5-0 out of 5 stars Kayak:The Animated Manual of Intermediate and Advanced Whitewater Technique
Great book! The best book I have found for those looking to understand whitewater.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you paddle rivers, you wantthis book!
Most introductory paddling books begin with equipment and clothing, run through basic strokes and present a couple of simple moves, eddying out and peeling out, for example, with some fundamental river information thrown in at the end.The assumption is that you will learn what you need to know on the water.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for any level
Nealy does a great job of conveying his to-the-point descriptions in terminology that even the most novice of paddler can understand.Keep in mind that this book is geared towards the paddler that has been in the water a few times, but it is still a great book if you have never even sat in a kayak. As far as a read, it is great. This is a real page turner with tons of diagrams.I had absolutly no question about what the author was trying to say.Overall, it is an excellent book and well worth the money ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Journal of 1880's travel through the Adirondacks
This is a compilation of stories written by George Washington Sears (a.k.a. Nessmuk) for Forest and Stream Magazine in the years 1880-1883. He paddled different custom built ultralight Rushton canoes each year, starting south of present day Old Forge, through the Fulton Chain toRaquette and reaching as far as Long Lake, Little Tupper Lake and beyond. His chronicles are enjoyable, easily readable tales of life and travel inthe wilderness of the 1880's Adirondacks. It is full of details which areinteresting to the student of Adirondack history. For instance, he allowedme to pinpoint the year of construction of the Grove Hotel (later known asthe Deerland Hotel) on Long Lake, and to give me background on it'soriginal owner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Dowd has a way of sounding like your dad and the tone of the book is very relaxed and easy to follow. It claims to be pitched at intermediate kayakers starting out on expeditions yet basic skills like bracing, sculling and rolling are included. Even the most basic things that are left out are assumed by their absence and that keeps the book from being patronising in an overly wordy `beginners guide' type way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential kayaking book
This is a fabulous book on sea kayaking.I loved reading it because of the very useful information and mix of serious and humorous writing styles.A must read - and you'll want to read it several times to soak up all the great information.Highly recommended for any kayaker. His exploits are impressive and inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of the Sport
There are a number of good books on kayak technique, but Dowd's is thebible of the sport, and with good reason. He's been kayaking for overthirty years, and he's done some of the most difficult voyages in kayakinghistory. He's specific in his recommendations, but open minded, too. Hefavors feathered paddles, but he understands the advantage of unfeatehredpaddles, and allows how they may be superior in many conditions.Read more

Editorial Review

As its title suggests, this useful guide offers about as exhaustive a course in river running as you can expect to get on dry land.Author Jeff Bennett outlines a simple approach that will take you from the showroom of your local paddling outfitter to the rapids of your favorite river. You'll learn about rafting history, equipment, safety, and rescue, and explore the dynamic forces at play in the rivers themselves. From underwater currents, surface hydraulics, and rapids classifications to water and wave patterns known as haystacks and pillows, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars exceptional information
Bennet's book is detailed, readable and contains all the information that is needed to start rafting, though the information on the types of boats available is a bit dated. His chapters on the river bed morphology and the effects on the moving water are understandable and excellent and far makes up for the older information on this years raft models.5-0 out of 5 stars if you're thinking of rafting it's a must!
Jeff Bennett has been doing rivers in North and Central America as aguide, whitewater instructor, international racer and professionalphotographer since the early 1970's.He has co-authored several otherbooks, including Class Five Chronicles. The Complete Whitewater Rafter isthe culmination of his river experiences and the progeny of his previousbook Rafting!.Although sole author, he envisions The Complete WhitewaterRafteras the culmination of a river-running evolution that has beenongoing for the last half century. He has borrowed tips and techniquesfrom contemporary instructors and classic technique textbooks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best on the Market
This is the best general kayaking book on the market today (2001). Covers the range of the activity. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential, though perhaps not complete
I don't know if I'd agree with the subtitle; Seidman's guide is by nomeans complete (for that, see Dowd's "Sea Kayaking") but itcertainly does cover the essentials of the sport, and as others have noted,it is certainly sufficient to introduce a newcomer to all the essentialtechniques needed to get started. While no book is a replcement for a goodteacher, Seidman gives you enough to get out and teach yourself basicstrokes, braces and perhaps even rolls- though that's something best seendemonstrated first.5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written and informative
I got into sea kayaking after reading this book and it is all the author said and more. I've lent this book to a number of friends who are now also "hooked".This is an easy to read book, one that evokes thepossibilities of kayaking along with information necessary to develop theconfidence to make them happen. I highly recommend it to anyone consideringthis great sport. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Kayak Navigation
The complete guide to finding your way and getting there safely.Burch, the director of the Starpath School of Navigation in Seattle, Washington, covers every topic that I can imagine is relevant to sea kayaking, including reading and using navigational charts, dead reckoning andpiloting, determining paddling speed, estimating distance from a landmark, maintaining a heading while paddling in a crossing current, and tidaleffects relevant to navigation. Each example is accompanied by cleardiagrams which help illustrate sometimes difficult points. This book iswritten specifically with the kayaker in mind; it's not an adapted versionof a small-craft navigation manual.Burch strove for completeness whenwriting this seminal manual, but also kept the layperson in mind bymaintaining his clear style throughout the text. His years of teachingexperience and immense navigational knowledge are obvious from readingFundamentals. The book will take more than one read to absorb all importantinformation and all the techniques the author decribes, but you will neverneed another source. This is the kayak navigation book to buy if you planon doing any sort of ocean kayaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Kayaking Book - of benefit to hardshell users too
An outstanding primer on the folding kayak from soup to nuts - a wonderful book. The author is unreserved in his love of and praise for the folding kayak. He thinks they are better and tells your why.But there is a wealth of information here too for the hardshell kayaker.
5-0 out of 5 stars Still the bible
Back in 1997 I wrote the first Amazon review of what was then the only book devoted entirely to folding kayaks.(You might want to scroll down and read it; everything I wrote still applies). With no competition you'd think Ralph would be content to rest on his laurels, but instead he's put a lot of effort into an extensive rewrite of the original book. All the new boats that have appeared on the market since the first edition have been included, and plenty of solid information from Ralph's invaluable Folding Kayak Newsletter has been integrated into the new edition.5-0 out of 5 stars You've Got to Know When to Fold 'Em

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent......or should I say, necessary guide for beginners.
This book was actually my first ever Amazon.com purchase almost 10 ago. It is a must have for anyone new to the sport of kayaking and just getting down the art of the bombproof roll, something essential for Class 4 whitewater or greater. This is a book with excellent illustrations and in-depth explanations, which allow one to visualize how a specific roll is done, even if there is nobody there showing you first-hand.This book has it all: the regular Eskimo roll, the two-handed roll, the one-handed roll, and even the no hands roll. And even non-roll techiques are presented here, such as wave surfing. Practically whatever you want to learn, it is in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars bombproof book
this book taught me to roll, on my own, no instructor. derek hutchinson's book is a classic but dutkey's is an instruction manual. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ditto
I bought this book around the time it first came out about nine years ago or so.Not only is it useful for learning the kayak roll, the author also covers "old school" playboating maneuvers such as wave surfing, side-surfing in holes, 360's, enders, and pirouttes. The illustrations are diagramatic and especially helpful.Rolling techniques included are the "C-to-C" or snap roll, the sweep roll, back deck rolls, hands rolls as well as rolling stategies and exercises.Definitely one of the most helpful kayaking technique books I have read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book places a strong emphasis on technical perfection.Which is rarely found in todays rodeo-centric paddling community.5-0 out of 5 stars If whitewater kayaking is your interest, this is the book
Eric Jackson has put together the most concise and well thought-out book in modern kayak technique to have come out in years. An experienced class V+ kayaker myself, I found improvements I could apply to my everypaddlestroke from this book. Even expert boaters will benefit on key pointsregarding modern school techniques from catching eddies andsnappingsprayskirts to finding the optimal pressurization for floatbags. A mustread for all serious paddlers.

Editorial Review

"It's well known that Mother River doesn't like a smart aleck," says Patricia McCairen. Accordingly, she plies her oars with reverence and skill on a sometimes hair-raising solo rafting trip along the Colorado River that winds though the stupendous stone valleys of the American Grand Canyon. Like the waters of the Colorado, which change from long, still stretches to boiling white water that barely clothes sharp rocks and hides holes that can suck down a raft, McCairen's moods--and even her name--change as the miles unwind. One moment, she's the cocky, athletic river guide Babe; the next, she's an earthier, more spiritual woman who answers to the name of Patch. Hours later, she seems more vulnerable, less convinced of her strength and joy in the solitude she so zealously courts. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to savor
This is a wonderful read. It gracefully mixes adventure with honest self-revelation as it explores the potentials and pains of a woman at midlife. Especially meaningful to me were McCairen's meditations on solitude versus loneliness and her wrestling with fear of intimacy. Going alone into the wilderness is a radical act for a woman, and McCairen engages it with consciousness and skill. I was sorry when the book ended, I had grown to so look forward to curling up with it at the end of the day. I would welcome a sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Secretaryville to the Grand Canyon
I'm not a rafter, and have no particular interest in rafting, but this book somehow captured my interest and I read it in a couple of hours. Patricia has a poetic way of writing about nature and her adventures rafting over the Colorado, and she takes the reader along for the ride. I admire her greatly for her courageous decision to go it alone (at least most of the time) on a very hazardous journey. I hope she continues to write (and avoid that dreaded Secretaryville).

4-0 out of 5 stars I wouldn't do it, but someone has to.
Experienced river-runner Patricia McCairen was suddenly faced with a choice when she found herself without companions for a trip through Grand Canyon. She could give up her permit and hope to get another at some point or she could go it alone. Certain she would be saved from her bravado she called the National Park Service to get special permission for a solo trip and was both surprised and terrified when permisssion was granted.Read more

This book really is a gift. Once you read former Poet Laureate Robert Hass's beautiful introduction, you won't want to stop -- and you won't be disappointed. We're talking range here -- from Isabel Allende's Amazon toLorian Hemingway's Arkansas to William Least Heat-Moon's Mississippi ...and from icy mountain torrents like the En in Switzerland to cultural mainstreets like the Seine in France and the Nile in Egypt and the Ganges inIndia, to rivers choked by industry and neglect like the Columbia in theU.S. -- honestly, you'll laugh, you'll cry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for the River Time
If all of the world's rivers formed a giant continuous watershed (which in a sense they do), I'd put-in at the top and proceed to ride, glide and meander my way down the arteries of our earth. As I entered into eachunique river system - Congo, Amazon, Seine, Futaleufu, Siuslaw,Mississippi, Narmada - the human and natural histories of each river wouldbe revealed to me, uncovered, discovered like the layers of time and tideof the Grand Canyon. At the take-out I'd be changed. I'd better understandJohn Calderazzo's observation that a river can "turn into a state ofmind, a kind of feeling." That is the gift of rivers. Of course, there is no such thing as a put-in at the top of the world's watershed, butjust as good is Pamela Michael's book, "The Gift of Rivers." Turnthe page, enter into river time, hear the stories, and fall in love withour watery ancestors, the world's rivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the IK novice
With my canoeing experiences some 20 years ago, I wasn't sure if I wouldremember how to 'read the water', and was very apprehensive about tryingout an inflatable kayak. I purchased this book and found it a very goodguide for the IK novice. It has a good section on reading the river withmany line drawings of river morphology. The chapter on paddle strokes isvery clear, with actual photographs demonstrating them. It helped me to seethe strokes being used with the IK. The larger beam of the tubes makes forsome differences in technique. The book mainly covers whitewater inflatablekayaking, but the basic strokes can be used in all IK scenarios. Hey - Ijust ran a Class III river, sucessfully, and found myself using many of thetechniques I had read about. 'Working' the IK is different from canoes orhardshell kayaks, and this book shows the reader how to handle this type ofboat, accordingly. Most kayaking books seem to cover only thehardshells-this book is for us "duckies"!!! It is easier for meto relate to a photo of a 'yaker' in an IK leaning than to a hardshellrolling. I don't plan on rolling - intentionally, that is - and theself-rescue/safety section tells me how to recover if I do. I recommend itas a general guide for the IK novice, although there are further chapterson more advanced techniques for the veterans. It's easy, enjoyable readingand worth having as a primer or refresher. Fellow duckies - read the bookand hit the water! Wa-Hoo !!!

2-0 out of 5 stars This book has nothing about sea kayaking, lakes or riffles.
I purchased this book based on the promise of its title, a promise not kept. The book is almost wholly about white-water kayaking, ignoring my main interest, lakes, ocean, lagoons, and simple rivers without complicated white-water rapids. The book title includes the word "complete" and the book is far from that.It also limits itself mostly to one-man kayaks, little helpful about how to select a kayak to buy. -Jon Claerbout ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional resource for paddlers
I am an avid sea kayaker and got this book after I injured my neck to help develop a rehabilitation program designed to gradually get me back to paddling long distances. Ideally, this book should be used to prevent injuries, especially those caused by overexertion.FIT TO PADDLE provides a sports specific conditioning program which will keep all types of paddlers in top paddling form. The book also includes sample home workout programs and a chart of the muscular system.
