5-0 out of 5 stars The most informative Book on Skiing
I personally found this book easy to understand, the authors made sure that they gave only the information that you needed, when you needed it,And all the information was explained in detail. With the companion video it justgets better. To put it simple, this book explains it all from A to Ski!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational. The only ski training book you need.
This is the most up-to-date and complete guide I have run across. Its coverage is encyclopedic, yet remarkably succinct, covering every issue from equipment to skills, drills, and mental approaches. It should beuseful to avid skiers and instructors at any level, supplanting volumes ofmanuals normally available only to professional instructors, yet theexercises detail a path that even novices can effectively pursue todevelop the most refined technique. The book is perfectly complemented bythe companion video which gives clear evidence that the book'sprogression of exercises can cluminate in the gorgeous turns the Ms. PostFoster, her coauthors, and demo team do so effortlessly. The combinedeffect is truly inspirational.5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all skiers who want to perfect carving
This is a fantastic book for all level of skiers. It will take you through the steps to using your shaped skies as they were meant to be used. By the way: There is a video that accompanies this book - it is also excellent. And should be watched the first several times with the sound - and thenmute the sound and just watch the skiing. Maybe Amazon.com could supply it? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent details, a little thin on 'world' coverage
This is a very good overview of some of the world's best, and best-known waves, as of 2006. There are around 80 waves described in fairly good detail, each wave covering 2 pages of notes and pictures. It includes monthly swell and wind data, tides, wave lengths and sizes, surfable days/month, board recommendations (but no surfer weights), access, hazards, general travel issues, surf stories and histories, cultural backgrounds, nearby spots, good photos, surfers top10s, and various environmental issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE picture volume
Wow, what a great and such awesome picture volume. This book not only shows you pictures from the Arctic and the Antarctic, it particularly reveals the true differences between the two polar regions...they ARE truly different and fascinating! This book also delivers very-high quality photography, which can easily tempt you into travelling to such exotic destinations.5-0 out of 5 stars GREENLAND REVISTED THROUGH A LITTLE DANE'S EYES.
Turning to page 74, my Danish-born wife, Aino, was amazed to discover her little town of Scoresbysund. She spent her fomative years(age 5-12)growing up there, where her father, Dr. Werner Mortensen, served as the sole doctor for the area of 3 villages. 5-0 out of 5 stars Experience the stunning beauty of the Earth's poles!
This is much more than a coffee table book, though its unique photographs of the pristine beauty of the Arctic and Antarctic would impress even the most casual of browsers.A short story about each photo is included, along with more general, thoughtful and poignant commentary from someone that is truly in touch with the global environment.Rowell is one of the great nature photographers, and this is a stunning collection ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best instructional DVD available
This DVD (book) is great for any intermediate/advanced skier wanting to improve. I think that this DVD is even better than Lito Tejada Flores's DVDs. It is hard to say, I watched Lito's DVD before this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for expert skiers
This book is essential if you want to learn the PMTS system which Harald Harb created. I would recommend that you do that. This is a book for experts and assumes you already have learned to ski, but it would be very useful even if you are a new skier. Just realize that it won't teach you how to snowplow or stem-christi. The ski season is over now (April 06) and I got this too late to use it for 05-06.But, I can tell you that this book is very well presented. Without it I would have had a very hard time understanding how to carve my skis using this technique or understanding why I wouldn't want to make some mistakes that would not be obvious. Important details are revealed in the book that I have found nowhere else. The DVD that comes with the book is a powerful presentation that follows the book's format. The DVD shows some excellent examples of how to do exercises and how to actually ski the technique. It contains demonstrations of using the technique in many types of difficult terrain. This includes bumps which I am particularly interested in where carving is an especially difficult task. I was already aware of this system from several other sources. Without this book, I doubt that I would ever have been able to do it correctly. The book and the DVD work very well together.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great method-- but HH could use an Editor.
I read Anyone Can Be An Expert Skier 1 and also had the DVD. There was no question as to whether I should get this second volume. I have to say, this season I've decided to stick with one learning method and PMTS is it. And this season, I'm skiing better than ever. I've even had the opportunity to ski with one of Mr. Harb's colleagues and be taught the method firsthand as well. I can say, it's even simpler than it looks in the books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well intentioned but superficial.
Given that this is virtually the ONLY book in existence concerning women's ice hockey, I'd give this book a 5.The authors and publisher deserve plaudits for writing about this subject. On the downside, this book, when compared to objective standards of quality and editing, stands in need of improvement and could have benefited from further refinement. One example: One entire chapter is devoted to just one woman from the sport (out of many that could have been chosen) who blathers on and on and on about her views of ice hockey.(Who cares?)This chapter of the book reads as if the two writers just set a tape recorder down in front of the person and then typed everything she said verbatim. If I wanted to read a magazine interview, I could have gone elsewhere such as reading women's ice hockey stories and interviews in some of the hockey trade journals.A book is supposed to be a SYNTHESIS of various points of view.I appreciate the two authors showing me their raw interview material but this kind of self-promotion by one individual female ice hockey player belongs in an appendix at the BACK of the book, and NOT in a book chapter. Certainly everyone would agree that this kind of monologue by one single female ice hockey player SHOULD NOT HAVE CONSTITUTED AN ENTIRE BOOK CHAPTER!C'mon!Let's do some of our own writing and research. And what qualifications does this person have to presume to speak for the entire sport anyway?Second point of criticism:While the story of women's ice hockey is in part a story of sexism and the struggle between the sexes, I think the tone of the book and the title could have been less adversarial and resentful toward the existence of men's ice hockey."Too Many Men on the Ice" makes it seem like a zero sum game. Can't men as well as women play the sport? The title suggests not.In fact, the title and the tone of the book suggest that there are "too many men on the ice" playing the sport to the exclusion of women. This is not what wome! n's ice hockey is about. There should be enough room in the sport for both men and women to play ice hockey. This isn't a war between the sexes.Women just want to be recognized and granted equal rights to train, get appropriate coaching, ice time, etcetera just like the men.Do the authors really believe that there are "too many men on the ice?"If so, I am disappointed in them as people and as female journalists and authors. The authors' book title and their hostile and adversarial tone toward male ice hockey players undercuts what these fine women players stand for:No one should be saying that there are "too many men on the ice!"Nor should anyone ever say that there are "too many women on the ice."There should be enough ice time for everyone who wants to play the sport. The book comes off as a well intentioned but somewhat superficial attempt to cover the sport.I suspect other writers will come along and pick up where these two left off.But nonetheless, hats off to these two young authors for devoting themselves to a worthy subject. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This does the job
This is the book that has elevated the hockey game of a 33 year old goaltender.I've been using it for myself and for the midget hockey team I coach. It definitely gives the team the edge when the the drills are executed on a regular schedule during the season and off season. This is required reading for my youth team and it has not failed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great skiing style; overblown writing
This book has the best advice for the intermediate, intuitive skier.I was an very good intermediate skier for years on my old, long, straight skis and finally bought a pair of those new shaped things.I liked them, but didn't see much advantage because I would always skid my turns with both legs and "muscle" my way down mountain, having fun and coming home with sore thighs. After reading the first chapter of this book I become a significantly better skier in one day.One hour, actually. The technique is that good - I ski better, faster, turn more easily, and come home with no leg fatigue at all.I get better each time I go now, instead of going for years and never getting any better.
5-0 out of 5 stars You truly can break through with this book
I have always been a skier stuck in the `intermediate rut'; if I was even that good. Two things are for sure.I started skiing at about 30 years of age and reached the point after a couple years of skiing about 1 week a year, where I could get down any blue and most black runs, but would look erratic and out of control (I was) doing so. Any I stayed at that level for about the next 10 years, with virtually no improvement.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Help Intermediate Skiers Move Up
This is a great book for intermediate skiers. It is well-written with a logical progression of information and exercices. This is not really a book for people who are already expert skiers looking for extreme skiing advice (although there are some good introductory sections on skiing powder, bumps and steep terrain).

2-0 out of 5 stars Not For Everyone
If you are a huge hockey fan, with knowledge about players and teams, new and old, throughout Canada and at all age levels, you are the right person for this book.Reading about places, people, and teams that I didn't know anything about was very frustrating and made it hard to keep reading.A good portion of the book was just comparing Gretzky and Crosby. That was interesting, in moderation.I was looking for a book to tell all about Sidney Crosby and his trip to the NHL.This book has that, but it came along with a lot of extra stuff that was unnecessary.

1-0 out of 5 stars A bit painful
OK, any time a new star pops up there is an author wanting to make a quick buck. I knew better than to jump on the first unofficial biography but did anyways. Like any book of this genre, the entire thing comes off as "I talked to someone who talked to someone who once knew Sidney and based on that we can deduce this...". It was clear from the author's account that they stalked the Crosby family for a period of time and despite that effort failed to gain any deep insights from Sidney or his family. This entire book could have been written after reading newspaper clippings and perhaps a 30 minute interview with Sidney. My recommendation - wait until Sidney lives up to the hype (and I suspect he will!) and then read his official biography. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Book does justice
Even an non-dog mushing fan from Anchorage can acknowledge the huge contributions Joe Reddington made for our great state. This biography by Lew Freedman does great justice to a great Alaskan, tracing his path from the lower 48 states up to Alaska and his family life, adventures and achievements while in Alaska. Reddington have been acknowledge founder of the famous Iditarod Race to Nome, one dog mushing race every Alaskan virtually follow even if he/she isn't a fan.5-0 out of 5 stars (4.5) Honoring a true Alaskan hero.
Joe Redington, Sr., may not have been an Alaskan by birth, but any resident of the state would agree that he was, and remains, a symbol of the Alaskan spirit. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Redington always had a fascination with the rugged far-north, and read every book on Alaska he could get his hands on. In 1948, at the age of 31, he finally made the decision to pack up his family and move there. They homesteaded in Knik, off the Parks Highway, on the northwestern side of Knik Arm, and that's how Redington got involved with sled dogs. Mushing was an effective way to get from place to place, and Knik Kennels was born. By chance, the property opened directly onto the historic Iditarod trail, which by that time was in poor shape owing to disuse. Redington cleared a section of the trail for his own use, and soon became caught up in the route's historical significance. The famed 1925 "Serum Run" had followed that trail when there was no other means of rushing life-saving medication to diptheria-stricken Nome.5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Joe Redington!
I was so pleased with this book that I felt compelled to encourage more people to read it. It offers the history of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race which is interesting enough, but more than that, it is the story of one man who gave everything he had to Alaska and dog mushers everywhere. If you are looking for an inspirational read, this is it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you (ice) experienced?
Jeff Lowe's earlier book, the Ice Experience, was a companion text to Yvon Choinard's Climbing Ice, and those two formed the vast majority of the printed information on technical ice climbing for several decades. Now his new book eclipses everything else on the market for its scope, practicality, and good looks (the photos are one of the highlights of the book).5-0 out of 5 stars All you need know about ice climbing and a little more
Jeff Lowe did a wonderfull job explaining the climbing techniques and reasons behind the technique. The knowledge in the book range from basic crampon technique to desparate overhanging dry tooling. All that is completed by excellent story of the frozen world

3-0 out of 5 stars lots of data; lack of concept; slightly out-of-date
I am a firm believer that understanding of the mechanics of a carving ski and of the forces transferred between the skis and the skier as he makes his way down the slope are necessary to better understand why one or another skier's action may help to intiate a turn, or shorten its radius, or, in contrast, will lead to a skidded turn. "The physics of skiing" is the only book I could find which addresses the mechanics and physics of skiing. It starts with the physical properties of snow and its formation in the atmosphere, then discusses the properties of snow equipment (mostly downhill skis, briefly snowboards and cross-country skis), and then goes into dynamics of gliding, wedging, and carving. The book is written as a college textbook with numerous (although fairly simple) equations and diagrams of forces. It requires a sufficiently strong background in physics. Although it contains a large amount of interesting data, I was not quite satisfied with it for two reasons. First, it lacks a concept. It is more a review of different literature sources on skiing-related topics than an analysis combining understanding of physics of skiing with a discussion of how this knowledge is applicable to modern skiing techniques. It provides the readers with the background theory, but does not lead to any suggestions how to benefit from this understanding and improve their skiing technique. Too bad that the authors did not have a good ski instructor in their company to make the book more useful and down-to-earth. Secondly, since it is based on references published between 1977 and 1997, part of the discussion is more applicable to the old almost straight skis than to modern supersidecut skis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to Know about Skiis and Snow? This book will tell you
As a ski instructor the subject of how and why these damn things work as well as how to set up your skiis has always been of interest. This book will give you 95% of the answers to those questions. The book covers down hill, cross country as well as a catagory called adventure skiing. I will be ordering extra copies to give to my skiing friendsRead more

Editorial Review

When explorers such as Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen, and Robert Falcon Scott all set off to Antarctica in the early years of the 20th century, the polar regions were among the last truly unexplored areas of the world--and arguably the least hospitable. Scott lost his life, pinned down in a howling blizzard only 11 miles from his supply depot; Shackleton lost his ship, crushed in the ice. Even those who survived the icy wastes did so only with enormous effort. And yet, there is something about Antarctica that beckons people; eighty years after Shackleton's voyage, Sara Wheeler answered the call, leaving her comfortable home for "the Great White." 4-0 out of 5 stars Hisdiory of Antarctica
This is a good choice for a predeparture read for people going to Antarctica as tourists. Of course, you can always read Shackleton's, Scott's, Amundsen's and Fienne's accounts of their epic journeys into the unknown, but that'll take you a long time, and you may be a bit distracted by the old-fashioned language therein. For a modern description of what life is like in the Antarctic nowadays, and what goes on in the head of a thirtyish female when she gets to visit (for free) with the scientists down there, you can't do better than this one.
1-0 out of 5 stars I felt sorry for the trees that died to make this book
Once in a while a person accidentally stumbles on an especially annoying book. One written particularly because a desperate publisher made a phone call, or mailed a letter with a check to an author with the words: "It's time to write another one, Shirley..." and the author hurled herself to write, without a plan, without ideas and the only thing that came out was a dull diary filled with self pity, anti-Americanism, sexism and generally criticism... Well, this is one of those books and I truly feel sorry for the trees that have to die annually to satisfy the erroneous marketing projections of underpaid book editors in the current cost-cutting environment (especially after the advent of Print-on-Demand) in order to deliver such hideous and mind numbing gems. Yet I am also grateful. I'm grateful for these sacrifices because they serve to carry a message to the reader, which he or she can carry to you the broader audience. That message is - DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS BOOK AND THIS AUTHOR.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great read
I happened upon a free reviewer copy of this book at work, took it home and let it sit for a while, then read it on a summer camping trip. Wonderful stuff and makes me want all the more to visit Antarctica. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Eh...
Stan Fischler is touted as "the dean of American hockey journalists", but as Fischler himself says in his comparison of Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe, don't confuse *most prolific* with *greatest*.What seems like a promising book about one of the NHL's most storied franchises is fettered by typical Fischler weak writing and superficial analysis chock full of meaningless superlatives and platitudes.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful to a dummy like me
I had no idea about the sport whatsoever but having read the book I feel like a professional (even though I have not tried playing it yet!). The book is well-organized, very informative and fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing 'Dumb' about it!
The book is great as a stand alone, or as a backup for those of us who have embarked on our curling careers already, and need a little extra help remembering all the phrases, shots, rules, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to the sport
I'm one of the few people I know who has the entire "For Dummies" library, ranging from auto repair to gastro-intestinal surgery.CURLING FOR DUMMIES is a welcome addition to the set, especially since the popularity of the sport has skyrocketed in recent years due to winter olympic coverage.Whether you intend to start your own local curling team, or whether you're simply interested in following the Canadian league with satellite television or some kind of short wave radio--CURLING FOR DUMMIES will acquaint you with all of the rules and nuances of the games, from techniques and ice conditions, to a lucid explanation of what all that yelling is about and what that one person is doing with the broom.Thank you Bob Weeks, for opening the door to a beautiful ballet, crossed with a chess match, and taking place on ice, mostly with Canadians. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe she did the whole thing!
I am a big fan of stories of artic adventure, and this is one of the best.In this day of snow mobiles and ATVs, we have a woman at 50 -- author Helen Thayer -- setting out to walk to the magnectic north pole, pulling her own sled and accompanied by an Inuit dog she had only known for a couple of days.On her first day out, she suffers such terrible frostbite of her fingers they become almost useless.(I would have called it quits right there.)Then come polar bears -- one the world's most deadliest creatures. And they keep on coming. Some curious, some life-threatening.But, she continues on her amazing journey, not for fame or fortune, but for scientific information for her program Adventure Classroom. There are some fantastic photos included and very helpful maps. Her writing style is breezy and compelling. It's trimph of the human spirit and the bonding of a dog and companion. What a terrific book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Explorer and Her Dog
An extraordinary true story of courage, determination and fortitude. Every chapter not only contains the wow factor but is an illustration of what the human spirit is capable of. Thayer is an accomplished writer who keeps the reader wanting more. An incredible story of a woman and her faithful dog Charlie, as they endure the hardships of polar travel on foot together with no dog teams or snowmobiles or resupply. 5-0 out of 5 stars Described in vivid, engaging detail
Polar Dream is the personal memoir of Helen Thayer, the first woman (and the oldest person at age 50) to travel on foot, unresupplied, to the magnetic North Pole. Her harrowing trek on skis for 27 days, aided only by a dog trained to warn her of approaching bears, is described in vivid, engaging detail, as are her seven encounters with polar bears which she survived through skill, luck and quick thinking. Black-and-white photographs, including ones taken by the author during her trek, enhanced a narrative of profound insights into the beauty and wildness of the arctic. Readers who appreciate true life adventure will enjoy the excitement and wonder of Helen Thayer's Polar Dream. ... Read more
