2-0 out of 5 stars It's just OK
Hey, this book is not bad.You get a list of the 100 best ski resorts of the world...mmm...isn't that the title of the book?Good title. The information is very concise. But something is wrong.Something is terribly wrong with a book like this.Ah, yes...the information is easily outdated...nothing you can't get from a web site which has more updated information.I can't think of a good reason to buy this book because it is in black and white so you can't exactly enjoy the photography which there is a terribly "lack of" in the book. You might want to save your money on this one.I did buy it, for your information, but I bought it used for pennies...and I still feel ripped off.Arrgg... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative book
I bought this book for a research project and it was extremely useful and informative and very interesting. I'd recommend it to anyone, but especially snowboarders(a must read). It's always good to know the history of your sport.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lame
Fake, pretentious, and totally dumb if you know anything about snowboarding. If snowboarders were like bands, this writer would be the cheesy a&r rep trying to be cool while making money off the peeps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for all but great for some
This book to many may have seemed lame and false, when in fact was practically written by pioneers such as Burton, Sims, Morrow, and Kemper founders. If you were born after 86 you would get the book, if u were bornbefore its a great, not a must, a great read. I loved it because of howmuch of a taboo it was, it was a current day mystery that wasn't respectedat first, and needed brave people to design the board from a ski with arope, much more than that, but great read. ... The Book is wonderful and a great read--finished it off in one night--left me awestruck and wondering when the next one will be available.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about hockey
The cover is fantastic! Looking at it kind of makes you feel like you've been checked by Gordie Howe himself. That is if being checked by Gordie were a good thing! This is one book you can tell by its cover! Of course what's most impressive is on the inside. 5-0 out of 5 stars More than just hockey

1-0 out of 5 stars Maybe Natural Selection is not such a bad thing after all...
I have heard two of Mr. Gray's earlier monologues and enjoyed them. My friend gave me this this book to read as we were high school classmates of "Ramona", and I anticipated an enjoyable few hours with it. Instead, I was horrified by what I found.5-0 out of 5 stars Going Down
As usual Spalding Gray has done it again.Very entertaining and witted.Just love the audio too, can never get enough of Spalding.I highly recommend all his works.

Every year a buddy and I take a driving trip across North America. Traditionaly we read a Spalding Gray monologue aloud to each other alongthe way (in my opinion they are much better when heard and not read)Thisyear we took The Slippery Slope and found the humour not as cutting orsatirical and found it difficult to laugh at the author's challengesbecause of their typical and mundane nature. 5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping story!
This is an inspiring, suspenseful story full of rich detail about what life on The Ice was like for these brave men who spent almost 3 years there in the early years of this century, when sails were still used on ships. The beauty, richly described by Cherry; the torturous conditions at times, how they kept busy and sane during the long long dark winter....I was completely enthralled even though I knew at least the rough outlines of the story before I began.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too cold!
These guys travelled in temperatures that you wouldn't think humans could survive for more than a few minutes. Some of the places they went were perhaps the worst I could imagine. I remember thinking these guys were K-Raz-ee.It's well worth the read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for anyone interested in Antarctic history
I'm not quite sure who originally wrote that one of the convenient things about Antarctica is the fact that you only need to read a dozen books to know the history of the place and that, as an added bonus, you get the first-hand accounts of the original explorers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
My daughter, a figure skating coach, and I are on our 3rd copy: people keep borrowing this book and keeping it!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Beauty on Ice doesn't exist off the ice!
I have to say I was surprised by Christine Brennan's take on Tonya Harding. Tonya Harding is now a pariah in the world of American figure skating even though she helped many of today's figure skating athletes to become household names and wealthy as well. Tonya doesn't see any of it. It's ironic that Tonya Harding can't skate professionally while convicted rapist Mike Tyson is allowed to box but that's figure skating. Between the 1992 and 1994 Olympic Winter Games, the infamous incident by Nancy's clubbing by one of Tonya's hired goons caught everybody off guard. Poor Tonya, she was the girl from blue collar upbringing, divorced parents, and quite a dysfunctional childhood. I think if this was played out in Hollywood. Nancy and Tonya would have made up before the 1994 Winter Olympics and let it go down in history. No, the FBI was brought in. In the 1992 games, too much attention was paid on Nancy Kerrigan and the plight of her legally blind mother who later claimed that her daughter deserved the gold medal. In 1992, everybody including myself who watched the Olympic games knew about Nancy's poor mother. Nancy got more attention than Tonya and Kristi Yamaguchi who went to win the First Olympic Gold Medal for Ladies' Figure Skating since Dorothy Hamill. Still, she was shadowed by Nancy's blind mother. Since 1994, I became disillusioned when I saw figure skaters past judgment on Tonya Harding. I haven't lost respect for Jayne Torvill because she was actually quite ladylike in all retrospect. Sadly, Tonya was never the graceful skater but an excellent jumper who was the first American woman to land a triple axel. Tonya's happiness was short-lived by an abusive marriage and a US Figure Skating Association that cared more about maintaining a facade of a happy family. I didn't know that Nancy was not well-liked. YOu could have sure fooled me. Even now, Nancy is still the victim of a dumb plot. Had she had any sense, she would have forgiven Tonya and let it go but no it became a nightmare and a dream for the tabloids of the time. My respect for figure skating is gone. I am not surprised by the homosexuality in figure skating because it's so obvious but I wish they would just admit it rather than cover it up now. Even now, you just wonder why some aren't married or dating anybody. Anyway, the sport has changed for the worse in my opinion. It's become corrupted by greed, jealousy, and envy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The grit behind the glamor
Journalist Christine Brennan takes fans of this sport behind the scenes for a brutal but truthful look at a sport known as much for its glitter as its athleticism. Brennan exposes it all, from the pressure of competition to the facades perpetuated by an antiquated skating federation. Using real interviews with the figure skating's top athletes, Brennan covers tragedy and triumph with unbiased professionalism. Highly recommend for skaters and fans of figure skating ... Read more

This book will be appreciated by true T&D addicts, although switching back and forth between their two voices made it seem mildly disjointed.Details of the unglamourous side of life on the road gave a realistic perspective. Not bad,but it somehow left me wanting more.A great deal of trivial details without alot of the substance such a book could have had.Fans will enjoy it,casual readers may not...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
I actually bought this book from the Dan Bylsma WEB site.THe book was sent autographed to my son for this past Christmas. Most of the content is directed toward kids interested in playing hockey and who have questions from how do I do a certain drill to what if my parents are embarrasing me.My 8 year old enjoyed the book very much and continues to read it again and again.I still pick it up as well.If you haven't read the first book "So Your Son Want's to Play in the NHL", another great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey With A Purpose
After receiving the book, I read it throughout the day as opportunity presented itself.I hated to put it down when I had other stuff to do.I felt like I was being forced to leave the game before it was over. I was enchanted by the book as if I'd never read it before, thrilled to play a role by helping with it and to be mentioned in this wonderful contribution to amateur hockey. As I read it, I thought about my roles as a father of a young player, as a coach, and as a coaching educator for USA Hockey. Two overwhelming thoughts came to mind as I read the printed version of the book. The truth conveyed by the material and the fact that at times I fall short of the goals conveyed by that truth from a child's perspective.Even though I speak or write about and teach many of these things quite often, I found myself addressing my mistakes in each of my roles as I read the book. But, even as I found myself addressing my mistakes, I was simultaneously using the ideas in the book to reaffirm many of my beliefs or to assimilate these ideas to address issues from a different perspective. And as stated in the book, perseverance is a key to success.Taking responsibility is a key to success.Learning from mistakes or failure is what truly makes you better."So You Want To Play In The NHL" has given me additional impetus in my goal to constantly strive to improve as a father, a coach and a coaching educator.Thank you for taking the time to inspire even us older hockey guys with a book written for kids, because really, we are all still kids at heart!By addressing the issues from a kid's perspective for kids, I believe you have succeeded in reaching adults as well. The heart of this old kid is much better as a result of the time and effort you have taken to share your thoughts with the hockey world. This new book, "So You Want To Play In The NHL", for kids, and the existing book for adults, "So Your Son Wants To Play In The NHL", set the standards by which all of us in the sporting world should continually strive to achieve. Cordially, Terry Vayda USA Hockey Associate Coach-In-Chief (Southeast District--Florida)

5-0 out of 5 stars required reading
As a coach and someone who knows the personal dedication it takes to achieve life's goals, this book confirms everything I have done in my life and teach to the players on my team. This book is more than a book about hockey. It spells out a recipe for success in life, in and out of hockey(or any team sport for that matter).Every page has something that will inspire you and remind you what is important in life.I am making this book required reading for my team because it confirms everything I have ever said in the locker room and to parents. While this is one man's journey through life to the NHL, the story is one shared by most people in the struggle to define who they are as the grow up and to achieve the goals that they want. ... Not only has it allowed me to get all of the basics quickly, it taught me the all important lesson of what to focus on when I'm practicing these skills. I will be using this book for many years to help me continually refine my technique. Although there are some differences between ice and inline skating, all of the techniques covered in this book relate directly.

Twelve dogs, a sled, and your wits versus 1,023 miles of danger, snow, ice, and wilderness. The Yukon Quest is possibly the toughest race on earth. Held earlier, farther inland, and at a more northerly latitude than its famous cousin, the Iditarod, mushers on the Yukon Quest routinely experience temperatures dropping to 40 below zero, with 50 below not uncommon. Winning isn't everything; just finishing is an achievement in itself. John Balzar tells the story of the Quest, the dogs, and the mushers in Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Patting his own back!!!
This writer is so self-absorbed and busy patting himself on the back that he doesn't even come close to giving an accurate report on this race.Having a LOT of experience with this race, I can truly say, this is the worst account of this race I have ever read.If you want to learn about what it takes to run this race, or what it's like to go through the training, the work, the effort, what the dogs are like, what the north is like.. then read Running North by Ann Mariah Cook. Now THAT is a good book.I have also met John and found him to be arrogant and self-serving while writing this book.He defeats the entire purpose of this book by spending more time trying to sound like an expert, or a "local", trying to sound like he fit in here, but no matter how hard one tries, sometimes they can NOT succeed... and he wondered why people wouldn't talk to him. This is the worst book on this topic I have ever read.It was tough for me to get through it but I did it because I was there during the race that year.I wanted to see what he was going to write next that wasn't accurate...seems he was more infatuated with Aliy Zirkle than the race itself, or getting to see his girlfriend, or pretending that he was one of the mushers himself.Just his account of his "mushing" experience (disaster) was so unbelievable, it made me laugh.I am an experienced musher and I can tell you, that was the most ridiculous thing I have ever read.... the entire book is just a bunch of garbage... but then again, he didn't do his homework, his research, and it shows... horribly!!!Don't bother with it. If this is the only exposure you have to mushing or the dog world, then you will be most misinformed... best to spend your time and money on a different book.DeeDee Jonrowe's book Iditarod Dreams is excellent.Tracks Across Alaska is also excellent, but this... a sad waste!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great...
Absorbing book, probably a good recommendation for anyone interested in the far north and outdoor adventure. John Balzar writes an interesting account of the Yukon Quest, the second-best-known dog-sled race in Alaska after the Iditarod, and the result is an entertaining story covering both the `mushers', their dogs, and the environment surrounding the competition.
5-0 out of 5 stars A look into the Great White North
What a great book. After reading, and now re-reading, this book I wanted nothing more than to pack up, quit my city job, and move to the Far North in search of a life dominated by weather, dogs, and the will to survive.John Balzar does a great job describing a life dependant on dogs and neigbors (even though they may be 50-100 miles away) in the huge landscape of the Yukon and Alaska.Although the book mostly focuses on the Yukon Quest dog-sled race, it gives the reader an intriguing look into the culture of the people in and around the dog-sledding culture and the Quest itself.Definately worth the read! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best hockey book i own...great for any sport
Everything i had hoped for when i first saw it...a thorough introduction to the sports psychology of ice hockey, though it could certainly be applied to any sport or any competitive performance endeavor.this book allowed me to really improve several things i have been working on - productive visualization, mental preparation for games, and controlling destructive emotions like frustration and apprehension.it's a well written book with tons of examples and stories from NHL and other players.i had to write all over it, too, which is always a sign of something i really use.i plan to continue rereading it and integrating the techniques into my play and development.in addition to the main part, there are special chapters on offense and scoring, playing d, playing goal, and rehab.good stuff.like i said, i think this book is a major positive addition to anyone's training program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Playing Better Hockey, and Life Too!
This is a very readable book with some excellent mental coaching tips. It describes a number of techniques for managing emotions and using power thinking and imagery that I have found to be very useful. I liked the chapters on a winning attitude and what it takes "to make it" in the NHL. I thought they offered some practical suggestions to build confidence, and mental toughness. The strength of the book for me is that it is very practical. There are lots of excellent stories and examples that illustrate the author's experience and techniques. And I like how he relates his observations and advice to what many NHL players and coaches have to say about their mental game. I would recommend it to any hockey player or coach. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dream,A Team
I couldn't put it down. A GREAT book!. I read it over and over again. It's very inspiring. Helped to recongized the importance of fulfilling a dream. It's way more than a hockey book it teaches life gulidlines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey Insider tells all.
If you like hockey or even if you don't you won't be able to put this book down. It's moving to the point of being captivating. In telling his comeback story Ken Baker reveals much about the inside workings of minor league pro hockey. He is transparent about his own life as well as presenting an expose on pro hockey. It's easy reading but also inspiring. This is one you'll want to read and pass on to your friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very inspiring..I could not read it fast enough!
This book is fantastic. It gives anyone with a dream encouragement.Mr. Baker had to overcome tremendous forces to realize his dream of returning to hockey.I played hockey and I had to quit because of head injuries but I think about returning again to play.Well this book certainly gives one a source of inspriation. He writes really well, and I found myself wishing that I could read a lot faster many times because the book was so exciting that I could not wait to find out what would happen next. The way he writes his book makes the reader feel as if he/she is actually there and living Mr. Baker's dream along with him on every step of the way.I would recommend this book to a lot of people, even those who are not particularly interested in hockey. It does dig down into the unseen side of minor league hockey and some of the issues that are probably left unknown by the average fan, but it should make people appreciate the players more by knowing what they have to endure and play through. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars a decent book
this book was decent I got it because I wanted to get in shape like a hockey player due to a class offering for the next semester at my college of ice hockey (they never had it) there where not many hockey fans at my school so it was next to impossible to do half the workouts because they involved more then 1 person but with a little tinkering you can help it fit your needs

2-0 out of 5 stars Bland at best
All in all, I picked up very few ideas from this generally bland manual, and the illustrations (clay figurish poseables) can, in their most flattering light, be described as abstract (or boring or unhelpful). There is not a single photo of an actual hockey player in the entire book. Large sections provide mostly-irrelevant info, in a well printed format trimmed in color.Towards the back their is some basic strategy that is useful, but as w/ many hockey manuals, these require a great deal of patience to piece together from the diagrams--nothing new.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on all the basics.
Since the publishing of this book, Micheal Smith has become the General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. After reading his book, I can understand why. Mr. Smiths insights into hockey coaching are very easy tofollow, with increasing skill level for various ages, from 8 year olds tojunior. He covers all aspects of hockey coaching, from preseasonpreparation, including off ice drills and individual skill development, through to description of systems for defence and offence. Well balancedthat covers a lot. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Back when hockey was played by real men.
This book is a must read for all current and former Islander fans.So many great memories were rehashed while reading this book. The only problem I had with this book was that it had to end.By the way, not only should fans read this book, it should be required reading material for all current islanders' players. The book will bring you back to a better time and place when there were no ads on the boards, no half naked 16 year old girls skating between whistles, no instigation penalties, and most importantly, when the NY Rangers did not have the means to buy a Stanley Cup.Too bad hockey turned into the traveling circus as it is today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lockout Relief
Really, really enjoyed reading this book. From the foreword to the last page, the story of how the 1980 New York Islanders captured the Stanley Cup really comes alive.I felt the goosebumps of a 10 year old kid all over again as I read this book.My only regret: it's a bit short. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Never Give Up
Lennard Bickel's "Mawson's Will" is the story of Australian geologist Douglas Mawson's 1911-1912 Expedition to Antarctica, and more particularly, his desparate struggle to return alone from a sledging expedition gone badly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bickel's Gift
Rarely has fiction served the truth so well. Rarely has the truth served fiction so well.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Unbelievable Tale of Courage and Will

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful sport's ugly secrets exposed
I endorse this book not only as an Amazon Reviewer but as a skater. The dirty deals, corrupt judging, and federation attempts to advance their favorite skaters at the expense of equally talented but less-popular athletes (who, for whatever reason, don't fit their cookie-cutter out of date "image"), Jackson tells all. Should be required viewing for everyone in the sport, especially the federations, who must take a hard look at their own ethics and make some changes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Im whiter than white
This book goes more into the detail of this judge "coming out" rather than the real issues in the skating world. He talks about encounters with other gay judges which have nothing to do with the scandal in Salt Lake City or the alledged corruption at the ISU and USFSA.He fails to make his case and points fingers without facts.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Edgy "On Edge"
If you think figure skating is crooked, this book comes close to absolutely proving it.It's no wonder that the author, an international judge, appears to have been booted out by the figure skating establishment over his attempt to set up a rival figure skating union. The book covers the author's not particularly distinguished skating career and his coming out, aspects of his life I somewhat surprisingly intereting. He declines to diss dirt about the skaters, but does rip the judging establishment into small pieces. ...
