I have previously purchased a Ross Berstein book ("Gopher Hockey by the Hockey Gopher") and found that to be an entertaining read. Not so with this offering

5-0 out of 5 stars BOOK DESCRIPTION FROM THE AUTHOR, ROSS BERNSTEIN
I had actually been working with Herb Brooks for nearly a year at the time of his untimely death this past Fall on writing a series of motivational/self-help books. You see, Herbie had recently turned down an offer to come back to the Big Apple and coach the New York Rangers again, opting instead to spend more time with his family and doing more motivational speaking - which is what the books were for.So, when I head the horrible news that August 11th, I decided right then and there to turn our project into a memorial. The result is the new book, "Remembering Herbie," a tribute to my friend and mentor.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to carve:A ski classic to take you to the expert level.
I read this book on the advice of a fellow ski journeyman (now renowned Aspen Mountain Ski Instructor, Paul Wade) in the mid 70's as an instructor at Sugarbush, Vt. I've been skiing all my life and this book almost single handedly - along with Paul's advice - changed my skiing forever delivering me to the 'next level' ... the magic "it" where the "there" is. Witherall's clear and concise writing took me from an excellent skier [albeit sliding, sometimes carved turns] to an expert, consistently on the ski's edge with beautiful ripped and carved turns. Even with shorter, phatter skiis of 2004, Witherall's writing is still current and uniquely relevant, if not even more so because skiis have gotten so much better as described by Witherall [maybe even predicted? where yesterday's term "sidecut" means the same as today's "parabolic"] ...If you understand how skiis work, and Witherall documents this, you'll understand even more how phat, tapered waist, i.e parabolic, skiis will help you, partner with you, to carve perfect turns. I hear this book has been controversial, that not everyone agree's with Witherall [in Western US ski teaching camps with softer snow conditions, there's more emphasis on equal weighting and "sliding" your skis], but until otherwise advised, this book has no equal for learning how skiis work and how to carve and rip through harder packed, iced, Eastern US ski conditions. It will take you to a rad, bad and oh so fine expert level wherever you ski, however freestyle you go.

An exceptionally well-written encyclopedic account that not only becomes the standard in its field, but sets the standard for future historians of any sporting endeavor. Fry's superb book covers the explosive growth of both recreational and competitive skiing with the sharp eye of the veteran insider for telling detail, ranging from the wholesome outdoors to the hedonistic indoors of apres ski. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unlike the Make Beliefs, this is championship calibre
You would think there would be nothing more to write about after the slew of books the Pal Hal era spewed out. Well, you'll be surprised as Damien Cox (one of the few T,O,-based writers who "gets it" and is not madly in love with the Laffs) with help from the Stellickian one put out possibly the finest analysis of the failure of the post-expansion Leafs.4-0 out of 5 stars Great Look At The End Of An Era In Hockey
The Toronto Maple Leafs are a long, storied member of the NHL as one of the "original six" franchises, but their history in recent decades shows a futility that is starting to close in on the one known by Ranger fans like me for many years until 1994 (only Chicago has gone longer without a Cup). The last Toronto Cup came in 1967, which not completely coincidentally was the last year of the "Original Six" era of the NHL before the onslaught of expansion, and it is about this team that this book is chiefly concerned with.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you love Alta, buy this book.
This book will appeal to people that know and love Alta, Utah or are interested in the history of skiing in the Western US.It primarily chronicles the life of Alf Engen, and therefore, chronicles the history ofAlta and and an important part of skiing in the west.Engen was theinventor of modern powder skiing and richly deserves the honor of thisbook.

3-0 out of 5 stars Neat pictures, but too much ski jumping.
Neat pictures, but kind of a muddled presentation. This is not really a general history of skiing, but a biography of Alf Engen who was a local hero in Salt Lake City, Utah and ran the Ski School at Alta for years andyears. There's too much about ski jumping and not enough about other kindsof skiing. The author, Alf's son Alan, seems like a spokesman for the skiindustry more than a historian. ... Read more

I'm really glad I picked up this book. First off, it is a book that you can easily read in a single sitting. The family photos just add to the book.4-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT SKATER,WOMAN AND MOTHER
Ekaterina is a very strong woman.5-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Book full of warmth and love
This is a delightful book that showcases a mother's obvious love for her daughter and for her own mother and grandmother. In this book Katia reveals as much or more about herself than she did in her previous book (also a great book) and tells lots of cute and funny antecdotes about her family. As much as I love My Sergei, I think I actually like this one better. But, you should know, it is written for an older children's reading level and is very different from My Sergei in style.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Hockey book
If you enjoy Ice Hockey, especially from a historical perspective, this is the book to read.Fans of Don Cherry will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars He shoots and scores!
George Plimpton once again dons a uniform and plays a game. This time he tackles hockey while training with the Boston Bruins.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE MAN BETWEEN THE PIPES SCORES
THIS IS ONE OF PLIMPTON'S BEST. I REALLY ENJOYED HIS STORY PLAYING GOAL FOR THE BRUINS. HIS CONVERSATIONS WITH VARIOUS PLAYERS AND COACHES ARE EXCELLENT. HIS DESCRIPTIONS OF THE EVENTS MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE RIGHT THERE ON THE ICE WITH HIM. PLIMPTON DOESN'T WASTE TOO MUCH TIME DESCRIBING HIS SURROUNDINGS LIKE HE DOES IN OTHER BOOKS. HE GOES STRAIGHT TO THE POINT. SOME HIGHLIGHTS ARE DESCRIBING HOW HE PUTS HIS UNIFORM ON IN A DETAILED ORDER, OLD STORIES ABOUT EDDIE SHORE, AND HIS ACTUAL TIME ON THE ICE PLAYING GOAL DURING A COUPLE OF EXHIBITION GAMES MAKE THIS A GREAT READ. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary book
Rarely have I read and re-read a book with as much interest as this one. The pictures in the book was thought lost until re-discovered in a loft in Oslo in 1986. It provides an unusual insight into early polar explorationfrom both a pictoral and literary perspective

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Record of Exploration History
As opposed to all the badly written adventure fiction books of today, thisis an excellent photographic record of Amundsen's adventures. It's atribute to the man who was among the first to winter in the Antarctic, wasthe first to reach the South Pole, was the first to fly over the arcticocean and the North Pole, and was killed while attempting to rescue anotherexpedition that had crashed in the Arctic.A photographic tribute to atruely great man. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Concept is correct
The concept is correct anyway. These people were led to their demise by three factors:the church, commercialization (HBC), and the Canadian government.Mowat claims he spent two years living among these people. This is doubted by some.I've traveled in some of the areas that this book takes place. Not everyone has great things to say about this author. One person I talked to called him a historical novelist. He has other nicknames.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another take...
I guess I'm wierd, but what I loved about this book was the backstories on the six skaters, their history, families, coaches, etc. Fascinating stuff. What I got from this was a whole new level of respect and admiration for the pairs skaters coming from Russia and China.I'm also happy to see that the two Chinese skaters featured in this book will be skating in Torino 2006.I'll be watching them with great interest - at least as much as NBC allows me to see of them - and thinking about little six-year old Shen Xue and her bloody socks. There's not much new ground broken on the scandal that rocked the Salt Lake City Olympics, but for anyone interested in knowing more about the skaters involved, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
This book has interesting information on the childhoods, tribulations, and triumphs of Jamie Sale, David Pelletier, Shen Xue, Zhao Hongbo, and Elena Berezhnaya. The one person it is lacking information on is Anton Sikharulidze. It goes through their elite careers and touches on competitions leading up to the games. The play-by-play account of the Olympics brings you back to the day you watched the pair's final. If you are looking for information on the scandal other than what was printed in newspapers, don't bother reading this book. Overall, it gives information that is hard to find elsewhere on the six skater's lives before and after the Olympics. I highly reccomend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much backstory
The book was not my cup of tea. I don't remember the events enough to care about any of the people covered in this book. The part I was most interested in was the scandal with the judging, not with the lovingly written back stories of each of the skaters. By the time the book got to the bit I was interested in I was bored and put the book aside. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
What is wrong with these kid reviewers?I admit, I've never been really fond of Gary Paulsen's books, but i was pleasantly surprised.Seriously, every kid reviewer who hated this book should go out and get a life!Very well written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wilderness Adventures
Gary Paulsen. "Paulsen is the best man-against-nature adventures writing today" according to Publisher Weekly. He lives with his wife Ruth in Minnesota. In "Wood Song" Gary talks about his like in the woods with his dogs. The book is about how unforgiving the wild can be and how he had to learn to deal with death in a hole new way. In just the first few chapters he talks about how on one of his first runs with a sled team he encounters a pack of wolfs chasing a deer. Also he learns that he knows very little about running a dog sled team in the begging, but once he starts running with the team more and more he starts to understand them and why they like to run. The book talks about how close Gary gets to his first led dog Storm. The book then talks about when he ran the Iditarod in Alaska. How he had to survive against the elements with only his dogs as company. In the book Gary talks about where he has been and what he has done.
4-0 out of 5 stars This is VERY informational
I really enjoyed this book because it talks alot about his life. The book is a little gorey in the first few chapters but it really talks about Gary Paulsen's life. Some quotes that I thought that were meaningful were the parts where he talked about The Doe, I thought that part was interesting to me becuase it talked about life or death which was always a mystery to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Game of Our Soul
I first read this book when I was 11 years old and once again 12 years later. Both times it made me realize that hockey in Canada is a right of passage that is one of the few threads holding our nation together. It also helped me to understand that for those of us who love this fast graceful and violent game happiness is only a frozen pond away. The book follows the trials and tribulations of the 1980 pre champion Edmonton Oilers. The team is a group of young unproven players with a few cagey veterans mixed in for guidance. Under the helmanship of Glen Sather the team rises above their lackluster regular season performance. Gzowski travels with the team and becomes a trusted companion which allows him a rare look at the inner workings and social power structure of a professional sports team. Led by the pasty faced 18 year old Wayne Gretzky the Oilers eventually gell into a close knit team which will eventually dominate in the future but must first learn some valueable lessons. I found myself caring for the players and I stopped viewing them as helmeted thugs who compete more for money then for their team. The book enabled me to realize that a successful team can only succeed if it has a good supporting cast of grunts. It's a refreshing read in this day and age of spiralling salaries and inflated egos. Gzowski also includes insights from his childhood growing up in rural Ontario which are very effective. A great read. ... Read more
