5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome!!!!!!!!!
This book was GREAT! Bethany Hamilton shares the story of her family, friends, and what happened to her on Halloween morning in 2003. She does a good job showing her faith in Jesus, and made it clear that it was one of the reasons she survived. This book had plenty of action, enough history and extra info to explain it, and an easy going, fun writing style. It was readable, and written so that it is clear Bethany (not professional writers) wrote the book. I really enjoyed this. This is a good book for anyone, old or young, Christian or nonChristian. Get it! This book is AWESOME!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Soul Surfer Review
This book is a true story about a 13 year old girl named Bethany Hamilton who was attacked by a shark while surfing near her home in Hawaii. During the attack she lost her arm to a 15 foot shark. But instead of letting the attack ruin her life, she got right back on her surfboard as soon as she could after the accident. Today she competes in professional surfing competitions even though she only has one arm. When she lost her arm she said it didn't hurt at all. If I were her I would have to say it hurt. Her best friend Alana was right next to Bethany when the shark attacked her and she has been a great friend to Bethany through the whole recovery. She also mentions that her parents and her brothers supported her through everything that she went through or will be going through in her life. I learned a lot from this book. I learned not to ever give up on your dreams and to keep faith in yourself.Another thing is always try to keep a positive mind about anything you want to do. I also learned how important having your family and having their support is and that having faith in God can help you get through difficult times in your life. I loved this book and would recommend it to everyone. It is a great family book. The book is intended for young teenage girls. But is a great book for both boys and girls.I think people of all ages can learn a lot by reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Journal of 1880's travel through the Adirondacks
This is a compilation of stories written by George Washington Sears (a.k.a. Nessmuk) for Forest and Stream Magazine in the years 1880-1883. He paddled different custom built ultralight Rushton canoes each year, starting south of present day Old Forge, through the Fulton Chain toRaquette and reaching as far as Long Lake, Little Tupper Lake and beyond. His chronicles are enjoyable, easily readable tales of life and travel inthe wilderness of the 1880's Adirondacks. It is full of details which areinteresting to the student of Adirondack history. For instance, he allowedme to pinpoint the year of construction of the Grove Hotel (later known asthe Deerland Hotel) on Long Lake, and to give me background on it'soriginal owner. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
This book has helped me with my windsurfing technique(or the lack there'of before I bought this book). I think that it is probably the next best thing next to a lesson, or ten. I would recommend it to anyone with a desire to windsurf, it helped me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is perfect for beginners to advanced
This book covers all bases sections in the windsurfing, including how to choose an equipment, first steps, what you have to eat and tehnics for advanced riders as water start, jibe curve and etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Instruction & Complete Intro To Windsurfing
I took one windsurfing lesson and then picked up this book. It was perfect. I have advanced very far simply be getting on the water and constantly reffering back to Mr. Bornhoft's detailed instruction. No other lessons have been necessary so far. The author provides excellent photos and diagrams to illustrate the moves and his descriptions are easy to follow and helpfull. I also found the author's coverage of equipment to be very usefull. If you want a solid intro to windsurfing, you want this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy The Big Drop
The Big Drop is by John Log.This book is a wonderful surfing book full of very colorful stories told by the people that had surfed the waves, or were there at the moment if the person had died. The way the people tell the stories make it feel like you are there feeling their pain.If you do not feel like reading the book then you might just want to get the movie Riding Giants.About fifty percent of the movie Riding Giants is in the book.In the book there is a colorful picture almost every chapter of the people riding the wave.I would defiantly recommend the book to anyone, especially if you like to surf. The book also teaches you a lot about surfing vocabulary and even has a couple pages at the end that are the glossary, in case you don't know the terms of surfing. The Big Drop shows the dangers of surfing and makes you wonder why people even risk their life just for a little thrill.I would give this book 9 out of 10, because there are some stories in there that aren't very interesting compared to others in the book. There is only a couple of the stories that are not as interesting, so it does not take away from the book at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Props for the original extreme sport
Provides great insight on the pioneers of the sport, but doesn't come across like a history lesson. It makes you understand the ballz it takes to paddle into a wave the size of an apartment building, along with the consequences those guys have faced.4-0 out of 5 stars Get inside the Big Wave Surfing Culture
Not just a surfing book but focusing on the Big Wave surfing crew, that elite group of athletes that live to challenge the ocean's fury. This is a collection of short stories but it does a great job of covering the total history of Big Wave surfing, particularly paying attention to the heroes of the 50s and 60s the water skills necessary to challenge large waves. With complete coverage and analysis of all big wave sites and legends, I can't imagine what it left unturned.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stephen P's First Guide
I have been cruising the Bahamas for over 30 years. For all these long times there was just one cruising guide available. And it was quite limited in scope. The along came Stephen Pavlidis. He has singlehandedly upgraded the quality and safetyof Bahamas cruising . His Exumas Cruising Guide is the most complete information you can get for that area. I wouldn't think of cruising the Exumas without it. Stephen Crow, K4CPX

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it
I have cruised the Exumas four winters on my Jeanneau 41.I wouldn't think of doing it without Steven's wonderful book.He includes, for example, many chartlets not to be found in any other guide.Hence, I wasable to find anchorages not well known (and which had, as a result, morelobster!).5-0 out of 5 stars Essential and Comprehensive
I found the book to be the Bible for getting in and around the Exuma Cays.More importantly, the book nicely deals with the history, geography, flora and fauna of the cays. There is no way that a person should consider sailing, motoring or paddling into the Exumas without this book in hand. Too bad it was not printed on waterproof paper and bound with stainless steel staples. If your headedfor the Exumas be sure to read and bring a copy along. It might also help to secure it in a large zip lock plastic bag. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit of a let down
Earlier dive guides I have used have come from the Globetrotter series - who do not have a guide for Barbados, which is what I was looking for. Coming to the "Complete Diving Guide" after the high standards of Globetrotter is something of a disappointment. There is nothing wrong with the book in terms of the content it is providing - it gives information on the sites, some (though by no means all) dive schools, and a little background on the islands. However, the writing style is very narrative - think "what I did on my diving holiday this summer" type essays. The presentation is also a bit dated. It is not a bad guide by any means, but if Globetrotter do get around to publishing on the area, it is almost certain to be a better bet.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The mind is supreme and the mind is falliable..."
This book is most definitely required reading for divers at any level, but especially those who dive wrecks. It's been said that the Andrea Doria is the Mt. Everest for divers in terms of sheer difficulty and, based on the narratives in this book, I'm inclined to agree.

5-0 out of 5 stars Could NOT Put This Book Down
I agree with several of the other reviewers with regard to the page-turning quality of this book.A fascinating, deadly, frightening, solemn, lesson-worthy book about scuba diving, its dangers and appeal.I am a scuba diver who is extremely conservative and would never dream of diving to the depth these people had to dive to bring up china and other artifacts from the sunken Andrea Doria.I am in awe of the bravery and expertise that it takes to do such a deep and complicated wreck dive, but I was also very well warned that, even the best divers, with hundreds of dives to their credit, ended up dead diving this wreck. The Andrea Doria has captured the imagination of many divers. It was heartbreaking and frightening to see how quickly good, practised divers lost their lives in their pursuit of "knicknacks".This book is a warning to all divers, and a can't-put-down read for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting even for those who DON'T deep sea dive
I will disagree with 'Publisher's Weekly' and say this book is quite interesting for one who enjoys reading about ships, sunken or otherwise.I will agree w/ 'Publishers Wkly' in respect to 'We band of brothers-divers-etc etc' did not come across as appealing to me personally, however I am sure the author is simply seeking to bind a common thread with those who DO deep wreck dive, and he has hit his mark with them I am fairly sure.He gives wonderful accounts of what the 'Doria' looks like today, although I'll admit, I would not have held it against him to elaborate just a little more. All in all, I thought the book was very well written, and delivered on all levels.I can see how it would not appeal to one who is an 'indoor guy' and prefers spending his time basket weaving. If you are a guy that at least likes to play a couple of sets of tennis, yet that is your 'sports limit' this book could even appeal to you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Review but Not Enough Practical Information
This book gives a reasonably good review about boating (but not about boat ownership, see below). It discusses things like safety, navigation, anchoring and docking.Much of it was based on larger sailboats although some of it does apply to boats of all sizes.I was disappointed at the illustrations and pictures that look like they date back to 1970.No color pictures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Greatbook for those completely new to boating.
The title says it all...
5-0 out of 5 stars Great summary of what you REALLY need to know!
You can wade through several 200+ page books and get some of the information contained in this one, but this book gives you what you really need to know (and the information is a lot easier to discern than from those big books). So many beginner's books don't really deal with what you have to know, such as docking, anchoring, rules of the road, reading a chart, use of the radio, heavy weather, etc. This is not a "how to sail book." But sailors, like all boaters, must know the knowledge of seamanship contained in this book to be safe and enjoy themselves and unfortunately many on the water do not.I've sailed for many years, have taken several classes, etc. and this is the book I recommend to everyone new to boating or for a review. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nat's all that. What a legend
Humble family beginings to world champion, husband to father, party animal to entrepreneur. Through all this Nat Young was destined to be a surfer and one of the best the world would ever see. This book is a fascinating combination of surfing history (Australian in particular) and the history of a man who pushed to get every ounce of enjoyment out of life. This is a very informative, yet light hearted book with more than its share of incredible surfing tales. From surfing the best waves the world has to offer, the early days of the world tour and the unavoidable changes of the 70's. This book is nothing short of the ultimate life style a surfer could wish for. Reading this book inspired me on more than one occassions to get out in the waves and make the most of my life. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for the whitewater enthusiast.
Mssrs. Walbridge and Sundmacher cover the subject of whitewater rescuewell. It is geared toward the recreational boater, but is also a valuabletool for the public safety officer (police, sheriff, fire/rescue,SAR,ranger, etc.). It does not cover reading whitewater, since assumes thereader is already a boater of some sort.It does present the most commonproblems and solutions. In addition it covers use of the tools needed tosafely execute timely rescues.Easy reading, excellent photographs anddrawings illustrate the points well. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great guide with specific details and great photos would reccomend to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but could be better
The first 'World Stormrider Guide' (Volume 1) to world surf spots was a little bit better than this one, primarily because both the pictures and quality of the surf breaks listed were consistently better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
What a total waste of time this book was. I read, or should I say endured, about 60-pages of it before wanting to throw it out a closed window. No story-line, just some incoherent ramblings. He would have been better to take the year off and do a creative writing course.

2-0 out of 5 stars Over Rated
This book is ok - not excellent - if you give it 5 stars you really need to read some more books. It is somewhat interesting in describing the life of a surfer but its extremely repetitive, it drags on and its lacking in any action and that certain something that seperates the wheat from the chafe.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dreams and books.
Look, If you want to read a book about the important aspects of life, more important than making money and going to school (sure it seems impossible and even I have fallen into the monotonous doldrum of capitalist existance) read this memoir. It will teach you life.I've read it 3 times over the past year and each time my yearning for the coast grows.Unfortunately I'm stuck in Cleveland, Ohio and all I have are dreams and books. ...
