I've read 'em all-- this is the best
Having read every respectable ski instruction book and watched every video available I highly recomend this book to every intermediate and above skier looking to advance. Actually beginners could profit also before the PSIA crowd confuses the simple tricks of skiing on the "new" skis. Skiing well means skiing in all snow conditions and on all types of terrain. As the Deslauriers explain,the same basic physical moves apply to all terrain and snow conditions. Read Chapter 1,then reread it. Do it again. Get it in your head and you'll raise your level several notches. This is the best instructional book in the ski world, bar none. When will they put it on video?
Experts only
This book has a very, very brief chapter on the basics of edging and then it jumps directly to skiing powder, crud, steeps, trees, moguls, and air!Um, needless to say, not a book for your average beginner. Concise and highly informative, an absolute must!!!!

Interview notes for a better book
"Shorthanded" is divided into two parts.The first, and certainly more interesting, part is a 33-page history of the Seals' convoluted financing and ownership situation (highlighted, of course, by Charlie Finley owning the team for a period).I enjoyed this part of the book; it had a good narrative flow.
Oh, the memories!
I enjoyed this book very much, having been a Seals fan.Great reminiscences by Seals players, coaches, and even Krazy George the cheerleader.

Shorthanded is a Power Play
A Seals'fan's delight. A more completed package is doubtful to come along since Kutrzberg has pretty much captured it all. Francoise Allaire is a genius on ice!
I bought this book for my son who has been a goaltender for 8 years. He has absorbed everything he could on goaltending and found this book to teach a vast amount of information that he had never heard of, techniques that were immensly helpful and positive for goaltending.
An excellent guide for non goalie coaches
This is an excellent book for goalie coaches & coaches at the rep or house league level who require assistance in establishing a training and development program for young player and can be applied to adults as well.I have written a guide for adults as we are built differently. email if u rinterested and is for both men & women

A great teaching tool for the coach
I've been a hockey goalie during 18 years. Now it's time for me to get involved in a different way... as a coach. The younggoaler has a lot to learn and a coach can do a lot of damage if he doesn't communicate properlythe techniques. The book is a very good tool for the coach. When buying a book, you would hardly expect to get only a pieceof common sense for your money. Unfortunately, this is the case with thisbook. Its main message is "get yourself a skiing instructor and learn how to ski". I agree, noone learns how to ski (swim, play basketball, etc.)from a book only, but nonetheless the book should advise on techniques, not tell one that he/she needs a coach. I bought this book expecting great things given the FIS and IOC endorsement.What happen was that it forced me to sit down and read critically about my sport.There is alot of worthwhile information here, but there are also a lot of errors.It is very typical of reports about sports written by academics who do not ski.To say that because these scientists could not see "adominal muscules working, in xc skiing therefore they do not contribute to ski skating" shows blunt ignorance of the reality of the sport.Unfortunately, great scientific data is spoiled by wild conclusions based on observation not experience.Buy this book if you are experienced enought to know the difference. ... Libby's a Courageous Woman
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Libby Riddles personally on a cruise with Princess Cruise Line.Her talk was so enlightening that I bought the book.This is a must read for every Iditarod fan or interested person.The grueling schedule and trails will hold your interest until the end of the book.You'll find out what Libby cared on her sled, how she prepared for each checkpoint and what all the mushers have to endure to come out on top of the pack.You'll easily learn to respect the mushers and the love/dedication they have for the Iditarod.

A page turning adventure for all ages!
Libby Riddles is the first woman to win the Iditarod, which is the Alaskan dog-sled race that covers over 1,000 miles. I felt the chill, adventure and excitement of the Iditarod!

The book is awesome.. but....
The book is awesome.. but.... the back cover is almost detaching fom the book.....

Good Overview
Cheers to the author for coming up with the first world wide surf guide book. The book includes helpful info on forecasting, how waves are created, and of course worldwide wave hotspots. It will be interesting to see a second edition of it since there are mistakes in the book. For example, for some areas the charts for best time of year to surf are off, to mention one Puerto Rico's. Also breaks are referred to by the wrong name sometimes and even the by month temperatures seem off (i.e Californias). I was eager to buy the book but once I saw the mistakes I decided to wait for maybe a corrected second edition. I recommend to the author that he researches the "hot spots" a bit more carefully. Also just for the sake of adventure a section discussing the potential of discovery around the world would be interesting to see, say the potential around the South Pacific, or Africa for new waves to be discovered. The book may work as a good beginners guide to where the waves are, but for a specific surf trip a more descriptive and more accurate guide would be invaluable.

although its not as in depth as europe or NA stormrider guiders, The world stormrider guide part 1 gives you some valueble information including color maps, when to go . It even tells you the science of surfing, how swells and tides work. If you are curious about the spots that are around the world, i recommend you buy this book. ... Read more

It's all about the How-To
I'm usually pretty skeptical of How-To books, but this one was recommended to me. It's quite cool. I was able to understand it, and it actually helped me get started snowboarding. I can seriously recommend this book for regular people.

Awesome book. Used it to help decide what equipment to get and to teach my girlfriend the basics. The writing style is easy to read and the contents are great for an introduction. The descriptions and pictures of slipping, edging and traversals made were really illuminating, and instructions on riding powder made me want to go lay some tracks.

Tear-jerker of a read
I guess they say real men don't cry, but this book really tests you. It's written from the first-person perspective about a guy's yearlong effort to get in shape through cross-country skiing, and also to enjoy his relationship with his father during the latter's long bout with terminal cancer.
Read it whether you ski or not
Bill McKibben does a fabulous job of writing about his experience trying to be a better person. He learns, and shares with us, that it is more than just a physical challenge, its an emotional and interpersonal one as well. Beautifully written.

Dawson Makes You Get Off Your Duff...
... and get out to the mountains he loves. The peakbagger's best friend
Having climbed Colorado 14ers for more than 30 years, I've used all available guidebooks.First rule, remember that the info in the book is often wrong -- unless you're willing to think for yourself, avoiding mountains is the best bet. After that, to me Dawson is the best guidebook ever.Roach is good too -- it's good to have both.But in spite of the price difference, Dawson's 2 volumes are well worth it.And please, tread lightly!

Year Round Guide is Tops
I've read seemingly every 14er guide available.Much of the information overlaps as one can imagine.However, what really sets this (and the companion volume as well) one apart is the truly four season information that it provides.Louis gives you ratings for summer and snow climbs as well as ski descents.None of the other 14er guides I've read give you that.These volumes are often compared to Gerry Roach's books which are excellent in their own right.However, in my mind the information in Louis Dawson's guides is better as many of us climb in seasons other than summer! ... I learnt from this book
I was a beginner when I bought this book. I followed the instruction to practice. By the end of that ski season, I could already go down diamond slopes.
Clear advice on skiing
I found this book, with many fine pictures and clear instructions to be very useful, at least for an intermediate skier who wants to improve.I particularly liked the recognition that there is more than one "right way" to ski.I question whether a complete novice could learn without instruction using this book, but the beginners section would probably be a good guide for instructors on useful beginners exercises. ...
