5-0 out of 5 stars This book covers things that the others don't!!
This book was extremely helpful to me. Not only does it cover thecomplicated stuff such as backwards crossovers but also the things no oneelse talks about. Things like getting up after you fall down! Another plusis the pictures. Everything from proper stopping techniques to the best wayto put on all your gear step by step. This book is a must if you'rethinking about playing ice hockey!

5-0 out of 5 stars Now there's REALLY no excuse for women not to play hockey.
I've never seen hockey skills and strategy described as clearly as Aaron Foeste has in this book (without any oversimplifying or patronizing!). (Bruce Curtis' excellent photos don't hurt, either.) Skate, don't walk! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars KICK SAVE AND A BEAUTY!
"WITHOUT FEAR" by Kevin Allen and Bob Duff is one of the best books ever published on the history of NHL goaltenders. This just published 280 page hard cover coffee table edition is a must for hockey fans of all ages, and especially all those junior goalies out there? The 50 greatest goalies in history are ranked and profiled in great detail.Hockey legend Johnny Bower gives his commentary on each selection as well. One can't argue with the selection of the 50 goalies, but you can have fun with friends, arguing if Patrick Roy[#1 ranked]is the greatest of them all?All the great names of the past and present are here to read about, like Terry Sawchuk, Glenn Hall, Jacques Plante, Ken Dryden, Eddie Giacomin, Tony Esposito, and Gump Worsley just to name a few from the old school.Modern players like Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Dominik Hasek, Ed Belfour, Mike Vernon and Curtis Joseph are some of the newer entries. Some of the goalies profiled like Rogie Vachon, Lorne Chabot, Davey Kerr and Roger Crozier were never elected to the hall of fame, but are surely deserving of consideration?I consider this book to be a bible of goaltending history, and a must have book to make any hockey library complete. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed
This book gave me insight into the competitive world of ski racing and I found it very informative. Maier's comeback from his horrible accident is indeed inspiring, but I found the book way too long and detailed to keep my interest from waning. I finished it, but it was tedious. A good editor and a little more flair could have made this a great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Comeback
Herman's book can be subtitled "Don't count me down and out just yet...." And this is the recurring theme throughout.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
I have always been a fan of Hermann Maier - not many have the ability to bounce back like he can. I bought the book for my son who is just learning to ski and he really enjoyed the biography. It is a good against all odds story and I would encourage anyone looking for a gift for an aspiring skier to send them a copy.

4-0 out of 5 stars How it all happened
As a kid, I was fascinated with the WHA, whose remaining teams merged into the NHL just as I reached the point in my childhood when I became a fanatic for the sport.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Rebel League
I found this book to be informative, funny and enlightening. It has a realistic sense of what the hockey world is like. How this league managed to stay alive as long as it did still amazes people 26 years later. It brings to life the zany characters and amazing athletes only hockey could attract. A must read for all hockey lovers!

4-0 out of 5 stars That 70's League
Wonderful book that brought back many childhood memories. However, there were a few discrepencies. I recall, in the mid-70's, watching the Toronto Toros games on local TV; I believe it was Global-TV who broadcast the matches. This dispels the life of the league never having any TV exposure. Did other cities have similar local TV coverage of their teams? Also, the book never explains why no one ever tried to launch a franchise in hockey-mad Montreal. The chapter on the Nordiques was a little too long and dry; but I understand the uniqueness of the team that made it important until Eric Lindros destroyed that. The WHA business philosophy of wide-open entrepreneurialism versus the NHL's fiscal conservatism and anti-union exploitation helped put the now-dead league's importance into a good context. The WHA also revealed that pro hockey can fail in Canada (Calgary, Ottawa). I believe the WHA's big mistake was competing in NHL cities (Philly/Vancouver; Chicago; New York). Had the WHA focused exclusively on non-NHL cities, I'm confident it would not have seen so many franchises transfer and go belly up. The Pheonix, San Diego, Houston introduction of the sport is not accorded the proper credit for paving hockey's way into the Sun Belt. This accolade is often awarded exclusively to Wayne Gretzky regarding his 1988 trade to Los Angeles. This book is filled with drama and is good for the casual hockey fan and not just the die-hard puckheads.

Like the other reviews, this book has very few information about skiing, but it is very detailed and informative about land training before the skiing season. So if you are looking for something for actual skiing techniques this is not your number one book. But for land training it can be...

Editorial Review

Soon after the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole in 1911, his Anglo-Irish rival, Sir Ernest Shackleton, sought to top the feat by making his way from one end of Antarctica to the other on sledge. He set off with a crew of 28, including scientists and a movie cameraman, but the voyage turned disastrous when Shackleton's ship, the Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the straight-ahead momentum of an ice breaker
His party stranded on an ice floe hundreds of miles from their destination, beyond the reach of the outside world -- even had the outside world known they needed help, or where to look -- his ship crushed by countless miles of pack ice and supplies running low, Ernest Shackleton spent not a moment in lamentation. He set about saving his crew and himself. They made their way to a small, desolate bit of island shore, from which Shackleton and five men journeyed 800 miles in a 22-foot open boat across the most dangerous sea in the world. A trek through miles of snow-covered mountain wilderness finally brought rescue. And everybody survived! Shackleton's is an epic tale of true adventure and derring-do, and he tells it with the straight-ahead momentum of an ice breaker diving into the pack. He sees beauty in the Antarctic, and he carries a touch of poetry (Browning, anyway) in his soul. He is also a detail man, and his flights of descriptive eloquence bog down amid facts, figures, wind speeds and diatomous striations. But this piling-on of minutiae proves riveting in the action sequences (most of the book). We feel like we are there. Having told his own party's tale, Shackleton gives a useful if anticlimactic account of the Ross Sea wing of the expedition - a story with its own generous measure of adventure, heroism and poignancy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poor Shackleton
Poor Shackleton. In all his life it seems he allways came late or second, allmost made it or, as in this story, did not reach his goal at all.5-0 out of 5 stars Quite a tale of human survival
I want to dispell a couple of myths that seem to be pervading a handful of the reviews for this book.First, this book is NOT a cure for insomnia. This book is unbelievable exciting, and if it puts you to sleep so quickly, then your attention span has obviousley been severely warped by television or some other dumbing-agent.Secondly, the language, though written 80+ years ago, is not that challenging.I'm no linguist, but I didn't notice a difference between Shakleton's phrasing and word choice and the writing of today's writers. The fact that it was written so long ago does not make it boring.I think his book has aged quite well. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the backcountry enthusiast
If you are planning a winter/spring backcountry trip and want accurate, detailed information on routes, terrain, and level of difficulty for some of the best skiing/snowboarding terrain in California than this is the perfect book. The book is well organized, clearly written andbeautifullyillustrated. Everytime I pick up the book I find myself mentally planningnew trips and plotting descent routes on the photographs. An addedplus to the book is the wealth of information that it contains on preparingfor a backcountry experience. The author covers everything from avalanchedanger to equipment to bring on an extended trip. He even includes anexcellent website for those who want more information. There always isa question in my mind when I read any backcountry guide about the accuracyof the information. Who wants to set out on a trip only to find out thatthe route maps or the descriptions don't match the terrain? The author issomeone with extensive backcountry experience who has done each of the 50trips described in the book at least once. We all sould be so lucky! Havingtaken two trips with the author that are detailed in the book, I can saythat he did an excellent job of describing the routes and the terrain. Ifyou are someone who is looking for backcountry ski/snowbaording adventure, this book will make your trip planning a whole lot easier. Enjoy

4-0 out of 5 stars An essential primer
Having made the decision (later than most!) to retire my 195cm straight sided GS skis, I needed to better understand how to adapt my technique to the new shaped slalom 165cm skis I bought. Lisa Densmore's book is a really good primer on the essentials of technique and how this has changed in relation to the various 'downhill' disciplines. There is the bonus reading on pre-season training and how methods have evolved plus a section on ski preparation that is easy to follow and practical. The clarity and authority of the writing invites reading this book time and again.Do bear in mind that things have continued to evolve over the five years since the book was published. Ski lengths have gone down further and additional techniques like the short reaching turn have emerged. However, the core of this book is solid, competitively priced and well presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for good skiers trying to get better
I was skiing on NASTAR courses and consistently getting Bronze medals; I was a pretty good skier and I could get down any slope but I could not break out of the Novice NASTAR category.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE one-stop resource for racing instruction
I was in an REI store in Baltimore a few years ago when I stumbled on this book and promptly bought it.I had read a few other similar guides but I was still having difficulty grasping the concept of a proper Giant Slalom turn.Lisa Feinberg Densmore's SKI FASTER clearly and succinctly got the message across.Helpful photos of the "wrong" way as well as the "right" way really gave me an understanding of what I should be striving for.Although I have a long way to go, this nifty tome has helped me shave significant seconds off my recreational race league times.I have only one request.Lisa, when are you going to put it all on video?I've searched the web looking for an instructional video for recreational GS racers and none exist! With your broadcast background, you'd be a natural to produce one.As my club's racing captain, I an assure you there is a market out there!Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars As dense as the ice shield...
Like the previous reviewer, I too quailed at the start of this book. Immediately I was plunged to half page paragraphs and dense terms, swimming between excessive description and dense science. But, I'm a geologist. I've been to Antarctica. I knew I could do it...2-0 out of 5 stars Heorism - required
The planning to buy this book was detailed and meticulous. Consultations had to be held with interested parties (my sons) and the wait for it to arrive was lengthy - at least ten days. 4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read but you still can't seem to get enough.
Stephen Pyne is a difficult writer, but the depth and meticulous nature ofhis intelligence pulls you back to him even though you tell yourself tolighten up and read a good mystery. Three cheers to university presses (Uof Iowa and U of Washington) for putting and keeping this book in print. The Ice touches on everything about Antarctica: the history, the landscape, the literature, the geology, the biology. 5-0 out of 5 stars more than just a coffee table book!
I originally bought this book as a gift, but ended up keeping it for myself! I have never seen a "coffee table book" that is so well written. 3-0 out of 5 stars Average Book.
The book does a good job outlining the tracking methods that the Benoits use to consistently harvest large bucks. There are also several interesting stories of deer hunting adventures within the book.
3-0 out of 5 stars If you are stump sitter, this book is not for you
If you track or stalk deer then you can learn a lot from this book. The Benoit's are quite remarkable with their year over year successes. However, if you are a stand hunter or hunt in private land areas that don't allow tresspassers then this book is basically worthless other than the nice pictures in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tracking Big Bucks on Snowy Days

5-0 out of 5 stars A sure fire bet for any mammoth fan on your list
The photographs alone are worthy of buying this book. There are plenty of rare b&w shots of mammoth from the turn of the 20th century on up and prime photos of the Mccoy legend. One of my favorite shots is Dave's Harley with skis strapped to it--circa late '30's! In addition, the text is nicely written giving you a sense of the key players in the development of mammoth as a ski town, mammoth in the world of ski racing, and nice vignettes on some unique things to the eastern sierra--from Schat's Bakkery to big horn sheep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is awesome! The pictures are excelent and the information is great.Nice to know what Mammoth used to look like before it became the famous place that it is today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love skiing? Love the Sierra? Love Mammoth? This is for you.
Anyone who likes skiing will love this book. Forstenzer's familiarity with the Sierra makes it one that won't just sit around on the coffee table. He writes engagingly and tells great stories about the early days of skiing in Mammoth and its culture, how the ski area was built and some of the people involved. The photographs are astonishing and well worth the price alone, but in combination with the writing Forstenzer lets us glimpse what made Mammoth Mountain the great ski resort it has become. This is a terrific book about past and present skiing days at Mammoth. Like most any ski item associated with Warren Miller - breathtaking! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A skillfully researched and smoothly presented chronicle of man versus nature throughout the centuries
Sarah Moss (Lecturer in American and English literature) presents The Frozen Ship: The Histories and Tales of Polar Exploration presents true stories of Arctic and Antarctic voyagers who dared to make dangerous and often fatal journeys to the icebound poles. Chronicling explorers, missionaries, and archaeologists ranging from Viking settlers and Renaissance conquerors to modern-day scientists, The Frozen Ship also reflects upon morbid global cultural fascination with expeditions that went horribly wrong, and the powerfully romanticized appeal of the frozen polar landscapes and the drive to plant flags in ice. A skillfully researched and smoothly presented chronicle of man versus nature throughout the centuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for ALL female athletes
My daughter is a 10 year old girl hockey player and both she and I read the book, she actually did a powerpoint presentation for school on the book. This book is more than just a hockey book but an insiration to all girls about the obstacles Angela overcame in her life. After reading the book myself I am glad to know that my daughter looks up to Angela and wants to be like her, there is NO better role model for a young girl to look up to than Angela. This book is a must for all young girls, no matter what sport or activity they are involved in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring.
This book talks about some of the early formings of girls/womens hockey in the USA. This is a very good book to read if you are familiar with hockey. Even if you are not involved with hockey you will like this book, because it talks about overcoming the odds and moving up in the ranks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Angela Ruggiero rocks my (hockey) socks
This book is less about hockey and more about getting a peek inside the life of one of the greatest athletes of all time.It details the dedication that excellence requires, combined with personal stories from Angela's life. This book should be a part of every female hockey player's library. As a bonus, Ruggiero is seriously hot. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I picked up this book at the local library, and now I plan to buy it. Claire really knows her topic! My only quibble with the book (2nd edition) is that in a few places she didn't delete information from the 1st edition, but merely superimposed a black box saying "trail closed" or "this restaurant is now closed". This is somewhat bizarre, and might be an editing/production error. In any case, this is a valuable guide that I want on my bookshelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Guidebook
I own a lot of summer and winter trail guides, and this is one of the best. It's quality and quantity, with dozens of trails all over the state, and also tours, races and even a few tips on cool places to eat and stay.It has maps showing the trailhead locations, but I wish it had topos too.Oh well, you can't have everything--and topos are the only thing missinghere. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Problems Amazon Sales Department
You sold me this book twice and tried to sell it to me a third time. I ordered, received, and paid for it in November. I got it again in January when I had ordered another book, but I was able to return it to you. In February you shipped it to me again and, thinking it was the Tax Manual I had previously ordered I gave it to someone else without opening it only to find that I had again gotten the book I (A) bought, and (B) returned. PLEASE DON'T TRY TO SELL IT TO ME YET AGAIN.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect mix of skiing, mountaineering and combat
Climb To Conquer: The Untold Story of World War II's 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops is an engaging story of one the US Army's most specialized organizations of WWII.Outdoor and skiing enthusiast Peter Shelton has done the men of the 10th Mountain Division justice with Climb To Conquer.Unlike the more recent, Boys of Winter by Charles J. Sanders, Shelton's book is a solid piece of historical literature.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another Good History of the 10th...
First off, let's dismiss the "Untold Story" bit which is part of the book's title. The fact is that the 10th Mountain has received its share of books and "Climb to Conquer" in that respect, is no different.Read more

Editorial Review

Alaska is more than just the largest state in the Union; it's also a state of mind, as Ann Mariah Cook found out. Together with her husband, 3-year-old daughter, and 32 purebred Siberian huskies, she moved there from New Hampshire in order to train for the legendary Yukon Quest, the most rigorous sled-dog race in the world. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
Running North is an excellent book for anyone interested in Alaska or mushing.Ann Mariah Cook captures the feel for Alaska and dog sledding perfectly.Even if you have no true interest in the subject you will find your self swept into the wonderful world of dog sledding.Cook clearly brings to life the people they met, friends they made, and the hazards that tried to stop them from running the Yukon Quest. One of the most grueling races in the world.I found I learned a great deal from this book without it ever becoming boring or slowing down. And most importantly she tells about the dogs, the wonderful creatures who work so willingly for us.Sometimes heartbreaking sometime funny, this book is an interesting, exciting read for anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A family who followed their dream one special winter
Subtitled, "A Yukon Adventure," Ann Mariah Cook's fascinating 1998 memoir chronicles the time in 1992 that she, her husband George and three-year old daughter moved to Alaska to participate in the Yukon Quest, the toughest sled dog race in the world. It was George who ran the race;Ann was the one who drove the truck, carried the gear, took care of their daughter and gave him moral support through the long months of training, and eventually through the grueling event.5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
This book was one of the greatest ones I have ever read. I race sled dogs, and I found it so interesting...I could and have felt everything they go through. Also my grandmother who bought the book for me said she started reading it one night and read it the whole thing that night, and she has never raced and knows nothing about it, and she LOVED it. So it is a good book for anyone to read!! ... Read more
