I could exercise in the water, and after his approval, I started with the workouts in this book along with my prescribed rehab. I have gained 80% of my pre-injury range of motion and on a good start with my strength and balance with VERY little pain!! My physical therapist said I started improving much more rapidly after starting the water workouts and I have already exceeded the expected post-operative range of motion. I could not have done it without the water workouts!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great review and guide book
Having not been diving in 1.5 years, I wanted to review some things before getting back in the water, so I bought this book.I thought this book was great. The author talked about his experiences, some techniques he has found useful, and procedures/ways to make things easier.Seems to cover everything, from multiple chapters on equipment to shore vs boat diving, how to deal with problems etc, etc.Very easy to read and understand how to apply what you read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the new diver
As a newly certified open water diver, I know that there is a lot to learn. Open water certification allows you to dive safely (within limits) but it can't prepare you for all of the variations in diving. This book is a great guide to get you started on many different topics in diving.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for new divers
As suggested by the title, the author provides solid information for just certified divers. For people with a few years of scuba experience much of the book will be useless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers a lot on Classical Hull Construction
Larry Pardey book is the definitive guide on Carvel Plank construction, he takes you through the building process of their 30' Talesin.
5-0 out of 5 stars The way it's done.
What to say about this book...it shows you wooden boat construction at its very, very best.Starting with raw lumber and simple hand tools, Larry Pardey takes us, step by laborious step, on the odyssey of building a truly world class cruising yacht, his 30' Taleisin. Not only is every step of the hull construction detailed, but we also get "real world" time and cost estimates so there are no illusions as to how much time and money each step will take. There are superb "pro and con" treatments of aspects that have a variety of solutions. If there are multiple ways to tackle a job, he makes two columns and discusses the pros and cons of each in detail.Usually you just get the author's opinions without any extra information.

5-0 out of 5 stars must have for boaters
excellent and thorough - a real compliment to the spec sheet and manual provided with the engine.Good maintenance tips that were not included in the original manual.

2-0 out of 5 stars Compton's book covers the basics, but barely
I bought Compton's book based on an ad in [...], a rather heavy duty marine diesel oriented web site. I already had Nigel Calder's marine diesel book and was somehow expecting more, but got less.
5-0 out of 5 stars this book could be an art book its so beautiful
Wow.........Ok so recently I bought an excavator with some engine trouble, not a sailboatand am and a complete novice at all things related to diesel engines, this book is one of three that I bought , its very easy to understand and the illustrations are fantastic the layout is also very plesant. I read lots of technical books on many different subjects and this book has to be one of the most thought out in terms of explaning a complicated subject to some one with little to no experience,in mantaining an engine. If you had no interest in diesel engines this would still make an excellent coffee table book , as you could read it for a few minutes and learn something or just brouse the lovely pictures.I am thinking of getting a few more copies to give as gifts .thanks ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding story - uneven writing and organization
This is a spellbinding book on a scuba diving drama that raises mixed emotions, as it combines a variety of topics and experiences and confronts the reader with a number of challenges. As the title implies, it is nominally about the last dive of Chris and Chrissie Rouse, a dare-devil father-and-son scuba dive team that perished in 1992 while trying to unlock the secrets of an undocumented German U-Boat laying at 230 feet of water about 60 miles off the New York/New Jersey coast.
4-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing study of what drives risk takers
Bringing their only child into the world, and making a lifetime commitment to each other, changed everything for Chris and Sue Rouse when they faced her unplanned pregnancy. Chris was 18 years old, and still in high school, when Chris Jr. - known throughout his life as "Chrissy" - arrived. Sue gave up her dreams of college, a career, and world travel so the young couple could build a business and a family instead. Eventually they succeeded so well financially that Chris could afford such hobbies as owning his own small airplane. Then he discovered scuba diving, a sport to which he promptly introduced both Sue and Chrissy; and the Rouse family's lives changed again. Never inclined toward doing anything by halves, they soon moved from recreational diving - a relatively safe pursuit - to the adrenaline rush of cave diving.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Any Wreck Diver
Bernie Chowdury does a great job at giving an in depth look in the life and death of the Rouse's. This book is a must read for anyone involved in the sport of Wreck Diving. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn 12vdc by Boat!
Very useful, but recommend it only for those who want a very detailed description of 12vdc.While it is mainly for boats it is clearly a resource for all who are considering Solar or 12vdc systems.Detailed descriptions, photo's and diagrams.Well worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful.
Buddy and I just purchased a 1989 Hydrasport and the wiring is a mess. This book has been very helpful for someone like me who doesn't know the first thing about wiring or electrical systems. It works its way from the basics of electrical current and circuits up to specific instructions for installing lights, pumps, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sherman certainly doesn't tank with this tome.
In fact, he more resembles King Henry at the Battle of Agincourt with this winning effort. I dabble in Marine Electrics but find myself ineffective applying the principles of instruction. While I understand why a customers boat needs a working galvanic isolator, or why I want to rip out from their boat the residen-Read more
