4-0 out of 5 stars Several trips in one book
Roff Smith writes in this book about more than one trip to Antarctica, and in each trip he moves around from base to base to explore the place. For this reason, the book feels a bit disjointed, but it is a great portrait of the place and the people who live and work there today and the support systems that help them from the outside.Smith is often funny, as well as awestruck. That seems to be the effect the place has on people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I've been looking for a book on Antarctica as I will soon be going there in a research support capacity. I was anxious to get an account of "what it is really like" being down there.Smith's accounts of dealing with the US program were especially interesting to me.His writing is humerous, insightful and thoroughly enjoyable to read. After reading this book, I think I have a decent sense of what to expect (his description of the pre-trip paperwork has already proven to be dead-on).
4-0 out of 5 stars Needs Pictures!
I've been fascinated with Antarctica since hearing Vaughan Williams' Sympony No. 7 "Antarctica."This is the first book about the area that I've read. I found it fascinating right from page one. The author wastes no time getting to the ship and the voyage, and does a tremendous job describing the landscape.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing memoir
I can count on one hand the number of books that have truly and wholly transported me to another time and place. The Last Gentleman Adventurer easily joins the work of Jack London and Herman Melville in this regard, with the happy and astonishing distinction of being a true account rather than fiction. The author, Edward Maurice writes with a rare kind of insight, humane and honest. His adventures are at once breathtaking and sobering. My only regret is that this was his only book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dawn of His Life but the Twilight of an Era
Edward Beauclerk Maurice, in his waning years, looked back on his first job, a job so distant in time and space that it might as well have been hundreds of years ago:In the 1930s, Maurice was recruited as a teenager to run one of the last fur-trading outposts in Arctic Canada operated by the Hudson Bay Company.Dropped off in a tiny Inuit village with a year's worth of trading supplies, he is meant by the Company to be both purveyor and parent to the local people.Of course, as an unexperienced teenager he had no skills for either role, and it is only through the benevolence of the villagers that he is able to cope.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coming of Age in the Arctic
"The Last Gentleman Adventurer" is a delightful, even beautiful account by Edward Maurice of his time as a young clerk for the Hudson's Bay Company in the Canadian Arctic of the 1930's.Maurice was working literally at the intersection of the Inuit and European worlds. We are most fortunate as readers that the author was unjaded, exceptionally observant, and open to the possibilities of life in that time and place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Honest
I read this book when we were in the process of finding a boat to cruise on with our 2 toddlers. I found this book to be very enlightening on the crusing lifestyle. I found it humerously written in parts when the Martins made a plan for every obstacle they faced. I laughed, I cried and I laughed and cried at the same time. I've read a lot of books catered to women out cruising and as a woman and mother I found this book to be the most interesting as it really delved into family life on board. It is the only cruising book my husband wanted to hear about - in fact I'd read to him at night and we enjoyed it together. Jaja has a positive attitude that is infectious. You find yourself almost connected to the Martin family. Other books leave you feeling depressed your not out there yet but this book leaves you feeling inspired. A very happy read and I've recommended it to a lot of people. My only regret is I loaned it to my father-in-law and, now that I'm out cruising, I'd love to read it again but I can't get it back from him!
4-0 out of 5 stars A big dose of adventure with afew drops of sanctimony.
We all love adventure books:the power and challenge of wild, the beauty of nature, the personal tests of hardship, and the strength of the human spirit. All of this and more can be found in the Marin's saga.It makes for great reading. But pervading all of this adventure and beauty is a philosophy. For some, it appears, this philosophy is enlightening, uplifting and "enriching", speaking to our desires to be free from the pathos of our modern world. For me, this philosophy of rejection by the Martins comes across a little heavy-handed, with inverted narcissism (hey, look at us, look how simple and humbly we can live), a touch of hypocrisy (ooh, let's keep our children out those American schools in North Carolina, but wow, wouldn't it be culturally uplifting to enroll them in an Icelandic and a Norwegian school), and an air of superiority.OK, OK, I'm being overly critical. We all at times seek a simpler life and I too envy the Martin's freedom, spirit and sense of adventure and this really is an enjoyable book. But hey, let's not take ourselves too seriously here.I give Into the Light 4 stars: 4 or 5 for the great adventure, and 2 or 3 for the overdose of "Martinism".

2-0 out of 5 stars Sailor"s review of this book
Being a sailor myself I bought this book with great expectation of entertainment in reading about an adventurous sailing journey.I was very disappointed. There was very little data given about the boat, its gear, and sailing tactics. The book was about what they did when they got there. The author would go on and on about people and places in Iceland and Scandanavia that you could not pronounce; yet, I still don't know what brand of Diesel engine the vessel had, its displacement or horse power.Sail plan, displacement, keel type, etc., are still a mystery. No pictures or data charts.Did a vessel really exist?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incomparable -- an easy resource book
This is the classic comic book version of a telemark skiing text book:brief, clear narrative accompanying excellent cartoon drawings. The book shows both old style (knee down) and new style (no deep dips, feet never widely separated front to back) telemark techniques without really distinguishing between the two but, if you follow the exercises and advice, your skiing will improve. An enjoyable read, an attractive style and price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Shallow facts
You really need Parker's book to understand the tips of this juvenile book. But once you've read Parker's book you immediately realise that this book is just collection of tips from Parker drafted in comics. Without explanations of course. I don'tdo anything unless I believe the tip is sound and this book does not convince me. Yeah, it's funny for a while but it does not supply the enthusiast the facts really needed to improve in free heels stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful pocket book to refer to while skiing.
I've skied with this book for one season now and found that the tips are relevant and enjoyable. Both the beginner and expert can learn from this book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I do believe
Although I wasn't born yet to witness the Miracle on Ice, this book almost makes up for it. Truly inspirational, especially the stories of Eruzione and Wells. A must read if you love to root for underdogs or if you are interested in what happened to the boys after Lake Placid.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story From One of Nation's Best Sportswriters
Wayne Coffey is a wonderful sportswriter for the NY Daily News, so seeing his name on this book gave me every reason to believe I would like it.I was right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, honest narrative about life experiences
I was truly sad to finish this book.Jill is very honest about her adventures and about the frustrating and life changing times she has had in the wilderness.Even if the reader is not an outdoorsperson, he or she will enjoy the vivid descriptions of the arctic communities, the relationship between Jill and husband Doug, the struggles Jill faces in life including her mother's battle with cancer and much more.Thank you Jill for writing such a beautiful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Adventurous, Real
I just finished reading this book.I stopped part way through, because it was so good, I didn't want to finish it yet. Now, I'm going to name it as the book of the month when I host my book club next. This book is so fresh, so in-your-marrow real, so insightful, adventurous, and breathtakingly descriptive, it defies easy categorization.Ms. Fredston is a fantastic writer, and after hearing her words for the last 286 pages in my head, I sincerely would consider it a tremendous privilege and honor to meet her in person. She has sent me on a search for the woman in me who is so wise, so calm in the face of crisis, so adaptable, so loving, and so passionate about life and living it.I know I have emerged from this reading with a sincere desire to make my life what it is I desire, instead of waiting for "someday".I am thrilled to have her voice added to the voices of other women, so few, who lead us boldly into our dreams, fears, and wildest adventures. You must read this book, and if you have a daughter in high school or college, give her one as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great read
When a non-fiction book reads like a fiction book, I know I'm in for a great treat. That is, I find myself looking for little breaks during the day when I natch a page or two to read this book, I know that I have a winner. This is also written by a women who has learned a little bit about life in her winter job as a avalanche expert in Alaska, and she brings this understanding to her passion of rowing in the polar regions. It is Jill's descriptions that are a delight to the mind because they are so well written.Although, I have never seen as ice berg or an ice field, I feel that I have some greater appreciation of the beauty and harm (yes, harm) that they are capable of doing in a split second.I remember the words of some great sage, that said that getting there is what travel is all about, versus vacation when you take a jet and lay in a lounger by the pool. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Picture Book
This is a neat coffee table book for hockey fans. Because it's compiled under the supervision of the NHL, it isn't going to reveal anything that Gary Bettman doesn't want you to know. I did find some interesting content in it, though. It's loaded with some great photos and short essays on the daily doings of the NHL as they happened on March 23, 1996. What I mainly liked about it was that it didn't just stick with a few teams, but almost all of them appear in one part, or another. It also talks about travel, workouts, pre-game prep (including what equipment crew are doing when ESPN and Fox Sports Net aren't around), ice rink conversion, press, fans, games, coaches, the dressing room, hotels, broadcasters, Gretzky, Keenan, St. Michael's, kids, arena crews, and trainers. It doesn't give the whole picture on everything, but it's an adequate scratch at the surface.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is this book out there?
I have been trying to find this book for sale for about a year without any luck.Maybe this note will bring this book to my possession.I am just your average Joe looking for a book that has my picture in it next to theStanley Cup.I would love to purchase this book if anybody has it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent But.........

I looked under the Tampa Bay Lightning and their was mypicture with my name by it.I really made me mad.No one told me theywere going to put my picture in a book or my name.I don't even have abook for myself.I wish they still made them so I could have one.I feelthey should have sent me a book or at least told me I was on the cover andmy name was inside the book.Don't you think. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A modern sports autobiography
Chris Klug and Steve Jackson's account of the Olympian's triumphant life is an excellent example of the modern sports autobiography: Truly spoken, well-written, and a glimpse inside a sport not too many readers probably know too much about. But it's Klug's life -- so far -- that intrigues. Like Lance Armstrong, Klug has faced adversity outside of sports and conquered it, making his athletic achievement so much more important and interesting. Top-notch work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Book Amazing
This is simply an amazing story. From beginning to end, it instills a sense of wanting to go out and live life to the fullest. It has everything a great book should. This book will make you laugh, cry, and appreciate life.A great inspirational story, everyone should have this in his or her collection. This book appeals not only to skiers and snowboarders but also across generations.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition is Way Better
I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventure in the Arctic
If you like an exciting adventure that you don't want to end and if you enjoy the style of writing that makes you feel you're actually there experiencing what the writer is going through you'll enjoy this book. To gain an understanding of some of the native peoples of the frozen Arctic wilderness and this unique place on earth read this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Unbridled narcissism in an arctic setting. ?Spiritual?
I could not agree more with every word of Isha Beharim's review. My first impression at the beginning of the book was of the author's extreme self absorbtion, and the impression never left me, and the self absorbtion never left the author either, despite whatever "spiritual" experience he may have had. The book, by the way, never comes within a country mile of anything even remotely spiritual, and I think perhaps the word was used in the sub-title only to improve sales, although, who knows, maybe sadly this sort of stuff passes for spirituality for this guy.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's more like a 10-star book
because it has all the things great books are supposed to have. It's exciting, honest, moving, educational, thoughtful, humorous, philosophical. You'll be different after you read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE hockey book!!!
I've owned this book for over 20 years, and I still pick it up from time to time to read it . .it is honestly that interesting and compelling. In no way would I consider myself as being a New York Ranger fan whatsoever. That being said, when I had finished reading this book, I found myself at times actually rooting for the Rangers in the playoffs based on the writing skill of "Ratso" Sloman. It is that good.If you can only read one hockey book in your lifetime, read this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thin Ice is a must read !
It's absolutely asinine that this book was not among "The Top 100 Sports Books Of All Time" compiled by the staff of Sports Illustrated Magazine. It is a must read, you do not need to be a hockey or sports fan to enjoy this read, it is the "Ball Four" of hockey books. Don't miss it, if you can find it !

5-0 out of 5 stars "Ratso" and the Manhatten Rangers !
Although I'm not a NY Ranger's fan by any stretch of the imagination, this book is a long forgotten classic and a must read for every hockey fan. "Ratso", (Larry Sloman) did a great job in profiling the NY Ranger players on and off the ice and he is able to insinuate, instances of sexcapades and drug use among the players and still protect their privacy, he takes us behind the scenes of the Manhatten party life with celebrities, models and hockey players. I was able to find this book in an old inner city library sometime in the late 70's, early 80's. The chance of you finding it now are slim and nil, but if you do get a hold of it, I'm sure you'll be glad you did. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good hockey book
For a fan of Hockey, Dryden's book provides a fascinating inside look at the life of a prefessional NHL team even though the 70's were a much different era in Hockey and sports in general. Detailing not just game highlights and statistics but really concentrating on the day to day travel and practice grind, the book really get's inside the dynamics of a great team.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very special book...
The combination of a person who is both highly educated and a 6 time Stanley Cup Winner can only produce an extraordinary book that goes beyond other sports biographies. Here we deal with a person who is consciously making an end to a very successful career and upon doing so reflects on his personal past, but also the experience of being part of a team and playing hockey in a legendary hockey town, that is unique in its own political and linguistic division. He then proceeds to review the history of the game, explaining the difference between European style hockey and Canadian and ultimately in the new edition comparing his perspective at the time to the current state of the international and expanded NHL. Particularly with regard to the recent lockout this new epilogue is extremely interesting. This is a really unique book, but what makes it most attractive is that any hockey player will recognize the description of locker room and team behavior, no matter what level you play at. Canadiens fans will love the stories about his legendary team mates and goalies will recognize his views on being a goalie. This is a very special book...

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique view of an exceptional hockey team
The game by Ken Dryden provides a unique view of the Montreal Canadiens during their 1970's reign as the premiere ice hockey team of the NHL and arguably of the world. Dryden's perspective of the team as a whole, the individual players and himself are a fascinating analysis of what made the team "gel" in both good and bad times. In particular, Dryden's critical self-appraisal of his career as it came to a conclusion is a revealing testimonial to his strength of character and his love for the game. A highly cerebral and entertaining readingexperience. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but quick.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was full of interesting stories, though short, of old time hockey. I wish there would have been more about the more recent players, but learning about the older players, of which it's hard to find out a lot, was both fun and informative.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not enough
Although there are some great stories in here, it left me wanting more. There should have been much more from the Stanley Cup winning and fun-loving teams of the early '70's.5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME
If you bleed black and gold you'll love this book its a must !!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A midlife adventure, told with wit, spirit, and respect for the loyalty of man's (and woman's!) best friend
Running With Champions: A Midlife Journey On The Open Trail is the memoir of an ordinary Alaskan fisherwoman whose journey to see the finish of the 1,049-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race transformed her life forever. Observing the musher's devotion to their dogs and the strenuous demands for competing in an epic race, she began volunteering at checkpoints, became an apprentice to Iditarod champion Jeff King, and at last dared to mush her own dog team. A midlife adventure, told with wit, spirit, and respect for the loyalty of man's (and woman's!) best friend.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly entrancing
Wow, what an adventure! To take on the 1000 mile Iditarod across half of Alaska. Lisa Frederic has written the completely enjoyable, totally honest and surprisingly exciting story of how she entered the world of long-distance dogsledding. Her courage, endurance, her terrors, successes, accidents and setbacks, the camaraderie she found with other sledders, her love of Alaska and her incredible love of the dogs themselves comes through beautifully in this well-written book. I read it cover to cover in three nights, as I couldn't wait to read what was going to come next. Very inspiring, lots of fun & drama, and quite amusing. Highly recommended. ... Read more
