1-0 out of 5 stars online manual is complete garbage
dont waste your money on the online manual version of anything seloc.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too General
The book tries to cover too much with little detail. The information on my 40 HP Outboard did not match the electrical or fuel system. Pay the extra money and get the service manual for your Outboard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good manual at a great price
This manual doesn't cover everything in finite detail but it is thorough enough that you will be able to figure out the rest.It was good enough for me to replace the water pump and seals in my 175HP Merc Lower unit with no previous experience with boat motors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our cookbook of choice, after trying many
We had heard about this book while in St. Maarten and finally found it at a swap meet in Trinidad. Many sea miles later, it's still our cookbook of choice. So many other cruising cookbooks left out ingredients, had typos, or had such elaborate preparation steps that you could never make the recipes unless you had a full-sized, professional kitchen. This book is perfect. Simple, yet delicious recipes that can be make quickly (and without leaving an oven on for hours in the tropics). We especially found the appetizer section helpful when we were low on happy hour ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small Galley, Big Help!
We were only a month or so into our cruise having left San Francisco in 1998. We met Kay and Hal at the always helpful & friendly DOWNWIND MARINE in San Diego. I bought the book thinking that I would need some help, especially in our tiny galley. It's been 2 years since we left. Most of it spent cruising the Calif. Coast and Mexico. I've really grown to depend of Kay's book for ideas, tips, ingredients and combinations. Even for ideas for the odd fish that was the only thing available! Thanks for such a comprehensive and great cookbook written especially for cruisers!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for those working any galley
This book is essential reading for anyone working in the galley - whether blue water, bay or lake cruising. The recipes are outstanding, easy to follow and amenable to tight quarters.More importantly, Kay Pastorius offers advice about the basics that most of us have to learn the hard way - by throwing rotting food away. Her advice about provisioning, storage and cooking is right on the money, literally.I only wish my boat-mate, a meat-and-potatoes guy (who I wouldn't trade for the world), was as enthusiastic and supportive as Hal.Thank you Kay. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A FANTASTIC BOOK FOR DIVERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS
I bought this book some time ago while on a diving trip to Borneo and immediately fell in love with it. This is the guidebook every discerning macro diver has been waiting for! After a long introduction and a funny, informative chapter on "the fine art of macrophotography" the authors describe in full detail more than 600 different marine species, ranging from invertebrates (nudibranchs, crustaceans and mollusks) to small and not-so-small fish. Every species entry features full, first-hand information on size, habitat, geographical range and life habits, and the book is chock-full with hundreds of absolutely stunning color pictures of the critters. Despite its restrictive title, the contents are in fact perfectly useful for any Indo-Pacific dive site, ranging from the Maldives to Papua New Guinea and Northern Australia. Some of the animals described are absolutely weird and are a fascinating first even for seasoned muck divers like myself. I cannot have enough praise for this book - it is an absolute must for any serious muck diver or underwater photographer, and it fills to perfection an important void in the diving guidebooks panorama. It's also quite compact and very well bound. From now on I won't take another dive trip without taking it along - bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars A SURE WINNER WITH MUCK DIVERS AND CRITTER LOVERS
This is a spectacular book, and a very useful one for every self-respecting Indo-Pacific muck diver and macro critter lover. For ANY diver, in fact. On the cover it curiously says "Underwater Malaysia" But the inside actually covers a much broader area, from the Eastern Indian Ocean to the Western Pacific, so it's really helpful also if you're diving Thailand, Indonesia, Borneo, the Philippines, PNG or even parts of Australia. I believe this is the first diving ID guidebook entirely dedicated to small Indo-Pacific reef animals (ie those incredibly colorful clownfish, gobies, cleaner shrimps, nudibranchs and the like) - and what a winner it is! What makes it unique for me is the number of rare reef species featured and the amazing color photographs. I discovered a lot of new interesting facts reading the species' descriptions, which are very informative, pleasantly written and often quite amusing, and the reproduction quality of the photos is, wow!, absolutely stunning. Some of the critters (look at those unbelievable flamboyant cuttlefish or the mating mandarinfish) seem to be about to jump out of the page! As guidebooks go, this one is a bit heavier than one would expect, but it is also quite small and easy to carry around on a boat or in a dive bag, and despite being a paperback and not a hardcover the binding looks like it will be able to take quite a beating (travelling scuba divers will know what I'm talking about here). I'm sure as an identification guide this great book can be equally useful to the marine biologist and the advanced aquarist, but as a whole it's obviously geared towards those actually diving and taking photographs in tropical waters. OK, all this does not come real cheap - but in my opinion, considering the quality of the photos and the huge amount of information in it, this book is worth its price to the last dime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating true adventures at sea and in foreign cultures told by a fine writer
Reading this terrific volume from the wonderful Library of America (we all owe this essential not-for-profit publisher our support) was one of the most fun reads I have had in quite awhile.Richard Henry Dana, Jr. was a terrific writer and these autobiographical books of his journeys at sea are more interesting and full of adventure than most books of fiction. No wonder they sold so well during his lifetime and beyond. You should get this volume and enjoy reading about life as a working sailor at sea on a sailing ship (and as a passenger on steamers in the later books) during the middle portion of the nineteenth century. It is fascinating.Really!
5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome and strongly recommended addition to both academic and community library collections
Richard Henry Dana, Jr. was a 19th century author whose writings about his experiences as a common seaman on a merchant ship were immensely popular. Now The Library of America has compiled his writings into a single volume under the knowledgeable editorship of Thomas Philbrick (Professor Emeritus of English, University of Pittsburgh). The writings include "Two years Before the Mast & Other Voyages: A Personal Narrative of Life at Sea"; "To Cuba and Back: A Vacation Voyage"; and "Journal of a Voyage Round the World, 1859-1860". Enhanced with a Chronology, "Note on the Texts", and "Notes", Dana is printed on acid free paper and is a welcome and strongly recommended addition to both academic and community library collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars The beginnings
Dutton's is a good intro for anyone who dreams of being a sailor, or actually intends to do something about it someday. It is arranged in logical style and the material is presented in straightforward and easily understandable terms.Such details as tides, currents & piloting as well as the more esoteric matters of Hyperbolic, Celestial and Bathymetric Navigation are explained.Having finished Dutton's, the actual or would-be sailor/navigator will be ready to pick up a copy of Bowditch and head down to the sea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring role model
I love this book! It's a great story of how sports can shape your life in a positive way. Swimmers and non-swimmers alike will be inspired by Jenny's story. This great book is now available as an e-book for those of you who can't find a copy of the original printing. You can order here from amazon.com, the isbn is B0001GDOUQ.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Jenny dealt with the negative peer pressure
Fast Lane To Victory is the third in Wish Publishing's outstanding "Anything You Can Do...New Sports Heroes For Girls" series and the story of swim champion Jenny Thompson. Swimming was what Jenny like best, but when her friends at school started to tease her and call her "tomboy" and "Too Tall Thompson", she felt the pressures placed on a lot of young girls to conform to social norms of what was "proper" for girls. Jenny dealt with the negative peer pressure and became so successful as an athlete that she came to be called the "Fastest Swimmer in the World". Also very highly recommended for school and community library collections are the first two volumes in this superbly presented and inspiring sports oriented series for girls: A Drive To Win: The Story Of Nancy Lieberman (40-8, ...) and Sword Of A Champion: The Story Of Sharon Monplaisir (39-4, ...). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Endearing Ocean Story
What an endearing story about the ocean. As an avid SCUBA diver, I loved the idea of a baby whale following a swimmer along the coast because it lost its mother.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book for everyone
This is a great book.Easy to read and it paints a beautiful story of one woman's experience.I could not put it down and wanted to read the end first to see what happened.I passed it on to my husband, 11 year old son and 14 year old daughter. It is a nice book with a nice story. Not too many of those books out there now. Will make a great gift for anyone who loves to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Take a pass on this one
The idea behind this book was a good one and the reason that I purchased it in the first place. The opportunity to swim with a baby whale in the wild is something many of us only dream about, yet Ms. Cox got to experience it firsthand and it makes sense that she would want to share that story.Unfortunately, this book does not get the job done.It is so poorly written that I had to force myself to keep turning the pages.I kept hoping that maybe I just needed to get used to her writing style, but there is no style... it's just written badly. The narration is often choppy, the paragraphs don't flow, and much of the detail about the ocean seems a bit over the top.As one other reviewer put it, it's as if every detail of her every swim in the ocean was combined into that one day.Not very realistic. If you are going to enjoy this book at all, perhaps a little suspension of disbelief is in order.Whole sections are just plain boring, and to add insult to injury, the illustration on the front of the book is not that of a gray whale (the species that Cox swims with in the book). It's a sperm whale.A small thing, yes, and a decision made probably more for marketing purposes than out of ignorance, but it still serves to make the overall package even less honest or appealing. After plodding through about half the book, I finally quit and returned it for a full refund.Save your money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you nautically obsessed?
Subtitled Insights and Esoterica for the Nautically Obsessed, this book is a direct hit on its intended audience.Read it once through quickly, then enjoy it over and over again like a favorite song, and you will learn an amazing amount about every sort of boat an individual is likely to own or dream about. Gerr covers design and construction, sails and motors, and boats from homemade paddleboat to liveaboard oceangoing cruiser either motor and/or sail, and everything in between. He covers more about boats than you could imagine he would, and writes wonderfully.5-0 out of 5 stars Wealth of Practical Knowledge
Love the book.It is full of "Rules of Thumb" that can save tons of time when trying to design a boat or solve a problem. The techniques shown are great for practical application. The author has an uncanny ability to teach complex subjects in a down to earth easy to understand manner.Highly recommended for boatman, yacht designers, marine engineers and naval architects.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Reading for Boat Nuts
While not as technical (unfortunately) as the author's The Elements of Boat Strength it does contain a wealth of information for the curious. The book is a collection of magazine articles but Mr. Gerr must have done a lot of editing-they flow together nicely.Quite readable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Duke" : A great book
This book is a gem, a pithy, accessible and colourful distillation of a complex life and memory. It's beautifully written, designed and produced, with good use of rare photographs and images. The inclusion of endnotes, photo credits, further reading pointers and an index enhances the book, which has the distinction of appealing to both the lay reader as an introduction to 'the Duke' and to the historian who seeks a condensed reference to Kahanamoku's life and context. The book is a reminder of the need for a full biography that considers his continued importance and meaning along with his vita.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hawaii's Sovereign Of The Seas Remembered
Until Joseph Brennan's Duke: The Life Story of Duke Kahanamoku (1994) is reprinted or another comparable book is made available, the sporting world's great interest in Duke Kahanamoku, Olympic star and the greatest surfing avatar of the 20th century, may be satisfied by Sandra Kimberley Hall's compact Duke: A Great Hawaiian (2004), a brief but beautifully illustrated overview of the champion's life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enduring Aloha
The Y2K millennial issue of Surfer magazine featured on its cover the formal portrait of a young Duke Kahanamoku with the caption "Surfer of the Century."Perhaps you've been to Kuhio beach at Waikiki and visited the Duke statue; maybe even left a flower lei draped on his arms. Most people also take a few minutes to consider the inscription that's written there, imagining what Aloha could mean if we each lived our life that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars What you need to know
Similar to other books in the series. Style wise, this is the opposite of The Sailmaker's Apprentice by Marino. This is not a book to pick up while sitting by the fire sipping tea. It is a great reference book with concise "how to" information. Good explanations of both materials and techniques - including safety.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
For someone who is considering cruising in a Cat with a female spouse, you should read this... The wife does seem "whiney" but my wife also read the book and said she could relate to "her feelings.".... So it may help you know what to expect in such an experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sailing Promise
I really enjoyed this book.I am fearful of water and I found Alaynes determination very inspiring. Not only did she have to deal with her fear of the unknown, but her husband was no help when her fears were at their worst!2-0 out of 5 stars Great Wanderlust... Just Leave Home Without the Author
I thought that the author did a good job of putting us all in the cockpit as they sail the world. However, while this book may recieve 5 stars from husband/wife teams who love to hear endless stories about the ups and downs that sailing can have on a relationship and on a persons mental health, for me it was more of a soap opera than a sailing book. While the mental aspects of both crew and captain should be heavily discussed in such a book, this one lacked any shread of detail about (1. the different cultures visited, 2. SAILING THE WORLD IN A CATAMARAN) My main objective was to hear about the plausibility of sailing the world in a Cat.. To be honest, I would have tossed the author overboard within the first 2 months of the trip. ... Read more

I just could not wait to get my hands on this book, which made the read all the more disappointing.Basically, Technical Diving in Depth is a poorly organized mishmash of Dr. Wienke's ground breaking published scientific work pulled together with a smattering of useful diving information to make a book.It also includes a lot of material almost completely irrelevant to diving such as a chapter on "Gravitation and Solar Radiation"; there is even a section on rotational precession, but the real gem is the section on stellar evolution.Yeah, I always ponder stellar evolution 80 feet down on a steep coral wall.Much of the material in the latter part of the book is a grab-bag of the basic knowledge one would acquire in the course of a obtaining a bachelors degree the physical sciences presented in Reader's Digest form.Is Dr. Wienke trying to impress us with equations, does he think he is writing a comprehensive physics book?He accomplishes neither.
4-0 out of 5 stars Way useful, rediculously academic

3-0 out of 5 stars do you have the education required to understand?
The book was owned by a fellow diver and I was able to read it during a drive to a distant dive site. I had plenty of distractions but was able to stay attached to most of the content. Aside from requiring an extensive background foundation in Science, Chemistry, Diving in general, and High-Level Math, I was able to comprehend most of the written material.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide to the best diving destinations
This is an excellent guide for choosing a dive destination. My wife and I have had the good fortune to travel to a number of excellent dive locations in the past several years and this guide gets it right.Be forewarned, it makes no effort to be a comprehensive guide to the entire world (for that, try Dive by Monty Halls). But it does cover the most intriguing dive locations, so it is heavy on Asia and the South Pacific and light on the Caribbean and has no coverage of temperate destinations, such as California or British Columbia.
5-0 out of 5 stars Diving the world
My wife Sue & I have been very lucky to dive some of the best diving locations in the world, all of which are featured in this excellent and very readable book. First of all the descriptions are spot on and you can tell that the text is taken from the experience of actually doing the dive or visiting the area, not just researching it (unlike so many guides). The book is not just a travel or dive guide, it's more like a wish list to the best diving in the world. If you are lucky enough to be able to do this sort of diving then I think owning this book is about as important as owning a mask. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a dive book that doesn't "rough it"
Fantastic guidebook for those of us who don't mind paying a little extra for service and comfort.Unlike other books that concentrate on single or regional locations, Tim Simond has spent 2 years seeking out not only the best dive sites, but the best lodging and operators at those locations. Forget about trying to decide where to go on your next dive trip, just randomly open the book, and go!!! Tim has done all of the hard work for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Easily-Readable Book That Makes You Want To GO Diving NOW!
In the introduction, Simond stresses that Dive in Style is not a book about dedicated "dive hotels." Rather, it's a book about "wonderful resorts" for families...that cater to divers as well as tennis players, hikers, beach-lovers, etc. That said, however, each of the resorts Simond visits has a dedicated dive shop either on the premises or adjacent to the property. Moreover, four of the destinations he details are liveaboards. Ultimately, despite his protests, it's a book about destinations that may not cater exclusively to divers, but who consider divers among their top priorities.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best, and one of a kind, the bee's knees.
Nothing else to say about it. It's a classic. And actually, I like the philosophical raves too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sailing with an Attitude
Reading the first six chapters of this book is like listing to a teenager who has all of life's answers. If only the rest of the world would get onboard. However chapters seven through the end is a gold mine of sailing knowledge from his sailing life experiences. These chapters will encourage you in every way possible. Jerome "Jay" writes from what he believes and captures in print every aspect of the sailing life. This is certainly a must read for any sailor interested in true seamanship and wants to do more then entertain some friends on the weekends. It is definite a source book that I will reference again and again. Even those who only occasionally sail will improve there sailing skill upon reading these chapters. As Jay says "most of seamanship happens within 50 feet of the dock".
5-0 out of 5 stars Fitzgerald makes you think.
Just dump almost all your other sailing "how to" books in the bin - Fitzgerald will show you the folly of buying into the overhyped, over commercialsed, unnecessary expense as espoused in the sailing magazines and "regular" sailing books on the market.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great do-it-yourself book for replacing boat interiors
Naujok started with a bare production hull for a 34 foot sailboat, and finished it to standards equal to any production yacht.Along the way he took great photos showing the details of each step. The illustrations are excellent.A great feature of this book is that it systematically takes you through the entire fitting-out process.
4-0 out of 5 stars Book review
A well-written step-by-step guide for refitting a sailing vessel. The photographs were excellent.Mr Naujok included many helpful hints on projects.I had hoped for more detailed instruction on redoing headliner and ideas for modernizing an old interior than what was covered in this book. However, it is a valuable reference book for do-it-yourselfers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book that will help yo build a Beautiful Wooden Kayak
This book is a complete presentation of what you will beed to do to build a stich and glue kayak, beginning to end.The designs in the boat are suitable for beginner and intermediate paddlers.People with even modest amounts of woodworking aptuitude will be able to build boats from this book if you can make the time and money committments, in my experience begin at 100 hours and $500.Tool requirements are modest, mostly hand tools, and are discussed in the book.4-0 out of 5 stars Great book with only one gripe...
My one gripe is that the plans included with the book are close to useless. They're on tiny paper, and need to be severely enlarged before they can be used.5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable read for the novice boat builder.
I'm planning to build one of Chesapeake Light Craft's Mill Creek kayaks this winter. I've been reading the CLC forums, the many customer web sites and the back issues of Wooden Boat magazine with articles on building CLC boats, but the most helpful read so far has been this book.Read more
