5-0 out of 5 stars Aresh Look At Developing New Hockey Players
If you've wondered what's happened to Stanley Cup winner Bruce Driver since he wrapped up his illustrious 15-year career playing hockey with the New Jersey Devils, you'll find the answer in the new book, "The Baffled Parent's Guide to Coaching Youth Hockey".Admirably, Driver has been teaching young, would-be hockey stars the secrets of the game.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book that touches on every aspect
Overall, this is a great book that touches on all aspects of hockey. I am a high school hockey coach and this book has some really nice drills and information in it. We are using a couple already in practice that work great. One thing that I was hoping for (4 stars instead of 5)was a little more intense drills or more detailed info for the higher levels of hockey. Also, it only has 3 goalie drills which was a little disturbing. As a goalie coach as well as an assistant, I find that upsetting since the position is so important, but yet it's the most overlooked. However if you are a parent or coach looking for a book that touches on every aspect of hockey as well as drills this is definitely the one. I do find the parts on dealing with parents and setting up practice plans also helpful. It was well written and has a lot of great info from an NHL player and Stanley Cup winner. It is one of the best books that puts it all together for you to learn the sport of hockey. I would suggest picking up the book: Complete hockey instruction by Dave Chambers with this book and as far as goaltending is concerned, go to www.hockeygoaltender.com. That has some of the best info concerning that position. With these 3 items you would have a pretty good arsenal on coaching and understanding the sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed Clarity, Detail & Readability!
I was floored by thoroughness of expertise and professionalism in this book, which goes hand-in-hand with the sheer passion for the game and wisdom in teaching children that comes through on every page.No detail of technique, sportsmanship or strategy is left out here, and the book is as useful a guide for would-be coaches inexperienced in the ways of the game as it is for veteran coaches looking broaden their knowledge base.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trail recommendations for Colorado X-C skiers and snowshoers
Clear and attractive book, but scary, because some of the advice is not suitable for inexperienced or beginner snwshoers. Skiers can consider tackling 10 to 20 mile trails in winter and at high altitudes, but that'stoo much for anyone new to winter in the high country--especiallymisleading because the author rates some of these as novice tointermediate. ... Jon Waterman is a writer who belongs between the hardcovers. His explorations and introspection make for compelling reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Articulate Adventurer
Who was it who said, "less is more"? That's one truth that stands out in Jonathan Waterman's "Artic Crossing" - a epical solo trip of the Northwest Passage done without fanfare, without oodles of sponsorship dough. I liked the author's cool, understated writing style, the wry observations about his sufferings and about the Inuits. No hyperbole, none of self-inflation that is so common in adventure writing, this book is truly believable. A wonderful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading - excellent value
The books is written in a easy to follow style,no-nonsense,and contains both academical info about avalanches and practical , hot tips. A lot of valuable information is packed up in this book. The book is also copiously illustrated with both photos and graphical drawings to reinforce the knowledge contained in the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain.
The Best Avalanche book I have ever read. I would recommend to pros and novices alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of my avalanche books
I own 6 of the most popular books on avalanche safety; this is by far the best. The core information needed to assess avalanche risk is given in some detail but the explanations are presented in "everyday" terms and are quite easy to understand. None-the-less,Tremper never talks down to his readers and the full level of complexity inherent in the subject matter is maintained. This is simply a very well written book by an author who appearantly is able to write well naturally. He would probably do very well writing about any subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a bible of free heel skiing
Great book that all free heel skiers should read. Eye opener is that "Telemark" is just a turn - free heel skiing is hell of a lot more. Good reasoning why you should do the tele the way Mr Parker is proposing. This book changed my free heel skiing for good.

Using only this book and a few random tips from strangers, I picked up telemarking in two days.(I also started with 25 years of alpine experience.)This book is clear, concise, and effective. It made all the difference in the world in getting me skiing expert trails reasonably well by the end of my second day.I am nowhere near handling moguls, glades, ice, cornices, etc., but I did have twenty or so graceful, linked turns in a steep bowl ... This book should get an 11 and be read by every adventurer intheuniverse. It is the inspirational story of Freuchens life adventuring in and around Greenland at the turn of the century.....an amazing life, a remarkable man, a fantastic book. If you plan to read only one book in your life forget about Dosteovsky, Proust, and Shakespeare, and read this. I liked it

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the great adventurers and story tellers.
Unlike many European adventurers who forced their vision upon the natives, Peter Freuchen adopted their ways.He was quite a remarkable individual. His life jumped from one life changing adventure to another. This book covers his life in the Artic, which was remarkable.Later in his life, he wrote a book which covers this material and other adventures (including Alaska, the Soviet Union) called 'Vagrant Viking'. I highly recommend that book too.5-0 out of 5 stars Arctic Adventures

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for cross country and telemark skiers
This is a great book if you are looking for a guide to some of the best cross country and telemark trails, however since i was looking for more of a downhill backcountry guide, this is not really what i was looking for, but it is still a very informative and well written book.

This absolutely user friendly outdoor guide is a "must" for anyone planning a skiing or snowboarding excursion in Vermont or New York. 3-0 out of 5 stars mixed feelings
As a newbie skater, this book offers some good general info and advice as most instructional books do.
4-0 out of 5 stars This was one of the better skating books...
This book has wonderful descriptions about just about everything in skating, except for take off technique. I dont understand why the author goes into extreme detail explaining how to do a three turn before a flip, but barley mentions how to take off into the actual jump.(This has been the case with just about every skating book I have read) Also the pictures are in black and white. The book has some very helpful tips and I think it is worth reading I just wish he would explain take off in a lot more detail.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Excellent Instruction"
This book is excellent for both beginners learning basic figure skating techniques and more advanced skaters who want to improve their overall ability on the ice. It includes helpful advice on improving your technical ability and provides possible mistakes that may slow your progress, so you can treat this book as a sort of "coach". It also includes pictoral descriptions for executing many of the moves, which I found very helpful. However, one downside is that this book was written in 1988 so it is a little old fashioned (there's mention of compulsory figures, which have since been eliminated from competition). However, it still contains all you need to know to improve your skating and I would highly recommend this book as one of the best I have read for skating instruction for both beginners and advanced skaters alike. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining read and a treat for skating fans
Who can fail but sympathize with Ms. Baiul, an anomaly in this glittering sport of young women who usually have it all - looks, money, and loving families. That Oksana managed to achieve greatness with none of the above says it all about her talent. Oksana's fans won't be disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Oksana - professional but not personal
I do not like biographies, yet this book was able to keep my attention. Oksana discusses her life as it relates to various parts of ice skating. The only drawback is that you do not learn about the everyday Oksana. You do not learn about any of her other interests (sports done in her training routine do not necessarily count as "fun, relaxing hobbies"), her favorite foods, favorite types of music, or her feelings about having a family or dating.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for the skater!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Transform your skiing
Unlike most of the ski books I read, this book helped me zero in on my attitudes-- all the little mental numbers I did on myself while trying to improve or just enjoy skiing. It helped me focus on areas I had problems with, without heaping criticism on myself. It changed the way I learned by teaching me constructive things to replace that inner critic with. "You look so loose and relaxed," an instructor who had worked with me before commented. This book shows you how to allow yourself to learn unencumbered by fears. Things I read here helped me when I learned to inline skate, and pavement is a lot rougher than snow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped overcoming fear
I can only recommend this book. I have been fighting fear on the slopes for three years. This book seems to have freed me of fear. Thanks a lot!

5-0 out of 5 stars 26 years of skiing, 6 teaching, and this book is #1
I rad Inner Skiing about 6-7 years ago, and it changed my skiing life. Most everything written about skiing (and other sports, as far as I can tell) is about technique, tricks, how-to's and so on.Inner Skiing is about being a skier - about the fundamental relationship we have to the snow, the mountain, the skis and ourselves.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The original book of Shackleton's adventure
When the Endurance steamed south into the splitting ice pack of the Weddel Sea in the summer of 1914, she carried aboard the renowned British explorer Earnest Shackleton. The Endurance was specially designed and massively constructed by one of the world's finest shipyards, staffed with scientists and qualified volunteers and outfitted with meticulously tested equipment. Shackleton himself was an experienced polar veteran who had once come within a day's march of being the first to reach the south pole. But in spite of careful planning, the Endurance was doomed, and this expedition would be Shackleton's last Antarctic voyage.Unexpected cold weather froze the ship solidly into the ice, and 7 months later, the mounting pressure of millions of tons of ice crushed the three-foot wooden hull. The Endurance sank into the black water, and left the 30 exhausted men marooned on the treacherous melting ice flows of the storm-churned antarctic sea.For six months the poorly-equipped castaways wouldstruggle under inconceivable hardship until the drifting ice broke up enough for Shackleton to lead his expedition in three open lifeboats through freezing open water to a lifeless bit of rock called Elephant Island. With 5 companions aboard the remaining battered lifeboat, Shackleton left his crew and stuck out across the open ocean in a desperate attempt to reach a remote whaling station to obtain help. His faithful men would remain behind to weather the winter storms sleeping under the upended wreckage of a lifeboat -- their lives dangling by the frail promise that he wouldsomeday return. Alfred Lancing is an experienced journalist whose detailed research combines with direct and perfectly-paced prose and a handful of the expedition's original photographs. It is a tale ofleadership, unflagging courage, and determination in the face of impossible odds. But maybe the real definition of heroism is to be undaunted by the impossible. After sixteen days covering 900 miles of water in an amazing feat of open boat navigation, Shackleton struck land at South Georgia Island -- and after a three-day sleepless march over the 10,000 foot mountains in the huge island's interior, Shackleton and his remaining companions finally stumbled into a remote whaling outpost. And 450 days after being shipwrecked, after 5 attempts in three different ships, Shackleton managed to return to Elephant island to rescue his 22 remaining crew members in a tugboat borrowed from the Chilean government -- finally delivering all 29 of his men without the loss of a single life --and making Endurance one of the most inspiring stories of human survival every written.
4-0 out of 5 stars An account of breathtaking courage
The author has clearly been rigorous in piecing together diary extracts and interview notes to put together this account of an adventure, or perhaps ordeal, which required of its survivors a degree of courage, composure and determination that cannot fail to humble yet uplift and inspire the reader. The style of narrative is rather matter-of-fact, rather than dramatic, and its coverage is limited to the expedition itself without dwelling much on the lives of the key players before or after.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible book
Alfred Lansing's book, Endurance, dramatically details the 1914 expedition to the Antarctic led by Sir Ernest Shackleton.Although a non-fiction book, Lansing manages to make it read like a thriller, adventure. He wrote his story using first person accounts, interviews of survivors, journal entries, etc. While sometimes history can be a bit dry, this novel truly makes you feel a part of the adventure and reads very quickly.Ernest Shackleton's leadership abilities ensure not only the survival of the crew, but demonstrate his character as a man.Crew and officers were treated alike and shared in the duties of survival.Order was maintained and his personality and command of the situation enabled the group to survive what could have been a disaster. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cross Country Skiing in Southern California?
SKI TOURS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA filled a major missing link for me - I found it a definitive and very readable book. Now I know a lot more places to go cross country skiing in Southern California. There are 68 trips in the book, complete with trail maps. The trails are in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego Counties and within a one to three hour drive for most Southern Californians.I have now skied nine of the trips. Mr. Anderson's book makes it easy. I found the trail instructions, as well as the directions to the trailheads, clear and easy to follow. It is amazing, in this bastion of fun in the sun, that there are so many places with snow to play on and that it lasts so late into the spring.Read more
