4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the caning instructions alone
I bought this book paired with the more advanced Canoecraft book and really couldn't be happier with both of them.Having read the Canoecraft book first I was left with some questions reguarding technical aspects of boatbuilding that this book answered wonderfully. The approach the author takes reflects one of an experienced teacher explaining the task with an eye toward common mistakes and how to avoid them. While the finished product as outlined is a bit heavy and lacking in elegance, as compared to the Canoecraft boat, I plan to utilize both books in the construction of my canoe.(Please note that the heaviness comes from extra fiberglass reinforcement that is a real necessity in the rocky streams of Maine, the author's state, and not so much here in the Midwest.) The real bonus, aside from the caning instructions which are wonderful, is the fact that you are also getting scale plans for eight boats which can be scanned, scaled and printed full size at your local copyshop. The project is easily completed by anyone who is remotely aquainted with woodworking techniques and in many instances the author explains multiple methods of doing the same step with a list of the pros and cons of each method.Excellent book to buy for your first canoebuilding experience.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Gilpatrick's book
About 12 years ago my dad and I built the wabnaki canoe using Mr Gilpatrick's book, and this year I built a Prospector design using Canoecraft, at least in part.I would like to add my opinion abut the relative merits of these books.
3-0 out of 5 stars If you liked this book, you'll LOVE Canoe Craft by Moores
I'm truly surprised at all the 5-star ratings this book has earned here.I checked this book out at the library and it was the first book I read about strip-built anything.Even at that time I was shocked at some of the shoddy work shown in the pictures (done by teenage shop class students, not the author).

4-0 out of 5 stars The Yukon: Lonesome Except for the Ghosts
Dan O'Neill drops his canoe into the Yukon River near Dawson City (Canada) and paddles downriver in search of the Alaskan homesteader and the subsistence lifestyle familiar to many from John McPhee's book, "Coming Into the Country."
5-0 out of 5 stars Like Coming Into the Country Part 2
It seems that ever since John McPhee's Coming into the Country came out in the seventies, all stories of living in the Alaskan wilderness are compared to it.This book in many ways revisits that book and lets you know what happened to the self sufficient trappers and homesteaders that McPhee met in the seventies. And apparently they are gone.

I still haven't had a chance to use the tips from this book, since our trip to Greece with our one-year-old is planned for a few months from now. I can say that reading so many real-life, much more complicated examples of Ms. Jeffrey's family's own travels have made planning a few weeks in Greece seem like no big deal, though. 5-0 out of 5 stars World class book for world class adventures...with children
There are many travel books on the market, and there are many travel books for those who have children. This books stands out because the author actually took her kids on wonderful, real "adventures," not justtame camping trips in the U.S.She and her husband traveled to remoteplaces (Morocco, Spain, Bali, Nepal, New Zealand...), kids in tow, andshare the experience with us through text and photos. They sailed, biked, hiked, and drove about, and lived for several weeks in differentcountries.Read more

Easy to get Lost in this Gripping Narrative....
4-0 out of 5 stars Gripping Account
This fascinating book tells two stories, of two men who lost their way on separate journeys into the north woods. Its structure is engaging: it tells the two stories side by side in alternating chapters. It details their peril, their survival efforts, and the search and rescue operations.
5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
My title says it all, but it bears repeating: I really did love this book. It's interesting, well written, and utterly riveting.I am a sleep-deprived mom to a toddler and a baby, but this book kept me up at night reading well past the hour when I should have been asleep.I read about this book in my alumni magazine (like the author, I am a graduate of the U of MN).When I read that the book chronicles not just one man lost in the wilderness, but two, each in different years and circumstances, I wondered how the author would manage to tell both stories without confusing the reader. He does it masterfully. The stories of the two men are woven seamlessly together, in alternating chapters, and the structure adds beautifully to the suspense. This is a terrific book.I highly recommend that you buy it right now. ... Would you ride a raft with extreme water or would you climb a very slippery? Would you even any of them? This book is about kinds that think that they are so tough but have so many fears, and not even willing to tell anybody about it. Five kids go on an adventure that will leave them scarred for life. Some books are hard to come by, and this book is one of them. One of the characters on this book that pop out to me was a girl named Star. She is always joking, singing, and all other crazy stuff, but when it comes to helping others she is shy. So like I said before you can be very outgoing but have so many insecurities and not say anything to anybody. The more and more you read you see that star is getting over her shyness. This book is the one to when you feel stressed and insecure I give this book five stars. My recommendation is the best.

Would it scare you to run the Grand Canyon with no supervision and only experiencing one whitewater rafting run? It doesn't scare seven kids from Discovery Unlimited, known as Hoods in the Woods by these same kids. When they steal the gear and start downriver, water isn't the only thing that gets rough.
5-0 out of 5 stars Down River
Down River is probably one of Will Hobbs's best selling books he has written. The story is very exiting. It's about juvenile delinquents going on some hard adventures throughout Nevada and Arizona. I like this book a lot. One reason is the adventures they go on, because their lives are at stake every time, whether it is climbing a huge mountain or white water rafting through dangerous river.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the beginning builder
I used this book extensively along with my regular plans book when building my Cosine Wherry. The well done illustrations and explanations helped answer many a question on "how" or "why" do do a particular building task. A highly recommended book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive book on strip building
I have just completed Mac McCarthy's Wee Lassie using this book. The amount of detail in the book answered all my questions and some of the techniques (like reinforcing the deck with thin marine plywood) was better than using carlins and stripping the deck onto the carlins. I had no trouble building the boat. I built the boat with no staples or nails. Her stapleless building technique was straight forward and easy to do. The most difficult part was beveling the inside stems. I would not bevel the entire stem at once, but bevel as I stripped. The only part of McCarthy's book worth having are the mold patterns for the canoes. This book is the one you need to actually build the canoe.

    Editorial Review

Some sports--the solitary ones, in particular--are simply more prone to mysticism and mystery than others. Golf, certainly. Long-distance running, of course. Fishing. Climbing. Each has a literature that confronts the essence of its lonely pursuit and explores the way the solitude and self-discipline these sports demand grow the spirit and fill the competitor. Lambert's graceful reflection on rowing is a lovely addition to the genre, part memoir, part narrative, part celebration of a relatively arcane endeavor, and utterly provocative. The superficial journey here is over water; the real one is internal. "Like Einstein," he writes, "we wish to know God's thoughts. We shall attempt to pry them loose with an oar. The raw elements of the sport are our teacher: the wind and the water, the boat and its oars, our own bodies and minds." Given those elements, it's no surprise that the education is a profound one. The surprise is how accessible and appealing it turns out to be. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm buying six copies
I generally read fiction for entertainment. And, in fact, generally loathe books anywhere in a stone's throw radius of the personal development genre. However, Mind Over Water really touched me. Lambert's insights are packaged in such a way that they both are easily absobed and entertaining.I'm buying a copy for each of my closest friends with the suggestion that they read it once per year, about 5 pages at a sitting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gaack! Just when I'd given up highlighting my books. . .
"Mind Over Water" falls into the category of the memoir, highly personal and considered memories and musings. It's about rowing and, as the subtitle states: "Lessons on Life from the Art of Rowing." If you don't like this kind of book, steer clear. You also won't like "Green Thoughts: A Writer in The Garden." On the other hand, if you do like this kind of book, "Green Thoughts" is also recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars as much about self-discovery as about rowing

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique look at a specific area and history of the Lone Star State
I was very impressed with this book. Graves does so much in this enjoyable volume. As he takes a canoe trip down the Brazos near where he grew up, he shares the history of the land--both recent and not-so-recent. Through him, we learn the reality of life for the average settler on the edge of the frontier. He also seems to be detailing a life that in his time was declining and in our age is nearly completely gone. His writing is difficult to describe and unlike anything I have ever read. It flows smoothly with a combination of regional speech and erudition. As you read you feel like you are in the canoe with an incomparable guide to this region of our state. A great book that deserves to be read much more widely than it is.
5-0 out of 5 stars Goodbye to a River--Hello to the Past
As a native Texan, I grew up with the stories of the wild frontier and I'm sure that Graves did too.But he takes those stories and, with beautiful prose, shows the really hardscrabble life that folks overcame on the edge of the frontier. Not the stories of Texas Rangers, but of ordinary pioneers who made a life for themselves despite drought, snowstorms and other natural disasters. But the book is also a wonderful "painting" of a part of Texas that is rich in history and natural beauty.A must-read for anyone who wants to know what Texas was like before the arrival of air conditioning and the discovery of oil.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Good as Walden
Not since I read "Walden" has a book so moved me. If you ever loved a river, or a piece of land, or ever felt at home in the presence of Nature, then you will delight in this book. But if you are a Texan, then heaven help you, this book is nothing less than magic.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Conceit
It's a nice conceit.A great outdoor photographer sets for himself the task to taking one, but only one, photograph each and every day for an entire season.
5-0 out of 5 stars Challenge Achieved with Grace
I gave this book to my parents several years ago and still leaf slowly through its pages whenever visiting their home in northern Minnesota. For amateurs and professionals alike, his is a fascinating photographic concept: your own property? a favorite park? your family?or pet? a holiday?

5-0 out of 5 stars I normally hesitate to use this word, but...profound.
I'm a verbal type; I'd rather read a beautifully written description of a frozen lake than stare at a picture of it anytime.Even knowing that, my mother gave me this book several years ago, and I fell in love.I sat with it for hours, seeing, dreaming, and I still take it down often to do the same again. The photographer, Jim Brandenburg, set himself the challenge of taking only one photograph each day for three months, in the boreal forest where he makes his home. The result is a portrait of life as many of us can never experience it: not just "calendar shots," but pictures that show the cruelty of man, the certainty of death, the very simple beauty of a single bright leaf burning on the dark, still waters of an evening pond. Some photos are amazing in themselves and some seem ordinary in the extreme, but it is important to take them as a whole, and see what you learn from the journey. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, honest narrative about life experiences
I was truly sad to finish this book.Jill is very honest about her adventures and about the frustrating and life changing times she has had in the wilderness.Even if the reader is not an outdoorsperson, he or she will enjoy the vivid descriptions of the arctic communities, the relationship between Jill and husband Doug, the struggles Jill faces in life including her mother's battle with cancer and much more.Thank you Jill for writing such a beautiful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Adventurous, Real
I just finished reading this book.I stopped part way through, because it was so good, I didn't want to finish it yet. Now, I'm going to name it as the book of the month when I host my book club next. This book is so fresh, so in-your-marrow real, so insightful, adventurous, and breathtakingly descriptive, it defies easy categorization.Ms. Fredston is a fantastic writer, and after hearing her words for the last 286 pages in my head, I sincerely would consider it a tremendous privilege and honor to meet her in person. She has sent me on a search for the woman in me who is so wise, so calm in the face of crisis, so adaptable, so loving, and so passionate about life and living it.I know I have emerged from this reading with a sincere desire to make my life what it is I desire, instead of waiting for "someday".I am thrilled to have her voice added to the voices of other women, so few, who lead us boldly into our dreams, fears, and wildest adventures. You must read this book, and if you have a daughter in high school or college, give her one as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great read
When a non-fiction book reads like a fiction book, I know I'm in for a great treat. That is, I find myself looking for little breaks during the day when I natch a page or two to read this book, I know that I have a winner. This is also written by a women who has learned a little bit about life in her winter job as a avalanche expert in Alaska, and she brings this understanding to her passion of rowing in the polar regions. It is Jill's descriptions that are a delight to the mind because they are so well written.Although, I have never seen as ice berg or an ice field, I feel that I have some greater appreciation of the beauty and harm (yes, harm) that they are capable of doing in a split second.I remember the words of some great sage, that said that getting there is what travel is all about, versus vacation when you take a jet and lay in a lounger by the pool. ... Coupled with Building a Strip Canoe by Gil Gilpatrick this book will explain everything you need to know to craft an absolutely beautiful canoe. This book begins with a description of canoe history and follows up with desireable characteristics of various canoe designs. While the actual process is described very well, there are some technical aspects that a person with less woodworking experience would have to search elsewhere to find an explaination.I many places the author explains the best way to do a task as well as some options for alternative construction. The method described in this book really is "fine" canoebuilding. The finishing details the author desribes are what will really set your craft ahead of all other do-it-yourself canoes on the water.Keep in mind that there are no plans for actual canoes in this book.If you are someone who is experienced in "lofting" or technical drawing maybe you can make your own plans from the specs the author gives for his boats but for most people they just expect you to buy your plans from Bear Mountain Canoe or some other design house. That aside, this is an excellent book to help in the construction of any canoe and it left me absolutely jazzed to begin my own boat.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great but
Don't expect to get patterns to build a canoe with this book. All of the other reviews didn't tell you this.If you want to build one of the boats mentioned in the book you have to go to the authors website and purchase them seperately for another $69.If you want to build a boat with this added cost look at getting Stripper's Guide to Canoe-Building it has full size patterns.

5-0 out of 5 stars The revised edition is even better than the original!
I am making my fourth cedarstrip, the first three (Kipawa, Mattawa, and Chestnut Prospector) following the original edition as my guide and reference manual.I ordered the new edition partly because I'd worn out the original, but even after having built three cedarstrip canoes, I found new information and ideas in the revised edition making it worthwhile. The new edition has improved and expanded information about various building tips, jigs to make the building go better, a new section on staple-less building (the style I've used for all four canoes), an expanded section on canoe repair, and a new chapter on paddle making, among other improvements.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Northern Woods Canoeists
There's really only two things worth doing in Minnesota: One, canoeing the Boundary Waters/Quetico during Spring, Summer, and Fall; Two, THINKING about canoeing the Boundary Waters/Quetico during Winter. For the latter, this book is the gateway to paradise.Sevareid and Port have the true spirit of adventurers, the love-bug for the North Woods and her bevy of streams, rivers, and lakes, and Sevareid effectively tells his now-classic tale of how he and his friend drank deeply of all her treasures--complete with the axiomatic mistakes, mishaps, surfiet of discomfitures, and, alas, irresistible beauty that she provides to all who avail themselves of her wonders.Like St. Augustine, let us "Take up and read."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Insanity and Necessity of Adventure
Walter Port and (Arnold) Eric Sevareid took an amazing trip that they started by skipping some of their high school finals so they could get the boat they could afford. Though the project appeared to have been Port's pet, it was Sevareid who came up with the way to fund it: writing about it for the Minneapolis Star. It was clear that once the project began both of them were truly enthralled by it and could not be put off. The tale is told simply, but with a clear affection for all of the people who helped them try to reach their goal, even though few of the people who helped were confident that these young men could make it or were even very encouraging.
4-0 out of 5 stars canoeing with the cree
I thought that this book was a great wiild life adventure. It's about two boys going aginst their odds in a canoeing trip from St. Paul Minneapolis all the way to the Hudson Bay. Nobody thinks that they will make it. The two young boys come close to death many times. They almost get lost and find their way thanks to many kind people that help them overcome the impossible and they make it. They encounter Indians and some very nice people, and this makes their trip much easier even though they really struggle through all those miles. That's why I think this book was a good book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I bought this book for my 3 kids, ages 7, 5 and 3, and we really enjoyed it. I heard about the author in my Literature Course, and wanted to read a book from her. I loved the drawings and the rhyming, which made a perfect book for a group reading. My kids enjoyed it too, specially with all those animals in the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a wonderful book. It is very unique, featuring animals of the Northwoods such as moose and bear. It is a joy to read with an memorable cadence. Your child will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A darling little story
This is such a fun little story. My three year old twin girls just love it.I will read it to them many times a day, and they always bust into laughter. They think all the animals are so funny when they want to take a ride in the One-dog Canoe. Great story for all children. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't go into the Okefenokee without it!
My tattered and stained copy has been an integral part in planning each of my six trips into the Okefenokee.I personally could do without all of the details on the various plant species but I love the in-depth descriptions on what is around virtually every turn.Traveling from Virginia, I could have also used more information on area camping and lodging. In addition, I love fishing on my trips into the Okefenokee but the book essentially ignores the topic. While the book could be improved upon, it is a fascinating and invaluable resource for anyone interested in experiencing the magic of an Okefenokee wilderness canoe trip.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is an average book from a national publisher
If you really want to learn about the plants and animals from an author who has been raised in Georgia, please take a look at the Highroad Guide to the Georgia Coast & Okefenokee by Richard J. Lenz.

4-0 out of 5 stars A MUST if you are a "First-Timer" to the Swamp
The maps in the back of the book are from satellite images.I found the canoe trail information on these maps far superior to the information offered by the Fish and Wildlife "free" maps. The book is smallenough to put in a plastic bag, and strap to your gear in the canoe so thatyou can know right where you are, even without a GPS.Read more

An absolutely superb resource for paddling in southern Wisconsin. So many rivers and lakes and so little time - this book helps you figure out where to spend that rare resource - your time on the water.

5-0 out of 5 stars Contains a Wealth of Information
I was happily surprised at the amount of information in this book.I was particularly looking for information on kayaking Wisconsin rivers that have few rapids.(recreational family touring)This book contained excellent maps, information on where to enter and exit rivers, areas that may need to be portaged, what types of rapids you will encounter (all the different classes of rapids), what you will see, etc.I am very happy with this book.I also purchased PADDLING NORTHERN WISCONSIN: 82 GREAT TRIPS BY CANOE AND KAYAK. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I want a red canoe!
In first grade my daughter's school had a "Blue Book Bag" program: each week the students brought home a different book and a journal in a blue book bag. This was my favorite book of the year (I am a kindergarten teacher and was an English major, if that holds any weight). There is something charming and dreamy about Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe, which is a child's journal of a canoe trip.It was so easy to slip into the joyous adventure of the journey--feeling the heat of the afternoon, the beauty of the jumping fish, the quiet damp of the mist. The relationships between the adults and children implied a long history of love and confidence in each other. In addition, the book has text in unexpected places, so it is visually fun. There are a couple of recipes as part of the narrative and directions on how to tie a Two-Half Hitch knot, so you if you and your children really love the book, you can extend the experience. In the Accelerated Reader program, this book is third grade level, but my preschool daughter also liked it very much, so it can appeal to a wide range of ages (maybe 4-9?)Mother's Day is this Sunday, and I have told my girls that for Mother's Day I want a red canoe--or at least a hardback copy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for primary age kids while studying rivers.
We used this book as a spring board for an environmental unit. We planned mapping, canoe safety, first aide safety, camping and landforms. We also planned a field trip to a local park with a creek and set up stations thatinvolved the different aspects of the book. We used newspaper ads and hadthe children decide what would be needed for a canoe trip and tied it inwith math, teaching money. This was a great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK!
I purchased Dangerous River: Adventure on the Nahanni to use as research for my latest release, The River, an exciting and terrifying techno-thriller that takes place on the Nahanni River.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent look at early 20th century wilderness expeditions.
Patterson makes a 200 mile snowshoe trek in 50 below weather to pick upthe mail seem like slightly unusual walk to the post office!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Far North adventure you'll never forget!
"Dangerous River" is one of the finest Far North adventures ever written. R. M. Patterson and his partner Gordon Matthews were the last of a breed of men who tackled the Far North with nothing but stamina, courage, and consummate skill with rifle, pack and canoe. Trapping and searching for gold in the legendary South Nahanni River country in the 1920's, Patterson describes their adventures in language that makes the reader yearn to see one the premier rivers of the world. Patterson's style is laced with wonderfully dry British humor as well as a poet's skill in describing the breathtaking landscapes. You feel as though you're right beside him throughout his adventures and hungering to go there yourself. You can't ask more a writer and his book than that! ... Read more
